The genius of Heroquest is that you can explain the rules to anyone and be playing within a couple of minutes. Yes, there are more complex and tactical games out there, but that counts for nothing if no-one wants to spend hours learning the rules.
I have been playing Heroquest since the 90's. I tried other games to include Descent, Imperial Assault, Mice Mystic and even Gloomhaven just to mention a few. I always come back to Heroquest. I have the original version and between the original and the Haslab one I made my own with my own figures and cards. Long Live Heroquest LOL
Great comparison of the two dungeon crawlers. I owned Descent for a while and have always found it a bit too involved breaking it out for quick night of gaming. HeroQuest, quick pick it up and play, serves that purpose much better, especially with the app. They both have their strong points and both are great games. Doesn't hurt to own both IMHO.
Hey...I like this video because that's a unique comparison and both are games I wanted. I DID end up finally biting the bullet and going with HeroQuest. Nostalgia....more plastic pieces....ability to homebrew it up....maybe talk more people into playing it. Great review. I also like Legend of Drizzt a whole lot. And Dungeon! And honestly Tiny Epic Dungeons is a real fun solo game for me but damn it takes a lot of table.
Descent 2nd ed was my first board game! Love it. I've ben experimenting with other board games and wargames since. Just bought the new ed of HeroQuest to play with my little nieces, as an intro to board games.
The thing about heroquest it's best for younger players 11 years upwards to play with family members. Its quick to learn rules and the high quality accessories really draw in the young ones imagination. It's great.
I have to say I love playing both games. My son plays both with me. My wife loves playing heroquest with my son and I. My family and I are never bord with the stories in the quests in either game. Both the 2021 heroquest or Descent would be great picks.
It's funny that HeroQuest is now regularly $80-90 on Amazon and is still an open-ended box of ongoing adventure, with numerous expansions, while Descent has a new edition which is essentially cardboard and plastic driven by an app. An app which will only exist as long as the developers support it.
I agree with some stuff but Descent differs greatly from HeroQuest, Descent is not a dungeon crawl, is a turn base action management hero strategy game. 2 greens and 1 red on an attack is wrong, almost all attacks have a blue dice. Also the best part of HeroQuest is the BrodSword. I own the 1990 HeroQuest and Descent first edition (actual dungeon crawl) and second edition.
I've played both. (At least the base game campaigns) I feel the story is better in Descent as well as the overall mechanics Plus modular tiles vs. A set dimension board has more merit for expanding your game. As for asthetic appeal, I like Heroquest better and the missions are better balanced.
The problem I have with every other dungeon crawler games beside Hero Quest are their modular parts for the board, I hate it so much and it hardly adds more possibilities.
I've played Descent once after being invited by my Pathfinder RPG group. I didn't enjoy it at all. I felt it was overly complex and an actual RPG would have been easier and more fun for me. I also played Imperial Assault, which I found even more obtuse, complicated, and pointless than Descent! I played "Dark Tower" back in the day and remember enjoying that.
Descent is definitely not for everyone,. I have played it a few times, but not as often as I played heroquest. FFG definitely wanted to make a more involved experience. For better or worse.
Heroquest is a game outdated in practically every aspect, no matter this new re-release. Descent is clearly superior: it has a modular and flexible tile system compared to the reconfigurable board, two game modes (competitive and cooperative with the app), it is less expensive, it is a much more technical and tactical game and has tons of expansions that give it a lot of logevity. The only good thing about Heroquest is the fact that its elements and miniatures could be used for Advanced Heroquest, one of the most innovative DCs in history. Despite itself, Heroquest has produced a whole series of solutions and inventions that have then found development in further games including also Descent. Although you don't love Heroquest, its return is positive, as it brings back some elements such as furniture that were lost in modern games.

Man I gave away my original copy of Heroquest in about 2005 after years of sitting in my cupboard unloved. Boy I regreat that now!!!
Just found your channel. I dig the vibe my brotha!

Great review.. have you changed that mic 🎤 since? Really makes you wince 😣
Really great video explaining the differences for those of us...believe it or not...that never got to play the original Hero Quest.
Thank you for that, they are both fun but definitely very different games.

A Pathfinder player finds it overly complex says a lot

The Enterprise would win of course
Sorry, but interested though I may be, you need a better microphone! The cracking is making my head hurt :(
Descent is broken when using the app as Zargon! The barbarian just blocks the doorway and kills all the monsters!
Rinse and repeat….
