Just got a Buick envista a couple months ago. I am a 56 y.o. woman and it is my first new car. After years of frugality, I have a couple nickels to rub together and am starting to spend them. It is in the copper ice metallic and I splurged and got it packed. Love it! I even have guys stopping me in parking lots to tell me they think it is cool. I look around to find out who they are talking to, but wait, you're talking to me? Paid 33 all in. Couldn't be happier. As to those who say it is underpowered, so far I have not needed to engage in any John Wick style evasions from the bad guys, so I am good.
Congrats! So exciting to get your first new car! The copper color is gorgeous. You made a good call getting some extras its always nice to have them and not wish you got them later, its worth spending that lil extra.
Just picked mine up a few weeks ago, I got it in all black, tint and all - truly a head turner and head scratcher because people don’t know what it is. When they see it’s a Buick they are stunned lol
To all the critics of a 3 cylinder small engine; I had a 1200 cc 3 cylinder with 120k miles; no engine issues. Small can be beautiful. Tom , good to see you so happy about a new car!
Did you ever have issues with over heating with 3 cylinders? Someone on here made a comment they think this would overheat easily..I am buying one in a couple weeks
Thanks for the great quick look, Tom! The ‘Wildcat’ front look is restrained enough to be good, not polarizing. For Envista vs Trax, Envista’s key attribute is that fastback look that leans it toward sedan in appearance. I like it. For value though, there’s likely a Trax configuration that delivers most of the Envista’s niceties and stays $3K - $4K more affordable. And for many, that difference makes getting a new drive possible!! Thank you for your thoughtful and thorough reviews; greatly appreciated!
I ordered The Envista Avenir, and it shipped from South Korea last Friday. I also received the GM Employee discount. I ordered the Moonstone Gray Metallic color.
Just bought the 2025 Envista top trim Avenir today! Black with beautiful pebble gray interior. My granddaughter bought the black with black rims. I’ve been shopping for over 8 months for a new car. Couldn’t find anything I liked without a dumb looking tablet screen and everything was black/red/ or orange interior! Wanted a more sophisticated interior. The taupe is so beautiful with lots of stitching. So far I’m loving it. Lexus IS didn’t even have wireless Apple car play or a wireless phone charger. This is fun to drive and looks more expensive than what I paid at $30,000 OTD. Highly recommend
I would purchase this vehicle in a heartbeat. I love it and the price does not matter. The perceived value is about 40k, to hear this Buick is selling for $29k, is amazing. Great job, Tom.
A Voltec drive train - along with a small e-axle in the rear for AWD with a starting price of $35K would have been doable - too bad GM retired the Voltec drivetrain - it would need a redesigned floor pan to accommodate the battery pack and would probably lose space for the spare tire.
I am getting my sport package in two weeks, you don't have issues passing on the highway? Has good pick up? I am not expecting amazing results in this category but used to driving mustangs or tubo 4 cylinders..so it's not bad despite the three cylinder?
I plan to buy the Chevy Trax. same chassis and motor as this. I love the Envista looks, but I like the Trax looks a little more and it's a little cheaper. This Buick is so so nice for the money.
I saw a Facebook post guy who said his engine went at 4500 K. A lady said it's been nothing but problems for 9 months. The dealer can't fix the problem due to not having parts available. I was considering the Envista until i read the comments about the engine being 3 cylinders. Someone complained about A/C. I tend to keep my cars for 10 plus years. I average less than 10K miles per year. The Envista is a beauty. I also read something about it having a wet timing belt $$$$$
I joined a Facebook group for Envista owners to see how they're holding up. Everything you say is true. There have been a handful of engine failures. The most common issues seem to be body trim falling off the exterior, power windows not working, glitches with the digital instrumentation, AC failure, and interior squeaks/rattles. I'm in groups for other comparable vehicles and although every vehicle has it's issues, the Envista/Trax by far are having the most problems. A case of you get what you pay for.
This channel doesn't get the attention it deserves. High-quality content and excellent presentation. Can't say the same for some of the other automotive channels with a lot more subscribers and views with obnoxious and annoying presenters.
It looks great and is priced well. The only negative may be a questionable powertrain (in terms of long term reliability), but tiny boosted engines seem to be the norm for most vehicles now. Personally, I'd prefer a hybrid option instead of a turbo since they are more reliable and improve fuel economy all while giving a bit of a boost to power. That said, if you are in the market for an affordable vehicle, this is likely a pretty solid offering.
Small three cylinder boosted engines are the future, most brands are switching to this. But this is the cheap bad version of this engine, the 1.3T is better in every way, more efficient AND more power. They really cut corners. Hopefully the refresh of this at least gets the 1.3T and an infotainment that is larger and fills out all the huge bezel.
Doesn't make a difference, the 1.3T is still available as it is for the Korean built Trailblazer. The 1.2T is the same engine, just a cheapened version. @@faheemabbas3965
Nice vid. I’ve been getting 40mpg freeway average, so I feel they severely underrated the fuel economy. So far so good, but hate the lack of the rear center armrest/cupholders. Gonna have to find an aftermarket front seatback solution. The power is more than adequate and I feel the exhaust note under full throttle is actually much nicer than the old 1.4L Turbo. The thing people forget about this and Trax is that they are lightweights at only 3100lbs. They get up and move all things considered. These are moving pretty quick too. I had vehicles sold out from under me a few times before I was able to close on mine.
I've been waiting on this one. I think if Buick can slap on a hybrid power train and make it a simple 3cyl with good reliability and easy to repair in the aftermarket, Buick can save GM from bankruptcy. I'm speaking from pragmatism. I dont wanna dole out more than 30k for my commuter CUV
@@snoopingasusualisee3903apparently there have been laws signed saying that cars need to get a certain average mpg that’s getting higher every time the law gets refreshed. For one year I sold Cadillacs and Buick's. Buicks were much quieter than their Cadillac counterpart and shared much of the same drive train and underpinnings. The LaCrosse was a very underrated sedan. Despite of all G.M.s efforts, Buick could never shed the "grandpa" image which was too bad as Buick routinely offered some of the better incentives in the G.M. portfolio. The Envista looks like a low priced contender and if it had any badge on it besides Buick, it would likely sell in modest numbers. The only reason why G.M. hasn't killed off Buick is that it is considered a premium brand---in China, where over one million units are sold annually vs. around 200,000 in the U.S.
I need a good commuter and this checks the boxes. I just wanted adaptive cruise control, a sunroof, Apple car play, and leather seating. Anything beyond that is a bonus. I also like that it sits a bit higher. My back isn’t what it used to be.
Great review and a surprisingly nice car for the price; one thing you said that was incorrect though: you said all LED exterior lights but the brake/turn signal lights are incandescent and for the record, horribly placed just like the Bolt EUV. Why have brake lights on the bumper??
Thanks for video Tom. We put a deposit down on an ST back @ end of July . Car came in last week & finally getting to drive one we were not impressed. Exceptionally well done review as always! And good to see you do a review on a vehicle that is within the means of "mere mortals"!!! Doubt we'll be seeing this car in Australia though!!!
I have mixed memories of my family's '95 LeSabre. Like the Envista, it was cheapish on the materials, neglectful for back seaters, but big trunk , roomy, and soft ride. The 3.8 V6 was surprisingly peppy...the new car's engine is literally and figuratively half of what it once was. This car seems like it's an upscale commuter/decompression chamber. Buicks were the choice of dentists years ago. Perhaps they've found that market again.
Great looks. SUCKY bumper brake lights. Gm is doing more of this…and it has to stop. Signals at the bumper are fine… but brake lights need to be more visable,
I like Buick the best for a USA brand, but this reminds me of a taller version of my previous reliable 07 Mazda 6i 5-door hatchback I owned from 2009 until 2018, and traded it in on a 2019 CX-5 signature. However it doesn't have the overall quality and personality of the Mazda, nor the rear window wiper. It's a nice departure from the regular CUV/SUV design. But to turn an old Buick ad line phrase, " I'd really rather have a Mazda!" Thanks, for the review.
Purchased the Preferred, fully loaded, just over $27K and a better ride than the ST and/or Avenir. Preferred: 17” wheels a.k.a. More rubber between you and the road. ST: 18” Avenir: 19” Both have less rubber between you and the road. Test drive each and you will feel the difference.
Hey Tom, what are your thoughts on the engine idle stop-start system? Do you think it isn't good for the engine? Many people believe it should be shut off, every time you turn the vehicle on. But if the engine isn't running, there's no wear and tear.
I'm on the fence, depends on the refinement. The "starter" on these systems is beefed up, I don't see an issue with wear on that they way some people claim. For me it's about the operation, when some restart, it's very noticeable. Others hardly at all. I do enjoy the quiet while I'm waiting at the stoplight. Also it does seem silly to have an engine running when the car is just sitting there for a minute doing nothing.
Don't lilke where the brake lights and possible turn signals are placed at the lower corners of the vehicle. They easily could've integrated it with the taillights.
Buick is actually the oldest existing US car company (not only in the US, but in the world). Buick is the company from which GM evolved - it's founder was born in Scotland and the brand has a decent racing history as well. They were one of the first companies to have their motors used in mid-engine La Mans cars (predating Porsche, Ford and Ferrari). The 80's and 90's didn't do the brand any favors, but the new styling (thanks to foreign markets) is headed in the right direction. Buick has never capitalized on its history - and they really should. Full disclosure - Buick Regal TourX owner here :) ... and "Ja ja", I know it's built in Germany.
@@DrivenCarReviews We got the Essence in black with tinted windows. After 40,000 miles ... only one gripe with the car, and one bigger gripe with the dealer. The TourX was GREAT on a recent cross-country trip. Super quiet, comfortable and efficient (we averaged over 30mpg with 5 people and a wayback full of luggage), yet zippy around traffic. My nephew got his first speeding ticket in Nebraska ... he let his attention lapse and passed a state trooper doing over 90 (this is still the red-needle version that's limited at over 150mph). For the rest of his life, he can always say he got his first speeding ticket driving his aunt's Buick :D I am considering putting some tasteful aftermarket Ventiports on the fender - if I can find any that aren't too gaudy. Cheers Tom!
@@DrivenCarReviews I expect a Buick badged Blazer EV. Bolts are cool, but I rent and don't have power where I park, so faster charging is needed for the 30k and less price point
I'm in the older Buick demographic and have a 1989 Electra Park Avenue just for fun. An 1989 Electra can hit 0-60 in 11.4 seconds, where the Envista hits that in 9.4 seconds. A well equipped 1989 Electra stickered for about $20,000, which translates roughly to $48,000 in 2023 -- or about 40% more than the top of the line Envista Avenir. Put another way, a new base Envista, which retails for $24k, would have to sell for $15K if it were to match the relative entry price of a base 1989 Electra. Its power hatchback is arguably more relevant than the Electra's trunk lid pull-down ever could have been -- not to mention the Envista's safety kit and features -- airbags, thoroughly vetted body structure, anti-lock brakes, digital screens, greater cargo capacity (even with the seat up). Any sober comparison seems cruel and pointless... in just about every measure the Envista is the better car.
My 2018 Subaru Outback with Premium trim with the 2.5 L, 176 HP engine gets those fuel economy ratings on regular gas + WITH AWD and NO turbo to stress it. And it costs around the same price as this Buick.
Did you see the price of the Outback these days? Also, I sat in both, and Envista screams luxury while Outback screams rugged. It's definitely a different person who will buy an Outback; nothing wrong with that, but we'll go with the Envista or the Kia Seltos. Turbo is fine and gets long life; that's pretty much most of the motors in Europe now of that category.
I have had so many AWD barely ever need it, in my old 2011 Escape I almost never turned it on in the snow..it was great in the snow without turning it on. Four wheel drive is overrated
We went with a 2023 Mazda CX-5 Premium Plus (fully-loaded non-turbo). It was $30,000 with only 5k miles. Buick is underpowered, and I am not going to take that gamble with a 3-Cylinder GM. looks nice though
Another great review Tom thank you…..but can’t get past the three cylinder..I don’t see the longevity of this, out of warranty I would be worried. Would work for my daughter going to college…and return after lease…maybe
Maybe you don’t understand how seriously all auto makers take reliability these days. Typically they are tested under harsh conditions over millions of miles of simulated use. So I’m not so concerned about durability.
3 cylinders. 137 HP. Doesn't like to downshift, so the engine lugs. 0-60 in 9.4 "with careful brake torquing" [Motor Trend]. So, realistically, 10+ seconds. All they had to do, at this price point, was put some extra hamsters on the wheel, and it would have been worth looking at.
The turbo will wear your engine out, but probably will have to be replaced before that. The cvt is problematic too. What I've learned about Gov vehicles is they are generic and lack personality and above all resale value. Your better options are Mazda, honda, Subaru and Toyota. They are the best and resale the highest. If you like Johnny come latelies and problematic issues stick with the gov vehicles.
Great review Tom! The Buick is very stylish and a screaming value. However, I think that [at least] the Avenir trim should offer the Chinese market Envista's 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine and power driver seat.😊
Manufactures are all deadly serious about reliability these days. And when you have Toyota putting three cylinder engines in its cars, that says something to me.
@@DrivenCarReviews yea but I’m old school prob like you, the more spark plugs the better. I have a Honda Ridgeline with the proven naturally aspirated V6, with regular maintenance I’ll get 250K miles, will you get that with a 3 cylinder turbo, I don’t think so, just my .02 having 40 years of gear head experience, thanks Tom
It would cost as much as those people were guessing if it didn't have a pathetic 3 cylinder 2wd setup. You need to upgrade to the Encore GX to get awd but same basic engine, and it's smaller than this. I feel this could have been better served as a coupe-ified version of the Envision with that powertrain.
Can they not offer this with a better engine option? V4 at least lol and better infotainment/dash rear air conditioning? The avenue should really have all these options
Great video and a really good looking car but I have to agree with people concerned with the little 1.2 turbo and its long term reliability….especially in a cold weather climate. For me I will wait a few years to see if this engine can stand the test of time. My personal mechanic tells me the little engines boosted with a turbo are working very hard and just do not last long….but I have a 17 CRV with an 4 cyl. 1.5 turbo….100,000 miles….not one problem. It runs as good as the day I bought it….but that is a honda….GM has had a lot of quality control issues…. time will tell!
Yep! I have my 1.5 and so far now with 102,000 miles. Not that turbos is the way to go, but I will take a turbo from Honda and Toyota any day over a GM or Ford.
In China, the sales person will say; you deserve a Buick…. The Last Emperor owned one and Buick is a lux brand in China. GM made $ in China during it’s bankruptcy because of Buick.

The 3800 V6 is a fantastic motor. It gets 20 mpg in town and 30 on the highway.
Always great reviews!
If it just had a _little_ more power. Otherwise, kudos to GM for making an appealing, affordable economy car.
Your review is wonderful. Very polished and to the point. I am now subscribed.
way to go Buick
Great looks. SUCKY bumper brake lights. Gm is doing more of this…and it has to stop. Signals at the bumper are fine… but brake lights need to be more visable,
Tom Voelk is my favorite car reviewer
ST: 18”
Avenir: 19”
Both have less rubber between you and the road.
@@DrivenCarReviews good point, thanks for your reply!!🙂
Don't lilke where the brake lights and possible turn signals are placed at the lower corners of the vehicle. They easily could've integrated it with the taillights.
Hi, what is the exact color of the one you tested ?
Sunrise red
It’s the styling for me
This is a great looking new car. Wish they made it in USA
I get one I love it so far
Me too
Does anyone know the ground clearance? I am looking for a car that sits higher.
Combing the GM spec sheet, there's no info on that. Sorry. I'd guess 6 inches.
It does I like it
Buick is actually the oldest existing US car company (not only in the US, but in the world).
Love the TourX. Take care of that one.
Cheers Tom!
@@ivantuma7969 FYI, there are no tasteful ventiports.
@@DrivenCarReviews Maserati still begs to differ on that one ... right?
Put a Chevy Bolt drivetrain in this with 150kw charging for $30k and it would sell well
100% agree
Coming soon, probably next year. But with Ultium battery technology.
There you go using logic. Nobody does that anymore, haven't you heard?
Dad: I bought a new Envista!
Teen Son: let’s swap in the 455.4 from your old Estate Wagon.
My 2018 Subaru Outback with Premium trim with the 2.5 L, 176 HP engine gets those fuel economy ratings on regular gas + WITH AWD and NO turbo to stress it. And it costs around the same price as this Buick.
Haha not a new outback.
@@potatochobit When mine was new, Premium Trim, was $30,000.00.
You can plug in a little usb fan in the back.
Handsome looking machine; pity it's missing AWD.
I have had so many AWD barely ever need it, in my old 2011 Escape I almost never turned it on in the snow..it was great in the snow without turning it on. Four wheel drive is overrated
Do you see any plans for a PHEV?
No
I have a feeling this will overheat
At this price, Grandma and Grandpa, living on fixed incomes, will still want to test drive this Buick.
Or young people just getting started. It was mostly them that wanted to know about the car.
The front of this car looks like a Lambo Urus
Is this produced in Asia like other Buicks?
We went with a 2023 Mazda CX-5 Premium Plus (fully-loaded non-turbo).
It was $30,000 with only 5k miles.
Buick is underpowered, and I am not going to take that gamble with a 3-Cylinder GM. looks nice though
Cx5 is just better in almost every category. Mazda always spoils with the amount of tech you get
If you can for go the ‘leather’ a base model is $24k, throw in 2 common packages and it’s $26k.
Needs to be a 40 mpg hybrid it would be excellent
Another great review Tom thank you…..but can’t get past the three cylinder..I don’t see the longevity of this, out of warranty I would be worried. Would work for my daughter going to college…and return after lease…maybe
Maybe you don’t understand how seriously all auto makers take reliability these days. Typically they are tested under harsh conditions over millions of miles of simulated use. So I’m not so concerned about durability.
Great video. Is it built in China?
Nope
On hills, you can always use the “manual shift” and go down a gear. I mean, it is equipped with it by design.
Your year's supply of toilet paper?LOL. It seems like a nice ride, might be missing a few things but over all an excellent value.
Ever think it’ll come with a AWD version?
No
3 cylinders.
137 HP.
Doesn't like to downshift, so the engine lugs.
0-60 in 9.4 "with careful brake torquing" [Motor Trend]. So, realistically, 10+ seconds.
All they had to do, at this price point, was put some extra hamsters on the wheel, and it would have been worth looking at.
we will have to wait a year to c if you can live with this motorcycle engine in a car. maybe...
I test-drove the Chevy Trax - I believe it has the same engine. It did 0-60 in 7.5 seconds.
Not according to media, which says 9.3. Or perhaps you were driving down a mountain?@@careyivery6656
@@careyivery6656were you perhaps driving off a cliff? 😂
lol, no cliffs in South Florida. But I'm just a guy with an iPhone what do I know?@@slscamg
Seems like such a small step up from Chevy on the interior. Exterior looks are really nice, but so is the refreshed Trax.
Why is Beewick still in business?
The turbo will wear your engine out, but probably will have to be replaced before that. The cvt is problematic too. What I've learned about Gov vehicles is they are generic and lack personality and above all resale value.
Your better options are Mazda, honda, Subaru and Toyota. They are the best and resale the highest.
If you like Johnny come latelies and problematic issues stick with the gov vehicles.
Do any Buicks get Super Cruise?
Envision does. Rumor is the Enclave gets it next year.
Great review Tom! The Buick is very stylish and a screaming value. However, I think that [at least] the Avenir trim should offer the Chinese market Envista's 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine and power driver seat.😊
My only question would be the 3 cylinder engine’s longevity, only time will tell.
You shouldn’t care what other people think. They’re not paying the car note.
Mileage is poor. A shame there's no hybrid/PHEV version. It would cost more but be worth it.
Fuel economy is average for the segment.
Pretty solid for the price
Can they not offer this with a better engine option? V4 at least lol and better infotainment/dash rear air conditioning? The avenue should really have all these options
Budget Lamborghini Urus
Wish they bring in the 2.0T (9AT) 48V mild hybrid version ❤❤❤
if this came with a v6 i'd possibly buy one
Great video and a really good looking car but I have to agree with people concerned with the little 1.2 turbo and its long term reliability….especially in a cold weather climate. For me I will wait a few years to see if this engine can stand the test of time. My personal mechanic tells me the little engines boosted with a turbo are working very hard and just do not last long….but I have a 17 CRV with an 4 cyl. 1.5 turbo….100,000 miles….not one problem. It runs as good as the day I bought it….but that is a honda….GM has had a lot of quality control issues…. time will tell!
Have you researched Honda turbo engine issues?
Yep! I have my 1.5 and so far now with 102,000 miles. Not that turbos is the way to go, but I will take a turbo from Honda and Toyota any day over a GM or Ford.
Buick has great values across their lineup. They just have a marketing hurdle to overcome because they are viewed as being for old people.
That’s true across the entire general motors lineup. That company can’t market itself out of a paper bag. Too bad, it makes some really good products.
Very nice. ❤
Got my mom one and she loves it. She said the butt reminds her of a x6 😂 (her dream car)
I gotta say, to me this little Buick looks better than the X6. 🙂
Wow! Physical HVAC controls
In China, the sales person will say; you deserve a Buick…. The Last Emperor owned one and Buick is a lux brand in China. GM made $ in China during it’s bankruptcy because of Buick.
Hello, My name is Annie Li, and I love your video style! I wrote you a letter. Did you get it?
Can you speak to Buik's recent quality issues? Do you feel like the quality will hold up long term?
Not Envista specifically. Buick has constantly scored well on JD Power rankings for years.
