2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid Pickup Is A David Taking On Goliaths (But Not As Small As You Might Think)

  • Like Bruce Lee, the all-new compact Ford Maverick pickup should be taken very seriously. Built on the same architecture as Bronco Sport, engineers lengthened the wheelbase 16 inches and gave it a 4 ½ foot FlexBed. And it all works, sometimes better than a bigger rig. Comfortable and practical, it’s the trucklette many didn’t know they needed. Available with a 250 horsepower EcoBoost 4-cylinder, the standard hybrid powertrain should see 40 MPG in city driving. Tom Voelk travels to Nashville, TN to drive both engines. This video focuses on the hybrid powertrain, here's a link the EcoBoost video- • Ford Maverick EcoBoost... .

    Great review, thanks! I do wish that you had not called the transmission simply as a CVT however. It creates confusion, because it is not a traditional belt and pulley based CVT at all. In fact there is no traditional transmission, it is a two-motor-and-planetary-gear system being passed off as a E-CVT, which means simplicity and fewer parts to break. I have a Hybrid XLT on order and can’t wait to get my hands on my first truck!

Some manufacturers are really out here charging for an armrest or charge port option, big kudos to Ford baking in all the fundamental quality of life features. I have always had a "true" compact pickup since 1985 when I got a Chevy S10 with the 2.5L "Iron Duke" and a 4-speed manual. I always get 2WD, inline 4 and a manual transmission. I have also had quite a few full size pickups and always 4WD, V8 and an automatic. The big trucks can get things done. Period. But I like driving the small trucks a whole lot more when I'm not getting things done. Or for small jobs. They handle so much better, use WAY less gas and are so easy to maneuver and park. Not to mention fitting UNDER things like doorways. I'm glad to see the return of a true compact pickup at an affordable price. The hybrid gets 40+ mpg? Wow.

    The idea of buying a full-size truck so you can move a couch-or any large furniture-is so wild to me. How often are you moving couches? I'd buy the smaller, cheaper truck and then rent a full-size truck for $15/hour from Home Depot, Lowes, etc. only when I need it. For how much money you'd save on gas and a monthly payment by going with this, you could rent a truck every month and still come out ahead. Obviously, I'm not factoring in other things-like interior quality-but from a purely functional standpoint, I just don't understand why you'd spring for the big truck.
    Also, does anyone else see any of the original Honda Ridgeline (or the 2nd gen Honda Pilot) in this design? Obviously the bed is quite different, but the lines and the slightly-rounded-but-squared-off look seem similar to my eye.

      I've owned a Ford Ranger (2011, old style). I am NOT a pickup person. But I use the 6' bed all the time. It hauls my bikes. It makes trips to the dump. I know for a fact that I own 27 ranger beds worth of stuff (I moved, it took 27 trips in the Ranger to move all my stuff). I have a tonneau cover on it, the roll up style like the Santa Cruz does. Even with the tonneau cover housing taking up space in the bed, I can STILL get a full size mountain bike in with the tonneau cover closed - ideal for leaving the bike in the truck while I go into the gas station or into any store. I can't do that with a 4.5' bed.
      -
      Although to your point, I also don't see the need for a full size "look at my truck, not my tiny penis" monster truck. I live in big truck country, and I see more of them towing trailers than I see actually putting stuff in the bed. You know, because you have to have a ladder to get in the bed...

    I'm 20 Y/O I have driven the same 2012 Ford Fusion since high school, I have driven a variety of trucks and do steer more towards the midsize both for use case and budget. Unfortunately, gas prices are a pain right now so MPG is at the top of my list. I am looking at a compact-midsize pickup and they all seem to offer great things for what I want and need. The Nissan frontier looks old and I personally am not a fan of Nissan, it does ride nice but the interior is dated, The Tacoma is best in class reliability and have heard great things but I have test driven a 2019 and I am 6'1" I have hit my head on the roof which is not fun, also the cabin feels a lot more like a sedan than a pickup. The ranger is kind of out of my price range but it feels cramped, not really as much as a midsize pickup should. The Maverick hits almost everything I want and it does so at an affordable price point. I am exactly the customer that Ford is marketing to. My 2022 Maverick XLT W/Lux package and Ford 360 Co pilot is going to be delivered sometime in January and I cant wait!

      That works really well on the maverick actually. Had a chance to see a Maverick xlt in area 51. That exterior color, with the white,gray, orange and blue interior was almost a revelation. A revelation that not every affordable new car needed to be a sea of gray on the inside. I'll be honest, didn't like the interior of the xlt maverick at all when I saw the initial pics and vids. After experiencing it in person, my mind is blown. It uses some cheap plastics because duh, but it looks fantastic for the price point. Feels and looks much nicer than the 24k xlt price would suggest.

      @@DIYtryer To be fair, we've spent the last like 14 years living with a Kia Rio where every single piece of the interior aside from the gauges is a washed out gray. So seeing a colorful interior again was a very joyful experience. You never realize how much vibrant colors matter to you, until you've been driving a gray sweaty swamp like I've been for over a decade.

    The reviewers and manufacturers keep talking about carrying plywood, mulch and ATVs… honestly most of us don’t carry any of those things hence no need to throw that as a selling point. We are city dwellers who mostly haul trash bags and small appliances like a new fridge/stove from BestBuy on Black Friday or a cooler on the 4th of July, Memorial Day and pumpkins for Halloween. That’s it! lol

      @@TinLeadHammer Cheap, small, robust. It's like the old ranger in plenty of ways. Factoring in inflation, it's actually cheaper than the old ranger, it's even cheaper that the model Y incredibly. It's more powerful, obviously more fuel efficient, has a higher payload, should be more durable long term, looks better, is safer, has more tech, and more character. It's a home run, one of the first cheap cars in quite some time that's so good that it breaks my brain.

    One comment from the sticks on whether Ford or Hyundai;
    Ford has dealers almost everywhere, for me about an hour and a half away, the Hyundai is 8 to 9 hours away.
    And there 2 other Ford dealers along that same path.
    For most this might not be a thing, but if they venture far from home it might be.

    I for one am excited, i just ordered my maverick a few weeks ago and can’t wait to drive it, I’ve had a ranger for about 14 years and hate how large the new trucks have gotten, even the maverick is larger then my old ranger. But its within what i consider a good size for the handy man work i do. So while I’m loosing a bit of bed space and gaining unneeded cab space, I’m looking forward to an updated and modern truck, ill miss the simplicity of my old ranger. Here’s to hoping that the maverick lasts just as long as my old truck.
