Build a Primitive Adobe Rocket Stove (Part 4)

  • Primitive cooking on the floor in the hut is inefficient and dangerous so I decided to build an adobe rocket stove. Being my first time building anything like this I was a bit unsure if my technique would be very effective so I did some research. I didn't find any good examples of adobe stoves online so this is a bit experimental. I also want it to be versatile for a number of cooking methods, i.e. baking, smoking, boiling, roasting, drying and firing pottery.
    I began by making a good number of adobe bricks from earth mixed with dry grass and water and letting those dry in a mould made of previously made adobe bricks. I then selected an area free of vegetation close to the hut and arranged a layer of large stones for the foundation. After the foundation was placed I spread mud over the stones and laid a layer of bricks for the base. I then began building the walls.
    In a effort to increase air flow to feed the fire oxygen I formed an adobe pipe to place between bricks on the bottom row of the wall. I really had no idea whether this would work or not but I figured that if it did not work then I could just stuff clay in the hole to cover it up.
    This is Part 4 of this project.

    Wow!! Fantastic job chad.. That stove works amazing!! It looks like you had a company that specializes in making adobe rocket stoves Come out to your site and build you one.. That's incredibly cool man.. And you never built one til now? Wow man.. That's just awesome.. The stove you built is so precise and level and the whole 9 yds bro.. The corners are straight and level.. The height is perfect.. Everything down to how perfect the bricks are.. I bet those bricks all weigh the same and everything huh?? Lol.. You take your time and really watch what you're doing at all times and everything you build or do turns out pretty much perfect man.. Once again you pulled off something amazing.. Great job chad.. Keep it up man and i can not wait to see what you do next.. Cheers..

    Nice, I love it. It looks like you got a clean, hot burn upwards. I liked that you fired some pottery too, that made me smile. Gran maestro de video.

      Raynola Dominguez Yes, I'm quite pleased with the results. The two pottery pieces were thrown a week earlier without much care to making them
      They were just for testing the fire.

    You could add something like a grate supported by small mud blocks inside of the kiln which help hold the pottery above the fire and keep the ashes away. Nice design nonetheless.

      Yes sir.. You can absolutely make ink with the soot.. If you look it up and do a little research on it im sure it'll tell you step by step what to do to get ink from soot.. I know this because my cousin and best friend are tattoo artists and I've watched them make ink from soot quite a few times.. And the soot ink is more durable and looks darker black than any other inks I've ever seen and not to mention it lasts a lot longer than regular ink.. And its pretty easy to make.. Like i said, Google it or whatever you want to do and go from there man.. Cheers..

    Awesome, I woke up to the next video. Looks like it worked well. Have you found any design changes that you would make yet? When I built my rocket stoves I noticed that if I heated them up slowly with a small fire then I would get a more complete burn when I made the fire bigger. I don't know if that makes sense. Love your videos. Looks like you didn't get any cracking of your ceramics. Yeah. Can't wait to talk later.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  6 років тому +2

      Blake Campbell Productions Hi Blake! When you say more complete burn you mean that there was more ash than what I ended up with? I will try that... Regarding the design, I would make the exhaust pathway a little longer. When I peer down the exhaust hole I can see flames wrapping around under the bend. I underestimated the power of a rocket stove... I will call you today. Soon.

    • @ahorseman4ever1
      @ahorseman4ever1 6 років тому +2

      Chad when the bricks are warm the whole stove draws better. I noticed a bit of carbon buildup and that is usually from incomplete combustion. Needs more air to fuel ratio. Another thing to get more draw would to build your chimney higher.

    I'm not sure that the "rocket" part of the oven worked out. There was a lot of soot inside of it, and possibly some creosote. It might have been what you were burning, but the point of a rocket stove is to burn hot enough that all of the flammable byproducts get consumed as well. The amount of soot means that it wasn't hot enough inside. Good oven, though. If you really want a rocket stove, or to use a rocket heater to warm your hut, try for something smaller. Your oven looks like it will work well for smoking and baking, though. It was definitely educational watching you make it.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  5 років тому +1

      Yeah, it was the first time making one. I know it isn't perfect. If I build another one I will try a different design.

      It'll make a good oven, if you can beat the sooting problem. If there's a primary wind direction, you could try setting up something to draw air from the wind.

    • @ChadZuberAdventures
      @ChadZuberAdventures  5 років тому +1

      There is a primary wind direction but the wind is generally very very slight. I had made a clay tube that goes through the wall at the level of the fire to draw in air. Is that something that would work for this purpose?

      I agree. I was concerned about having the stove to close to the hut because the roof is highly flammable. I may possible build another rocket stove and connect the heat vents to the Hut. I have to design a plan first.
