Great video with a totally different approach to the entire rig. Crazy to see how differently everyone does this! Aside from using different knots for the connections, I sway away from leaving a loop on the end at the hook just because it gives a little extra play to fish and when you’re working with fish that move a lot quicker it just gives them a way to put more strain on the line. All in all a great video though.
Thanks a million for watching and leaving some great feedback back and awesome compliment. I truly appreciate it and your support for the channel. Thanks again. Tight lines & take care ;)
Personally I like the Trilene knot for the swivel, both ends . I like to Snell my hook also , I used it a lot when fishing for stripers with bait from a bank .
Thanks a million for watching and leaving some excellent feedback. I truly appreciate it and your support for the channel. Glad to hear it helped. Good luck in your hunt for catfish. Tight lines & take care ;)
Great set up for trout using salmon eggs... trout are notorious for being easily spooked and if they feel any tension they spit it out.. this allows them to pick it up, line slides through the weight and the trout sets themselves..

That rig is one of the best bass rigs when using plastic worm or creature baits.ITS great for flounder and red fish. Another name for it is fish finder rig.We us it in n.c.east coast for drum/chanal bass/puppy drum.Which are all red fish.
I think the bead is there to stop the sinker from hitting the knot on the swivel and potentially getting stuck on swivel. So I’d say it’s pretty much needed.
Why do you use the no slip loop knot at the end not an improved slip or snell? I want to try this for mackerel in Scotland but will it make a difference which knot I use at the end? Is it more likely to break?
Thanks a million for watching and leaving some positive feedback. Never too late... I try to make to tutorials that will withstand the test of time. Tight lines & take care ;)
Hello Heath. I enjoy all your videos. Thank you. Question? I am having a problem with crabs eating all my bait. I am using traditional high/low and pompano rigs. Where I fish, the angle of the line from the tip of my rod to the surface of the water is not steep enough to suspend the bait vertically to keep it off the bottom, which is why the crabs are eating my bait which is usually shrimp or small chunks of croakers, etc. Any suggestions or remedies? Thank you.
You can try using a bobber or popping cork to give your hi-lo rig a more vertical presentation. This might decrease your hook up ratio slightly, but it'll keep your baits off the bottom
Dang Heath. I experience the same thin in similar conditions. Thank you so much for the bobber suggestion. I think I’ll try it!!! Thank you for the question fellow Angler!!! @@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Dang
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes of course you can use it without live bait. It works perfectly fine with either application and is a very productive basic fishing rig. The longer your leader the more stealth you have so just consider that. Thanks again for your support of the channel I truly am sincerely appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
Great video and looks easy enough! I was surf fishing today in NJ with ENE winds around 20mph, and the ocean was angry. Is there any reason why I couldn't use a 4, 5, or 6oz pyramid sinker on this rig? I know the Carolina rig traditionally uses egg sinkers, but I don't think they'll work for me in these conditions. My 4oz pyramid barely (sometime) held today. Thanks!
Been using that design rig since I was 8 or 9 years old back in the 50s in Jacksonville Florida . I can't imagine why people call it the Carolina rig .
Thanks a million for watching and leaving some great feedback. It's definitely one of the original ways to tie a rig that keeps the sinker away from your terminal tackle. It's got many different names, I used Carolina Rig, because that's the most common name for it. Down here in South Florida, it's also know as a "Fish Finder Rig". Thanks again for your support of the channel. I truly appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing If you shorten up the leader to about 6"-10" and use a 1/2-3/4 ounce sinker it's a great rig for sheepshead along side bridge pillings even in a strong current . If you put a bead and an adjustable float above it, it is a great trout rig.
Hey Heath. Awesome tutorial. I’m going to try this setup real soon. What kind of hook and would you recommend for big Catfish fishing? I’ll be using cut bait.
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes, Carolina rig AKA fish finder rig will work great on those bridges down there. can anyone recommend a knot to swivel or hook that leaves the leader line straight and doesn't mess up the leader leaving it looking like shit? thanks in advance. edit - quick question, why a loop knot to the hook instead of say a palomar or clinch knot?
Clinch knots for both questions... just used loop for authenticity. If you wet the clinch knot before tightening it'll help avoid the line warping you are talking about
@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing thanks for your reply buddy. pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by authenticity? would the hook (and bait) not tend to tangle round itself? i've tried lubricating the clinch knot and i still get the same look on both 9lb fluorocarbon leader as well as 60lb fluorocarbon leader. thanks in advance!
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. The Carolina Rig also know as the Fish Finder Rig is not a cast and retrieve tool. nothing but love my brother, but the bead is not an aesthetic choice it keeps the hook from getting stuck in the weight when you cast it, you wanna keep that bead on! if you use the small hole to contact the hook it doesnt matter but when you use a two ended weight like the one youre using youll wanna keep the bead!

Makes no difference what knot you use, the concept of the rig is the same 😁
does the bait eventually get to the bottom ? What is best rig for bass ?
yes bait will eventually hit bottom. I'm not much of a fresh water guy, but i'd say a live shiner with no weight or bobber.
Great video, how to change the hook if you need different sizes?
Just cut it off and tie on the size you want.
