The bands leader / singer / writer, Ronnie Van Zant was one of the fatalities in the 1977 plane crash that killed two other band members along with their tour manager and the pilots. Ronnie was a unique man. He never wore shoes while performing because he said he needed "to feel the stage." And he never committed his song lyrics to pen and paper (no computers then) only saying that "if I can't remember the words, they're not worth singing." He never saw 30, and even told his father that he never would, telling him that, "that's all the time I've got."
'I also think Freebird' live at Oakland California, 1977 is one of the greatest live rock era video versions ever recorded of any song. It is a must see! We are so blessed to have such stuff on tape. Cheers.
Another great song by Skynyrd is that smell. True story about Gary Rossington. Everyone called Gary Prince charming. And he did hit a oak tree with a brand new car.
Yes that stadium is about 20 minutes from my house. I was there with so many beautiful girls. OMG. WOW. Been to many concerts there and the Arena next door. So sad this band was tragically involved in a plane crash about 3 months after the aforementioned Oakland show. Lead singer Ronnie Van Zant died along with one of their three guitarists Stevie Gaines and his sister Cassie. Many injured. That was the end of the original band. I saw them also at Winterland in San Francisco 1976
The singer (Ronnie) is the one sitting in the center, rear row. The song was written after the death of the grandmother of the guitarist (Gary) sitting center front.
What a thoughtful reaction. And yes Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the most iconic bands in the history of Rock music. They tragically ended in the late seventies when they're crappy plane they were flying around in on their intense touring crashed and it killed several people and injured lots of others and it basically ended the band forever. Aversion with a brother and whatnot kind of formed later, and I saw them and it was good, but it's more or less a tribute band to the original band of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Ronnie Van Zant is the name of the lead singer and he wrote the majority of their lyrics. But they all collaborated a lot and all of those guys were so talented. They were just so good. They came out of Florida and named themselves after their High School gym teacher, lol. I know everybody's telling you to watch the live version of Freebird in Oakland or at the other place, either way both of them were getting closer and closer to the tragic plane crash, but I also know this stuff inside out and a hit and a massively huge fan favorite, and one that I think you would really enjoy just based on their actions I've seen, is there song called The Ballad Of Curtis Loew.
Left to right is Leon Wilkeson bass, Billy Powell piano, Ronnie Van Zant vocals, Gary Rossington (seated) guitar, Bob Burns drums, Allen Collins guitar, and Ed King guitar. This photo was taken in downtown Jonesboro, Georgia, in March 1973. Notice in the photo the bolt of lightning that appears behind Ed Kings head and the cars going by. I believe it was Gary Rossington whom received this advice from his mom or grandma. This album was their first release in August 1973 and you pronounced the name perfectly. Southern Rock is the genre. This is a classic. So much more to explore. Great Reaction and Thanks.
Great reaction. One of my most favorite songs. The lyrics alone are amazing, but I love the bass line. Probably one of the most beautifully done bass lines I've heard. You did a wonderful job pronouncing the name. Thanks for doing this one.
The band left to right in that picture if I can do it Leon Wilkeson. Bass Billy Powell. Keyboard Ronnie Van Zant. Lead Vocals Gary Rossington Guitar Bob Burns. Drums Allen Collins. Guitar Ed King. Guitar The song was written by Ronnie & Gary I think that all correct but it’s been awhile. 😂
Great reaction! A beautiful song with a message everyone should take to heart. Skynyrd is one of my favorite Southern Rock bands, along with Marshall Tucker and the Outlaws. BTW, you pronounced it perfectly.
"Freebird",the 77" live in Oakland California performance as well as "Gimme Back My Bullets" Fun Facts,LYNYRD SKYNYRD was named after a high school teacher by the name Leonard Skinner😅
Awesome song/reaction!! Lead singer Ronnie Van Zandt is the guy with his back on the brick,They sure knew how to make some good music.Try “Gimee 3 steps” & “Call me the breeze” these you should enjoy,Thanx4content 💯
I love how you get so excited talking about all the classic stuff. It was what I grew up on. Carry on Re. There is no love nor passion in a lot of modern music,it's sad.
The music I grew up listening too. Also Charlie Daniels, outlaws, Marshal Tucker, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, I still get sad seeing them, I can’t forget that tragic plane crash, it still makes me so sad, love your reactions.
Personally my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd song is "I Know a Little", followed by "Honky Tonk Night Time Man". Very sad about the 1977 airplane crash that had befell the band. Similar to that of Buddy Holly (1959), Jim Croce (1973), Stevie Ray Vaughan (1990), Patsy Cline (1963), Otis Redding (1967), Randy Rhoads (1982), John Denver (1997), and Glenn Miller (1944). Very talented musicians taken well before their time. OTOH, The Beatles flew around the world almost 3 times, and criss crossed the USA several times in 1960s era planes. Luck of the draw I guess.
The OG LS was 7 members 3 guitars bass drums piano lead singer. Considered Southern Rock. I great suggestions for other songs. Myself I say LS did not make a bad song, cant go wrong. Thank you for your reaction.
Ronnie was the greatest storyteller of them all. There are many great artists and bands from this era but you would be hard pressed to find better than Skynyrd. Enjoy your journey you have many miles to go but it won't disappoint...
Of course everyone is going to say Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama and yes they are great, but don't short yourself on Skynyrd. Tuesday's Gone, Gimme Three Steps, Saturday Night Special, What's Your Name, The Ballad Of Curtis Lowe and That Smell are all great songs as well. They have a long list of hits, but these will get you started
Lots of folks recommending the live version of Freebird. No doubt that video shows the total vibe of the era and the iconic nature of the band and the song. The audio however is less than great. I'll catch a lot of flack for saying this but if you're going to react to Freebird, and I certainly think any reactor should, the studio version is the way to go for the first listen.
You pronounced the band name quite well. I pronounce it the same was as you did but I have a different accent than you as I am from the North East US not fare from New York City. The album cover actually has the phonetic pronunciation under the band name. Also, the band had US Southern accents and the band was actually name after their high school gym teach Leonard Skinner if I am not mistaken.
🎼🎼🎼🎼🎻 .. okay Re .... I think it is fair to say that you have quickly become a true fan of Classic Rock , with its long list of legends. I could not be happier that you are part of this culture. I am very anxious for your journey into Tom Petty and also Electric Light Orchestra ( E.L.O. ) , there are many astounding songs in your future. 🎀
You need to listen to The Ballad of Curtis Loew. It’s a great song. Then for fun. Gimme Three Steps. Enjoying watching your people listen to what I did at your age.
Lynyrd skynyrd was there high school gym teacher who always gave them crap about their long hair and told them they would never amount to anything so the named their band after him as a f-u and changed I s to Y s in the spelling to not be sued
From Lynyrd Skynyrd, you could listen to every single song. Ronnie van Zant was propably the coolest frontman you ever could watch. He never wrote down a song, for him it was "either i remember or it isn´t worth it". Simple man is the rock song with the deepest and most meaningful lyrics of all time. Every MAN need to follow its message and could be a happy guy. Other songs who are a HAVE-to-Listen 1.) Free bird. The song with the longest guitar "solo" of all time, watch a LIVE-version, this is much better as their recorded version. 2.) Ballad of Curtis loew. The second best blues song for me. Only Ride On by AC/DC is better for me. 3.) That Smell 4.) T for Texas 5.) Saturday Night special All live - MUCH better then the Studio versions, even if these are already great. Oh compare Simple Man from Lynyrd Skynyrd with the live version of Shinedown, THIS version ua-cam.com/video/cKiXmBbVN8Y/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MikeNadi1 The only one who come near the original. But they were allowed to perform it, because the singer is married with the daughter of one of Lynyrd Skynyrds band members
I can tell you this ,if these fellas had Christian Mothers and being from the Southern USA,they all got told to be a simple sort of man in their needs. In the end that is all that matters.
The album cover has a pronunciation key on it! Which was a brilliant choice for their 1st album. This album is often called "Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd "
You are pronouncing it properly, and yes it is a band from the rock subgenre you seem to like: Blues Rock, Southern Rock, Rock-n-Soul. Funny enough, the album cover on your screen is from their first album which as you can see under their name is titled, "Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd." That's literally the name of the album. The lead singer's name was Ronnie Van Zant. He passed away in a plane crash in the late 70s. This band was huge in the early to mid 70s. They are from Jacksonville, Florida. Another band you might enjoy from this subgenre is The Black Crowes. Their song "Remedy" is one you should react to: it's a mix of rock and soul.
Great reaction! I know another song that you'll really enjoy. It could be their most underrated one. It's called "Comin' Home" (ua-cam.com/video/GYVr55Rgnlg/v-deo.html).

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird - 7/2/1977 - Oakland Coliseum Stadium (Official)
It just doesn't get much better than that.
Another great song by Skynyrd is that smell. True story about Gary Rossington. Everyone called Gary Prince charming. And he did hit a oak tree with a brand new car.
i live in Jacksonville, Fl...where Lynyrd Skynyrd started. They are our musical heroes. The plane crash that killed many of them was devastating.
I love this song! The simple truths that people forget today.
Doesn’t get more heartfelt than this. Great choice and reaction.
Check out Freebird live at Oakland California, 1977

eh, it's so cliched by now that it's laughable how Freebird is all 99% of people know of Skynyrd.
A song every young person should here and follow.
soothing, positive message, powerful, simple - (wo)man, you nailed it. Really liked this reaction.
We lost them too early, they would have gave us soo much more ,
The singer (Ronnie) is the one sitting in the center, rear row. The song was written after the death of the grandmother of the guitarist (Gary) sitting center front.
If you want to rock it out: "Call Me The Breeze".
I agree 💯 percent....the piano solo is incredible
YES!
Gimme three steps is a jaunty little ditty too!
I know a little.
Yes
I love the way that you listen so intensely to the song to try to digest the message.
God bless the Simple Man!

Dang, that was so garbled. Thanks autocorrect!

So amazingly beautiful, and so is this song. Loved your reaction.

Oh boy…another catalog
You Got That Right...Live version.....
The best of southern ROCK. May I suggest Stevie Ray Vaghan, song. Texas Flood. live at the El Macambo. He is the best Texas Blues Rock.

Ever heard of Roy Orbison? A popular singer from the 70's and 80's.
I suggest "Crying" or "Pretty Woman" from his black and white night conceert! ❤
If you ever play Freebird by Skynyrd, make sure it the live version from July 1977 in Oakland CA., it's better than the album version.
From Lynyrd Skynyrd, you could listen to every single song.

Saturday night special and give me back my bullets. For a harder version of them.
I'm a little biased. I'm from Jacksonville Florida. That is there home. Everything they play is good.
I can tell you this ,if these fellas had Christian Mothers and being from the Southern USA,they all got told to be a simple sort of man in their needs. In the end that is all that matters.
Free Bird
💯👍
Lynard Skynyrd what was the name of their high school principal

U said it rignt
The album cover has a pronunciation key on it!
