How to Get Lifesaving Water from an Agave Cactus

- In the desert water is often the number one survival priority. If there is no river or spring then what can you do to get water? Cactuses retain large amounts of water inside of them but that water is often mixed with toxic compounds that can cause more harm than good if you consume them. But there is a way to get safe drinking water from certain species of cactus. In this video I'll show you how to get water to drink from one of those species.

I think this is southern Cal. Maybe the Mountains due East and South of L.A. perhaps?(I did not think White Sage thrived in the Palm desert heats, we have harvested it years by journeys there up Mountains west of L.A.
Beautiful lands, more survivable than any city, by my experience!(Rather live and die out here/there than any concrete jungles, tried that a couple decades,-sad dystopian indoor maintenance does not maintain self I've found....Thank You Chad, see u years, you are great and humble brother, maintain.

I don't know if anyone goes out into the wilderness with you on these trips but your videos always have that authentic "Survivorman" (one man and a camera) type feel to them.
If that be the case then I'm imagining all the shots you do are very similar to how he does them. For example: finding a spot, setting up the shot with the camera, walking back or forth to get footage of you walking either to or from an area and then going back to get the camera and setting up the next shot doing this several times on your way to the destination, rinse and repeat. Appreciate 🙌
You’re exactly right. There are only a few videos I made where I had a cameraman and you can tell because the camera is moving while recording me.
I really like your videos. They make me fantasize about living like this instead of being in the city madness. I have some survival training and experience and totally appreciate how time consuming and hard it is to live this way. However, it is very rewarding at the same time. Agave are one of my favorite plants because they are so useful for cordage and for food. I eat the flowers all the time when I'm hiking or backpacking in southern California. They are very tasty. As you likely already know, the native Americans would dig up the plant and roast it for food. The local Kumeyaay are starting to bring back this tradition and are doing annual roasts. Keep the entertaining videos coming!
Enjoy your hikes outdoors now because it is really beautiful this time of year. I do know about cooking agave hearts in an earthen pit. I have wanted to do this a long time but I don't want to go through the experimental stage with whole plants because it kills the plant. I would love to attend a roast by the Kumeyaay and learn from them.

This idea of fantasising this kind of life is so interesting, because when I mentioned such a thing to a war survivor his response was very different. It's very weird how much the ones that live in the comfort of our own homes crave these survival mode, while others live in it. We just crave it because it's a choice, you get up and choose to go to a deserted island, or down a cave or wathever there is. When you become a subject in these things and you have no choice it's such a different story. And yes I get the craving of exploring and all that. We all have that.

Yeah, it really makes no difference how it is classified. Taxonomy of plants changes throughout time too. It's just a manmade system and doesn't affect the real life applications of the plant.

Yup I'd definitely drink that, if the old people were smart enough to use it to help them survive and thrive in that environment anyone would be a fool to ignore them. I love the fact that you showed us the mortar holes, what an incredible people they must have been. It's also really interesting to learn about the different processes and plants especially because I'm on the other side of the planet, and I live in what's considered the harshest environment in southern New Zealand but it doesn't hold a candle to this environment. I trust the history of the ancient people more than modern science. Modern science is little more than marketing campaigns for corporations. I had been to this area many times before but I never saw those mortar holes until this day. I was so happy to find them. Evidence of an ancient culture carved in stone. I can only imagine how they lived.

When I was younger, we found a big burn midden in the Guadalupe mtns. Turns out natives were using them to cook hundreds of agave hearts. Specifically it was lechuguilla agave. Very useful plant.

Another excellent video. The flowers are so beautiful and seeing how you get water from the Agave leaf is interesting. My "hubby" heard the sound of scraping and asked if you were scratching a lottery ticket. I told him in the desert, survival us kind of like a lottery.
I think chances of survival are greater in the desert than with the lottery. Hahaha.

How should My holy name be proclaimed? How should My name be spread in any among the nations that call Me by any of My names? When I return again, the nations will have been divided by the boundaries set by My blazing fire. At that time, I will again manifest Myself to mankind as the scorching day, showing Myself openly to them in the image of the Holy One they had never seen before, walking among so many nations, as I, Jehovah, once walked among the Jewish tribes. There they will certainly see My glory, and they will also certainly see a pillar of cloud in the sky to guide them in their lives, because I will appear in the holy places. Everywhere in the world, people will bow down, and My tabernacle will be firmly established in the midst of humanity, upon the foundation of the work that I have now accomplished. Newborn lambs and calves will be piled on top of the holy altar. I will tear down the present temple and build a new one. The temple that stands now, filled with abominable people, will fall, and the one I will build will be filled with servants who are faithful to Me. They will be like the Israelites today, wearing priestly robes and crowns, with My glory, Jehovah, in their midst, and My royalty roaming among them and remaining with them.)

When I RETURN AGAIN, the NATIONS will have been divided by the borders SET by My BURNING FIRE. At that TIME, I will reveal Myself to mankind again as the LAST DAY, showing Myself OBVIOUSLY to them in the IMAGE of the DIVINE they have NEVER SEEN, WALKING in the MIDST of so many nations, as I, JEHOVAH , was once WALKING with the JEWISH tribunes. PEOPLE WILL SEE My DAY of righteousness, and so will My glorious manifestation. That WILL happen when I RULE OVER THE ENTIRE EARTH and BRING My MANY children to GLORY. 🙏
EVERYWHERE in the EARTH, PEOPLE will BOW, and My TABERNACLE will be FIRMLY ESTABLISHED in the MIDDLE of mankind, UNDER the FOUNDATION of the WORK I am PERFORMING NOW. ☀️
PEOPLE will also SERVE Me in the TEMPLE. The ALTAR, which is filled with FILTHY and abominable THINGS, I will DESTROY and REBUILD. The NEW born lamb and calf will be piled on top of the HOLY ALTAR. After I CRUSH ALL the NATIONS, I will GATHER them AGAIN, and from there I will BUILD My TEMPLE and ESTABLISH My ALTAR, so that ALL may OFFER Me offerings, SERVE Me in My TEMPLE, and FAITHFULLY dedicate themselves in My WORK among the GENTILE nations. I've used the fruit to make a fermented beverage and they are also great in acorn pancakes.
I drink water from the cooked agave and aloe leaves for taste, along with cuachalalate and chardon de Marie, in the preparation you make the flavor is very light and I am already accustomed to the bitter taste

There is water underground but no water on the surface. Did someone tell you that there is always surface water where there are palms? That simply isn’t true.

Wonder if you would think about giving seminars to small groups or individuals and actually take people on trips like this and teach them to use these skills. Making your own bricks out of clay and then building a structure as well as the ways you cook and trap food.. amazing
I would love to do all of that. Maybe in the future I'll be able to make that happen.

I believe much was learned simply by accidental exploration. At some point humans realized that cooking softens food and makes it easier to eat. At some point they came to realize that water was stored in plants. Through trial and error they would test and learn. I still practice this. Google doesn't know everything. Wikipedia doesn't know everything. There are so many mysteries remaining to be discovered.

I never had a reaction other than minor itching that lasted ten minutes. Then I read about it online and learned that people get terrible sores and breakouts from the sap of agave.

My skin is aging, but not as fast as most people. I eat a very healthy diet that nourishes the skin. I often apply oils, seaweed, or even certain cactus on my skin.
