It's funny that most people assume film nerds want to recommend them "slow, boring, indie european dramas about people in rooms talking" when nearly every film nerd I follow is like "here's a list of movies that will make you go insane, have fun"
you must know some pretty fuckin boring people
to be fair, about a third of these movies definitely are at least partially european dramas about people in rooms talking
they’re just also brain-melting nightmare hellscapes
Lovelyroseytea Yeah, in my experience most film geeks who aren't, like, boring Tarantino worshippers or compulsively cataloguing different Apocalypse Now cuts or whatever are pretty heavily into stuff that makes your mind explode into little pieces.
Love that

Do you ever take requests from your fandom as far as films to review?
Satoshi Kon's entire filmography is phenomenal. It's a shame his final film still hasn't been completed. RIP good sir.
=( I miss Satoshi! Paranoia agent is my favorite Anime show, Paprika/Perfect Blue are my favorite anime movies.
magnetic rose is a small little film satoshi kon wrote (directed by koji morimoto) that I recommend if you’ve seen his films
(edit: i dont want the term “small” or “little” to make anyone question the quality of the film, i only mean small in terms of length in comparison to his feature length films)
May no exaggeration this is EXACTLY what I needed right now thank you
I hope she responds to this
respond
Candyman has a special place in my heart, and by heart I mean the organ that stores trauma because I watched it when I was wayyyy too young
Same tho my brain blocked almost all of it, same thing with childs play 2
"Possession" (1981) is an absolute classic and definite must-see. Isabelle Adjani is simply amazing. In an interview, she admitted that her role in the film messed her up in the head...
i was looking forward to movies to help deteriorate my mental state faster
Give me a week
@@nyxfears hells yeah
"Nicolas Cage appears many times on this list"
As he should be
The Handmaiden is required viewing for lesbians/bi girls, along with Imagine Me and You. Holy shit does the handmaiden improve upon its source material The Fingersmith. I do like the final line of the book though, that was pretty solid.
and now we got portrait of a lady on fire too! all we do is win
@@oof-rr5nf Oo I have heard of that one. I'll have to perform my due lesbian dilligence and check it out
@@PforPanthera it really goes off. it depicts themes like female gaze, nature of artist/muse relationships, comradery between women as a community, how suppressed women have a fire within them that burns with quiet yet loud agony, all the while being a very visually pleasing experience. gays won
It's a must see for everyone, period.
The handmaiden is the best thing I've ever seen. It's the one movie I demand all my friends watch with me without any context whatsoever so I can vicariously experience watching it for the first time.
I watched The Devils the same day I passed the GED and saw The Lighthouse on the big screen. And it was also Halloween.
Pretty much the best day of my life.
Paprika is legitimately my favorite movie and I am so happy to see someone else talk about it! I love everything by that director as well- especially Tokyo Godfathers when I feel like a good cry. If I may tentatively add Naked Lunch to this list- it vibes with a lot of the weirdness on this list. There’s a typewriter shaped like a beetle that orgasms when you type on it. Fun!
that top is SO CUTE
Candyman's score was composed by contemporary classical composer Philip Glass! It's great.
Yes! Another Glass scored film worth looking at IMHO; Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters.
Dude when Perfecr Blue appeared I DIED. I thought nobody else cared about Satoshi Kon but me!
Edit: Damn, Paprika too!?
You should check out Super Eyepatch Wolf's videos on Kon's work.

@@sawdustanddiamonds99 ok! i fixed it
Missed Pan’s Labyrinth right after Bone Tomahawk! That being said, I really appreciate this list-thank you :)
Content warning: friendship. My favorite channel for a reason
Finally, another stan of the suspiria remake
Still haven't seen it, I've seen the Olga scene and it make me feel very queasy
I would describe Mandy as both an anime and like someone’s modern D&D LARPing session that got turned into a movie
I loved the zombies killing priest in the phantom thread 31:22
I feel like there's a lot more good movies on this list than you implied in the intro. Also, I once tried to watch Inland Empire when it was about to expire off Netflix, and it was literally midnight, and that's a lot like watching on drugs after a full day of activity.
To me, Inland Empire is like the closest anyone has gotten to depicting bad dreams in film... the constant disorientation hits most of my nightmares right on the head.
I watched it at 1 AM. My first time. I had to stop half way, walk around my home for fifteen minutes, then continue watching.
i just really like your intro music
Thanks, I made it myself 💕
Me too. Sooo much.
@@nyxfears Seriously?? Its really fucking good. Wow. I just found your channel and I AM SO GLAD I DID. Flawless.
@Nyx Fears
Holy God, that's epic! I was just going through the comments to see if I could find the title of it, you're super talented May!
jesus CHRIST, that Inland Empire clip
I really can't do messed up faces like that
It caught me off guard lol scarred for life
The queen has blessed us!
I have been waiting for someone to clip Nic Cage in his undies screaming in the brown bathroom for so long. Thank you for your service.
Great list.
I have been watching Doom Patrol because a story about massively dysfunctional people learning to come together is the hope I need right now.
Mandy is honestly a homestuck fans wet dream
Girl, I dig your spooky, witchy opening. I love listening to you while I drive, so this is the first time I’ve actually seen it. The song in it is so vibe-y!
This series of vids got me through the pandemic. Something so cozy and fun about hearing you casually talking about good and/or horrifying movies in soft light.
I don't think it's a coincidence that most of my favorite movies are on this list.
Can't wait to spend the next god knows how long reliving all my trauma with these gorgeous films
5 days at home and I'm fairly certain I did not purchase enough cannabis.
Same. 😢
This list is absolutely perfect and dreamy, and no, I totes didn't swoon over seeing Ginger Snaps and Videodrome get a shout out since it doesn't get much love these days.
“Suspiria remake is better than the first one” is not a controversial opinion.
It is if you're a boomer
you kidding? it is a very unpopular opinion
personally both films are my favourite of all time and they're both perfect for completely different reasons. if you happen to like the remake better, more power to you!
Nobody:
May: What if I rick rolled everyone,
BUT
It was V A P O R W A V E
Still catching up on your episodes. You have brought me tons of laughter since I found your channel. Thank you so much for this excellent list. Many, many favorites! I absolutely loved seeing John Waters AND Tyler Perry on the same list. You have excellent taste! 🤗💜 (And even The Handmaiden! Oh my!)
I just found your channel, so I've been working my way through your back catalogue and have internally retitled this one "50 movies to distract you from impending WWIII". Thanks for the tips.
Inland Empire is my favorite David Lynch movie. Maybe one of my favorite movies ever. I like weird, oblique incomprehensible nightmare nonsense though, so I may not be representative of the public.
Jason Stone I know, right? It's literally like three hours of a fever-induced nightmare caught on video. It's fantastic.
This is me, coming in a year late and realizing that the skill Inland Empire in Disco Elysium is named after this movie.
I come back to this video whenever I have a bad day. It’s one of my favorites. Thanks for making this
That was a lot of movies id either never heard of or just didnt have on my list. Thanks as always, really love your input on all of these! You're a v wonderful human being!!!
May istg you better give a written list of these movies somewhere cuz my dumb ass can't absorb all these names adequately but I wanna watch EVERYTHINGGGG
You can write the names down on a piece of paper as you watch the video
@@cringeproof100 you overestimate my attention span 😂
I feel like as trans girls who likes horror a lot, me and may have somewhat of a similar brain. "This movie has everything in it, this movie even has an orgy. Absolutely perfect." 11/10 sounds fantastic.
Ginger Snaps is my favorite werewolf film of all time and when you mentioned it, I squealed in delight. Thank you for mentioning it, Queen!
I'd love to enjoy the movies, but unfortunate I'm in the category of essential(mail), but at least it's my weekend so I'll look at some of them today
Thanks for your work, friend.
Stay safe.
Kinda in the same boat (grocery Worker) I just watched Rikki Oh and yep it is insane but I loved it.
- One day, I was in a Wal Mart looking for Bone Tomahawk, and I asked an employee where it was on the shelves. He warned me it gets gruesome. I said, "I know what I'm about, son." That said, I was rather disappointed with it.
- Nyyyyyxxxx you used a clip from the Candyman sequel AND ruined the scariest moment from Mulholland Drive.
- Speaking of Ken Russell, I recommend Whore, if you can find it. It's so bad... but also really good. But bad. But good.
Phantom of the Paradise and Society are probably among my top 10 fav movies so I'm very happy to see them ever getting representation.
ur taste in movies is breathtaking
“Go on wear that makeup!” how did you know I’m being experimental today?
I'm sad there aren't more Park Chanwook's movies, specially I'm A Cyborg But That's Okay in which I get to apreciate Rain yodelling for five minutes straight while the main character is getting transported through the air by a giant ladybug
Oh my god someone else apart from me watched I'm A Cyborg But That's Okay holy shit!!! I also didn't know that he's the director of it?? wOah
This is the first video ive watched on your channel, and wow. I love the style the editing and most importantly you and your taste in movies. Wonderful.
SO glad Satoshi Kon movies made the list. Paprika is my favorite and that one for sure has GREAT rewatch potential, since I know I had to watch it like 5 times before I understood what was going on, but I loved it after the first
Phantom of the Paradise continues to be a bizarre favorite of mine. I Still can't put my finger on why I keep coming back to it.
That "im ready for my close-up " comment makes Angelica from Rugrats so much better
I can't believe Raw didn't make this list, it seems to fit in well with your taste in films. I would also like to mention a few of my favorites, Pi, Requiem for a Dream, Primer, Ichi the Killer, Audition, The Congress. Too many to list, but these are timeless.
This was suddenly in my recommendations and Don not regret sitting though through, real choice movies in this, Thanks. hopefully this is enough to ride out the quarantine
Didn't expect to see The Devils on a list like this haha
I wasn't ready to see this shot again 22:42
The laser disc (non-CGI) version of THX1138 is on the internet archive just in case anyone is interested
HELL YEAH THE LAWNMOWER SCENE Dead Alive RULES I have stanned it ever since I saw it as a teen. I'm so pleased you mentioned it!
I'm so glad you included Return of the Living Dead, the zombie movie that is ostensibly a comedy, yet somehow even bleaker than Day of the Dead.
(Plus Linnea Quigley as Trash is an icon, we fully stan)
I commented something once before when this video first came out but I just wanna say thank u so much for talking about Mandy. I really feel like it doesn't quite get the amount of love it deserves.
This video got me to watch Videodrome, Mulholland Drive, and Brazil. Now those are probably some of my favorite films. Thanks, May.
Thanks, this video legitimately has improved my mood.
She's absolutely adorable. How come this channel doesn't have more subs?!?
How aren't people talking more about the fact that the Evangelion guy made a Godzilla movie that's 90% bureaucrats sitting in offices and is still amazing?
You: **calls it apocalypse**
Me: Ah yes. My anxiety has washed away by you calling it an apocalypse. I feel at peace and won’t remember this pandemic.
This is the first video of yours I came across. I love your content and your vibe. I just subscribed.
I was with you, so with you. Like 90% of these movies I already own and need to rewatch.
But then you told me to put on pants. I REFUSE!
i just realized you have a bridge piercing (???) which looks GREAT, and also i cant wait to watch a bunch of these movies now
Fun fact: Phantom of the Paradise is Edgar Wright's favorite movie (one of them, anyway).
Possession is one of my favorite movies ever.
O.M.G... I watched that Communion movie as a kid and I've wondered what it was called ever since. I MUST watch it again.
Picking "Possession" for a thumbnail, what are you? :O
That movie fucked me up hard, absolute must-watch.
Wow, our tastes are scarily similar. Almost all I've seen multiple times (especially Suspiria, Roar, Brazil, Perfect Blue, etc) and are in my top own personal top 50. The only ones that I love that are not in this list are The Thing, World of Tomorrow, and Princess Mononoke. Honestly with everything stressful going, now is the time for a Ghibli marathon. Most of them are very healing for the soul (except for GotF that one's a liiiiitle heavy right now)
dude, i saw beyond the black rainbow for the first time with my dad last week (both of us were NOT on LSD so i got to imagine if that whole movie was what it’s like to be on any hallucinogenic drugs ever) & it’s by far one of the best movies i’ve ever watched but it’s also the weirdest movie i’ve ever seen. thanks, dad.
Phantom of the paradise is literally the best thing ever
I feel like you just reviewed all the highlights from my DVD and Blu-ray collection. I don't think I've ever felt so validated. Which is weird, but I'm here for it x
Ultimately what I learned from this video is that the world needs another punk goes pop album
Me: *scrolls by video*
me: *goes back and notices it’s made by NyxFears* ohh ima watch that rn actually 🥺🥺 ily
It's nice to see Alucarda getting some recognition, a national masterpiece of horror! Greetings fro Mexico btw
Just found your channel and OMF I love it. You deserve so many more subscribers!!
22:08 may have just saved my life hahaha sad but true! Now I need to see Future War because that was fantastic.
EDIT: I posted this as soon as I saw that part, and am happily returning to fangirl about the fact that you replayed it, more than once!
ALSO: I wish I had words to describe what you do for my mental health, in so many crazy ways. It's been a journey since I found your channel, I'm pretty sure you changed my life. Keep being you, you're incredible! I just hope you know you are actively saving lives.
Watching this video more than 3 years later it's so funny how there's a "I can't go out, it's quarantine!" joke every 2 minutes. :D
I think you accidentally labeled Dead Alive as “The Phantom Thread”, but I don’t care cause I was actually hoping you’d put Dead Alive in this list. I watched it when I was really young, was absolutely disgusted and intrigued by it, and spent the rest of my life until really recently not knowing what the name was.
This is a really great video and a really great list May. Thanks for giving us some good times during this bad time.
Omfg the render! It did that to me during the edit. I need a computer that works
@@nyxfears I thought you did that on purpose as a joke.
I LOVE weird-ass movies like these and I am DISAPPOINTED in myself that I've only seen a bare handful of them
I guess I gotta watch Mandy
That Shin Godzilla scene has big Dio energy
I always felt like Woo's From Riches to Rags is his most insane film. The IMBD/Letterboxd plot summary covers like 30% of the events of the movie and still feels like someone describing their last fever dream
i mean admittedly i probably wont watch most of these BUT this list did make me rewatch ginger snaps after like forever and and i still love it so thank you.
Nyx, as a cysgender (but non-lobster) male, I think you and Contrapoints are two of the bravest and funniest individuals on UA-cam, and redeem it from being the overflowing spitoon that it is...Brava Fortissimo! Keep well.
Thank you for the cheer-up love! Can't wait to see the hard mode list even though a third of these titles would probably curb my appetite already. I started my quarantine with The Conjuring series and now I'm crushing hard on Vera Farmiga. :/
Good luck & my best wishes to all of my immunocompromised comrades!
Ginger Snaps is my forever teenage guilty pleasure. If you don't know it, it didn't age THAT well but it's still absolutely great for a one time watch if you hate coming of age movies.
Do yourself a favor and watch until the end.
I'm a 100% sure that if I watch these I'll have nightmares but you make me wanna watch them anyways
Heck!!! Dead Alive!!!
So I had COVID last fall and was flopped out on the floor for a few days, and in that time my friends and I watched Dead Alive together over Discord, and that movie keeps coming back up on me like a nightmare I had last week that I can't exactly remember. Also this movie is what COVID-brain feels like. Thank you for helping me remember that Dead Alive was a real movie and not a fever dream
I got so excited when I saw perfect blue!! A lot of these are amazing, especially the handmaiden and serial mom, but Perfect Blue has a special place in my heart.
SHIN GODZILLA.... QUEEN
So glad to see Perfect Blue on here! It's by far one of my TOP favorite movies. Also Paprika! All of Satoshi Kon's works are gold imo :")
finding your channel was a blessing
Anime annnd Nicolas Cage? I need to see Mandy immediately. Plus, Serial Mom is one of my all time favorites! Great video😁
Shocked how much my taste in movies match with hers. Sunset Blvd. is one of my all time favorites.
You know what really distracts me? 700 mid roll ads!
27:54 My grandma took her mother (whom she was quite distant) so see one of his movies, you can imagine how that went
Awesome video, most of this movies seem right up my alley and it makes me so happy, you’re stunning, thank yo so much, stay safe ✨✨
