I just bought one of these. Only has time to give it a test and I’m still kinda figuring this stuff out, but I’m glad I bought it. Great build quality from what I can tell.
I have the two wing extensions on mine, and I love it. I then pick it all up with the sweeper, and finally, I go over the lawn with the aerator before I either re-seed or fertilize.

I remove it all with a yard sweeper. Then have to bag it. That part suuuuuuucks.
I need to stop looking at your videos... lol. I am new to taking care of my lawn... so I have been reading and watching videos in preparation for the delivery of my John Deere... Learning a lot on how to take care of my lawn so that I can put it to practice starting June 1st.
So I know now that I need a plug aerator and a thatcher. Did you consider the combo JD has? MT42C Multi-Tool 42 in. Combo (Plug Aerator and Thatcher) part number LP39089...? That is the one that I started to look at...
So I already have the footage, just need to put the video together, but you can get extensions for this one to make it a 56", now I'll admit I wasn't planning on doing that when I had my D105, but it is something to consider... you could probably get away with 1 extension, going to 48", which you can't with the combo, but if the combo works, then go for it! I also have the drop spreader/spike aerator (video coming at some point), that will aerate for now... one day in the future I'll probably go for the 46" or 48", whichever it is, plug aerator only... with bigger tractor come bigger tools! hahaha

for 100.00 more then the other brands this thing is way worth the $$$. I use the pull behind JD 48 inch grass catcher. Believe it or not if you clean the thatch up your exposing fresh dirt which after seeding and watering grows great grass....ahhh thats lawn grass to be clear.
Nice video, thanks! I bought one but I experienced one issue. Mine is John Deere S120, when I attache this detacher to my S120, the tines keep touching the ground when the level is in the detaching position, even when I post all height adjustment screws are in the lowest position. I have to buy a hitch riser. The hitch plate of my s120 is only 6 inches to the ground. I am not sure whether you have met this problem. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!
Unless you have a typo, nothing with that sounded wrong. The tines should be touching the ground if the lever is in dethatch position. Did you assemble it? If you did, maybe the step was missed, if you didn’t, check the manual. There is an adjustment to be made in the wheels dependent on hitch height. You may need to adjust this. I had used this on my D105, which is similar in build to the S120, so you shouldn’t be having any issues. Let me know if you still have issues
@@JoshsGreenGarage Thanks for the quick reply. I assembled it by myself. The manual ( the par of step 5-B: adjusting for proper Tine Action ) said that tine tips should about 1/2 inch above ground surface when in the detaching mode. So that's why I get confused. With the highest setting, I can only make tine tips touch the ground, instead of above ground.
And you’re sure the wheels are set correctly? Honestly that adjustment isn’t the biggest deal, it will just dig up thatch a little harder. If you couldn’t have it off the ground in transport mode, that would be a problem…
@@JoshsGreenGarage I am pretty sure that everything is assembled correctly. If the hitch point on my S120 is 1 inch higher, it can work. Now, the dethatcher is rested on the tines when the handle is in the dethatch position. I am afraid that the dethatcher would become a scarifier as the tips of the tins are so low. I ordered a hitch riser, and hope it can solve the issue.
I bought one of these and i have a question. For some reason the nuts had a chalk lining on one side that prevents us from hand tightening the bolts. Are we suppose to use tools and break through it?
If I remember correctly yes, hand tighten just to hold the parts in place, but not fully tighten because there may be adjustment required to get it to engage the ground properly… then you will fully tighten everything. That compound is a form of lock-tite, to prevent them from backing off.
Hi Josh, I bought this dethatcher I got it together this morning. I got two questions that on assembly and set up.
1st question is did you have issue with the handle adjustment for raising and lowering unit. It just seems like there is not enough movement to pull handle out and move it. I am afraid to pull out on it to much it will just bend it out of shape. I left the space as insturctions called for with leaving locknuts with only two threads showing and It just doesn't seem to have enough play to pull it out and move it.
2nd does this tines set off the level 1/4" or so or do you just set them directly on the floor and tighten up tine assembly right where it sets. I never did see in the instructions that calls that out or did I miss something. I have a picture to send of handle if you have an email address you don't mind sharing

Good questions. So for the handle, mine is as the instructions show, maybe slightly less that 2 threads showing. It will be stiff, and don’t expect it to move so much that the pin clears the lock plate easily, or for it to move so easy that you can manipulate it from the tractor, I’ve always had to get off to operate it. Mine has the paint wore off where the pin slides, it just happens. My suggestion would be to back the nuts off a bit more and see how it feels. The handle is pretty thick steel, so I wouldn’t be too worried about bending it out of shape. I do feel this could have been designed better, but it works.
For the tine adjustment, I just lowered mine to the first hole (less aggressive) and then sat the tines flat on the ground, and that gave me results I was happy with, I don’t remember adjusting it anymore from there. All tractors are different, yards are different, so certain stuff like this adjustment is pretty much up to your liking.
Also if this ends up being too aggressive, then you can readjust it the 1/2” above ground like the instructions say. But I have had luck with the more aggressive setting.
Reason I ask about tine setting off the ground ¼ or ½ inch. I had another brand that actually called that out

Where did you purchase the extension for your dethatcher at?
I got them through the dealer, but you can get them at various online part stores too… part number LP48003.
@@JoshsGreenGarage i went to the local john deere dealer today. I was suprised the parts guy acted like it was a real effort to even look up the part numbers. Ummm not the only dealer in the vicinity 🤷♀️
that is why I say part numbers! make it easy!... not all parts guys or salesmen know as much as the people that are really into this kind of stuff
@@JoshsGreenGarage i talked to customer service at Brinley yesterday. They same the LP os just dealer number and both are same thing.
