    Don't sell yourself short, man.
    Some of us engineers recognize when there's people that just simply know more than we do about their chosen field of expertise.
    I've designed freeze dryers. That doesn't make me an expert in LS engine tuning.
    So, before I go wasting money blowing something up from sheer arrogance I come and watch vids from guys like you.

    With the "Tuner" programs out there, I prefer to stick with a "Matched Set" of components. As The DriveWay Engineering points out, having a matched TAC, DBW pedal and ECM is one of the best routes to go. GM spend millions of dollars for engineering a solid product that is capable of under-hood heat and vibration. If placed inside in your swap is even better. Too many post on vehicle forums have guys who got into many issue with mix and match and having to stat over. The OEM parts are everywhere, from the bone yard to RockAuto. If you are new to this level of working on vehicles, do your research, make a plan, think ahead on what you want. Learn how to solder, shrink tube your splices, properly remove terminals and install. Draw out the wiring diagram to figure out placement of modules for ease of access. Determine the length of harness and follow proper fuse protection, including the use of relays. Make it clear to your tuner, like JR, for donor vehicle, VIN, tranny, gear ratio, tires size, cooling fans, cruise control of no cruise. All of these things will reduce you headaches and create an enjoyable experience with the satisfaction of doing it your self. As a retired ASE Master, I have seen too many people do what they thought was right and pop fuses, open circuits and have no digital volt, ohms meter, nor who to do voltage drop. JR is providing a basic service in his explanation of what is out there and how bad it will hurt you wallet. Plus knowing what works, begins with research, as in his video. Plan it out, get a 3 ring note book and plastic page protectors and draw out you ideas. Create a wiring diagram and notes + photos of the modules & parts being used for future reference. It is creating your own service manual for the "One-Off" that you are building. A blind hog finds the corn once & awhile, but don't be that guy. It take the fun out of it!
    Nice information The Driveway Engineer. Good job from an ASE Master Tech (Imports / GM)

      Thanks so much!
      Man, I could go into so much more detail, but trying to strike a balance between getting the important stuff out there and keeping it short you know?
      Since I'm gearing the videos towards beginners and people who are unsure and overwhelmed, that's the reason I just say get everything and use it as is. As you've seen and pointed out, trying to mix and match is likely to cause some problems and cost some money.

      @@TheDrivewayEngineer As an instructor for ACDelco for 7+ years, I held 30 different tech seminars for 4 hrs. for up to 100 techs, like "Advanced Charging Systems", but also held 2 day "Stand-up" classes at 13 tech colleges. Out of the 28 classes, 6 of them where focused on electrical. With EL-2, my focus was to make a service tech become comfortable with a DMM, how to use it, and voltage drop. We had bench-top table modules allowed us to build a series circuit complete from scratch. It was amazing how many techs, who worked on vehicles everyday, could not build a circuit without popping the fuse when turned on. They maybe very good at fixing an existing circuit in any given vehicle, but from scratch...Well I kept a bucket of fuses handy. Lap Scope was another thing. I told them they had lap scopes in their shops for years...it was the "Sun" engine analyzer that had a primary (Low voltage) input and the high voltage used for the ignition systems secondary. Using it or with an amp clamp, you could "See" the activity in the circuit, like a defective DC motor. Very scary, but some techs learned a lot. If I got to one, two or more...I had a good class. Learning is good!

      All ls swaps run far better with a carb with electronic meter blocks. Install a wide band o2 sensor and your done. You can adjust in car while driving.
      Install a distributor( need a front mount timing cover and ford distributor.and your done. This set up is for intelligent people not idiots! This set up always beats computer set up on dymo due to rule cooling intake. If you can understand this stop reading! Your brain is a much better computer and cost nothing.
      Convert4l80e to manual drive and your done. Better is a 400 turbo with a gear vendors overdrive so you can split gears. If a large cooler is used and trans is machined for extra clutches(red altos and modified kolene steels) it will last forever no matter how it is abused! We have this setup in 3500hd with 800,00 miles so far. The LS is all after market with dart 6 bolt headsc4.130 b0re and 4.125 stroke. Extensively modified cathedral heads( not stock) with big valves and reshaped chambers. Custom ground cam and almost 12 to 1 compression. It runs on 87 octane and gets22 miles to gallon without 12,000 lb trailer. We run 3.42 gears and cruise is 1300 RPM at 80mph. Beats most diesels with far less matinence.
      We build about 40 of these a year in New chevy chassis (all4x4s) and factory motor and trans pays for new power train (almost). The dash is ripped out and manual gauges are installed( computer gauges are terribly in accurate and add wide band o2 sensor and vacumn gauge an fuel pressure gauge as well as other gauges. The 14 bolt free floater has real detroit locker and front diff has an e locker. We get 40,000 for conversion and you have a bullet proof truck with just routine maintenance. We build 75 gallon gas tanks, and usually dry sump oil systems and custom cast iron exhaust manifolds into a 5 in single pipe..
      Suspension is mildly modified and .375 plate bumpers the front and rear 18,000 lb whinches are used. All computers are gone and anyone can fix it. This is how a real truck should be built, not the trash coming out of detroit!!!
      Relative to the climate the truck is shipped to many other mods are made.
      You can do the engine and trans combo many different ways but leave computers out!! They don't belong in real trucks!!

    Looking for info on putting an LS in my T-bucket for Goodguys autocross, this has been a good resource. From what I'm finding out any healthy 5.3 will be more than enough to spin the tires through first gear, anywhere in first gear up to torque peak. Talking 1800 pound car with 9 inch 200 treadwear tires. So this series has been a major time and money saver for me.

      PSI has good customer service and people who use them like them.
      I believe they are importing from China and they don't have much flexibility when I see people ask them for custom stuff, it's basically a one size fits all kind of harness.
      I personally like reworked stock harnesses, you can get them from people like Andy Bryant at LSX Specialties, John Kawaski at Johns Custom wiring, and Jason Richard on Facebook. They'll make them anyway you want, longer to hide the ecu in the cab, flip from side to side, whatever. Usually at a lower price than an all new harness from BP Automotive.

    • @TheDrivewayEngineer
      @TheDrivewayEngineer  5 років тому

      I do not have a DOD video, as I do not have any Gen IV engines in the fleet.
      Cost and simplicity are the reasons for that. DOD can be taken care of with a cam and lifter swap, but the higher cost of the engines, along with all the extra DOD crap is why I avoid them
      A Gen III 5.3 is 500 or less loaded into your truck, Gen IV stuff is so expensive you may as well skip to Gen V.
      And once you add a cam and headers, the difference is negligible.

    • @TheDrivewayEngineer
      @TheDrivewayEngineer  5 років тому

      You still have the red/blue P01 PCM, running a 5.3 is just a matter of programming it correctly.
      I'm not super sure what parts of the harness will be different, but probably not much. The coil packs come to mind though, and injectors.
      As far as the transmission, it will bolt up with 4 or 5 bolts, the pattern is different, but some still match, you'll need a spacer just like the one they use to put a TH350 behind an LS. Or you can just swap in a LS 4L60E and it'll fit and work fine.
