“Now I have no right to talk about men, because I haven’t been a man for a couple of years now. And that’s rad.” This is how I feel, but about women, even though I just came out.

Your take about capitalism and masculinity/homoerotic undertones is interesting. I think I got similar vibes, though the way I framed it in my head was that the conflict in The Lighthouse felt very much like older generations (Boomers/Gen X) vs. younger generations (millennials/Gen Z). The speech Robert Pattinson gives where he basically felt forced to be in his position and current job, as well his frustration as his dissatisfaction at life, feels like the experiences of younger generations having worse stations in life while the older generations (Dafoe's character) just tell them to keep working and be respectful. I haven't seen this interpretation anywhere else, but it's fascinating to me. Granted, this was a few weeks ago when I saw the movie and looked at what others were saying. Pattinson's character, as flawed as he is, resonated with me.
As you mention, Pattinson's character wants to achieve progress (go up to the light), to get out of his terrible circumstance, to climb the social ladder, and his violence and anger as he keeps trying mirrors the frustrations of younger generations trying to make the world better and have good lives while the profit-driven system established in the current system is butting against that--and the older generations in power scorn them for trying. Dafoe taunts him but at the same time wants his companionship. They seem to seek validation from one another. The climate change thing fits too, where in the end, all the people on Earth (or the island) are stuck dealing with this terrible consequence and ultimately unravel each other because they cannot overcome their differences.
What strikes me about Pattinson is how he has a set idea of what he deserves. Some would call this him being "entitled," but when younger generations try to follow in their parents' and grandparents' footsteps and have what they have but cannot due to the system, they grow disillusioned. Why can't he have the light? Why does Dafoe deserve it and he doesn't?
    Good luck with your surgery!

Oh that is a great angle! Also, the part where Pattison's character complains about the light house barrack being way too ruinous for him/them to work in, let alone fix, fits really really neat into that approach imo.

I agree with your interpretation of the themes regarding masculinity and power, but for me the heavy storms on the sea weren't a metaphor for climate change, I think that would be to literal for this kind of film. I think there's more of a lovecraftian element to them: The ocean is an endless, dark, untamable void to which the small island with the lighthouse is an illusion of safety and reason, always on the brink of being swallowed by the waves of madness. The weather reflects the state of mind of the characters. As they continue to distance themselves from their humanity the weather gets more uncontrollable.

The title scared me ngl, but I was ready to hear your criticism of it, being you're so passionate about The Witch. So glad you enjoyed it!! My hope is that people will start taking Pattinson more seriously as an actor after this, because the performances in this film are an absolute masterclass.

Have you seen Good Time? After that Cronenberg flick he starred in, Good Time was the first time I got to see him truly act (& thankfully, never saw a single Twilight film and had no negative perception of his capabilities), and he absolutely blew me away. It’s the same duo that directed the current hit Uncut Gems, & I highly recommend it to anyone who’s down with some truly different filmmaking.

Not long after it came out, before I had seen the trailer or heard of it, my brother in law recommended it to my partner. He showed us the trailer and I remember being intrigued.. A few weeks later we decide to stream it since it wasn’t out of theaters yet. Partner finds it, grazes the description to make sure it sounds right... sounds right, we press play and start to watch... ....okay well I thought the trailer was in black and white. but ...younger old timey mariner is working with older old timey mariner at a spooky lighthouse.. the older guy is weirdly protective of the lighthouse... sounds about right..ok I thought Robert Patty was in this but maybe the beginning is weird...ok isn’t this supposed to be spooky this is lame where’s the mermaids...
turns out there’s an early 2000s movie also called the lighthouse about two lighthouse keepin dudes, one older and weird and protective of the lighthouse, the other younger and newer and seemingly more sensible, a dark secret from the past is exposed, and spooky omens/drunken insanity ensue. But it’s old and not scary or even good and no mermaids, or orgasmic god light.
We watched the off-brand Mandela effect lighthouse for almost 45 minutes before I realized I must be going crazy and nobody I know would ever recommend this movie, and the trailer I was shown looked way cooler. I googled it and sure enough we done goofed. I was pissed I wasted all that time and had to start the actual real film so late, but also amused by our idiocy and relieved that it wasn’t just the biggest disappointment of the century.
I just wanted to share that because every time I watch anything about this movie or even think about it I remember this weird twilight zone moment

Damn, I really dig the energy you exude, homegirl. Really earnest, lots of passion for what you speak about, & your perspective on things like masculinity is incredibly thoughtful, and doesn’t cast any judgment while doing so. IMO, that’s going to be the most effective way to get a message across to an audience that might take personal offense to the subject being mentioned, & your speaking skills navigate that treacherous topic quite skillfully.
Also, always gotta give props for the 🤟. I’m a 28-year-old in college, & the younger people laugh and jokingly call me Radical Chris, since they think that sorta gesture is purely a product of the 90s (which is maybe half-true).
Appreciated your thoughts, & looking forward to what you discuss next, seeing as this is the first video of yours I’ve seen, & don’t even know what your typical content is!
    Rock on, homegirl 🤟

I thought it was fascinating the degree of mythic resonances they went through with it. It had a definite Tartarus sort of vibe. Pattinson's character was quite clearly the condemned, for the sins we find out later in the film as well as the Promethean sin of his theft of the light (or fire). But instead of Zeus, he's stealing it from Poseidon. His end is him with what is clearly his liver being torn out by seabirds (Poseidon's bird) rather than eagles (Zeus').

    • @AndrewChalk88
      @AndrewChalk88 4 роки тому

I mean a big point of contention was the nature of the crime that led him to the job at the Lighthouse: whether it was done in a Promethean manner (Prometheus having been forethought) or not.

one thing i really loved about the lighthouse was the language they used-- i couldn't completely understand what they were saying because it was a somewhat old form of language, a sort of dialect that you can't fully grasp in this day and age. however, this still made it more immersive! i could get what they were saying through nuances and it made it feel so much more authentic, which is something i totally agree with you on.

I am rewatching you today because I feel safe with you and nostalgic/existencial depressed(?)also so....I absolutely adore you May💋🚬🤷‍♀️🖤🤘💀🎈
Everytime i watch your channel i discover new takes and opinions i relate to then also appreciate on a deeper level for inspiring my reflection on some aspect that is enlightening in a more positive personal or profound level at times. I am truly grateful for everything that resonates in a real way that kinda transcends the actual content topic because your presence and personality has compatible and familiar energy and interesting overall impact individually in a unique and original style i can appreciate and be grateful for ultimately. I dont like to express anything this generic and feel a hallmark or lifetime original vibes that are irritating at best now so please ignore the signature symbolic or sappy general typical cringe or overlook anything too cliche inspired disingenuous unoriginal feeling initiatives to check out on whatever sentiment is inherantly intended in the characteristic context but convaluted and corrupted by absolute stereotype information interpreted by association to the equally unexceptional gross generic stereotypes presented initially as nothing more or too negated by natural consequence connections. I am trying to say how meaningful or special something sentiment felt but its fundamentally flawed and faulty since the subject matter is unequivacally casual and opposite in every reasonable reality by mannet of the motivating interest influenced by factors of contradictory characteristic correlations such ad the impersonal relationship being stranger caliber aquaintance and overall disconnected reality of whatever personal intentions to express without being ireationally hypocritical and blissfully devoid the reasoning beyond obliviously ignorant level stabdards. Since i can excuse it as imaginative and creative and am already weird socially i will stand by this run on epic record of remedial or regressed resouceful ranting nonsense its too late to redeem myself from now just know it is heartfelt and best intended to manifest as magically articulate and fully positive meaning and statements symbolically supporting all you are and do. I platonically just love you as a spirit soul and sister by self imposed dranatic delusions interpreted and expressed as this non explaination excuse to be so lame but also genuine and sincere saying you are a treasured creator during the struggles only comforted by chronic online accepting loser status for now and the behaviors it entails however unfortunate they are when amplified by sober self awareness to be all in on being this way still. 🤘🙃🎈much love either way though for real😎🖤

I broke up with my girlfriend of five years 20 days after Midsommar premiered, she took my kids and I’m getting them back tomorrow after not seeing them for over 130 days so yeah I’m excited! Great video! Hope surgery goes well!

"I have spent a couple of weeks now thinking about a movie called The Lighthouse."
This was me back in October when I first saw it. I've been hoping it would pop up here ever since, because I value your judgement and opinions and I like hearing what you think about movies!
Unless you didn't like The Lighthouse, in which case I'm going to disregard everything you say in this video. =P

The best art makes you feel uncomfortable. Just because you don't understand that feeling doesn't make you not on quote-unquote the level of the movie

Look, I don't get why I haven't found your channel before now as you should have shown up in my recommends looooong before now but I'm trying to make up for it by binging your videos. As probably evidenced by the wibbly wobbly timey whimey nature of my comments in your videography...

Well, Robert Pattinson's character is basically a Prometheus-like figure (as prophesized by Willem Dafoe's character - "hot promethean plunder!"), hence the aspiration to climb up to the top of the lighthouse/Olympus and "steal" the light/fire of the gods. His punishment is equally mithologically accurate, his entrails being picked at by birds, while he is still alive. Top notch movie.

Really great take on The Lighthouse! I was a bit confused by what I was seeing, but still enjoyed it nonetheless. I really like the social commentary the movie was talking about, basically how being a wage slave is shitty. It really speaks to me personally because I really love music and playing the guitar and no matter how many times I tell my own parents that, they just tell me "Oh, finish up college (and get into a shit ton of debt, but whatever ammirte?), get a good paying job and then you'll be able to do whatever you want!" The older I get, the more I realize that that's probably not going to happen. Late stage capitalism is great!
