This film comes across as the unholy love child of Troma and John Waters, especially with the constant references to poo.
One detail I like is when greased up, Big Ronnie acts less like a serial killer and more like an old B-movie monster with superhuman strength. The unabashed absurdity of it all is probably what will make the film a cult hit.

The ending of this film just might be the most depressing shit ever. Drayden sacrifices his love, his life and his ambitions to have his masculinity validated by his fuck-up dad, basically the embodiment of everything repulsive men can be.

  • @nobodynoone4161
    @nobodynoone4161 3 роки тому +91

I have a different interpretation of this movie.
To me, it is all about intergenerational violence and how abuse affects people.
Brayden starts out innocent and trying his best to believe in his dreams, passions and love, but he ends the movie literally becoming a greasy strangler just like his dad due to the abuse the suffered (both by his father and stepfather). He continues the cycle of intergenerational violence by becoming an abuser himself and damaging people he loved in his life (represented by the killing of Janet, and by later agreeing that she was “disgusting” so he could feel justified in the hurt he caused her without admitting blame).
The abuse of Brayden is a theme in this movie, you can see it everywhere. Big Ronnie is much older and has accepted his damaged and abuser self, “the greasy strangler” and takes pleasure in hurting (in the movie represented by the serial killing of each and every person who “did him wrong” in any way) anyone who he feels slighted by. It hurts Big Ronnie every time he stops being “the greasy strangler” (the hilarious screams in the car wash), it’s difficult for him to “mask up” and be a less abusive person. He can only do it with the support of Big Paul, his one best friend, a character who is completely blind (literally and figuratively) to the fact that Big Ronnie is “the greasy strangler” until the strangler’s abuse ends up taking him out. Big Ronnie tries to be normal but the urge to be “the greasy strangler” is overpowering and it’s bad behavior bleeds through “Big Ronnie” as well when he’s rude and abusive to Brayden. He is still capable of masking up enough to fool Janet into getting in a relationship with him, though.
Now, speaking myself point of view of someone who has ADHD and is neurodivergent, I know that according to studies, physical/psychological/sexual abuse (all things Brayden went through), abandonment (Brayden’s mother leaving when he was young), neglect and ultimately intergenerational violence are all things that can cause a person with ADHD to develop anti-social personality disorder (ASPD) later in life.
I see this movie as being about exactly that, both for Brayden and for Big Ronnie, but we only get to watch the process happen with Brayden. Yes, they are codependent, but they’re also extremely lonely because Big Ronnie hurts (kills) anyone who gets close enough and Brayden is just “too different” to meet and befriend people, keep up with relationships.
Big Ronnie wants someone in his life he can relate to, he doesn’t want to be alone. Even if he’s incapable of saying he loves Brayden at the end, he’s the most connected to his son by then than he’s been in the entire movie, because that’s when they realize they are alike.
The weirdness of the world to me symbolizes how many neurodivergent people have an alien and strange feeling when interacting with society in a broad sense. I could honestly do a scene by scene analysis of this movie, there is so much to interpret. The ending especially gets me.
At the end, when we see the fire squad killing the human, vulnerable versions of Big Ronnie and Brayden, the tops of theirs heads blow off, releasing a torrent of grease.
That release to me symbolizes the fact that they kept all the abuse (in the shape of grease) rushing inside their heads, and when they see their “humanity” get murdered through no fault of their own (the firing squad could represent to them/us the culmination of all the abuse both of them suffered in their lifetimes), the abuse (the grease) is now free to take its own form and keep damaging people without guilt, because now the two of them truly ARE the greasy stranglers and greasy stranglers seem to be a different species from humans, or at least that’s how they see themselves. The very end is sad, they do have each other but they both feel/are so severed from humanity that it would be next to impossible for their greasy/abusive selves to integrate with society again, hence why they’re shown as primal beings.
This is not the only piece of media to deal with intergenerational violence using the grease allegory, by the way. Junji Ito’s “Glyceride” is also an amazing take on that, it’s a painful read on how family can make or break someone (especially a neurodivergent person), and how familial abuse can often feel like you’re covered head to toe in grease: you try to wash it away but it feels impossible, and everything you touch turns greasy too.
Thanks for making a video on one of my favorite movies, May.

My mom was a very dominating and controlling person in my life, and it was fine when I was younger, we were really close, but as I got older we started fighting. It wasnt until later when i found myself getting into one sided, borderline codependent relationships that I realized how codependent our relationship was, or at least how unhealthy. I would attach myself to one person, basing my whole life around them, being happy if they are happy, trying to please them and stay out of the way, do whatever they wanted and minimize my own needs. And then I realized that that's how I used to be with my mom. And I realized how fucked up it is that she made me feel that to be a good kid was to bury who I really am and only exist as an extension of her and whatever dreams she was trying to live through me. Anyway child/parent codepedence isn't talked about enough, thanks for doing so

I personally enjoy "Fingers" more (made a year or two later, stars the same actor who plays the dad as an asshole who collects human fingers) but "The Greasy Strangler" is certainly a unique experience. Comparing it to Tim and Eric was appropriate as I was drawing a few parallels of my own, only in this case those similar elements work in the movie's favor rather than being insufferable.

I marveled at how weridly beautiful the art direction, lighting and costumes are: eye-gouging neons mixed with suburban surroundings now out of style, extremely kitschy and in decay. holy shit this was great, i need to watch this movie...the gender politics of the greasy strangler intrigue and astound me. also i'm not sure what you have planned, but i would love to hear your thoughts on reallllyyy early slashers like "blood feast" or (entirely unrelated) the movie "absentia"

So one of my housemates knows the guy who plays Oinker and when he found out I’m a fan he sent me a hot pink beanie with the word greasy on it. Not sure what to do with it since it’s not really my style and I feel like the overlap between people whose style it is and people who wouldn’t feel violated wearing greasy strangler merch is very small. Maybe I should just embrace it and get a turtleneck and mini shorts in a matching color 🙃

Greasy Strangler was on my watchlist for a while and then I saw you did a video about it so I made that movie HIGH PRIORITY and watched it on Discord with 5 friends tonight so I could then come and watch your video. I can't remember the last time I laughed this much watching a movie!
One friend loved it as much as I did, one left, two suffered major psychic damage and one became unresponsive, hopefully fell asleep. So, it's definitely a divisive one XD
