Primitive Cattail Basket & Acorn Harvest

  • It's November and acorns are in season now so I made a small basket from cattail leaves to collect them. Sadly, there was very little rainfall last winter and most of the trees don't have any acorns. I found a very small amount of acorns on a few trees and discovered that half of them had been infested by weevils. Nonetheless, I will process this small harvest and make an acorn pancake in another video.

    Okay so just an FYI. With acorns you need to look for the green ones. They are less likely to be rotten or bug hotels. Once you have a good amount cracking them open to harvest the meat is the right thing to do. You just need to boil them and change the water several times until the water runs clear to remove the toxic tanins. At which point you can allow them to cool and the grind them into a flour. Be sure to have a container you can seal ready to store the excess flour. After making the flour you can turn it into bread by adding a starch and a fat. You can get starch from the roots of the cattails. UA-cam has excellent resources on how to do that.

      Excellent information! Thanks a lot! Acorns are extremely scarce this year. Not much to choose from. I'm going to let them leach in a stream for a week then grind them down.

    I think that you can eat acorns, as the Native American Indians used to dry the acorns in the sun, and then grind them up to make acorn flour, when I was in school about 12 years of age we used to go on nature walks in the woods at the back of our playground, looking for acorns conkers and pine cones I used to find beach nuts to they have a creamy smooth flavour, I at one stage found a very unusual tree stump, so I toolkit bk to school with me it looked like a mountain with a mountain at the bk of it,it just kneaded a little help to make it more pronounced, and 3 D effect, as some of the girls in my class loved wood work, and so did I, can't remember what happened after that, loved school ,especially, working with clay, as we had a large kiln,, ps I've eaten dried insects, but could never eat them live like the little grub you ate in this video,they must have an earthy taste. But give me Durian fruit any time fresh or dryer, love it, now I'm used to it .take care I'm sorry or long comment, I just love talking to people,👍👍👍

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  5 років тому +1

      Yes, acorns can be eaten once they are properly leached of the tannins that they contain. The next step will be to submerge them in a stream for a week, then I will pound them and form them into a little pancake to cook and eat....The grub had no taste at all. It was very boring.... You had a great childhood I bet!

    I just had something of a minor epiphane....for lack of a better word. When one says in this genre of youtube they make a "primitive basket" is it only the material that's used, or the skills employed? What if an indiginous culture's master craftsman uses the same materials, and weaves a beautiful basket. would it still be....primitive? part of me wants to answer yes, either in the "rules" of no modern equipment, like chain saws, and power tools. OR yes, because the material it's self, is natural, and not some kind of synthetic plastic.
    But then another idea comes to mind later, the reality, of pesimism. maybe calling it Primitive thing, is just working the algorithms. I've seen plenty of "Primitive survival" videos with asian boys bonking about with sawn, seasoned lumber, that's obviously not hand made, and steel blades, that while roughly formed...also were not made by them. [but I have seen at least one far more legit youtuber smelt, and smith his own iron tools.]
