    I went in to place an order on one of these, almost in this exact spec, 3 days after the reservation system went up. 2 dealers thought I wanted a Lightning, one said no, and one responded come on in. I went through the build process, agreed on a down payment, was ready to write a check and agree to MSRP when the dealer showed the final sheet. $5000 markup, would not negotiate. Over 20% markup on a Fusion Ranchero - absolutely insane

    I think it's important to point out that the CVT in the Maverick is like the unit found in Toyota hybrids. There is no belt, rather it uses a planetary gearset and one or more electric motors. Thus it doesn't suffer from the issues that belt-driven CVTs such as the infamous JATCO units put in Nissan vehicles.

    I am not a Ford guy but damn this is a compelling vehicle. This truck, specifically in the XL and XLT hybrid trims I think is the sweet spot of the Maverick line. I am a farmer in northern Michigan, a particularly snowy area at that, and know any decent fwd car with proper snow tires is plenty good for most winter conditions. My wife has a 35 minute, one way, commute daily and this would be a great commuter car, can fit our 3 kids in the back if needed, can grab feed, supplies, a good amount of stuff since it has a 1,500lb payload. It gets better mpg than our current sacrificial commuter car and it’s cheap enough you don’t feel bad piling miles on it. I feel it could do 75% of the stuff our full size truck is used for, it could be used quite a bit instead of that truck. This trucklet is a breath of fresh air and is clean looking, non gimmicky. Awesome. Can we do this with all vehicles? God save us from Easter eggs on cars. Anyway, just wanted to add some perspective that it doesn’t just appeal to urban city folks with an addiction to Home Depot runs.... I would use the hell out of this on our farm, and as a daily driver for our rural area. Just wish they weren’t completely sold out for ‘22 already for the hybrid versions.

  • @Sir_Pants_Alot

    The price point is amazing for so many different reasons. Any one of them would be impressive.
    1. It's a pickup for 20k. And even on base it has an 8 inch touch screen with android auto / apple carplay, modern collision mitigation systems, and 4 doors. I think the next cheapest 4 door vehicle with a bed is probably the colorado wt for 29k. Well there's also the Santa Cruz for 24k or so starting. Although Hyundai is afraid to refer to this vehicle as a truck.
    2. Its a hybrid for 20k. A Honda insight or Toyota corolla hybrid are both around 23k. You can comfortably fit 4 + a bunch more cargo in the Maverick. I think it's actually the cheapest new hybrid in the US. And it's on the larger side of hybrids with lots of space for people and cargo.
    3. It's Fords cheapest new vehicle. The base price is even lower than the EcoSport by a few hundred. Which is a piece of junk they need to get rid of immediately. The next cheapest thing you can get from ford is an Escape for an extra 6k.
    I'm not sure how many "Truck" people are going to buy a Maverick. And it certainly isn't for EVERYBODY. Some people are offended by the very idea of unibody truck. But just comparing it to any new vehicle on the market right now the Maverick sounds pretty dang impressive compared to anything close to its price.

    • @tavirosu25
      @tavirosu25 2 роки тому +3

      Indeed. Even more if they really care the price is 20k or 25k for an Escape, assuming they lease it. I get some people are fixated on the price, but how many new cars are cash or full purchase instead of leased.

      Although with Ford if you go to a decent dealer they'll order you a vehicle from the factory and you pay MSRP - any current incentives when it arrives. So if it truly isn't possible to get a Santa Cruz for MSRP... then get a Maverick. Or wait 6 years and hope the market stabilizes at some point.

They never really get cruddy over the years. Unlike the soft touch in more expensive stuff, starts to crumble apart after 10yrs. Best vehicle purchase I've ever made. Things a tank, and can still get like 27MPG highway. With inflation if I sold it now, I'd probably make a couple grand on it. Its all the pickup truck i'll ever need. In 1986 I bought a Forest Green 2wd Ranger for a little over $7,000. It was my first manual transmission vehicle and had to learn on it. I beat the hell out of it driving around. I did the "going in reverse-throw it in neutral-turn the wheel-spin around-pop it in gear and drive off" trick. I let my friends drive it, I jumped the small cement parking space stoppers (or whatever they're called) when they had snow packed up against them. Aside from breaking a motor mount and the clutch dying after a few years of the abuse, it never failed to start. I remember putting air bags in the front springs and adding a 3" body lift kit and having 31" Dick Cepek tires (there goes the gas mileage and highway acceleration) and American Racing "Outlaw" wheels. Wouldn't you know it? The 1987 model featured the exact same style wheels as standard. And they offered an extended cab. Had I known they would have an extended cab, I would have waited.

The Soul thought it was a truck but was limited on cubic space for large items or stuff I didn't want to haul inside. Lucky to get 30mpg out of it. First tank in Maverick looks like I'll get 45mpg. Drove 440 miles and computer reads 178 left on tank. Will know when I fill up how accurate it is. I'm hypermiling first tank just to see what's possible. 20% city and 60-65 mph max hwy. Normally, I watch these reviews thinking about all the people taking on debt to buy shit they don't need. I have a 2010 Crown Vic police car for the weekdays and a 2003 MR2 Spyder for the weekend. Both are quite utilitarian, reliable, and best of all - cheap to buy and own. Those two vehicles costed a combined $10,000 and this Maverick is the first new vehicle I've seen that made me think "damn I might get rid of both of my cars to get this truck with a kayak mount for just a tad over $20k" Kids are on the way and the MR2 is not going to see much street time anyway.

    If you aren't sure about this truck, take your time to decide on what's best for you, but personally, I am blown away by what a nice vehicle this is. The ride is smooth, the cabin has more space than you'd imagine (even in the back seats), the tech is solid, and the fuel efficiency is incredible. Put another way, there is no hybrid for this price. There is no truck for this price. That you can get a nice hybrid truck for this price that actually rides well, fits four comfortably and that can still haul upwards of eighteen 4x8 foot plywood sheets or a half ton of cargo is incredible. I really wish that people would stop saying this truck is "under $20,000".... It's Not. Unless you can talk Ford into allowing you to go pick it up at the factory (yeah, good luck with that...), then the truck is about $21,500 due to the MANDATORY destionation charge. It's time for all the manufacturers to just include that in the price of the vehicles, not as a seperate line, just include it in the MSRP. Destination charges continue to climbe higher and higher and add to the bottom line that we all have to pay for vehicles. Nothing against this channel or the people that are on it. This is just a general gripe with anyone stating that a vehicle is whatver price it is and some say plus destination and some don't. It's like all the "doc fees". By the time you go to pay for this vehicle, they will add destionation, doc fees, makret adjustments, not to mention whatever tax you have to pay in your state. I'll get off my soap box now. I've said my part. And again, nothing against the guys on this channel. The review was nice and the overall video was good. Just time to call it for what it is with the way manufacturers and dealerships add to the total that you have to pay. We don't need a little asterick and fine print. I just want to see dealerships and reviewers say what this will cost most people out the door.

The transmission is a planetary gear set not the crap belt driven CVT like on the Honda or Nissan. Plus Ford has built trucks forever and that know how has shown on the off road and utility videos that are out there. The last generation Ranger was a great work truck. Anyone who didn't like it never rode it while it was new and used it for what it was- a work truck. Price wise, Ford always offered great rebates and deals on them, way below msrp. To me its the most underrated car made ever, mainly because most people only experienced them after a company used them for work and sold them. Being smaller than a half ton, it didnt sit well. The S10 was the same, but with a small cult following in the "minitruck" world.

      Had a 2012 Focus SEL, had it in 3 times for the well-known transmission issues, twice for the fuel tank compression problem, and once for the door latch, all covered under warranty and recall. Put 100K on it. Bought a 2016 Escape SE, drove it to 50K and ended up upgrading to a 2019 Escape SE which I've only put 25K on it so far over the last two years. Despite component issues with the Focus, overall the actual build quality on these last three vehicles give me confidence in the Maverick since it's essentially on the same platform.
