The majority of my playtime is spent in training mode. I got the game two days ago and realized how much I suck at competitive games (I’m more into story-driven games).
there was 1 piece of advice that isnt the best DO NOT over dodge ur role will stale, making it more laggy and give you less invincibility making it useless and punishable
Right, great point. And I'm not saying dodge over and over and over so they can't hit you. I'm saying dodge more often cuz people just arnt dodging lol but once you do more and more, you get used to and it becomes part of your Gameplay, thus, making you better 😎
These tips are helpful at the basic level but I would've loved to be reminded what buttons do which during the voiceover. "Dodge in the air" but here I am wondering which button that is. Eventually I'll know it by muscle memory but as an absolute beginner, I would've loved the knowledge reinforcement.
I just started playing and definitely agree because I've been watching tip videos and don't know how to do some of the moves shown. I've figured some of it out just from playing, but there are all kinds of cancels, and such people use in the videos I have no idea how to do.
Some more beginner advice I would recommend is like you stated about the second stick and using tilt attacks. What about talking about which controller you recommend and why and what buttons you bind and where and why. I RARELY play on the switch and smash has always been close to my heart from my childhood but the controller just feels so alien to make compared to other setups.
So great question! I use the switch pro controller. I've been using it since the switch launch so it just feels right to me. But if know plenty of people who use the GameCube controller still. It all depends on what feels good to you 😅
@@onestep Yeah I wasn't big for the game cube jumped into PC gaming around that time and haven't looked back. I also bind my buttons differently because of how in Mario we used to hold the run button with my thumb and jump with the pad of my thumb I had to swap smashes controls around because having two jump buttons was ridiculous to me.
I've been playing Smash Bros. since day one and I consider myself a pretty good player but when Ultimate came out I got pretty humbled. I hold my own most of the time but the biggest issue for me in my matches since the first Smash is I don't block enough. I dodge more than block and now trying to actually block more which I've seen some improvements lol.
The funny thing is, I do try to block more, but when I do, that always ends up being the time the CPU decides to grab me so it's like I still get punished for trying to be better😂
Everyone changes their buttons based on preference but block is typically the right or left trigger and and dodge is a movement (left, right, etc) + the block button is a quick succession
@@onestep one of my favorite characters to play as is Roy, followed by corrin, sonic, and of course wii fit girl, people like to joke, but she hits hard
Thank you for the tips! I've been playing for around 6 months and i'm still pretty trash. I play greninja a lot, and I can take on a level 7 or 8 cpu probably 99% of the time. The problom I'm having is that when I play against real people in quick play, they are just so much better than me. They never let me touch the ground, and juggle me in the air. I don't know if its just me, but I sometimes have a hard time keeping track of my character on the screen because I'm not sure if I should be focusing on my character or the enemy. When I loose a bunch in a row, I get angry and use the character that the person who beat me was using, but that doesn't work because I most likely won't know how to use that character effectively. What character would you recommend, and how can I find a character I enjoy that is decently good?
Mmmm those are great questions and yet hard as well 😅 to find the right character takes times of trying characters out and who is the most fun to you as a player. But for recommendations, some great and easy choices are Pikachu Rob Bowser Donkey Kong Captain falcon Fox King K Just to name a few But everyone’s play style is different. It’s like learning any skill, just takes time and practice. Keep it up!
I’m playing a local smash tournament tomorrow, I’ve played less than an hour total of ultimate and any experience I have with other smash games is years old, I’m obviously going to win, because you don’t get between a poor man and his prize money, I will update with how I do after the tournament.
I try to grab and block so hard but all of my opponents dodge my grabs and do attacks where it doesnt even matter if you block. Its so annoying, i can never win.
Dodging is.. generally bad. Very punishable. At a casual level it's great, once you start getting even remotely competitive you'll get slaughtered for dodging.
an important point to emphasise is that rolling is NOT a movement option, it should be exclusively used to avoid things and even then mixed up with dashbacks
Yeah I've just never played a switch and I don't really know the control so I'm just trying to figure out how to get the training mode. I really don't know what I'm doing.
Dude back in melee my friend and I dodged non stop trying to outsmart each other. Don’t OVER dodge, but it should be part of your arsenal. Just learn the balance
The amount of stuff that I've parried or blocked even as a super beginner player just by learning to block more made me feel like a God at the game LMAOO
@@onestep My girlfriend got me into the game just a week or so ago -- less than 35 hours of playtime -- and I've been playing against her and her friends.. one of which is someone who just got a college eSports scholarship she's so good... good practice, and they can tell me all about the mechanics, but good Gods I was getting destroyed for a minute LOL
I'm trying to improve and beat 2 CPU at the same time. And making them Team up against me because I always win in 1 on 1 battles with the CPU. (Difficulty level 9)
I love the concepts and everything you explained and I've been practicing Non-Stop but every time I come against really talented like godlike players I just no match for them. And I've been practicing Non-Stop and trying to how to better my game style play. And I keep making the same rookie mistakes like if I'm playing against can or you I keep falling for there finisher the show you ken. It's very easy for me to fall for. I Guess my question is how do I be one step ahead of my opponent.
Ya learning to read you opponent is a hard skill to learn. It's basically learning to guess correctly what your opponent is gonna do next based on the situation you're in. Once you learn what all characters can do, you start to learn what moves they're more likely to do in certain situations. Then if you guess right you can counter. But if you guess wrong you either miss, or you get punished instead 😅 it's hard but just takes practice 😁
What I'm thinking is. I'm being inside my head too much Right. I randomly just start fighting. Like I don't what kinda game plan. I never been in elite smash player. So idk what it takes. But I think I have passion. Cuz the way I see smash it's a game if human chess. There playing chess I'm playing checkers. That's the way I see it. I always fall for easy Bate. I guess that where I'm coming from.
@@chrisslayer4930 ya for sure! And it can be hare getting out of that! But don't let that drag you down. I still struggle with it. It's a skill thst just takes time. Keep up the work and you'll get there 🔥
The biggest issue with this video is you dont teach people how to do these things. You are assuming these bigginers know you to perform these moves. I have had this game for 2 days now and I dont know how to dodge and I dont know how to perform Smashes. Your tips dont exactly help for thoise who dont know how to perform these and those are the people this video is more catered to. I dont know if theres a tutorial anywhere in the game, I havent been able to find one but my knowledge of the game is limited to what I have been able to figure out on my own which is pretty much your basics, how to jump, attack, Throw, Block. which I learned by pressing buttons at random.
My smash coach explained to me that if possible, use your jump then your up special if you are below the stage. That gives you less frames in between so it’s a bit quicker. I hope you understand this it’s the best advice and the only way I can put it😢
The dumbest thing about these games is that you can't put "Smash" attack on a single button! Why! We have 2 buttons defaulted to shield, jump, and dodge. But you need a 2 button combo for a smash attack? Really?
see normally instead of practicing on practice mode i practice with low level cpus because its more of a challenge wnd for me its easier to practice on it since normally i play with friends
