  • Roughly $125.00 invested making knock off DIY Caltrac bars.
    2x RH 3/4 3/4 Heim joint w/ jam nut
    2x LH 3/4 3/4 Heim joint w/ jam nut
    1” OD 3/4” ID. Big HP look for .120” wall thickness. My bars are .097” wall.
    Grade 8 3/4 bolts and washers
    3/16” steel plate to cut the brackets from.

      TPV Productions So far only driving to get gas it’s hard to say for sure but it seems to be tighter. It’s hard to explain, but just part throttle take offs the rear end seems more stable. I chose to preload the passenger side + 1/2 turn more to help level the body on launch. I remembered on my old leaf spring cars with old slapper bars needed to be set this way. I agree, can’t wait to see how they work! JD

    Iv herd you should have them pointing up as high as possible. I'm just switching from a slapper to home made caltrac myself.

      Bar angle depends on the vehicle, tires and track surface. Generally you want the bars parallel to the ground sitting at ride height. If you have the bars up in the front it will hit the tire harder but sometimes this causes wheel spin. JD

    Did you put a slider mount on the rear ? Or are you using a stock shackle leaf spring mount ? Good looking work .

      We used this website as our guide to these style bars. Notice the front brackets only have one adjustment hole. We added the rear brackets to the factory lower leaf spring mount.

      Yes I have Speedway rear leaf spring sliders. Be aware the Camaro spring eyes are 1.625” and the S10 uses 1.500” so you’ll need to machine the solid bushing to fit.

    How did these work out? I see these were on an 8.8? I've got an 8.8 I've been building under my econoline... has a truss and I bought Lakewood truck traction bars but in hindsight they seem kind of clunky and I heard they make noise. I'm just wondering if the front bracket has to absolutely be in geometry with the front hanger? I feel like I've seen all kinds of setups even ones that are canted.. This isn't like a serious race truck but just looking to prevent axle wrap in a more complete manner than clunky bars. I see hellwig makes a traction helper spring that bolts to the top of the leaf but I'm not sure if it's a true benefit for higher power or if it messes with the spring too much.

      So far so good the bars are working great! If I ever make 1000+ HP I might step up the wall thickness on the bars.
      Most tuners want the bar parallel to the ground, so keep this in mind when making your brackets. Also, the front brackets need to easily rotate on the bushing sleeve with the spring bolt torque to 40-45 ftlb. JD

    Looks Like a nice setup, Did you use the stock front Spring Bushings? if so did you have to modify them to fit the 3/16" plates in there?

      MZ 500 I used the bushing in the front that came in the 3” lowering springs. The springs were a mistake for a Blazer, they aren’t strong enough to support the added weight in the rear.
      I think I could have honed my plates where they pivot on the ends of the bushing.
      All I have is a few street test hits but you can feel the rear end digging in! Way better traction and more stable. JD
      P.S. the width was fine because the plates locate over the ends of the bushing.

      @@HeadFlowInc I am looking at making a set for my 71 Torino project I have new bushings for the springs but the rubber sticks past the ends I think if I trim the rubber back I should have room the the plates. Thanks for the info!

    The rod reduces down to accept the heim, is that an ID threaded tube welded to the larger tube?

      luis _obs This video is intended to help others create their own traction bars. Each applications are specific in terms of length, mounting designs and tube diameter. The weight of the vehicle and power/torque can require thicker tube on the bars.
      I’m unable to build sets for sale but I hope you’ll be able to find someone who with this video can do the job at a reasonable price. Thanks for the feedback!!! JD

      MAG I had to do a lot of research in order to make a set of bars on an S10 chassis. I don’t have any information for the brackets or lengths for other makes and models.
      Also, if you’re building a Huge HP monster the tubes will need to be 1 1/4” diameter with a .120” wall diameter. These bars have a 1” OD JD

    Can you share the dimensions you used on the under both brackets? How tall did you make the under axle brackets to the centerline of the hole and did you center the hole under the rear axle centerline? Thanks.

      We used an online template we found, I’m not sure it’s still available.
      The rear brackets were welded to the factory lower plate centered forward/back & side to side. Good question on the vertical alignment between the bolt hole and axle center line… 🤔
      The template we used had two front holes for adjustment, but on the S10/Typhoon using the top hole put the bars parallel to the ground. The front brackets hung down and would get caught trying to load/unload the car trailer so I cut my brackets shorter eliminating the lower hole. Calvert sells a lowered vehicle set of bars with the single front hole/brackets.
      As for the bar length I’d have to measure them. JD

      The bars stiffen the rear suspension a lot and eliminated my wheel hop. I’m still tuning on the rear springs etc to lower my 60’ times, but honestly I only have a few wot test hits because my friend lost his Dragy! I need a Dragy to test! JD

      terry bumgarner There’s a spherical end on each end centered with spacers in the brackets. I hope this explains how it’s able to pivot front and rear. JD

      Oops sorry, I’m running the factory bushing in the front spring eye, some people use a solid aluminum bushing. In the back spring eye it has the solid aluminum bushing in conjunction with the leaf spring slider setup. There’s a video on my channel about the rear slider box assembly. JD

      2x. 3/4” x 3/4” -16 Right Hand thread
      2x 3/4” x 3/4” -16 Left Hand thread .
      1x Bar with threaded 3/4” ends.

      🤣🤣🤣 too funny, to each their own. They’ve worked great so far, if/when I make enough power to bend them all I have to do is upgrade the horizontal bar to a larger/thicker diameter. Countless people have made Cal-clone bars or knock offs of Assassin bars etc. Thanks for watching and the feedback! JD
