Diane if you want to hear that triple guitar attack live then you can't go wrong with their performance of Freebird at the Oakland Coliseum in 1977 and you watch fans that are your grandparents age rocking out to a great song
I slightly favor the London version, opening for the Stones. Partly because it was an audience that didn't know the band.. But took notice during Freebird. Because how could you not?
Freebird at the Oakland coliseum, one of the most celebrated live performances. The piano, the guitars, Ronnie's voice, the backup vocals, the crowd.... just an enjoyable ride!
I grew up in southern Appalachia in the 70s and 80s. Lynyrd Skynyrd was the soundtrack of my childhood. The Ballad of Curtis Loew is another amazingly emotional song.
I don't have a care when I have a fifth of wine either. On the day old Curtis died nobody came to pray Ol' preacher said some words and they chunked him in the clay Well he lived a lifetime playin' the black man's blues And on the day he lost his life that's all he had to lose
It is a crash that never in a million years should've happened. They were having engine problems leading up to it with the same plane, and some of the band members didn't want to take that flight until it was fixed. LOTS of controversy surrounding that whole crash and the aftermath. "Free Bird" Live in Oakland was filmed just a few months before the crash. An optimal, and popular, viewing of them playing Live if you want to see them. Amazing crowd and atmosphere!
They ran out if fuel As a lifelong professional pilot I cannot imagine doing that unless several other things go wrong. Primary among them, bad weather. In this case the weather was fine.
@@waynethera2712 No. Improper fuel load at takeoff. NO PILOT will even taxi with fuel leaking! Particularly aviation gasoline! And if you can't see it you will smell it. The aircraft was a POS. They could have and should have done better. As we say in aviation, Murphy's Laws are always running the show! Shit happens. RIP.😪
This is Southern Rock at its best. Absolutely my favorite band of all time. These guys, and gals, were truly themselves and the music reflects that. They were so versatile as with ballads like this and "Ballad of Curtis Lowe", but then turn around and rock both your socks and nickers off with songs like "Sweet Home Alabama", "Free Bird", "Saturday Night Special", and many others. For a live performance I highly suggest "Free Bird" at Oakland Coliseum in 1977 a few of months before the place crash. There's not enough room to give all the info on them, so please look into them.
It’s Just Rock! The Greatest Rock and Roll performances of all time! The Boys were from Jacksonville, Florida which is in the South. Outlaws were from Florida. Molly Hatchet were from Florida. All 3 were BRILLIANT bands. ROCK N ROLL BANDS.
Soundtracked my (and all my friends) childhood in San Francisco, California 1972-1977. Two of the Best recorded LS shows are MARCH 1976 (after Ed King quit) at Winterland in S.F. CA. And Oakland Coliseum 7/2/77. Also LS first huge show (Opening for the Who) was at COW PALACE in San Francisco, CA. Imagine that.
Lynyrd Skynyrd LOVED the San Francisco Bay Area. They were my favorite band of all time. Larkin Allen Collins was my favorite guitar player of all time.
That Smell, Gimme Three Steps, Sweet Home Alabama, Freebird, Ballad of Curtis Lowe, Tuesday's Gone, to me are all top tier. I love their other songs too, like They Call me the Breeze etc.
"That Smell" was inspired by Gary Rossington's dangerous life style. The "smell of death's around you" became ironic because Gary out lived them all, only recently passing away. RIP Gary!@@JohnMoore-xf5wy
I grew up in Southern Alabama, listening to several bands considered to be the “Southern Sound “ of the 1970’s. Lynyrd Skynyrd is still one of my favorite bands, throughout my life the songs of this band have always brought me back to my roots, to my home and to the music of my youth.
Yeah, I’ve definitely heard of. Sweet home, Alabama. Freebird, I don’t recognize the name of but maybe one for a future video. It’s funny that this is their most popular song because most people don’t seem to identify it as such.
I remember the crash well. You want to see one of their live performances you say? Then you will be blown away by, Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird - 7/2/1977 - Oakland Coliseum Stadium (Official). This has been considered one of the number one Rock songs in history. They performed in Oakland less than three months before the plane crash that killed the lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines backing vocalist, Cassie Gaines assistant road manager, and others. The piano player Billy Powell crawled out of the wreckage and heard crying and someone yelling to get him out of there and he went to help get them out. He said he saw the drummer Artimus Pyle crawling out of the wreckage with, "his ribbs sticking out of his chest." Powell had his whole face bashed in and his nose was hanging off the side of his face. ( I saw photo's of his face it was all bloody) He, along with the drummer Artimus Pyle and Road crew member Ken Peden went to look for help and showed up all bloody at a farm house and the residence of the house held them at gunpoint not knowing what was going on. I will leave the rest to you to google and learn about the plane crash and how they all knew it may crash since it had issues before the last flight. The flight before the last one of the engines caught fire and they all was worried about it's airworthiness. So, as you watch the live performance have in the back of your mind that some of the members died less than three months later and some was seriously injured. Other than that. You will be amazed at this video.
They crashed not too far from where I live. There in a memorial there now. It was all built by fundraising. If you ever come down to Amite County, Mississippi, it's really something to see.
At the hotel I used to work at there was a story passed down for decades about how Lynyrd Skynyrd were guests and they did an impromptu concert in the lobby. They noticed the grand piano sitting in the corner of the lobby and just started singing and playing, not just a song or two but for a decent amount of time. It would have been so cool to see these rock legends jam out just for fun.
@@DianeJennings there are two Country jam sessions that aren't impromptu but have that fun feel to them: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Will the Circle Be Unbroken - It's a who's who of Country stars. In particular, I think you would love a lady named Minnie Pearl. She was very funny and always wore a trademark hat that I think you'd find cute. Hank Williams Jr. - I Saw The Light - It's his dad's original song, so include the Jr. It has most of the same people in this and is again that fun jam band impromptu sing-along style.
Now imagine her as a 16 year old girl growing up in the rural South. Ii grew up in West Georgia in the 60's, 70's and 80's. These tunes are literally part of my DNA. Brings tears to my eyes seeing her joy from this music. I know exactly how she feels.
All of the guys who recorded this album have passed. Gary Rossington left us earlier this year. The last one. I also went to the 1987 reunion show. I saw them several times after. Skynyrd was my favorite band as a teenager. Still rocking out to them! What a shock right?
@@uncleedsautographsandstuff8813 Yes Artimus Pyle is alive. He was not the drummer on this song. It was Bob Burns who left the band after the album Second Helping. This song was from Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd, the first album. Artemis joined the band for the third album, Nothing Fancy. I saw the Artimus Pyle Band 5 or 6 years ago at a small club. He has a good band.
@@BillW1 I had all the Albums and I had tickets for the Madison Square Garden concert when the crash happened. I did work their concert at the Asbury Park Convention Hall. And hung out with Artimus when he was a guest at our convention last year.
My parents was at the volunteer jam concertin Nashville tennessee it was the first reuinionshow show after the plain crash when they played freebird they didn't sing the lyrics and the the crowd sing them
Not only is it the best intervention song but i.m.o.it is best Skynyrd song of all time.the guitar solos ,the ominous backing vocals by the honkettes and of course Ronnie's wolf whistle set it apart from the rest.ronnie was the coolest man to ever walk this planet.
I'm surprised a version of Freebird wasn't the most watched video. It's probably their most well known song along with Sweet Home Alabama. And if you want to watch a live performance, Freebird at Oakland Coliseum, which was filmed a few months before the plane crash.
Although I never got to see the original lineup perform live,I did get to see the reformed band play at the Compaq Center in Houston on New Years eve 1999,with Ronnie's younger brother Johnny as the lead singer.
Although the 1977 Oakland one seems to be the most popular among reactors, IMO the 1976 Knebworth video of Free Bird is better…by a slim margin, although they are both great. Check it out. Less footage of the crowd and more of the band. And Ronnie pissing off the Stones by sending Collins, and Gaines on to the forbidden tongue part of the stage. 😂
As mentioned the band named themselves as a joke after their gym teacher Leonard Skinner, who often put them in detention. It took him years to realize the connection and once he did he was not happy, but he eventually came to appreciate it and even became friends with the band. Later in life after he retired from teaching he opened up a bar and Skynyrd stopped by once and played .
I went to their concert in Greenville SC in 1977 the night before the plane crash! When I had my son in 1985 I dedicated this song to him, and on his graduation day also! Their music is a gift that will live on forever!
Simple Man is a great song. I've actually tried to live my life in a way that mama told me. I sure as hell didn't get the rich mans gold. I remember when my big brother brought this album home. We wore that sucker out! I almost posted this on your Patreon, but thought there might be an outside chance of you reacting to it. The band was named after the guys high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who always gave them a hard time about their long hair. If I may suggest, Free Bird, live Oakland 1977. The first concert I ever went to was at RFK Stadium in DC in1976. The line up : Ted Nugent Nazareth Lynyrd Skynyrd Aerosmith Outstanding show!
My first concert was Molly Hatchet, with 38 Special opening for them. I've seen Ted multiple times. Had 2nd row seats when he played the Auditorium North Hall in Memphis. My ears rang for three weeks.....later found out that Ted was wearing earplugs. :)
Johnnie Van Zandt, Ronnie's younger brother, took over as the lead singer when the band reformed in the late eighties. They are still on tour today. They were one of two of the greatest Southern Rock Bands of all time along with the Allman Brothers. They have a long list of hits and I saw them live in 2006 near Seattle, Washington with my two sons. They rocked the house down!
I just watched them live in concert last night (with ZZ Top) in a sold out show at Pine Knob in Detroit! It was my 3rd time seeing them live and was an amazing show. Plus, they can still sell out a site that can hold over 15,000 still today 😊
FYI Diane, the letter Y is a vowel depending on its location in the word. If the Y isn't at the beginning of the word or beginning of a syllable, when there are no other vowels, or when Y follows the last consonant of a word it's functioning as a vowel. In this case, "Lynyrd Skynyrd" all four of the Y's are the vowels. Some words only Y as its vowel are: by, cry, crypt, cyst, dry, fly, flyby, fry, glyph, gym, gypsy, hymn, lymph, lynch, lynx, my, myrrh, myth, nymph, psych, pygmy, rhythm, shy, sky, sly, spry, spy, sty, stymy, sylph, thy, try, tryst, why, and wryly.
I grew up with several Florida bands.. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tampa’s The Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, Blackfoot and 38 Special. A period in history I was proud to have experienced and will never forget.😎
Hi Diane, Skynyrd was named after their gym teacher Leonard Skinner. They were in the genre of Southern rock. They have so many hits you can check out, most notably Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama
Another classic of theirs you might really enjoy is The Ballad of Curtis Loew. The last surviving original member of the band, Gary Rossington, passed away very recently. They are truly a band worthy of a deep dive.
Happy Wednesday to you Diane! Great choice of a band to react to! Lynyrd Skynyrd is an amazing band! I have heard their song, "Sweet Home Alabama" played in a couple of movies. This song is pretty cool too. Thanks for sharing! Have an amazing rest of your week Diane! Always a pleasure to watch your videos! ❤🎉👋😎🎉
I am so glad that you are discovering Skynyrd! They are my favorite southern rock band......ever! Amazing backstory, amazing music, but tragic ending. They made so much awesome music in such a short time, I always wonder what they would have done if the plane crash never happened. Also, a big variety of styles of music with them. Ballads, country, blues and of course, rock.
The lead singer Ronnie Van Zant's brother, before taking over as lead singer of LS had a solo tribute song to his older brother called, JOHNNY VAN ZANT: "Brickyard Road" It always gets me. Especially the line, "I swore i saw a Free Bird fly. Ridin' the winds of a Southern sky."
The cover photo for Lynyrd Skynyrd's eponymous album was shot in my hometown, Jonesboro, Georgia, on Main Street, with the train depot and several businesses visible.
Song with a timeless message. Probably their most famous live performance is Free Bird. In 1977 they released an album called Street Survivors, three days later the airplane crash occurred, famously the original album cover had the band members engulfed in flames, the label reissued the album with a different cover, the original "flames" cover has become a collectable.
i still have the original unopened. It was a birthday gift from my brothers and didn't open it until a week after crash. Many documentaries on the band history and crash.
I also have the LP with the flames. I bought it within a day of it coming out and had actually just played it a few times when I heard about the crash. IMO the best live version of Free Bird on video is the 1976 Knebworth one where they opened for the Stones. Not as much time spent videoing the audience as the Oakland one. Also Ronnie defying the Stone’s orders to stay off of the tongue part of the stage and sending Collins, Gaines and Rossington out there. The version(s) from the One More From the Road Deluxe CD recorded live at the Fox in Atlanta are pretty great too. There’s a great documentary about the band and the plane crash called If I Leave Here Tomorrow which actually comes with the Live at Knebworth Blu-ray/CD. The rest of that concert as well as Free Bird is great too!
Great reaction! Skynyrd was one of the best Southern Rock bands of the 70s. If you want a live performance, Free Bird from several months before the plane crash is excellent. One of my favorite songs by them is Call Me The Breeze, but they had lots of bangers.
Skynyrd is from Jacksonville, FL (Where I'm from!) and were the epitome of what's now known as Southern Rock. They named the band after their high school gym teacher (Leonard Skinner - from Lee High where my grandfather went). Jacksonville and south Georgia were the heart and soul of Southern Rock! Glad to see you enjoying it!! There's a monument at the site of the plane crash... it was a huge loss for Southern Rock and American Rock. You should check out Freebird (Live at the Oakland Coliseum) and Sweet Home Alabama, next, and also look into the Allman Brothers Band, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, etc!
They are our hometown boys and beloved here in Jacksonville, Florida where they came from. I'm blessed to have direct connection to such an incredible band and so happy to see you finally react to them because they have so many amazing hits like "Free Bird", "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Tuesday's Gone" that I highly recommend. Please listen to more and thank you :)
@@tristanblackmore9772 oh, yes! We have to mention Blackfoot,.38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Van Zant and even though they're not Southern rock we also have Shinedown.
The word tragedy gets thrown around a lot today and is so overused, but it really is tragic that Ronnie Van Zandt died so young. He was a brilliant songwriter, capable of telling a musical story in such a unique way. It really is sad to think about how many other tunes he could have blessed us with in all these past years. I look forward to your reaction to many other great Skynyrd songs.
I would add the loss of Steve Gaines was also a tragedy as he wrote and co-wrote almost all of Street Survivors and sang co-vocals on You've Got That Right. He was an unrealized talent that had so much potential. Ronnie will always be a Legend, Steve was just getting started.
@michaeldavid6284 There are so many times where we wonder what if and why something happened that we end up taking things for granted. We honestly can't say what would have happened had that plane crash not occurred. Things could have gone great for them or completely disintegrated. We'll never know.
So much rock history wrapped up in this band. They wrote one of the top five rock anthems, helped define southern rock and carried on a musical debate with Neil Young
Good point. Most people think Sweet Home Alabama was a tribute to that fine State but it’s really about the band telling a peer “Hey we’re not all a bunch of backwards racist down here.”.
Free Bird at Oakland Festival 1977 just a few months before the accident. The studio version doesn't have the piano, as Billy Powell hadn't joined them yet. Billy was a roadie and when group took a break he sat down and started playing the song. Ronnie heard him and said from now on your in the band.
Classic song and band. Great choice. I also love that you dive in at the end to find out more info about the band. Yes, theirs is a tragic story but the music lives on.
Thanks I appreciate you liking that bit ! I guess I should’ve dug deeper because everybody is mentioning they sang Sweet home Alabama and I do know that song.
Ronnie Van Zant predicted he would never live to be 30, was killed a few months shy of his 30th BD. “Curtis Loew” is probably my favorite Skynard song.
Just came across your channel due to this song, one of Skynyrds best & lyrically just beautiful & so meaningful. Glad you liked this, keep diving into their library of music, you’ll be more than happy. This band is a cornerstone of Southern Rock alongside .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Allman Brothers, & the Marshall Tucker Band…all with fantastic music. Give them all a listen, you’ll be hooked. Think I will check out your channel, see what classic rock you have. Good reaction & commentary.
Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama are definitive classics, but I've always been a fan of their song, Call Me The Breeze. Especially the live version at Knebworth 76. If you would like to check a band you never heard of, may I suggest a band called Alabama. Enjoyed as always Diane, and tell Editor Diane that we appreciate her hard work as well. lol
By far, the best live song from Lynyrd Skynyrd to see is "Freebird" live @ the Oakland Coliseum from 1977. This was recorded just a few months before the plane crash.
@bobkupi9905 Freebird live 1976 at knebworth England. Is as great if not better because the English crowd didn't know what was coming. The day lynyrd skynyrd blew the Stones off the stage. Look it up it is great! But I agree that Oakland was awesome too!
Skynard had three guitar front-men. Each would play lead, or rhythm depending on the song and sometimes would switch roles throughout the song. All were outstanding and unfortunately are all no longer with us. The piano player, bass player and drummer were top notch and of course, the lead singer and backup singers.
Regarding the plane crash, exactly one month to the day before it happened, the band, Aerosmith was supposed to be onboard that same airplane to begin their tour. If I remember it right, Brad Whitford's dad, a former Navy pilot went to Dallas' Love Field Airport to inspect the plane. He was going to be one of the pilots for his son's band. After seeing the condition of the plane with multiple oil leaks, he promptly refused to fly it and warned the band against taking it. So the record company pushed it onto Lynyrd Skynyrd.
In my opinion one of the greatest live concert videos is Lynyrd Skynyrds Freebird at Oakland Coliseum 1977. It was just a few short months before their plane crash but one of the greatest performances in my opinion
Great Job with your reaction to *Simple Man* Diane. Everyone here that commented is 💯% right about you taking on *Freebird* Live in the Oakland, California Memorial Coliseum 1977. Guaranteed you will never forget watching this Live performance and your reaction to it. You can find out so much more about this whole amazing and sadly heartfelt story all throughout You Tube. Looking forward to seeing your reaction to Freebird soon.
I really only know them from "Sweet Home Alabama", but I did like the melody and lyrics for this song. I will have to go check out some of their other songs. And the plane crash was such a terrible accident. I went on reading a bit more and learned that the flight was going to be the last in that plane, because the band was going to get a new one after the LSU concert.
Try the live performances of the song " SEARCHING" at Kensworth ,,,when they opened up for the Stones ,and they blew tha Stones off the stage. Or "Freebird" at Oakkand
If you want a feel for how these guys can rock, check out "Gimme Three Steps", "What's Your Name", and of course "Free Bird". And if you like this kind of music, I might also suggest the Marshall Tucker Band, and The Allman Brothers (who are more blues. But I don't remember if you've reacted to them before). Rossington and Collins formed their own band called "The Rossington/Collins Band" which did fairly well into the 80's and before reforming Skynyrd.
I was born and raised in Jacksonville it was basically the birthplace of southern rock. The bands Molly hatchet, Blackfoot, 38 special all are from Jacksonville. But most famously the band The Allman Brothers were the biggest although they were not formed here this is where they got their start So definitely the birthplace of southern Rock.....
There's movie/documentary called Street Survivors: The True Story of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Plane Crash. It has actors in it acting out the life story of the band with video commentary breaks throughout the movie with surviving band member Artimus Pyle.
Loving these reaction videos to the music of my young days. As a “Senior,” your attention to our youth, dear beautiful young lady, is kind. Healing. Thank you. Bless you!
You chose a great song for your introduction to this iconic band. Ok, well they are iconic for anyone who grew up in the south eastern parts of the US. I feel to truly appreciate their music you need to be outdoors with an adult beverage in your hand, either around a fire or riding down a country road. Yes, for most artists a lyric video would be better to react to concentrating on the music more. Thanks Diane
Growing up in the Southeast - I actually lived in Gainesville, Florida many years ago, it felt like "one of ours" made it. They sounded like my cousins and aunts and uncles. They were poor like me, came from simple, proud families, etc. Sad, sad day when they crashed. The second version of the band was OK, but no Ronnie, no Skynyrd. He was not what the media tried to make him, but really a product of the awesome hippie era, mixed with Southern rednecks who hated hippies - it used to be dangerous to hitchhike alone!! Peace brother
I grew up down the road from Allen Collins who was one of their guitarists. If you want to see a great documentary on the band, check out If I Leave Here Tomorrow. Jacksonville was a really small town back when they came around, and it's amazing to me that you could have that many world class musicians from such a area. They are a legendary band with a bunch of incredible songs.
I remember very clearly the morning after that plane crash. My classmates and I, all second year aviation students in college, heard the news of the crash as we arrived for our 7:00am class. We were all stunned and shocked. Skynyrd ("Skinert") had just recently become a power band with a national following. From the release of "Second Helping" in 1974, their fan base grew rapidly and we all listened to their music by the time of the crash. A very sad morning indeed.
Chewie needs a rock band outfit with long hair, hat, a micro sized guitar and stage with micro sized instruments for him and his friends for a picture. That would look really cool.
"Define irony: Bunch of idiots dancing on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash." Love this Con Air quote, delivered by Steve Buscemi.
Charlie Daniel's would be another great group to listen to. The song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." I do like this song. I think it speaks to being who you are and not who others want you to be (which would complicate things). Obviously, somethings need changing, like narcissism or something. But otherwise, just be you. The poor letter "y." It must be very confusing to sometimes be a consonant and other times be a vowel.
I was a few miles from the crash. Never had a reason to visit the site. Amazing the way time works. You all be safe and enjoy the stories around you for the descendants that come along.
A great reaction / review. On of the greatest performance you will ever see, "Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird - 7/2/1977 - Oakland Coliseum Stadium" You will not regret seeing this one. I would love to be a petrean but alas I have no spare money. You're reading the words of a 74yo container with a 39yo soul inside. As we say here in Texas; y'all be safe.
Pretty damn hard to believe that anybody in the English speaking world has never heard of Skynyrd. They were one hell of a band, very big in the 70s but still well known. Freebird in one of those monster hits that most folks have heard many times.
Many people commenting about the Oakland ‘77 performance of Freebird. It is good, but the Knebworth ‘76 performance is Skynyrd at their most explosive.
As others have suggested, there are some other LS songs that you ought to introduce yourself to, these include: "Tuesday's Gone" "Saturday Night Special" "Gimme Three Steps" "What's Your Name" "Sweet Home Alabama" and of course "Free Bird" which evolved into a frequent request among drunken concertgoers. But this tribute to Duane Allman is one of the most durable classic-rock songs ever recorded. Like "Simple Man" and "Tuesday's Gone" from the same album, "Free Bird" is slow and meditative song until its not - becoming a driving power force of a song.
The classic live performance that everyone recommends, and I will concur, is Freebird from an outdoor concert in Oakland,CA. The performance is epic! Only negative is they use too much footage on the crowd, which is massive.
A must is every album that Lynyrd Skynyrd has ever released. This southern rock band has been kicking butt from day one. Their music is about life that Southern Boys and southern women live.
LS's "Sweet Home Alabama" is my favorite song...and I'm Serbian immigrant. "Freebird" is also phenomenal song, too! I still can't believe what happened to the band even after 45 years latter!?!
Diane, as someone who came from this generation of music, I find it refreshing to see you enjoying it. In the 70s and into the 80s there was a "southern rock" movement that consisted of bands like Lynard Skynyrd , 38 special, molly hatchet, and others, it was a mix of rock, blues, and country. One I may suggest is the Jeff Healey band that encapsulated all of these.
I think everyone has Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama as their favorite Skynyrd songs. One of my favorites is a humorous song they wrote a song about a young man getting in trouble in a pub over, what else, a woman. It’s called Give Me Three Steps.
I'm so happy you gave them a listen! I'm a southern girl and grew up listening to them. Highly recommend Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme Three Steps, What's Your Name, and Freebird. Those songs make my heart happy. That Smell is a very serious song but very well done.
"How does this happen?" Plane falls out the air. Pretty Sure 🤔 A kid I played music with, his name is Artimus, his Dad played backup drums for Lynyrd Skynyrd. TRUE STORY, little ole Mobile, AL. You never know who you're going to meet in life.
Just super, Di..Love your reactions. Ya, it's sad because that old plane had indications that it wasn't safe. Unreal that record company , management wouldn't intervene and get them a safe plane. Crazy.
They were a terrific and very popular band in the 70's. And yes, the triple guitar with multiple lead parts played simultaneously was their trademark. Free Bird would be the place to go to hear that, though Sweet Home Alabama was the song that broke them through. It was a song that, as one band member said (Ronnie?), 'Ether it will be a big hit or it will piss people off so bad that we don't get a second chance." It was a big hit. I was in my 'work week" of Navy basic training in the chow hall in 1977 when our supervisor told us the sad news. We were all just stunned.

Absolutely! The Oakland Colliseum performance of Freebird captures them at their finest and is epic!
I slightly favor the London version, opening for the Stones. Partly because it was an audience that didn't know the band.. But took notice during Freebird. Because how could you not?

It is a crash that never in a million years should've happened. They were having engine problems leading up to it with the same plane, and some of the band members didn't want to take that flight until it was fixed. LOTS of controversy surrounding that whole crash and the aftermath. "Free Bird" Live in Oakland was filmed just a few months before the crash. An optimal, and popular, viewing of them playing Live if you want to see them. Amazing crowd and atmosphere!
They ran out if fuel
As a lifelong professional pilot I cannot imagine doing that unless several other things go wrong.
Primary among them, bad weather.
In this case the weather was fine.

Don't forget Simple Man.
It is wonderful.

"That Smell" was inspired by Gary Rossington's dangerous life style. The "smell of death's around you" became ironic because Gary out lived them all, only recently passing away. RIP Gary!@@JohnMoore-xf5wy

I knew a guy like that years ago.

Lynyrd Skynyrd were a PHENOMENAL band. Rock and Roll royalty.
I grew up in Southern Alabama, listening to several bands considered to be the “Southern Sound “ of the 1970’s.
Lynyrd Skynyrd is still one of my favorite bands, throughout my life the songs of this band have always brought me back to my roots, to my home and to the music of my youth.
A common response by most Southerners when someone says Lynyrd Skynyrd is "Free Bird" or "Sweet Home Alabama." A true Southern classic rock band.
Yeah, I’ve definitely heard of. Sweet home, Alabama. Freebird, I don’t recognize the name of but maybe one for a future video. It’s funny that this is their most popular song because most people don’t seem to identify it as such.
Soo many more gimmie three steps, Tuesdays gone, saturday night special, ballad of curtis, plus many more
@DianeJennings please do Free Bird! The bottleneck on the guitar play is awesome!
@@DianeJennings Oh my god, if you ain't hearing Freebird, you ain't hearing Skynyrd. That song is the official/unofficial anthem us Southerners.
@@DianeJennings Freebird is a musical experience very similar to Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven".
Oh definitely! I love an impromptu, singsong
You got to see Freebird 1977 Oakland Coliseum it's an awesome Live Performance
@@DianeJennings there are two Country jam sessions that aren't impromptu but have that fun feel to them:
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Will the Circle Be Unbroken - It's a who's who of Country stars.
I heard they were kicked out of the hotel bar. What a shame. They went upstairs for a drink of champagne.
I heard this happened right around 8 o clock in Boise Idaho .@@Bob5mith

All of the guys who recorded this album have passed. Gary Rossington left us earlier this year. The last one.
I also went to the 1987 reunion show. I saw them several times after. Skynyrd was my favorite band as a teenager. Still rocking out to them! What a shock right?
Artimus Pyle is still alive.
I got to spend some time with Gary back in 2001 we talked about everything from music to sports really nice guy
@@uncleedsautographsandstuff8813 Yes Artimus Pyle is alive. He was not the drummer on this song. It was Bob Burns who left the band after the album Second Helping. I'm surprised a version of Freebird wasn't the most watched video. It's probably their most well known song along with Sweet Home Alabama. And if you want to watch a live performance, Freebird at Oakland Coliseum, which was filmed a few months before the plane crash.
We should put that on the list!
yep...Oakland
Totally agree with the Oakland live Free Bird. Just make sure you have a few minutes
No doubt this song is underrated, with the overall message being something that resonates with me and what I strive to be in life.
I do think this song is one of the truly great songs of all time, very heartfelt and soulful
Southern Rock is the genre Diane. So much great music by these guys.

The first concert I ever went to was at RFK Stadium in DC in1976. The line up :
Ted Nugent

@@DianeJennings FREEBIRD @Oakland Coliseum 1977. THAT,I promise is the Live performance to see:)

Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of the greatest story-telling bands of all time.
Sloppy Pop, a fictional band from Between the Lions, explains this in a catchy little song
"English is a difficult language, it can be understood through tough, thorough thought though"
And for the prononciation of "Lynyrd Skynyrd", just take a look to their first album"s title. 😛
A,e,i,o and u and sometimes y. This would be the exception to the rule😊
“Y” seems to suffer from an identity crisis. 😂
Best live performance to me is " T for Texas" 1976 in the U.K. when the opened for The Rolling Stones. So amazing.
That would have been an incredible show
“Don’t let that flag hit the ground “
You have to listen to more Skynyrd! FREEBIRD!!!!
The lead singer Ronnie Van Zant's brother, before taking over as lead singer of LS had a solo tribute song to his older brother called,
JOHNNY VAN ZANT: "Brickyard Road"
It always gets me.
Oh wow!
Free Bird is their best song
i still have the original unopened. It was a birthday gift from my brothers and didn't open it until a week after crash. Many documentaries on the band history and crash.
@@antipattern0 Freebird and Sweat Home Alabama are the most famous, but to me they have several that are just as good.
I seen Lynyrd Skynyrd ( original members) 3 times. Also had the album that had flames on the cover until after the plane crash

My favorite band of all time. Love this song. Such a great message. Definitely one of the most tragic bands.
Freebird at the Oakland Coliseum 1977 absolutely AMAZING performance

Free bird is another one of their best songs, especially the live video in Oakland.

Young Lady, Back when we had great music. So glad that you are hearing this and others. From Oklahoma USA
Songs like this have a way getting deep inside you, of moving you. They are sweet sad and hopeful all at the same time. You can’t forget them.
I'm glad you spent the time to hear them. They have many great meaningfull songs
Ronnie told his dad and family that he would not live to see his 30th birthday, BTW , that was true. Really Sad!!😢😮❤
The greatest band the music the lyrics the people the dedication to their life to what they loved the words to their music l love ly
