Rob Zombie makes essentially "dessert" horror films. They're unnecessary and not particularly healthy or meaningful, but can definitely be beautiful and are often delicious. Same for his music, honestly.
'House of 1000 corpses' is like being cornered at a party by a guy who cant stop yelling just how much he loves Texas Chainsaw Massacre
You can tell he was inspired by that movie
Yes. And his music is like a similar guy at the same party yelling at you about how much he loves Ministry.
It is perhaps time to go find a different party.
As an avid lover of house of 1000 corpses I can confirm that’s exactly what we as fans are like too
Additional fun fact: Rob Zombie was a production assistant for Pee-wee's Playhouse
That doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Pee Wee Herman never wanted to make content for children. He wanted to make content for people who's minds have been melted by an excessive amount of drugs and disguised it as a hyperactive kids show during Reagan's regime.
over the years i'm starting to wonder if House of 1000 Corpses was just accidentally good.
Yo, cool To see you here Rad Rev
Im everywhere.
Actually my Straw Dog character was inspired by the May's skeleton character.
@@RadicalReviewer neat trivia. I'll add it to the breadtube wiki lol
I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago and.....I can see why it's a cult classic but oh my god was that ever...a trip. It's got a lot going for it and I'm sure I'll be able to say some day that I like the film, but for now I'm still salty about the averted Final Girl trope. I wanted her to survive, damn it.
I don't suspect it's accidental, so much as a mix of his inexperience and budgetary limitations that led the film to avoid the problems his later films suffer from. It feels much more like a movie that was made to enjoy making a movie than a movie that was made to be a serious art piece, and that's to the film's benefit. House of 1000 Corpses has a roughness to it that contributes to the grungy and dated slasher film aesthetic, but also serves to give it enough of an amateurish quality to seem charming. As Zombie's films got studio budgets and the director himself felt confident, the films lost that charm and descended into Zombie telling stories that often feel similar and hit the same themes multiple times.
Actually, “dwarf” is accepted because dwarfism, often achondroplasia, is the medical term. The word that is offensive is “midget.”
Depends who you ask. Herve Villechaise didn't mind 'midget', Billy Barty would insist on 'little person'. When in doubt, just don't.
@@CSGraves when in doubt just... don't refer to people with dwarfism at all, using any words? If there's no words that you can use to refer to people with dwarfism, how are you supposed to talk about the condition? Would you prefer that, when you do bring it up, all words to refer to "people with dwarfism" be instead replaced with that three-word phrase? Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point, but I'm legitimately curious what you're trying to suggest here.
@@coseofrerichs8547 I mean if you're about to use a label on someone, but you're not sure whether they're personally OK with it, consider _not_ using that label. It certainly varies from person to person, but I'd like to err on the side of caution.
@@coseofrerichs8547 this is old, but when you dont know use the term Little Person. Its generally accepted.
@@cinnabun4792 yeah, most of the relevant folk I know use either dwarf or people with dwarfism. But it's often quite a personal thing. I guess it's the difference between identity first and person first language which depends a lot on the disability and the disabled persons relation to it. For sample I'm autistic and a wheelchair user, and strongly dislike being called a person with autism as that sounds like it's an addition to me as opposed to an inherent part of me. The same reason I wouldn't call myself "a person with gayness" or "someone affected by whiteness" to describe being a gay white person (even though both those things are just inherent facts about me that affect most aspects of my life in some way.)
That got rambly, but I'm trying to say that identity first language is used by a lot of disabled people including a lot of dwarfs. But you will always meet people who aren't a fan of that, so you just gotta respect it - adjust your language and move on
I mean if an actual witch can't figure this out, then we are fckd.
Your skeleton friend's Junji Ito tshirt is stunning.
From what I can gather, it seems less like he's a slave to what he thinks his fans want as much as what he can get funding to produce. He wants to make a hockey movie. He wants to make a movie about the final days of Groucho Marx. But those movies always end up in development hell, while backers seem to jump to give him a budget for schlock horror. And inevitably the resources for those films go toward a horror film he didn't originally want to direct (see: why Myers has a beard in Halloween II). I don't think the guy has wanted to make any of the films on his resume since LoS, or at least they weren't first choice.
I really think he wants to be recognized as a legitimate filmmaker, not just as a horror guy. The problem seems to be just as much capitalism as it is his own tastes and sensibilities in shock and awe.
You nailed it. Which is strange considering that he definitely makes the kind of music he wants, regardless of what genre expectations his fans have. Smaller budgets involved with music making, presumably.
It's neat coming back here and seeing his next film is a Munsters movie, something he's very obviously a fan of and not stereotypically "him."
@@dyldragon1 Kinda unfortunate that it ended up sucking though
I feel like Rob Zombie saw Fun House and was like "my aesthetic. It here."
J.D. Thornton I think that honor would go to “Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.”
People booed at House of 1000 Corpses in my home theater. I was instantly in love with that film. I make no apologies.
ppl walked out of the first showing of it I went to & booed too!!!!
I didnt like it but loved devils rejects and still re-bought both to watch before 3 from hell. I have most of his films now. Probably gonna watch 1000 corpses tonight. I'm a little older now so I think I'll enjoy it so much more bc I love weird horror stuff so much more now.
I was too baby to see it in theaters, but it was love at first sight for me. It has very similar energies to Texas Chainsaw Massacre II, in my opinion. Instead of letting him remake the Halloween franchise I think they should've let him have a go at TCM, when he was still relatively happy with making horror movies that is.
Does Robert Zombie is horror movies?
not gonna lie reading your comment gave me a headache lol
Yes
Not with an attitude like that!!
But does Robert Cummings is porno flicks?
I think Rob Zombie makes modern day explotation films 🤷♂️
Vaild
YES!
Holy shit. I think you cracked it just like that.
He and Eli Roth.
TheTroutyness Eli Roth is hotter, so... points for that. And Roth is usually in his films in some capacity... 🤷🏼♀️
I really loved this one so much! There were parts that made me laugh out loud, and I was really connected to you as you tried to unravel this mystery of Zombie. Also, you look super gorgeous all lounged on the couch, like a beautiful film witch. She brews the films!! 10/10 on this one !!!!
Are you lesbian
Whoosh
May is always a pretty witchy. 🧡🧡
She brews the films!!
1) You found the best picture of Danny Trejo!
2) I read in an interview with Rob Zombie that the speech Otis gives to the cheerleaders is an actual speech that Rob's high school gym coach gave to him.
3) I saw 3 From Hell and thought it was okay, but it contradicts a lot of the things you talked about that made Devil's Rejects better.
Its whole existence feels like a contradiction to Rejects
I honestly wish he had let the Firefly Saga end with The Devil's Rejects.
"Goddamn motherfucker got blood all over my best clown suit" - My favorite line from all his films
I'll be honest: I don't really watch his movies, but I like his music. Hell, for a long time Dragula was a staple of our Halloween parties, back when we actually had Halloween parties, and the song "Ratfinks, Suicide Tanks, Cannibal Girls" from his time in White Zombie is fucking kickass to the point where it would be an amazing fight track in games like DUSK and Painkiller.
Though I guess in a way, Rob Zombie's films are kind of like visceral car crashes, and there are many people who can see them coming and are somewhat hooked on watching them happen. They're kind of shocking and not necessarily good things to witness, but I guess that they are oddly compelling.
...come to think of it, that analogy would probably make for an interesting Rob Zombie-esque film: a group of disenfranchised individuals are compelled by fate to bear witness to horrible events while being mysteriously unharmed every time. Gradually, they'd become desensitized to the mayhem and disaster they are forced to bear witness to, and even become compelled to actively seek out the imminent disasters that they have no hope of stopping, just to witness them firsthand. This would lead up to a scene midway through the movie where the gang is sitting around on sun-loungers, sipping margaritas, waiting around for what we soon discover to be a horrific highway pile-up.
It could be a commentary on the apparent powerlessness of the everyman in the face of the slow and visceral car crash that is mankind's seemingly inevitable decline, and how it can be grimly comforting to just watch the world slowly burn down around you. And equally, it could serve as a commentary on the 24 hour news cycle that constantly runs stories about all the terrible things that keep happening, partly because the media keeps pushing these stories and inspiring copycats and whatnot. As for the name of this theoretical movie that really should be made so that Nyx can do a video called "Witness To Mayhem is Pretty Grim, Huh Guys?" breaking down all of its themes? ...well, Witness to Mayhem. 'cause that's what each of the protagonists are in this story.
you should make this
"Every time one door closes a microwave opens" made me laugh so much and i cant tell you why.
This was such a good video aaaaaa its super commendable of May to speak her mind about the kind of movies no one can figure out. Tbh more people should do just That because i keep finding movies im mysteriously drawn to. id like to discuss those movies apart from their production (usually bad bad bad) and talk about them more as having a presence. Some sort of key Thing you cant find anywhere else that might activate your serotonin or whatever.
I generally kinda like the films of Bobert Zombo
I'm literally two lines in and I already almost spat my coffee out laughing
'A man! A beard!'
Ron Zimbabwe strikes me as a surprisingly successful fanfic writer.
Just saw Glenn Danzig's new horror film. Rob Zombie is now officially an amazing filmmaker.
Better to be interesting and mediocre than to be flawless yet boring.
KnoFear interesting and mediocre are complete opposites tho
Exactly 💀 she tried with that comment but she failed.
Larinda Nomikos Okay Karen.
This phrase is just one big oxymoron.
The berserk reference made me so happy 💚💜
this video is aesthetically Where It's At
His music is Banging tho
i just wish hed give the zombies their things back
im so angry at past me for this
This comment brought me joy in a time when I have otherwise forsaken the concept of humour.
I think it's great that he's giving all these cult horror mainstays like Bill Moseley, Michael Berryman, Ken Foree, and the late Sid Haig work. I don't tend to like the end results all that much, but this is still a Good Thing.
The Lords of Salem always gave me a real strong Ken Russell vibe; I like it the best because it seems genuinely intrinsically weird.
Oh! And and and I really hope he gets to do the Charlie Chaplin biopic he wants to do. He really does seem to have a deep and involved love of the Marx brothers.
I've never seen a Rob Zombie movie but watching this video has forced me to think deeply about my engagement with horror and what I like in genre media, so thanks for that, May! Unironically.
i was literally JUST saying a lot of this.
what worked for him in his music - stringing together a bunch of cool creepy words - does not work when trying to make a linear story.
they're not so much style over substance (they kind of are) they need more cohesive & better stories.
(except El Superbeasto. its a fucking huge mess ¬hing can save it. KILL IT WITH FIRE)
I love lords of salem, its GORGEOUS but i wish there had been more/better story.
Lords of Salem has the same problem House of 1000 Corpses does: not just that the bad guys win, but that there's not even really a point where it looks like the "good guys" might. Bruce Davison goes to the witches' house, they ask him a bunch of weird questions and club him to death, and that's it. It's entertaining, but what was the point? I feel like Devil's Rejects has the strongest through-line of any of his films, which is why it's widely regarded as his best.
There is more story to Lords of Salem. He adapted the original screenplay into a book and there's so much more story.
I haven't read it yet but I have had it explained to me by an obsessed RZ fan. Not sure I understood it but there is more.

oh dang, dead meat supports you on patreon? i like that channel quite a lot
I missed you. This is "Movies with Mikey" level stuff, if not, better. This is what I subscribed for 2 years ago. I'M SO PUMPED FOR MORE. Thank you, May-Ann.
15:43 , as someone who grew up in a really dangerous area ,,,, cops do be like that
Nyx Fears is my favorite anime, just check out that fucking intro like holy shit
amazing video!! it's really good seeing you make the content you want to make
the only thing i give Zombie is that somehow in modern day hollywood, he continues to be able to make exactly what his vision is or close to it and keeps getting studio moola and backing. and executives keep okaying his flicks. lol
I just get so happy when you post 💕💕
Videos where you highlight horror artists like this are really some of my faves, like the chris cunningham one.
I think Rob Zombie makes films that appeal to the nu-metal sensibilities of the 90s that propelled him to fame. Vaguely political but ultimately shallow, inauthentic violent power fantasies. You can't find a meaning because it's essentially just a collection of angry tropes meant to titillate young "edgy" kids
You fucking said it, Kelly
As a life long horror fan, I've never found anything of merit in House of a 1000 corpses except the last 15 minutes. His later films at least had some technical polish in terms of style and framing; Zombie does have a strong visual eye for horror. Too bad every scene of every movie he makes is ripped off from other, better films. And the dialogue.... Lord I cannot sanction such garbage writing, not even in the context of a filmmaker attempting satire (IF that is what Zombie is attempting.... Just as likely he doesn't understand the meaning of the word).
But whatever, enough people watch the crap and his wife has a very photogenic ass, so there's that lol.
Just found your channel! Really love your vibe. 💜
Really great video - I'm not sure how to feel about his movies either but I still watch them.
Yes, May! I love a deep dive! Especially on a group of films I've seen and not enjoyed but still watch
"free yourself beast" was such a sweet little moment ahahaha
The Haunted World of El Superbeasto looks like the kind of cartoon that would play on the GTA 5 TVs.
This was a such a great video!!
I've been waiting so long for this video to exist.
my grandma watches every rob zombie film from 12 am on xmas even to 11:59 pm on xmas night
may you seem so much happier with yourself and more confident in your creative choices!! GREAT JOB ON THIS VIDEO!
I have recently found your channel and I love it. Keep up the great work. I’m a Rob Zombie fan (music came first, then movies) and yes he’s I weird form of genius.
This is great, I got so pumped when the intro started :D
Your editing game is ON POINT,
Yay! I think this is the first vid since I became a patreon supporter. 😊 Great video, May. Also, may I just say-KILLER gams. Seriously. 😘
His second Halloween was a misunderstood gem and I will die on this hill
Same. Theatrical ending > director's cut ending though
Just know it will only be your corpse on that hill
I unapologetically enjoy his Halloween remakes
It’s cool dude seeing as this hill isn’t very tall or steep so you won’t get too winded if you need come down to break for potty or just to get some tasty beverage 👍
Its like rocky road ice cream with no almonds and no marshmallows and you get two free extra scoops. But then you try to look past that and you get a spoon of it up to nose level and realize they served you a bowl with three scoops of frozen poo poo. I'm never coming to get ice cream here ever again.
Lords of Salem is my personal fav movie of his. It's just so fucking insane
Your killing it with the witch hat, Nyx.
You have a really great channel.
The classic question of "Do I not like this because it's not for me or because it not good?"
Also, I need to know, is the cat named Beast or did you call it beast?
Because either way, I'm naming my next cat Beast
your videos i will forever love
Just like Wolfenstein, there can always be a “what if”
I've always subscribed to the definition of art as "something made to make the viewer feel something" I think the something Mr Zamboni wants you to feel is confusion mixed with disgust with a hint of pure voyeristic delight
I feel I keep watching his films because I can see the potential he has, but w/e it is that makes him original- is the thing that also holds him back with films....and he is addicted to whatever the hell craziness that is so it'll never stop. But I still keep watching.
The Devil's rejects mistake is that it's actually a good movie. It's like walking into a haunted house and all the ghosts have really interesting back stories and scare you with poignant social commentary. Sure, the story might be good, but having the story detracts from it being what people want to see - a spooky haunted house.
“House of 1000 Corpses” does feel like a haunted house attraction, and oddly enough, that’s what it originally was (for Universal Studios Hollywood 2000.)
May is one of the few UA-camrs whose video essays I can just watch nonstop
late af to the nyx train but that pic of you with the berserk sword at 7:35 is what did it for me
I think you really nailed it when you said "He knows what he's doing"
may your new op is so god damn sick and i know youve had it for A Little Bit but i havent said so yet i fuckin love it
This was such a cool and unique way to talk about this, and I think it only makes sense coming from someone like you who unabashedly loves horror. I appreciate your insight in bringing nuance to a body of work I particularly never cared about.
I didn't grow up on horror movies. I'm here because I'm gay.
My best friend once tried to murder me while we were watching The Devils Rejects.
She was blackout drunk and randomly pulled a knife out of her purse and started pointing it at me. I walked over to where she was sitting and said something like "Riiigghhhtttt"
She ran it across my arm and took a swing at my throat. I pulled my head back but she did nick me.
I sat back down, in shock, looking at the blood on my arm and wiping it off my neck. Then I got mad.
My bestie is a lil 120 pound blonde girl, I grabbed her hand and got the knife away from her, then grabbed her by the back of the jeans and around the shoulders and dragged her to the front door, deposited her on the steps, closed and locked it, then went back, got her purse and threw it out a window onto the lawn. All without hurting her.
After banging on the door for awhile she drove off and apparently woke up in her car hours later. She called me, all confused, thinking she was staying at my place and I explained what had happened.
She didn't remember anything, but blamed the movie.
Next month we'll have been friends for 16 years. We still talk every single day.
Love it, May!
I really like the thumb nail art for this video. Mad cute 👌👌
Also, Thank you Nyx for including that BTS clip showing the car on the trailer. I'd always wondered how they got those shots, and I suppose part of me figured it was by driving alongside with the camera in a second car.
A horror... man
*a new classic vid*
This is on point!
the phrase "a guy who never gets off his bullshit" reminded me vividly of a story from Tony Iommi's(guitarist of Black Sabbath, inventor of heavy metal) biography where he talks about watching Rob Zombie walk out to a hotel pool and sit in the reclining chair in like. full leather Rob Zombie regalia and just being like 'gotta admire a dude that commits'
speaking of movies about nothing, has anyone seen rubber?
house of 1000 corpses was my first horror movie, so rob zombie and his movies have a very special place in my heart. some of his movies are ofc better than others, but no matter what i still love them in an obscure way that feels kinda dirty lol. i really admire your opinion and questions though, super interesting video. ily!!
God i love ur intro
Great video! Also, it's great to see that y'all found Cinderella.
We didn't...this was shot before she ran away :(
This was super fascinating.
Love this! Have you ever considered breaking down any other directors? It’d be cool to hear your take on Eli Roth, Romero, Craven, et al.
Thank you so much for making this video! I honestly have no idea how many times I've watched the Devil's Rejects and been like "...WHAT THE FUCK DOES THIS MEAN?!" It seems like he actively works against his movies meaning anything, just trying to put out 'pure' grindhouse movies where evil always wins.
"To surmise: *Tim Allen grunt* "
--Nyx Fears
31 is my favorite one of mines with devil’s rejects following closely behind
My first interaction with House of 1000 Corpses was a fuzzy broadcast on a channel we probably weren't supposed to have and an extra glitchy "Run Rabbit Run" scene
Awesome video. I have been watching you forever and you seem so much happier now. I love it 😍
And I had no clue about the haunted world of El superbeasto.... Wtf lmao 😂😂
I recently finally watched Lord's of Salem and I didn't like it but also loved it. I guess I'm like that with most of his movies. But House of 1000s corpse is a hole other level of WTF and I love it 👻
just dropping by to say that you look very lovely! like, every time you upload you look more beautiful and more confident and your smile could light up any room (also i hope this doesn't come across as creepy i know you get a lot of not great comments and just wanted to add something positive)
No bullshit I met him once at a Starbucks in Studio City and he talked to me for half an hour about Cannibal Holocaust. Sincerely loves horror and horror fans.
jokes on you, i have heard of el superbeasto because i used to spend way too much time on animation youtube
Rob Zombie could film himself pooping and I'd declare it Movie of the Century.
There's just something about his movies that I can't put words to. It rubs some part of my brain just right.
Same.🤘
YES, QUEEN. you're gorgeous btw.
Yuck
I think Rob Zombie is one of the most underrated performers/entertainers out there. He's able to effectively convey a lot of genre's in his films from dramatic, suspense, comedy, obviously horror and he really understands theatrics which shows through if you've ever been to one of his concerts. Lets not forget Zombie is a huge rock star and he puts on a hell of a show. I just don't think he gets the credit he should. Like him or not he's a greatly talented quality entertainer through and through.
I’m pretty much on the same page. I don’t know if I ‘like’ all of Rob’s stuff, but I definitely respect it. His work ethic, his aesthetic vision, his sheer balls. Even the Halloween reboots had moments of brilliance, like the psychological vignettes (or whatever those were) in the second one, and titanic power of his Meyers. His casting is consistently great, as you noted, and the images he puts on screen are unique and unforgettable.
Can I just say the opening theme to your videos slap?
Thank you for putting into words what so many of us had trouble piecing together!
I'm old enough to have actually hung out with this guy in Hollywood in the late 80s and early 90s. He used to go to all the clubs that offered free buffets because like me, he couldn't afford food and the price of getting into these bars. It tripped me out when his band became successful, and then I didn't see him for many more years. He dates his movies in the '70s just like Quentin Tarantino stylizes his, for the same reason. These are the things he grew up on. They're both men and their mid late 50s who cut their teeth on these early 70s grindhouse and exploitation films, and remember them with a sort of affection and love. At least that's the way I've always seen it, but I'm old as s*** so what do I know?
Never seen any Rob Zombie films, but I've watched this video so many times :3
Wow May, you're the only other person (other than myself) that noticed the Kubrickian vibe with Lords of Salem. I definitely agree with most of your opinions about his films. In regards to why his movies are set mostly in the 70's truly does seem to be about nostalgia, his love of the music from that era, etc; I think it also has something to do with his storytelling style. Meaning that during that time period, there were no cell phones, PCs, or other things we take for granted. It becomes scarier because of the lack of technology, the isolation, because there's no way The Firefly Family could get away with all their BS if people had smartphones.
Keep on doing what you're doing May!
It was a lovely video
this bit's off-topic but I just noticed we both have a tattoo in the same place on our left calves. mine's a chicken foot but like, I never see anyone with that specific placement so that's rad. anyway all your content rocks and your wife are the sweetest couple I've seen on UA-cam, you can just tell how much fun y'all have while filming.
