If a disorder or injury interrupts or disturbs the way neural signals are transmitted through the spinal cord, a condition called myelopathy occurs. Spinal cord problems occur most often in the cervical spine, but may sometimes occur in the thoracic spine.
Myelopathy can be difficult to detect. Usually it develops gradually in seniors, with a loss of coordination, difficulty navigating stairs, or with problems fastening buttons. Sometimes, for example, after a neck injury, myelopathy may develop and worsen rapidly. Its symptoms depend on the location and severity of spinal cord compression.

My mother who is in her 80's began to lose the use of her left arm following
what should have been routine surgery to clean out the infected wound after
she had a right knee replacement. Her problem with her left arm and hand
first appeared when she was shifting gears whilst driving. She also had
problems with steering the car. She went for a MRI scan, and was told she
has "Cervical Myelopathy" She had the knee surgery and washout back in
2018. They told her she would need surgery to correct the problem which
was in her neck, but because of her age, she declined. She has got much
worse since that operation, and is now severely disabled, having almost
lost all her motor functions, both arms, both legs, and is currently in a Care
Home. She has also began to lose her ability to talk. Is this normal for
someone with "Cervical Myelopathy"? She now regrets not having surgery
because she is completely disabled, and relies on me, and her Carer's in
every aspect of her life.
I just got diagnosed with this. From what I've read, yes, it's normal that your mother is in this state. I don't blame her for rejecting the surgery though because of her age. She may have very well woken up from the operation with no mobility.
I'm so sorry that your mother has to go through this. God bless.
@@GrplrZrn May God Bless You, for your "Kind Words" I sincerely Hope
you don't go through what my Mother is right now.. She is dead from the neck down,
and even her speech has been affected, to the point that she can't speak coherently
any more. The thing is, my three Brothers are just taking it all lightly. Am I the only
one who Truly Cares for her? Once again, I hope that you never reach her stage, it
is a "Living Nightmare" I read recently, that Celine Dion has got similar problems.
My Dad did have surgery for this condition at 79 years old but it hasn't helped. Nearly a year after the operation, he is still dependant on carers and can do very little for himself. And I know what you mean about brothers, I seem to be the only one that is concerned about his state of mind. This is really affecting his mental health and he keeps saying that this is no kind of life. He was very healthy and active when this all started at 77 years old and now he sits in his chair all day and struggles to get up from his chair even when using his frame. He is also totally exhausted.@@garydunn3037 Such a cruel condition.

@@Protogorius Its not my Grandma, its my
