The taking of an animals life is very hard as you get older. I used to run a trap line as well as hunt big game, upland birds and waterfowl. 11 years ago I realized how hard it is to dispatch a wounded animal. We were hunting ducks and geese in Kansas and I had to go retrieve a wounded Canada goose. It was a large bird and I walked up on it just laying there in the snow trying not to be seen but I was looking right at it's eye which was a little smaller than a dime. I could see the fear and it just made me think of my own mortality and I felt that to my soul. Respect is what we owe all living creatures. They not only provide us with a way to express our inner early beginnings as humans, they provide food and sustenance for ourselves and family. It's nice to hear the same feelings from other men that are hunter and fisherman. Bravo!
But thing is yall come from a land where you can walk to any grocery stores at any given time of the day and find all kinds of meat to satisfy you needs. Some of us don't, some of us have to be detached because we are primal for us is a life skill. Sure we respect the animal and always pray and thank for their sacrifice for us but that's really as far as it goes. I respect where you come from with your school of thought but it doesn't apply to all of us just like how my mentality doesn't apply to yours but we can mutually come to an understanding
Hi, as you get older, (I am 57) your own mortality makes you think about how precious life is and that’s what makes us more conscious of our actions in taking lives. In the scale of things that happen in the world it is minuscule. The fact you are conscious of it is testament to your humanity. Take care my friend ❤️
I have practiced Buddhism for many years, yet I endeavor to fish, crab, and clam. I also worked in nursing for nearly two decades, and have been with many during their last moments. Death is never an easy thing to swallow, nor should it be. Respect the life you are taking, never make light of it. Always be grateful for the sustenance that it provides you. And be thankful for it all. I am also always reminded by science- EVERYTHING survives on something else’s death, even plants. I am 61 years old and have been fishing since I could hold a pole. Take solace in knowing all life survives because something else has died and that YOU value the life you are taking and do it respectfully. I am a recent subscriber to your channel, but you seem to be a conscientious and respectful human being. 🙏🏾
I remember a 10 meditation course I did and I think some of my feelings have stemmed from that. I even did a video on the course about 4-5 years ago on this channel. Man time flies!
I really appreciate your videos. I'm trapped in a wheelchair after a stroke a few years back, your videos take me away and for awhile and I am with you as you cast out and catch and clean the fish. Thank you again. KIM
It made me feel more “normal” when you said that the older you get, the harder it is to kill the fish sometimes. I’ve loved fishing for years, but the last couple of years I’ve been more & more uncomfortable taking their lives, and sometimes even feel a bit squeamish doing catch & release- it feels like I’m tormenting an innocent creature for my own amusement. Never thought I’d feel this way… go figure! Thanks for sharing. I’ve loved seeing your channel grow, your trips diversify, and your video skills blossom over time- and congrats on inventing the new fishing method!!🤗🤗💐
It is very true, I've been fishing for more than 15 years and I can say it definitely does get harder and harder not to have emotion when taking a fish's life. I'm thankful for every fish I catch and it is important to respect the animal when it's providing you food. I'm an animal lover on top of it so i see where your coming from. I'm thankful for every fish I catch and the delicious meal it provides accompanied with a beautiful stick....no wait "just a little bit of butter" haha. Always exited when a new Fisherman's life video comes out! I've learned so much from you and you've inspired many youngsters and even people who want to start fishing and love the outdoors. Keep up the great content and always looking forward to seeing more!! Much love from Toronto, Canada.
A lot of fish have that black lining in the stomach, especially fish that feed in the sand or mud. It’s natural not pollution, even some deep sea offshore fish have it too.
A lot of ground fish in the atlantic have the black lining.. For instance, cod or pollock have no lining, but hake and cusk (also white fish) have massive linings.. Spent many hours in my younger years at a fish plant ripping off heads and cleaning out linings.. Hard on the fingers..
I have always held a healthy appreciation for the fish and wildlife I have kept over the years, but this past year I began to feel a little more sad when I would keep trout. They are such beautiful and fragile fish that represent some of the best freshwater resources in the world, and the older I get the more I realize how lucky I am to have access to good fisheries and wildlife areas. I really hope that we can preserve these for the future, that's why I always try to pick up as much garbage as I can when I go fishing, then it feels like I'm giving something back and not just taking for myself.
I have noticed that it IS harder and harder for me to take lives while hunting, fishing, foraging. I grew up on farms in CA, AZ and MI with all of these activities...even trapping for meat and pelts (which I will never personally do again). But, I'm just so much more uncomfortable with it now than I felt as a teenager or even in my 20s. It's like once I left the military at 21 years old, I just am more sensitive to animal harvesting. Needing to eat helps me through! ha ha Just a lot more picky at what I harvest and more thanks said. : )
I always give thanks to the fish after I dispatch them. Whether it be to the fish or something that is greater than me that blessed me with their body for nourishment and not to waste. Love your videos!! Keep up the great content!
I think it is normal to get a little "soft" as we age because we acquired a greater appreciation for life. Giving value to the animals we harvest beyond the aspect of being food and realizing that they are a larger part of our world and appreciating that everything has purpose. The fact that you acknowledge and embrace that feeling is wonderful. Stay safe and be well.
I feel ya man on keeping fish. There are days I go out to with the plan to fill the freezer but find myself not wanting to kill the fish. I end up just having fun fishing. As I have grown older and have researched a lot of the fish I target I have come to gain a greater respect for the fish and see it as a life and not just a fish. It is good to feel those things when harvesting fish or any animal. It reminds me and lets me know my heart and mind are in the right place. It is a respect for the animal and a gratitude for food that you get from the harvest. Thanks for sharing. To be honest it helped me feel more normal when I am with buddies and I decide not to keep any of the fish I catch for that day.
Great video! I am from Virginia and spent all of my youth fishing with my Dad, brother uncles, and friends at Cape Hatteras NC. Awesome surf fishing and man do I miss those times but life, kids, work and responsibilities have gotten in the way. These videos take me back, thank you!
Always great videos but I especially love it when you dig into the fishing theory that you're using really helpful for those of us who approach it from the wrong standpoint
The black lining in the stomach cavity is an adaptation to fluorescent bacteria in the gut of many fish. It helps them stay hidden from predators in dark environments.
Oh hell yeah , is that Daniel , and on the surf , good to see you 2 on the surf again. These episodes are the ones , what got me hooked on both your channels.... miss these surf episodes for real for real 🤝🏼
The older we get the more spiritual we become and we tend to appreciate, thankful and honor all the blessings we receive more. I'm not sure if it's the same case with fishing. It could also be that you got a better understanding about sustainability.
That black is like their blood line. Rainbows have the exact same thing. I always take my thumb and push it out. Also, I’ve commented this before, but I feel the same way the older I get about harvesting fish/animals. Don’t get me wrong, I still love hunting and fishing and have started taking my 2 sons. Stay safe and God Bless… Joe in MS
Hey, if you hold the fish tightly in one hand and hold the knife in your other palm you can insert the blade under the skin of the backbone, hold it there and grip the dorsal fin with your thumb and pull it out easier. Works pretty well. Enjoyed the video!
Awesome job Matts. I got skunked on my first surf perch trip of 2022. Probably due to the tides, went during high tide and stayed for 3 hours of the outgoing. The roll out grill is a must have too
matt........old school 'slap on ruler' on your left wrist ...save you the trouble of running back n forth to measure when you looking to catch smaller catch n cook fish 😉
If you're having a tuff bite and not getting hit resort to the mussels on the rocks, I might have mentioned this before but the perch love them. Good luck Brother !
I feel yah on the Killing Fish deal. I grew up on the Ocean, then started Trout Fishing here. I'm like that Trout was someone's Momma! I thought it was just me 👍. JO JO IN VT 💕😄☃
Swear to God I thought you stopped making videos cause you never pop up on my feeds anymore. I havnt fished in awhile due to life but somehow i feel like that won't be for long watching fishermans life!
Hey Matt!!...Thank you for your conservative appreciation for Nature. The same thing happened to me also...to the point that I stopped fishing. I can't stand the thought that I might be hurting the fish, so I stopped!!
KEEN . best shoes. Last 4 pairs of shoes I got. I was a diehard airwalk vans for a few decades. 90percent of every catagory is trash, music, shoes, airwalks, vans. but there were 1 or 2 styles each that were really great. thsoe got hard to find. so piss off. Keen is king now.
I hope you read your comments. You use a thin tape measure to measure your fish, so my suggestion is, why don't you epoxy about twelve inches to your rod just above the handle. That way you don't have to run all the way back to your tape and you don't have to keep the fish out the water to long.
You should do a whole video series of tutorials. For example a tutorial on everything you do to catch striped bass from the surf including all the gear and tips and rig that works the best. You should also do a video tutorial series specifically on catching bait, for example how to catch sand crabs and how to tell soft shell vs hard shell etc.. how to forage for pile worms at a jetty and how to store them. You would also be the perfect guy to do a quality tutorial on how to make a ghost shrimp pump and how to pump for ghost shrimp video. Maybe even an updated how to catch bait tutorial series for these new regulations if that earlier comment is legi.t

Comment on UA-cam videos. You must have walked for days to get cell service.
I might be trippin’ but you never know if we reincarnate endless of times, experiencing the universe as different species 🤔 🕉
The black membrane inside the stomache is called peritoneum. Its just a layer of skin inside of many species of fish. Its not pollution. 👍🏻

Oh,Puh-leez!! Grow a set, ya wuss!!!
Oh man. So you don't eat fish any longer?
Sustenance fishing is the only honorable fishing. No man should sell or give another man his meat is my motto
After my brother passed I started feeling that way
It’s survival.
This gives me them old school video vibes . Keep it up . I don’t mind the boat and other videos but these the ones .. hope family is doing well too

The older we get the more spiritual we become and we tend to appreciate, thankful and honor all the blessings we receive more. I'm not sure if it's the same case with fishing. It could also be that you got a better understanding about sustainability.

Swear to God I thought you stopped making videos cause you never pop up on my feeds anymore. I havnt fished in awhile due to life but somehow i feel like that won't be for long watching fishermans life!
Great vid.. The falling collars reminded me of old vids when you dumped the fish on the sand.. 😁✌️🇵🇭
I put paint marks on my pole @ 10.5" for quick measure and release.
Hey Matt!!...Thank you for your conservative appreciation for Nature. The same thing happened to me also...to the point that I stopped fishing. I can't stand the thought that I might be hurting the fish, so I stopped!!

When you remove the dorsal fin. Try starting at the tail end and remove/pull towards the head. Helps with regular perch.
Hey fishermans life thats always pretty cool nice video🔥👍🤗✌❤
So enjoy these Matt's. Wish I had a place to fish here in Tucson.
Many Blessings
Prayers for your mom.🙏🙏🙏
The ending was chill
Great session Matts. You need to add a line adjustment washer.. seems all the braid is on the top column of the Stradic reel spool
Definitely loving the content thanks I'm always wishing I was fishing 🎣
Those were some big red tails 🔥🔥🔥
Good luck on your next fishing trip 👍
Man that kinders has a garlic, herb with sea salt and lemon it's the bomb!
Pro tip with sand crab: Use a cut piece of rubber band on the hook after the bait, helps hold it on.
Ain’t nothing like fishing with a good friend. I’m Trying to get in as many sessions in as I can, my friend is moving to Illinois soon.
That’s what I’m talking about, getting back to those roots.
Imagine having your life. Must be great always out on adventures and fishing all over the place lmao
Much love Matt ! I really love watching your videos , Learned a lot from watching. Hope all is well! 👌
