Catch and Cook! IKE JIME **WIRE THROUGH SPINAL CORD** Why???
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- David invited me to do some rock fishing from shore. Couldn't pass up the chance! The plan today was to catch two fish. One we would not bleed or gut at all, and the other we would preform a Japanese method of cleaning the fish called Ike Jime. You destroy the spinal cord by inserting a small wire through the spinal cord. This breaks down the nerves and stops chemicals from being released into the meat of the fish.

rest in peace dad.
rip, at least you have good memories with him
😭 what happened rip
I have done a lot of fishing, and diving in Central America, Mexico, Viet Nam, Taiwan, and Thailand. Now, I have L3 heart failure due to a congenital condition. I do live vicariously through you. It is a comfort. Thank you.
“Did I tell you how I got groped by a seal one time?”
Lol David is classic
David seems like a cool dude to fish with! Great sense of humor.
Dude for your own safety I seriously recommend wearing a self deploying life jacket while rock fishing, they can be the difference between life and death. Plus I find they are so light weight you don’t notice them. It’s a valuable investment that might just save your life...
Yeah they actually were really close the edge.
Sans I know all it would take would be a slip or an unexpected fish or a large wave.
This was actually hard to watch. I was nervous the whole time even though I know we would not be seeing it if something had happened.
I live in a place with really big waves and cliffs, most people think that if they are carefull stepping they are fine. But it just takes one rogue wave to drag you down.
He has to hold cameras and fishing rods he should really be more safe. Last time I was concerned for his safety I was told to 'stop being a pussy' and its 'none of my business'
I spend a great deal of time in and around fishing villages in Japan every year. This technique was taught to me by my father in-law about 20 years ago. Great to see others in the US are discovering it as it really does improve the texture of the fish when eaten. Unfortunately, you're not really doing it correctly. First of all... use a stiffer wire. Do this process immediately after pulling the fish from the water. It's OK to club the fish in the head if it's large enough to be uncontrollable while fully conscious. There are several different techniques. None of them require cutting off the head to run the wire down the spine. Most fisherman and fish processors in Japan will first spike the brain. Each fish species has a different entry point.... so, it takes a bit of experience to get that part down. They then either run the wire through the hole in the head created by the spike and along the spinal column, or they make a cut in the tail and run the wire the other direction.
Sorry if I came across as a know-it-all jerk yesterday. Didn't really mean to sound like that. Been watching your videos since you started posting on UA-cam. Really great to see a local guy get as much recognition as you're getting. Hope to see you out there one day. Cheers.
Yea..most fishermen sticking a wire in a fishes brain ..don't know where their tiny brain is and run wire along outside of spinal column thinking their doing it right but fish suffers. Little taste difference for making fish suffer from amateur surgeons.
@@jackiefitzpatrick2906 Very true, it does take a lot of practice. And, knowledge of fish anatomy. Different types of fish require slightly different technique.
Kanpai from Sendai :) much love
Haha this is awkward, both of us wearing no pants. Man put your pants on and get the butter.
Ree Pete dude... you don’t need pants to add butter...😂😂
The reason why I love this dude is he’s the equivalent to Mr.Rodgers\ Steve from blues clues of fishing! Love your videos man and if you ever respond and near my area I’d love to fish with you!!! Be safe brother!
Rest in peace to the brother that lost his life on those rocks.
I havent been sea fishing in maybe 25 years, but when your friend got his first bite, I could almost feel the jolt in my arms at the same time. It was a really strange sensation
The best channel when you’re having insomnia
FAXXXXXXXXXX
Nathan K yessirrr
Just got the 2nd shot, this vid is helpin me cope, im freazing and shaking ugh
Istg
Gn 😭
Love that you let the first small keeper go....good fish management! Thanks for being a great fisherman not just a good catcher!
Matts the Ike Jime technique does make a significant difference if it is done immediately rather than many minutes after the fish is landed. You are correct that it likely does not make a difference when used on small rockfish. I have done it on albacore and I was impressed with the results. I hope you try it again and compare fish of the same species to make the test more informative. Salmon fishing has been very good the past two weeks. I never heard back from you about being a guest on my 25 ft Skipjack FISHTALES for a salmon trip on the Marin coast. I understand you probably get many invitations and only have limited time. Be careful descending those rocky cliffs. We need to keep you around. Nice to see you added some butter to the bacon grease. Cabezone is my favorite ground fish.
I know a lot of people are advising him to take more safety precautions, however, i like this.. just with any thing safety is always a concern, however it's the adventure that really gets me "hooked". Nice vid man so exciting!
Hey Matt ... so nice to see u out fishing and posting again ... we missed watching your vids :) !!! People do nice things for you Matt ... because you're a good guy :):):) !!! Wishing u the best always . Eddie n Jill.
You ,Fisherman's life , are something to be proud of ...your channel seems to have no bullshit politics attached to it ... i praise you my FISHERMAN BROTHER ! good Luck !
No way!! I just learned about ike jime as well!! I learned it from my Japanese friend who is in the industry. This is what they do to the fish in Japan when they are going to prepare it for sashimi! First UA-cam video I’ve seen w/ Ike jime! Awesome, great work Matts!
Slay and Fillet Fishing i have a video of ikijime on my channel but its different to this
Slay and Fillet Fishing Ike Jimi is actually a method of stabbing the fish in the brain so it dies instantly this reduces the lactic acid in the fish caused by the fish flopping around this would make it sour. another term "stoned" becuase the fish shakes and then just becones paralyzed. Spearfisherman use this technique when shooting fish. It will paralyze the fish almost instantly.
Kiwi Guy yeah this is the version i have on my channel
Obviously skilled and have all the patience needed for fishing. Awesome videos sir.
Hey, just some advice, you need to remove rhe protective film from that okuma fishing rod. If you dont, over time moisture will get trapped inside and it can rot the cork handle.
NTB Fishing true advice, i had a nice rod like that once (caught all my personal bests) but never took off the fi like and idiot and it just went to crap i was so mad and upset because my dad handed it down to me after getting a better one for christmas
Ike Jime is miraculous. I didn't believe it until I tried it on a fish that I served my family after it had been aging three weeks! It smelled like fresh day boat scallops and was the best black sea bass I've ever tasted. Crazy!
Matt: "Im going out with the man david"
Me yells: "yes! david is coming!!!"
My mom from the other room: "whos david and how long will he stay ?"
Me: starts laughing 😂
Love that guys excitement. Makes me smile every time
Landon Cazper Every fish he sees is the most beautiful thing to him.
The Man David !
You know why people are doing that I think because you stay humble and you have genuine person and they see it...GREAT VIDEO
rigor mortis works at the level of the individual muscle cells, myosin contracting and won't release the contracted state due to no new ATP generation. it eventually wears off over hours. decimating the spinal cord doesn't affect this, but what it could do is destroy reflexes (which don't involve the brain, only spinal cord). if the reflex loop between muscle and spinal cord is severed, you might get a more "loose" feeling muscle, which may account for what you're experiencing.
I never been a fan of avocado but your videos made me go back and give them another try...
Im in heaven.. what have i been missing for 30years lol
Favorite fishing channel!
lobster fart me toi
Its gotta be Matts...he is just a super easy going likable guy. I used to watch all the shows back in day, Jimmy Houston, Roland Martin, Bill Dance...etc, this is way more down to earth and real. Its like reality show fishing with a cool dude as the star.
Fisherman never die they live on vicariously through the last fish they caught and released
Great video as always, clicked as soon as i saw the notification!
Man David is so relatable here 😂 from losing that monster in the rocks to launching the 4 ouncer without opening the bail, oh brother does it hit close to home fishing on the rocks I do this all the time
dude you let me relive my rock fishing days in the same stomping grounds!
once caught surfperch at Baker Bch..i foolishly threw them in a tidepool to keep them fresh, had to re-catch them by hand. Nothing to cook with but driftwood.. their was a vein of clay in the cliff so i balled each whole gutted unscaled fish in a ball of clay and baked it hard in the fire, then broke them open..the skin stuck and kept the meat clean, basically steamed.. imagine their gut cavities salted and packed with onions, lemon and BUTTER.
Also: live-birth surfperch young can be squeezed out and cooked whole as is, no need to gut.
Good demonstration of Ike jime! Smaller younger fish tends to have better texture flavor than bigger older fish.
You should wear an auto inflate life vest. I always wear one on my boat.
This was such a cool video. The length was not even a factor. What a great day fishing. Dave seems like a cool bud to go fishing with. Lets gooooo!
wayouttatune2
Hahahah and so is girth i suppose!
the taste change happens at around 3-4 days, normal fish starts to rot and decay, but Ike Jime fish ages more like beef. Though the main benefit is from the first step in the process of brain spiking the fish to kill it very quickly and humanely.
My fav videos are always ones with you and David!
Zpacks is some legit stuff man, really high end backpacking gear. That probably is about $400 sleeping bag.
Holy shieeet! My jaw dropped when he said zpack. "I dont even know if theyre still in business" he said...😒😒😒
kangsterizer, I assume he just hasn't kept up with any of their products or really looked as to how they were doing after he made his purchase.
Michael M $400 thank you but NO thank you. It's camping gear which is NOT worth it cause it will be used here and there and will get torn, ripped and even lost
Pit Dawg not everyone just camps once or twice during the summer. If you fish, hunt, or backpack a lightweight sleeping bag that will keep you warm at high altitudes is worth it’s weight in gold. If you’re just doing lowland camping in a warm climate then yeah, completely unnecessary
Zpack is like Gucci but for camping gear💀😂😂
Bro, I honestly look forward to your videos; everyday I check the channel. Down to earth and fisherman... Tight lines brother!
33 min video? Hell yeah!!!! Even better!!! 😍😘
I have the same Dave story!. Ab diving in the 80's near Timber Cove. Pulled an ab and turned my head only top be face to face with a seal at 20 ft down. Dropped the ab and kicked up. It hung around for a while, but we just ignored it after that. Got our 4 abs. No tags needed...
Who else thinks he should do a catch and cook on every vid
Hipolito Rivas#5 While it is his most popular series, he should do what he enjoys. And its dangerous to cook on rocks like those.
No :( i want them to be something special.
Nah, I’d rather he have fun with new experiences than just cater to the audience
friedwyce the audience is what makes him money and famous so he should cater to us
Hipolito Rivas#5 not every video
Loved the video. Glad you had a great time with David.
Have u tried ice fishing? Would love to see a vid of you doing ice fishing
I just made fish in the exact way you did in the video. VERY good no seasonings and just fresh ingredients. Thanks so much for the great idea. Bacon and fish who knew that it could work?
You, ace videos, and deer meat for dinner need to get together!!!
kingsfan1022 definitely
AGREE!! 3 of my fav channels in colab??? That would be EPIC!
What hell no not ace he's doesn't really even know what hes doing half the time
Ikr
@@waynesingleton5322 if he can catch a fish and cook it successfully, then he does know what he's doing
Love the longer videos and by far the best catch and cooks on UA-cam
You should have David join you more often! You're serious, he's funny = good combo.
More Videos with David! He's hilarious and adds a great atmosphere to the videos! Keep it up Brother!
Lookin hungover 😂
Its Cali ;) Cannabis is awesome in northern Cali!
Love this channel, been binge watching for the past 4 days, when this quarantine is over I beleive I'll be able to catch a few :)
That other dude looks like" deer meat for dinner"Robert lol
exactly !!
I would like to see a collaboration
David Shamiri I think they both went fishing on the ocean in one of Roberts video
That's what I was saying
The exact comment i was looking for..
The panic from both you guys when the second cab started floppin 😂😂😂 "whoaahhh"
Me: I caught a 20 inch fish!
Friend: Its almost as big as mine but mines bigger!
That one friend who always try to One up u with his storys! ^_^
Chasing Fish Gotta have atleast one
Great video and both those fish looks great. You have a good heart and people can truly tell that about you.
That seal may had save your life dude, maybe he was trying to tell ya that there was danger in the water. 🦈
I think this is the first time in my life I've watched a 30 min video. Only fisherman's life can do that
Bro you should come down to San Diego and try to do a yellowtail catch and cook
Best vids on UA-cam hands down
Thanks for sharing! Looks like that cabbie never got told by his parents to chew his food properly!
To bleed or not.. I caught two 15 in blacks two weeks ago from the kayak. Bled one guy, the other one went in the cooler whole, I didn't even have time to kill it as fishing action picked up. I just gutted both of them 2 hours later on shore and cooked them up at home. Could not taste or see a difference.
A Ling I'll bleed but anything under 5 pounds or so perhaps not worthwhile.
One thing I still have to investigate next time I catch something- how does rockfish blood actually smell?
Nice work brother. Always thanks to David for giving you some great content. Keep up the good work!,
That cast at 11:40 😂😂
Nicholas Athorp he got intimated by Matt’s size, I mean catch.
bro i watched so many of your videos in the past couple days and i genuinely believe you should have more subs, high quality videos, great shots, great audio... i dont even fish or cook for that matter but watching your videos just make me want to go fishing and become chef gordon
You need to sell a shirt with yourself reeling in a fish that says "Hell Yeah"
David is great ,, we need more Davids
I should be asleep right now but.... here I am... lol
Kay Regnilloh 😂😂😂 I feel this in ma heart
Kay Regnilloh fishing videos>sleeping right? Because same
Kay Regnilloh I like you
Christoper Sivilay awesome
Enjoy you're night 🖒
I think the Iki jime technique makes a difference when dealing with fish being prepared for sushi. I’ve had sushi at the little shops around Tsukiji market in japan that have live fish brought in daily. I’ve seen them do this technique to mackerel (which is normally fishy) and it made a difference when eaten raw. Another great vid! Thanks
Wassup Matt. It's not uncommon for some fisherman, who fish on the rocks, to wear PFD in Asia. You might wanna consider it. Safety first brotha.
I was a little weary at the beginning of this vid but turned into another great catch n cook post. Much love from LA bro. Thanks for sharing
Who else heard Ace Video’s reference to Fisherman’s Life in his Walmart Catch and Cook video?
Andre Bannis I didn’t 😮
Ace Videos woah wut hey wazzup
LOL ACE IS HERE
Lmaoo it's lit
Mate you are such a nice guy with it a fantastic fisherman, love your vids its midday and I'm still in my jams dude
Do you ever eat the cheeks on Cabezon?? It seems like they'd have some great cheek meat!!! Maybe even through the collar too, do a cabezon cheek/collar catch n cook!
Matt My brother im a fellow Fisher man and i tryed your fish avocado and butter ive been meaning to try for a while and it was amazing will be eating it again keep up the good work good luck and Godspeed
"I'm going to let him live"
*throws him off a cliff* lol
I picked up an Okuma SST trout/salmon/steel head travel rod from Outdoor Pro Shop when you hosted your event, excellent rod.
What you so focused on at 31:20 bro? 😂😆
He looks like he saw a thicc chick lmao
Jrod The God in the ocean?
Congrats on the million subscribers bro, been watching your videos for a long time👍🏽
So in an ace videos upload he doing a Walmart catch and cook for crawfish and he’s getting butter, they came in packs of four, then he says “ for 3 bucks that’s a lot of butter for a lot of catch and cooks, unless your fisherman’s life.”😂😂😂😂👍👍
Adam Johnston I watch ace video's to
Yes I watch his vids too
Kinda sad most of his catch and cooks are trouts
You should hit up the Columbia George sometime and fish for some monster Sturgeon. I was fishing with a family friend (fishing veteran) who has pulled up 800 pound sturgeon before and we just happened to hook a monster! It was so huge that we tried reeling it in for 4 hour with 4 full grown men trying to bring it up but we could only get it about 30 feet from the river bottom before it would swim back down and eventually had to snap the line. Our friend said that was by far the biggest fish he's ever hooked and we happened to be lucky enough to be with him that day. If your're looking for some beast I suggest getting a boat and going out there! Sturgeon is a delicious. Best of luck to you and your fishing journey love the show!
I love David haha he's got a lot of energy
David should get a youtube channel.. he has a great personality plus we love him..
Avacodo and butter baby!!
Dude your buddy that was with you is freaking hilarious y’all should collab more. Another great video bro thanks for sharing!
12:35 would be bad if the fish landed on a huge rock
You should do catch and cook snakehead fish. I 'd discovered your channel last week and haven't stop watching ever since.
did you keep the shell?
Love the videos with David! I really look forward to the next one.
I'm not wearing pants either 👍🏻
pants are over rated anyways
Clothes in general are restricting
bryzzobrist i never where panys brother
I'm wearing shorts
lol
I thoroughly enjoyed this video. You should feature David more in your videos
"We will let him live"
**Tosses fish in the water from a cliff**
**Dies on impact** :P
Facts
🤣😂
They would need a lot more mass to die when hitting the water from that distance. Double it and that would probably be enough to kill a fish that size
Absolutely awesome, totally wicked seeing the fish shake as you pushed the wire down its spine. Keep it up bro!
That's the central nervous system reacting to being severed and not the fish being alive. Late reply I know lol
*Fishermans life when he catches a 15 inch cabezon* ehh this is too small to keep
*Fishermans life when he catches a 6in rockfish* LETS KEEP EM
Rockfish dont have a size limit, and try it yourzelf, the smaller fish taste better/have less parasites and toxins accumulated
A lil tip for when a fish goes in between rocks is to open the bail to let some line go and wait a little bit before you start to reel again. It usually works for me you should try it out. 👍🏽
Nice bro
8:30 for that reason it is often recommended to wear personal flotation device when fishing on rocks.
Happy 4th of July
Yo Matt, you're looking really good in this vid man. It looks like you've had some transforming learning experiences recently or something, or in the middle of one. Seem full of thought, awareness, and introspection. Great vid as always brotha
How does that cab poop out that abalone shell?! O_O it breaks down the whole shell?! Diyamn...
I can only imagine it regurgitates the shell after but I might be wrong
Zpacks is very high end quality ultra light backpacking gear, and business is booming!! You’re lucky to have that blanket man, it’s super expensive.
You don't strike me as the type of guy to go weedless
RhinoKincaid aye
keep sharing your fishing adventures, trips and tips
