‘Meteor (Smash)’ is the correct term for a downward-launching attack in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Meteors in Ultimate work the same way as a spike in Melee, but the game itself refers to them as ‘Meteor Smashes’ or ‘Moves with a Meteor effect’. All Meteor moves work properly in Ultimate so the term ‘Spike’ is unnecessary albeit accepted. It is not an incorrect term.
spike is what should be used though because it is what a spike is in melee and it makes communication between the communities easier. even if it is referred to as meteor in game spike is the more widely accepted term
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a spike just a move that causes airborne opponents to be strongly launched downwards, and a meteor is like a spike, but even stronger and _straight down?_
@@Dave_Chrome Pretty much but their strength doesn't matter and spikes, unlike meteors could be canceled in melee and brawl. Since meteor canceling is no longer a thing in newer smash games it doesn't really matter which term you use. Although the game itself refers to them as meteor smashes.

Foxtrotting and dash dancing are similar but not the same. Foxtrotting is moving quickly across the stage by starting to dash but letting go of the stick before you're fully dashing. It's done to cover ground more quickly than walking while still having access to your walking options (e.g. tilts). Dash dancing is starting to dash, then starting to dash the other way, then back to the first direction, and so on, resulting in no change in position. It's used to make your movement hard to predict and mess with your opponent's spacing, as your opponent doesn't know whether you're going to move quickly towards them or quickly away.
Don't forget about Screen KOs: when you knock an opponent into the upper blast zone and his character smacks the front of the screen. Also there's Background KOs: the exact same thing as a Screen KO, just the character falls into the background and disappears with a losing cry that's extremely satisfying to hear.

this is one of those videos I really appreciate, as I feel like so many of these terms are either you know them or you don't, and there is a frustrating area of miscommunication because of that, so thank you for bridging the gap with this video!
Something you missed, in airdodging, you CAN still freefall if you just hit the shield button rather then input a direction. I use it a lot more then i do directional dodges.

Gotta correct you on your spike terminology -A meteor is any move which sends downwards (faster than connecting hits like those from falco fair). -A meteor smash is a move which sends downwards quickly, but the hitstun ends, meaning the enemy has an opportunity to recover (it also has the extra meaty sound effect). -A spike is a move which sends downwards and has very long (infinite?) hitstun, Think of chrom and ike up b. They also have the same meaty sound effect. In conclusion, most things in this game are meteors or meteor smashes, but there are some spikes (in smash 4, the only spikes were from items, no fighters had any, ultimate is different though). Hope this helps.
Now I gotta correct you on that, in Melee: -A meteor smash sends you straight downward and can be meteor cancelled by jumping or using Up B 8 frames after the hitlag ends (like Captain Falcon's Dair and Marth's Dair in the PAL version) A spike sends at an angle beyond the meteor cancel threshold, thus can't be meteor cancelled (Falco's Dair, Marth's Dair in the NTSC version) -In Brawl: The meteor smash angle threshold has been widened to the point that no playable characters has a true spike. Spike is only used as an informal term. -In Smash 64, Smash 4 and Ultimate: Meteor cancelling isn't a thing, therefore every meteor smash is also a spike. The terms are interchangeable.
@@FierceFIYA I wont argue with you on any of your points there except for smash 4 and presumably ultimate (because I don't know or care for any of the other games), because I know that spikes are specific and kill from 0, like arceus' spike, but other moves are only meteors and meteor smashes. I would direct you towards the wiki for confirmation, because unless I'm interpreting it wrong, it corroborates my points. www.ssbwiki.com/spike
Fun Fact short hopping is done by quickly releasing the jump button NOT lightly tapping the button. its all about letting go early not touching it lightly. Still appreciate the help your doing for the community!
Very, very helpful. I'll keep this in mind. Also, I don't know how commonly used it is in Tournaments but my favorite term is "Disrespect". I was kinda hoping to hear that one here. Disrespect - Spiking someone that can't recover or taunting before a kill, just to mock an opponent or make a statement. Not actually helpful, but it is hilarious.
15:40 "calling spikes meteor smashes is incorrect" except for the fact that the game literally calls it meteor smashes Examples of this include: -Spirits such as Ashnard which have the "Toss and Meteor" skill, which increases the power of attacks that launch upwards and meteor smashes -One of the challenges requiring you to kill 3 lvl 9 CPUs with meteor smashes within 3 minutes
Theres a difference between a spike and a meteor smash. I believe it has something to do with whether you are able to act out of it or not. Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure theres two
@@Doritochi I just looked it up just to make sure I wasn't getting it wrong: All smash games have meteor smashes, but melee is the only one to have spikes due to a bug. So, not only is meteor smashes a correct term, when talking about Ultimate there's no such thing as spikes

Dude, I wish I had found this when you first published it. Would've saved me a ton of time labbing Ultimate, and of course the extra time it took figuring out what "labbing" was.
While meteor is the correct term for launching an opponent down downwards Spike is easier to say in the fast-paced realm of Smash announcing. Mario's Forward Air even resembles a volleyball Spike. Although connecting with it the proper thing to say is that the opponent got dunked.
No idea. A whiff is an attack that misses. A whiff punish is when you punish when they whiff. Rolling past warlock punch and countering with something else etc.

14:36 I came for this one term (sour spot) and you have to insult me😂
this is one of those videos I really appreciate, as I feel like so many of these terms are either you know them or you don't, and there is a frustrating area of miscommunication because of that, so thank you for bridging the gap with this video!
wait i'm banana boi and you are banana boy
that's confusing
IMPOSTER!!!!
4:40
Been playing ultimate since release date and had no idea dodges slowed down…
That is REALLY good to know.
Thank you so much 🙏
Something you missed, in airdodging, you CAN still freefall if you just hit the shield button rather then input a direction. I use it a lot more then i do directional dodges.
Freefall is when you can’t do anything like after you up B
I already knew all the terms in this video, but it was so well put together that I couldn't stop watching. Great job!!
A perfect shield is when you block the moment someone hits, a perry is when you let go the moment someone hits while you're shielding
They changed it so now perfect shielding is when you let go
In Sm4sh, it was called power shielding, in Ultimate, it's now called parrying
ya know i gotta say with me being new to smash bros ultimate and wanting to be good and master my 2 characters which are king k rool. and roy i feel like these videos are definitely gonna help me get better at the game im glad my buddy told me to watch your videos since im new and im trying to acutally get good.
Gotta correct you on your spike terminology
-A meteor is any move which sends downwards (faster than connecting hits like those from falco fair).
Now I gotta correct you on that, in Melee:
-A meteor smash sends you straight downward and can be meteor cancelled by jumping or using Up B 8 frames after the hitlag ends (like Captain Falcon's Dair and Marth's Dair in the PAL version)
A spike sends at an angle beyond the meteor cancel threshold, thus can't be meteor cancelled (Falco's Dair, Marth's Dair in the NTSC version)
-In Brawl: The meteor smash angle threshold has been widened to the point that no playable characters has a true spike. Spike is only used as an informal term.
-In Smash 64, Smash 4 and Ultimate:
Meteor cancelling isn't a thing, therefore every meteor smash is also a spike.
You did a phenomenal job with your explanations, as someone who has experience since the very first smash brothers, great job dude, awesome work
"don't take percent" but what if I'm playing as Lucario? *thonk emoji*
Fun Fact short hopping is done by quickly releasing the jump button NOT lightly tapping the button. its all about letting go early not touching it lightly. Still appreciate the help your doing for the community!
I've always heard your "cool down" referred to as "end lag"
I gotta tell you I was having a bad day until this video cured me. I'm glad it wasn't just a boring tutorial
meteor is the correct term. the reasons people use it is
1. nintendo calls it that.
2. stage spikes are a thing. a thing you didn't cover.
Spikes are only in Melee that's why
Thank you so much for this video! I honestly didn't know the difference between a special and a smash attack until I saw this lol
7:24, Im pretty sure he said "stonks"
I only watched this to learn what teching is. I learned some more definitions and a few tips. Thanks. You did a great job.
B MOVE???
*B MOV E*
I THINK YOU MEAN SPECIAL GOOD SIR!
*Bee movie*
Very, very helpful. I'll keep this in mind.
Also, I don't know how commonly used it is in Tournaments but my favorite term is "Disrespect". I was kinda hoping to hear that one here.
Disrespect - Spiking someone that can't recover or taunting before a kill, just to mock an opponent or make a statement. Not actually helpful, but it is hilarious.
15:40 "calling spikes meteor smashes is incorrect"
except for the fact that the game literally calls it meteor smashes
Examples of this include:
-Spirits such as Ashnard which have the "Toss and Meteor" skill, which increases the power of attacks that launch upwards and meteor smashes
-One of the challenges requiring you to kill 3 lvl 9 CPUs with meteor smashes within 3 minutes
Theres a difference between a spike and a meteor smash. I believe it has something to do with whether you are able to act out of it or not. Could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure theres two
@@Doritochi I just looked it up just to make sure I wasn't getting it wrong:
All smash games have meteor smashes, but melee is the only one to have spikes due to a bug.
So, not only is meteor smashes a correct term, when talking about Ultimate there's no such thing as spikes
@@Knyex Ahh that's what it was. That makes sense guess I just applied that to all smash games. Thanks for clearing that up for me
@@Knyex or just call them spikes because everyone knows what you mean
Thank you. I knew a lot of these terms but some of them I was completely clueless on. I’ve been meaning to figure it out and seen this in my recommendations. It helped a lot.
13:34 NEW TEXT
I knew about how grabs and throws worked, but not really about the forward throw and back throw diff. Thanks!
I’ve gone to like 10-20 tourneys I think and I came here literally just to see what Neutral meant lol
This was such a great video for my friend, even just with the basic stuff. I was dying on the inside every time he said "Neutral Tilt"
so just wondering for like general smash knowledge. so against most of my friends im generally decent, and with some warm up and practice with a specific character i can manage to beat lvl 9 CPUs. however every time i go online and use any character that isnt bowser i usually loose. how do i combat this?
Keep getting better at Bowser for now, then learn other heavy characters, then learn characters similar to those characters, etc.
DORIYAH
Dude, I wish I had found this when you first published it. Would've saved me a ton of time labbing Ultimate, and of course the extra time it took figuring out what "labbing" was.
All the dislikes were from uh ..... uh.... nooobody?
HOLY CRAP what if the dislikes are just bots from youtube and they just do that to make your life more miserable?
While meteor is the correct term for launching an opponent down downwards Spike is easier to say in the fast-paced realm of Smash announcing. Mario's Forward Air even resembles a volleyball Spike. Although connecting with it the proper thing to say is that the opponent got dunked.
Where was the term “whiff”? Did I miss it?
No idea. A whiff is an attack that misses. A whiff punish is when you punish when they whiff. Rolling past warlock punch and countering with something else etc.
@@atheismgaming17 I ended up googling it. Thank you though. I find it so funny you answered me of all people, my UA-cam channel is named Telestial Gaming 😆
@@edwinharbauer2260 Yeah. I find religion pointless, and I like games. I named my channel as such.
That is the best explaination for Base Knockback and Knockback Growth I've ever heard. I GET IT NOW! Many thanks for that!
I clicked on the video because of Daisy
OrangeToadGamer 2005 Me too.
Dude, I cannot say how helpful this is to me even more. I knew most of them, and some got me confused, so this is extremely useful.
(Fun fact, I have three mains, Zero Suit, Bayonetta, and Hero)
Thank you for crediting Chocomiru! Amazing artist
Thanks so much, I've been trying to enter competitive smash but didn't know all the terms until now.
i've been in this fandom for 4 years, mostly reading fanfics and browsing fanarts back in the days (even today), then started watching some smash vids. despite how long i've been here (and finally got the game myself) i never rly understood most of the terminologies i hear on the smash side of youtube until this vid. this educated me lots as fan, even though i'll probably never engage in the competitive field. i sincerely thank you for helping my sorry ass understand the fanon smash ::DD
thanks so much for this! i want to get into my local ult scene sometime but lack of knowledge was one of the things holding me back ;-; bless your soul for actually explaining the stage pick process too lol
Thank you for all your hard work. I have saved this to refer back to as I won't remember everything and I am very much a Smash newbie!
Damn gotta send this to damn near everyone I know now that's just getting into smash. Thanks! Subbed.
This was exactly what I was looking for when I googled "super smash bros. terminology" - Thank you.
excuse me, how the hell does bananaboy not have at least a million subs? I'm subbing to support this guy
Super helpful vid! I watch a lot of pros stream to try to get better idea of how to play but I don't understand what they're describing half the time so this video was exactly what I needed thanks! Also people are right this vid quality made me think you'd have way more subs, keep up the great work and I have no doubt you'll go way up in subs!
Watching this is a throwback. I love your videos, thank you so much for making them. You defined my love for smash, it's community and even fighting games as well, since your tournament video led me to look for local 2d fighting game tournaments in my area and getting involved with the fighting game community. Thank you so much
_Who needs this video when you have __-Pokemon Trainer-__ Flare Blitz?_
But seriously, great vid and I'll definitely study it for when I get Ultimate next week!
I was too scared to ask what shield poking is but it finally makes sense how Yoshi is immune to it
Thanks banana boy for the great terminology guide!
I'm thinking about commentating some matches some day when ever me and my friends play
Never saw this channel before after this video I liked and subbed
Thank you for this. Its good to learn all of these, and also good for my paranoia to know that I dont seem to be missing much.
These terms are unsurprisingly similar to Brawlhalla albeit with different names. I can understand some of it as a Brawlhalla player, but after watching this video, I learned more about it. Thanks!
Under Section 2 - Movement, you forgot Wavedash!
Wavedash - A wavedash is a technique/physics engine exploit in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that is performed by air dodging diagonally into the ground, causing the character to slide a short distance.
Thank you!!! I've been playing smash since the N64, but all these made up terms had me completely lost. Liked and subbed!
If anyone's wondering, 'Rage' starts at 35% and increases slowly until 150%. I think smoke appears on the character icon around 120% but that's just for looks (at least I don't think there's any extra boost at 120%).
P.S. if I'm wrong let me know plz
Edit: Also, you can pick up Diddy's peanut if it's slow enough and you're quick enough
Super helpful video, didn’t know a lot of these but always heard them used. Thank you for putting your time into this!
