First-time player. Played for about 30 minutes, mashed a lot of buttons, made things happen, and realized... "I have no idea what I'm doing." Still had fun. This video is exactly what I need! Thanks!
Same here. But he didn't even go over all the attacks???? Like he shouldn't call this shit the "Ultimate Beginners Guide" if its only an 8 minutes long vid lol
That's what's great about Smash. As for moves, every character has A(attack button), A+forward/back, A+ up and A+ down with the same for the B (special) button. There's no Street Fighter-esque "quarter-circle forward + punch" here.
The last super smash bros I played was melee. Over 15 years ago at a friends house after school. I didn't think that a beginners guide would teach me so much about a fighting game, even though I am so experienced with the typical 2d and 3d ones
two "how to play" videos down and both of them mention tilt-attacks, smash attacks, etc, but no explanation as to what they are or how to do them. thanks
Squigglestix those are the basics explained quite simply in the game.Granted surprisingly the game doesn't do a good job of pointing you in the direction of the help screen and training mode.
Thank you so much for making this! I watched so many so called "beginner" videos on Smash in YT and nobody even bothers to explain what the percentage means at the bottom and start explaining commonly used terms and FPS, etc. This is a true beginners guide and you can take that from someone just getting into Smash.
@@littlebigtube1040 Oh I'm sorry I didn't go into specifics there, In the start menu don't press anything for a few seconds and the tutorial video should show up
I agree this game assumes everyone have already played this game before. There are no training on how to do more advanced attacks and combos besides the basics button mashing. I still don't understand how the cpu never manages to fall off a stage while I'm constantly falling off and only half the time can save myself, because there's no training on becoming better at saving yourself from a fall. I also find myself always turning the wrong way, I'm used to fighting games where you automatically turn towards your opponent. Overall, I say this game is very disappointing due to the fact that the controls are already extremely horrible (among the worst in gaming history) and you can't even use the d pad to move. Very few tutorials on UA-cam are for absolute beginners and doesn't cover everything. I wouldn't recommend this game to anyone, unfortunately, just because learning to become decent takes way too long and there's no enjoyment to that because in order to unlock alot of good characters you have to basically be a pro because they're insanely hard to beat.
My initial reaction to Smash: ‘ok, so... I have a “Do” button... and... everything else makes me jump. Cool.’ I went back to MKII, familiar childhood stomping grounds, until I was ready to admit I was a complete n00b at smash bros.
Great video, first time playing any smash game, I figured out A was attack, and B + LStick was some special attack, but that was about it, I really have no idea what i'm doing, this video has helped get me started i think.
Extremely well produced video, but goddamn this is not beginner friendly. In fact, if you'll allow me to vent just for a line or two, it's basically impossible to find a truly beginner's guide for this game on UA-cam. Every single one that says beginner talks about either dodging, intricacies of shielding, short hops, DI, or many of these at the same time. These are utterly unnecessary concepts to even mention to a beginner. In fact it’s actively harmful to even mention these concepts before a certain point. I'm looking for something I'd feel comfortable sharing with a (totally non-gamer) friend and everything is too complicated. It's like no one has any idea what a beginner really is... Anyway, I enjoyed the channel and will probably keep watching your content because it's so clearly and beautifully presented, but, again, as a beginner's guide this specific video would end up overwhelming a true beginner much more than helping them.
Fabio Bracht great point. Feels like so many players who’ve played smash through the various generations have forgotten what it’s like to be a beginner. I’ve got no clue what I’m reading most of the time when people talk about why to pick / play as a certain character
I can't even position myself properly, some characters have so much momentum that I throw all my attacks in the wind while the CPU flies around me kicking my head
I feel the same way, its like the tutorial are a series of checklist of every mechanic there is, but without context in how to combine them and/or use them. Explaining easy mechanics to hard mechanics is not how a person learns. Maybe is easier if we are thought some basic gameplay strategies to start winning some battles and not feeling like we are mashing, and then start to introducing harder strategies with mechanics not previously mentioned. I think that if we learn with these series of checklist we are going to lose every match, even with a family member that grabs the controller for the first time.
This tutorial is definitely targeted at a demographic like me, as someone who can play competently against friends casually, but who wants to learn some competitive techniques. If you're looking for a guide for a total beginner, video tutorials are usually unnecessary. From a written IGN guide, I learned that all the attacks are just combinations of A/B, control stick input, and whether you're on the ground. From there, I just messed around in Training mode with characters who I liked, practiced a bit in battle mode, and that was all it took to go from "accidentally walks off edge" to "fun to play with."
THIS VIDEO IS THE REASON WHY I AM SAVING FOR SMASH, I was on the fence already and it is exam season, but after this video I'm hooked, I will get it on boxing day.
I’m really happy you made this video, I just got smash and I can’t even beat a lv 9 cpu. (Yes I know, I suck, no need to rub it on) Either way I’m glad you made this series.
I am getting better (can beast Level 8 CPU's pretty consistantly, and have close games with Level 9's that can go either way), but I found the most common pitfalls were...: (1) Not using the shield at all, feeling like I wasn't "playing properly" and then using it too much. (2) Getting constantly mixed up in the heat of battle, and often ending up facing/attacking the wrong direction. (3) Not grabbing at all, feeling I wasn't "playing properly" and grabbing too much (use someone like Young Link to get used to grabbing/throws in a way that is easier and more forgiving). (4) Immediately hitting a panic Up-B to recover, rather than taking some time to use my jump and analise the situation a bit (this depends on your character though, as some have terrible recoveries). (5) Going straight down when falling from the top of the screen (this will get you destroyed online). (6) Not using short-hop neutral airs. This sounds complicated, but is basically pressing jump and the basic attack button at the same time (while not pressing any direction). If your character has a good neutral air attack (i.e. big hit boxes, quick startup, etc.), this can be a godsend when the opponent is in and around your personal space. However, the common noob mistake I didn't make was going for Smash Attacks all the time, as, for the two characters I was using (i.e. Lucario and Zelda), these moves just seemed kinda slow, easy to telegraph and limited in range. However, if I had initially picked, say, Bayonetta, I don't doubt that I would have spammed the hell out of Smash Moves, lol. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also, be ready for online being pretty brutal. Even if you can dismantle high-level bots with your meticulous playstyle, human players tend to be very aggressive and in-your-face (i.e. either "fast and skilled" or "fast and mashy" - depending on their level of play). Any plan and tactics tend to go out of the window as you try and weather the onslaught, and you will rack up online losses initially - no matter how well you prepare offline. Some mindless spammers/mashers are really difficult for the "trying to learn and get better, but do everything too slow" beginner. They are using instincts and reflexes, while you are supressing these things in favour of planning and considered execution. Not a good combination in a frantic game like Smash. However, if you can overcome this tough period, soon your instinct/reflexes will merge with your planning/execution and you eventually should be able to dismantle these players.
After trying out various controls, I have now found a game where I actually prefer the Pro Controller over the JoyCon. I'm usually fine using the JoyCons in anything, but Smash? Nah. The JoyCons don't actually feel that crash hot. Pro Controllers actually feel pretyt damn good to Smash with. Especially since I switch Attack to B and Special to Y, leaving A to Jump to combo for short hop attacks. Feels more Gamecube-like without actually being a Gamecube controller. :P

Sweet video. I haven't played smash since N64, but I'm super hyped for this since so many of my friends play. Already got my copy and was struggling a bit, but you shed some light on some points. Thank you!
Saved to watch later. Thanks for this as I haven't really ever played Smash beyond very casually at friends houses back in the 64 days and while I am doing ok with Marth I know I am leaving a lot on the table (especially in regards to not talking to my death when I am not even that damaged)
Ever since I found your channel it has become one of my favourites. However since you did all 14 weapon tutorials in Monster Hunter World it cemented it as the best channel in the Galaxy, maybe the universe to learn every detail of a season or fighting style. I mean you tell us what we need but go beyond everyone else. Teaching every little in and out in the most logical and ready to understand way. Most importantly you make your videos easy to understand and as simple as possible but without leaving anything out and taught in a logical order that makes sense. I know that is the hardest thing to do as a teacher. I mean the work you put into this MHW videos was amazing. I am going to be firing up MHW again and might try some new weapons this time while I get ready for the new content and the new expansion. I am very rusty. I even write down and summarised about 3 seasons because you had Combos I had previously not known. I recommend anyone to watch them on a weapon you know and there is a good chance you will learn something you did not know. For the practice area and practice for 1 to 3 hours or more on a brand new stain and when you have your first fight it will be risky with it and you will give the stain the best chance of you liking it without getting frustrated. I ended up using the light boagun and Lance which are the least popular after hunting horn. Yet against Kulth Taroth I find to be some of the most effective. That was using Switch blade, LB etc and shine of the most popular weapons. I can highly recommend the land against most monsters you are having trouble with but can be harder against just a couple. However if used right like any weapon you can beat anything with the right load out. As you learn in Monster Hunter everything is viable and nothing is the best. They are all very fun weapons. I wish MHW won a lot of awards at the game awards.
thanks for this vid.....ive not played smash bros. since my mate brung it over on the N64 20 odd years ago and i had no idea what i was supposed to do then lol... but at least now i know its about knocking your apponent off the arena rather than a straight K.O. like most fighting games......
@@ryantremaine1236 Glad about this but still wish the rest of the MHGenU weapon tutorials had been a thing. Or at least a Valor and Alchemy one for each weapon.
Insightful guide Arekkz! I especially did not know the last one about who's in the lead in timed matches. I just got this game this morning, been having a blast running through it in portable mode doing classic mode. Also bought a Nintendo Pro Controller, so I'll be looking forward to using that. Have a good rest of your day.
When a beginner first tries the characters after unlocking them, who has the most seemingly powerful kit? I mean, just lots of single input moves that seem super strong and easy to perform/hit against other noobs (i.e. before you start thinking about frame data, ending lag, etc.). I remember Palutena, Bayonetta and Zelda just feeling like they had ridiculous tools straight off the bat.
This sounds really cool. Yeah I’m not exactly the target demographic given my hours in smash 4, but I just love this video so I’ll be sure to watch them just to support.
I played smash brawl quite a bit and then picked up a little bit on the 3ds. But I'm watching these video's before getting back into it to refresh my memory. (Got for xmas) thank you for these video's. I will go practice. Btw, idk if you add in a later video but I think that watching pro tournaments helps a lot as well. You get to see how the characters you want to play, played in a very efficient way.
Coming from brawlhalla, smash is definitely more polished and a better game in most areas, but due to the amount of effects a actually am having trouble keeping up lol. But I got used to it after 5 minutes.
back when i was a kid, i had to figure out how Melee and SSB64 worked, had no youtube yet, had the internet but the smash scene was pretty fresh and i was like 10, some of this stuff i never learned this whole time 😂
Just to let you know, Ultimate didn’t add perfect shield, it’s been in the game for a while, Ultimate just changed how it worked. In the old games you did a perfect shield by pushing the shield button at the moment you were hit. Now you have to let go of the shield button when you are hit. Makes it a bit riskier.
You know what would be a good video, if you finally explained all those fighting game terms and how exactly they apply to smash. Things like hit confirm, teching, ect.
You forgot to add the part about no matter what controller you use, you still have to learn the GameCube controller because every single UA-cam video will only use GameCube controls to tell you what to do
Keep this up!!! Been a while since I have seen one of your videos dude. I was a fiend back m the day. Glad to find you again. Also, keep this series going!!! Love it!!!
Beginner here, signing up for getting my ass brutally beaten. Very excited! Bit bummed I'm swamped in social stuff and work for the next couple of days ;p

Well better late then never. Thank you for doing this I never played smash before. So thank you for doing this
thanks for this vid.....ive not played smash bros. since my mate brung it over on the N64 20 odd years ago and i had no idea what i was supposed to do then lol... but at least now i know its about knocking your apponent off the arena rather than a straight K.O. like most fighting games......
I hope you actually keep the series going ..
Working on the next one right now!
Thanks dad
@@ryantremaine1236 Glad about this but still wish the rest of the MHGenU weapon tutorials had been a thing. Or at least a Valor and Alchemy one for each weapon.
I have that same picture for my other profile 😂
Insightful guide Arekkz! I especially did not know the last one about who's in the lead in timed matches. I just got this game this morning, been having a blast running through it in portable mode doing classic mode. Also bought a Nintendo Pro Controller, so I'll be looking forward to using that. Have a good rest of your day.
Follow you since monster hunter world.
Your guides are GOLD!! Keep up the good work!
I've never played this before and for some reason I'm very excited hahaha I just got it and here I am.
This will be my first real fighting game! I mostly play Pokémon and Zelda and so on, so this is kinda new!
I’m really exited
This! I always spammed side dodge and always get caught. Thanks for the tip
I needed this because i just got a new smash i've been playing brawl and meele most of my life
This sounds really cool. Yeah I’m not exactly the target demographic given my hours in smash 4, but I just love this video so I’ll be sure to watch them just to support.
I’m learning about the fire triangle in chemistry but the smash bros triangle sounds better 😂
I have been play super smash bros for now 10 years and this game is so much fun but does not feel like the old game
Thanks for this, the last Smash i played was Brawl
Very nice. The first video that actually does what it says in this topic
Was invited to play yesterday and was getting destroyed. Looking forward to this series!
I love the percentage it’s not like health as much
back when i was a kid, i had to figure out how Melee and SSB64 worked, had no youtube yet, had the internet but the smash scene was pretty fresh and i was like 10, some of this stuff i never learned this whole time 😂
im so glad that you are doing super smash videos after you helped me out so damn much in monster hunter world bro, god bless :D
Smash tends to use their own terms for some reason. Like end lag instead of recovery frames.
You forgot to add the part about no matter what controller you use, you still have to learn the GameCube controller because every single UA-cam video will only use GameCube controls to tell you what to do
Used to play on the wii all the time but I can’t remember how to play at all so thanks for this!
I haven’t played smash since 64 thank you
I played brawlhalla for 40 hours and thought it would transfer over to ssbu
I was very very wrong
I did the same
I played sm4sh for 800 hours and I could barely apply extended dash dancing in my gameplay, smUsh will be hell and I love it.
Brawlhalla is descent game and free to play, but is there an offline mode for playing the game?
Only thing brawlhalla helped me with is item throwing lol
@@a3p7rjac Yes I'm a Diamond in Brawl. I had to get smash because I wanted to see all the hype.
Perfect. Thanks man! I didn't know where to select my saved control schemes.
I’m late to the party but I’m glad I got the game. Love this game!
Good for you!
Thank god for this vid. This is my first smash and I have no idea what Im doing.
So far I just spam smash attacks and Kirby’s down b. Works every time.
lmao me too kirbys hammer is more powerful than an ultimate move
I haven’t played smash since the wii so I kind of need this
Good job on the videos bruv. Large up yourself. Always informative and to the point. Bless
Thanks for the vid! Never played Smash so it’s helpful to get a rundown of the mechanics.
I have played smash bros for so long but have never tried to actually be good at it, I’m hoping this video will help change that lol
4:17 It was not introduced in Ultimate, just changed to be on release of shield rather than when you start to shield.
Congrats on 1million
Thanks for the video ! This actually helps me I'm fresh in the smash world lol never got to play any of the others so this is my first 😅
Love this!!!! I've been wanting to get better on smash so this video is perfect! Can't wait for the future ones!
We love you Arekkz!!!
Omg! Can't wait to beat everyone with Link. Looks so awesome! As always nice video thnx!
Commenting to boost this video, very cool!
Beginner here, thanks so much for this. :D
Really hope this video will help. I feel like the reason im so bad is cuz 1 button can have upto 3/4 attacks depending on which direction you hold the stick and such. It makes it really hard to remember in an instant how to do an specific attack en when to use it
This game has evolved far from the good ol n64.. I used to be decent, but i really need this in order to keep up with these Omae wa mou shindeiru pros
Great vid! Subscribed!
Thank you am not am just bad and gonna play it for the first time
I’m legit playing for my first time after a personal hiatus. pray for me
Screen-shot this: 4:47 it’ll really help!
Bless you for making this
Played Smash THE VERY FIRST time this weekend. and i couldnt do shit. i am used to street fighter stuff and was very confused. thanks for this kind of vid.
Thanks a lot for the teachings. It's very useful.
First in. Thank you for all the great vids.
4:20 No, it didn't. It changed how Perfect Shield worked, but it was in previous titles in series, including Wii U and 3ds.
Ive never played any super smash before till this one, i find I’m learning by mostly trial and error, watching people play and for finer knowledge for thing i quite obviously haven’t pieced together for myself ill just search guides and videos. Im slowly getting it... i tried to read up too much before about this game before playing i just ended up overloading myself. Lol
good ass video with good ass tips and good ass editing.good job!
I need this video! It is great for a noob like me. Please make more :)
Nice vid arekkz, please make a video about the ledge recovery options
Was just thinking there as Simon and ike kicked my ass, that I wish arekkz had a few guides on fighting and boom.
I can’t wait for the next one! 😊
Just ordered the game today, I'm so excited. I held back this long because I had heard that the online part of the game was a total mess, but should nowadays be okay. I hate Nintendo online service and paying for absolutely nothing but cant be helped...
