I was a young woman in 1966 when this song came out. It was a time of war, vietnam abroad and black americans being beaten and shot in the streets for demanding equality. This song was a warning. Many of the songs from that era are. Society didn't listen then and as recent events show, they still aren't. This song is a warning to all of us.

This is my number one most favorite song. In the 60s when Simon and Garfunkel began singing this song technology was new. Instead of neighbors and familys getting together and communicating like normal people began becoming glued to their tvs. It was like this song was giving a warning to the people but because technology was so new the song by the original artists tho it was great and a classic for that time period, it lacked power and emphesis and so the warning went unnoticed. Now hear we are years later technology has grown and people don't communicate like they one did. Its hard to carry a conversation with someone plastered to the tv, playstation, computer, and God forbid any of us loose our cell phones. And we can even see this song playing out in our society today. Look at all the protests and rioting and dividing thats going on. People talking truth on both sides of the fence but no one is listening to the others point of view or opinion. Its my way or nothing. And so the insanity of it all continues. We as people stay divided in so many ways. At the end of this song you see the people with the instruments crossing the divide to get the people with song sheets and voices. So they could come together and be one people, be whole. As i said when Simon and Garfunkel sang this it was a warning. When David sang this it was all out rage that no one listened now look where we are today. Makes you wonder where we will be as people a decade from now. Love this song thanks for your review.
I've said this before and I'll say it again... A 1965 song written by Paul Simon re-imagined by Disturbed in 2015; datz 50 years!! For me, this is by far the best song these past 5 years!! This song literally ambushes you... catches everyone by surprise! The powerhouse vocals, the amazing arrangement, etc... just a great song reimagined by a Heavy Metal band... done right!!
I love disturbed reference to the neon God, they made. He reference this often in his songs. And it's true people have created a God of technology and "science" they worship above all else
Its funny that the darker more haunting songs really grabs our attention but this version is all that, and even though it is darker and haunting it is also extremely Beautiful the lyrics the voice and what a lovely video and the live version is just as captivating as this one and yes i do remember the original version and I actually hated that song it bored me to death than, I see Disturbed perform it and you wont believe this but I now love the song the lyrics and especially David & Disturbed! After all these years i finally really listened to the lyrics! And fell in love!!! Isn't that something??? Thank you to Disturbed!
He's able to hold a deeper note because he's holding the N, not the preceding E, as he sings the word silence. This is prevalent in a lot of metal singers/songs. I only know that because I heard a vocal coach say it. I'm not that musically smart. Plus, he's a badass.
That's actually not true. He gets more forward resonance by sitting on the N sound but it doesn't extend his breath or range. It's just an artistic choice. And it's an appropriate one because it's like a quiet hum rather than an open "EH" vowel.
I would say that it's more about air pressure and the column of air(power) behind the notes. The quieter, lower tones don't require a ton of air. Those high, floating notes need a full column of air behind them. Power!
I luv both the original and this version in equal measure - for all that they’re so vastly opposed in mood, tempo, arrangement and instrumentation. It honestly is true that music is its own beautiful, timeless, melodic language😍🙌🎼
Yes!!! Which meant, in turn, that when David Draiman one fine day in 2016 invited Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge to sing the song with Disturbed that night in Houston, the harmony part Myles sang had to be reinvented, too. It’s well worth looking up the video to enjoy the result. Myles’s harmony line is quite technically challenging, but it blends amazingly with David’s merged melody to create new harmonies that keep to the spirit of the Simon and Garfunkel original. Myles talked in a different context about analyzing a seemingly complete sonic landscape to identify where sounds can be added for the greatest benefit, and his leaps in this harmony line make me think he must have done that here. Someday I’d love to know how those two managed such a tight performance, seemingly down to their use of vibrato, when they hadn’t sung the song together until the sound check that afternoon (according to Disturbed’s track by track commentary for its album Evolution). Two phenomenal musicians who care more about music than egos made some magic that night.
My favorite thing about this song, aside from everything, is the slow build. Verse by verse there is more to it, more instruments, more power, and when it hits that peak its GREAT
You're not lying. I saw Disturbed last summer and I wore 3 pairs of socks cuz I knew the first 2 were gonna get blown off. I was supposed to see them again this summer but...
David Draiman is actually a classically trained Opera singer that basically fell into Heavy Metal & his range, control & skill is AMAZING! But you really need to listen to Disturbed's Crunch to really grasp exactly how skilled this cover is. You can go with the classic "Down With The Sickness" & IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND. Also this is a Simon & Garfunkel Song from 1964, Paul Simon calls this cover the best version he has ever heard.
His range is fantastic!!! This song speaks to your soul. It speaks to what's going on in the world today. His voice is amazing!!! The video is amazing!!! The Instrumentals are amazing!!! The song is a CLASSIC but the put some heat on top of it! Wonderful job!!!
David Draiman the lead singer has amazing vocal range. The argument of who did this better Disturbed or Simon and Garfunkles original version does not matter, both are equally beautiful. The live version that Disturbed did on Conan O'Brian was bone chilling. I've seen them live 8 times and they never disappoint. David can hit every note on stage like he's in a recording booth. His pronunciation and diaphragm control is damn near perfect...ya gotta check out more Disturbed...i recommend Down with the sickness, "10,000 fists", phil cooling remake of "Land of confusion","a reason to fight"," Stupify",."hold onto the memories",the "vengeful"one and especially " The Light" great song and video
The original is soft and beautiful, the cover is strong and powerful. This is the I Will Always Love You scenario where both are equally great but for different reasons.
You're totally right....David has an amazing voice...and although I really love Disturbed's heavy metal, David has the vocal talent to sing almost any style of music. Their latest album is basically all "unplugged"...."Hold Onto Memories" is one incredible song! This album also includes some other great covers. The song "Already Gone"...really a deep song....and I believe has a deep connection with David's past.
Whether one sings in a low, middle, or high range it's breath control that allows a singer to hold a note. As air flows up from the lungs and over the vocal chords - pitch is created by the frequency of the chords vibrating at a high or low speed. David Draiman has had extensive vocal training because of his desire to become a Cantor in the Jewish faith - who leads the congregation in song and prayer. He obviously had a change of heart with his career goals...but his gift didn't go to waste. 🥰
The song wasn't written specifically for a movie, but it was one of several songs by Paul Simon & Art Garfunkel that was used in the 1967 film The Graduate.
Notice the arch of musicians crossing the river to the people on shore holding sheet music. They need each other to end the silence. Music is the universal language.
David Draiman is a classically trained singer that intentionally held many of notes on N's to add emotion for this song which is a cover for Simon and Garfunkel's original. Yes, you are right that he has a large range as far as registers and/or octaves at his disposal with his voice. The message of the song is absolutely on point and it rings more true today than it did in 1963.
Very well redone and the live version is amazing as well. He is a baritone singer. So his voice is naturally deep. Kinda in the same vocal family of Cash and Elvis
- Thank you for not speaking too much during the song. - The original is pure poetry and melancholy. Damian takes you on an epic journey! -Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. -Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan. -
One of the key things to watch, is the message of how music brings the world together. The people on the other shore had all the sheet music, the people on his shore had all the instruments. That's what brings them together. Just an awesome message that many may not even see. Also, the line in the song; "People hearing without listening" is awesome as well. How many times do we catch ourselves saying; "Didn't you hear what I just said?", "Weren't you listening to what I said?" People hear without really listening.
So glad you reacted to this, I adore this version of the song. This track never fails to give me goosebumps everytime I hear it. Great reaction fella, much love from the UK. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧💞💞💞👍😁🔥
My Good Friend, This is a cover of the Simon & Garfunkle song released first in 1964 and again in 1966. The inspiration of the song comes from the assassination of President Kennedy in November of 1963. I've read comments stating that Simon & Garfunkle's version was a warning. Disturbed's version is the anger for not heeding the warning. David Draiman is the vocalist. He studied to be a cantor and a rabbi. He is also classically trained. There is another song, besides the many others his band has released, called "Hold Onto Memories." Let's just say that it is amazing. Have a wonderful evening and God bless.
Also, also, listen to his live performans, knowing that it is live and without all of that studio staff, uuhh, it's awasome, he is awasome, and he is one of the greatest male vocalist, he never fails during concerts (another one was Elvis, who seems like never failed to, I mean as a vocalist)
**Your facial reactions say it all** This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and Disturbs version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings... 😌 I always feel this song is like a rollercoaster ride, slowly bringing you up to the top, then crashing to the bottom.....Great reaction!!!
The song is about the inability of people to express themselves to others because of fear or insecurities. They use the images of music in theory, but the song is so much deeper when you understand the sadness of the reality behind it. Classic song remade by an amazing vocalist backed up by equally impressive musical score.
He can hold those low notes for a long time because he holds the consonant instead of the vowel. Instead of "sileeeeeeeence" he says "Silennnnnnnnce" It allows for that low tone and vibrato to be held together like that. It's actually something that's often considered to be "incorrect" by vocal coaches, but it works for him in this song.
Oh I've loved Disturbed since 2002! They also do a version of the 80's song "Land Of Confusion" that was originally done by the Band Geniuses. The original version of the song is awesome. And Disturbed does a kick ass job of covering it. I like that you're reacting to an eclectic variety of musical genres and styles. I have extremely eclectic taste in music and I love seeing others appreciate that too!❤
Great reaction! David is actually classically trained as a cantor, someone who sings in synagogue. I love this version, and the video just tops the cake! I would suggest you watch the Conan O'Brian live version of this. David's voice is beautiful, with just a full orchestra behind him.
This is a remix from Simond and Garfunkel but Disturbed blew the original my 80 year old mother loved that song but will now only listen. To Disturbeds verion
David (the singer) DOES have an _AMAZING_ Voice... incidentally he can actually activate both sets of vocal cords when he screams... making that trademark, creepy ass tone that Disturbed has most of the time. He basically harmonizes with himself, all in one scream. He was also the soloist for both his Highschool and College Choirs. He's actually a classically trained singer, basically, who went with hard rock and metal.
I've sung this song many times for karaoke. Those low notes are easy to hit with a relaxed air flow. The high notes require a compressed cavity with a ton of air behind them.
Check out the live performance of this song on Conan O'Brian. It was flawless, even though David had the flu that day. It's truly impressive. Such a great vocalist!
The original of Paul Simon I heard when I was under 10, than heard the Gregorian Chant vertian which I also loved but damn Disturb killed it. The grit in his voice is what I love most, that's why I love rock music. Damn going off track with sharing the real meaning of this song. Though it was song from 1957, the lyrics are on point for current times. Basically he is related to social technology, people consumed with there cellphones, 'the neon lights' - billboards and light effects enhanced music recordings and television. No human relationships and socializing. These days it's 100% on point.
There are very few songs that are not only better than the original, but also bring emotion that can bring a person to tears. For me there's 2. There's this 1 (the original being Simon and Garfunkel), and Johnny Cash Hurt, the original being nine inch nails.
So every one that listens to Disturbed, know that We Were Waiting and was not disappointed. If you like his voice, listen to Down with the Sickness and Stupify.
Great remake, at a perfect time in history. "Neon gods they made" may as well be a metaphor for smart phones that we use to "listen without hearing", to "talk without speaking", etc. Maybe instead of using social media, instead we should learn to play the banjo or something more constructive that we can share.
I love this remake as much as I loved the original. Disturbed really did this song justice, and brought a deeper layer of gravitas to it.It was a song we really needed when Simon and Garfunkel released it, and it is a song that we still need today.
Remember that John Lennon 'Twist and shout' was the final song he would sing, because it took its toll on his vocal cords but that was then and this is now
People listening to Disturbeds version of Sound Of Silence: Wow, he sings great, they seem like a mellow band.
Disturbed: OOOHH AH AH AH AH!
Facts 😂
LOL.....real mellow....OH WA AH AH AH ......lolol........
what are you....DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS?
OCH OCH

Instead of "sileeeeeeeence" he says "Silennnnnnnnce" It allows for that low tone and vibrato to be held together like that. It's actually something that's often considered to be "incorrect" by vocal coaches, but it works for him in this song.
Military Music! Our soldiers go thru so much.
Cuz he was trained classically and he's talented !
one of my fav remakes. When the original songwriter likes it you did good
David (the singer) is actually a trained opera singer. Which, is why he can hold that low note. He knows how to...
I have extremely eclectic taste in music and I love seeing others appreciate that too!❤
I was so excited to see you were reacting to this one!!!
I have always absolutely loved this version of this song 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 so glad you watched it!!
Great reaction! David is actually classically trained as a cantor, someone who sings in synagogue. I love this version, and the video just tops the cake! I would suggest you watch the Conan O'Brian live version of this. David's voice is beautiful, with just a full orchestra behind him.
For some time i was mostly listening to rock and metal and Disturbed was one of my go to picks
Disturbed is a heavy metal band ...the lead singer ..is David Drainman
I can't ever get enough of this beautiful song! Thanks for reacting to this bro.
HE KILLED IT!!!
I've sung this song many times for karaoke. Those low notes are easy to hit with a relaxed air flow. The high notes require a compressed cavity with a ton of air behind them.
I love his voice♥️♥️♥️♥️... Was the best remake of a song♥️♥️♥️♥️
Mark if a good musician is to be a story teller and David Dorman made you feel this song.
Love the way he does this song
Listen to him sing it live on conan. He was sick it too.. amazing
Check out the live performance of this song on Conan O'Brian. It was flawless, even though David had the flu that day. It's truly impressive. Such a great vocalist!
I love this version of the song and video, but you should hear it live. His voice and control and range is amazing
this version always gives me chills.. but i still like the original of simon and garfunkel... just a different way :)
Softer than the original, more powerful than most. Keep it up. This moves all, the difference of people dosn't matter.
Yes please listen to “down with the sickness”
By disturbed. It’s I little bit more heavy😂
Thanks for the great reaction Van
A little bit? Lol.
There are very few songs that are not only better than the original, but also bring emotion that can bring a person to tears. For me there's 2. There's this 1 (the original being Simon and Garfunkel), and Johnny Cash Hurt, the original being nine inch nails.
The S&G version is like a summer storm. The Disturbed version is a hurricane 🔥Both are masterpieces but very different vibes. Love your channel Van ❤️
The Neon gods is a reference to Hollywood.
Listen to the version from Conans Show. Simon and Garfunkel approved right here.
In my opinion the live version is even better.
Been a part of the LFR family for about a year. I heard that David is classically trained, such a great vocal range.
I love this remake as much as I loved the original. Disturbed really did this song justice, and brought a deeper layer of gravitas to it.It was a song we really needed when Simon and Garfunkel released it, and it is a song that we still need today.
Shinedown's simple man is probably my favorite cover... But this is number 2
Remember that John Lennon 'Twist and shout' was the final song he would sing, because it took its toll on his vocal cords but that was then and this is now
You have to remember that David Draiman is a classically trained opera singer
