About the price tag, it should be noted that $40 in 1989 when accounting for inflation is just short of $100 today - it was not exactly a cheap game back then either
I was lucky my best friend was always good at earning/saving money so he was often able to buy cool stuff. He had Hero Quest AND Battle Masters when we were kids. Great memories.

It was a HasbroPlus Kickstarter that raked in almost 4 million dollars. It has 2 exclusive figures, but they have already released the 2 expansions and will be releasing more expansions in the future.
It has a lot more than just two exclusive figures. The Mythic tier came with an additional 3 quest books, a new Dragon miniature, alternate male and female versions of the heroes, over a dozen alternate monsters sculpts, an extra set of dice...etc.
I had the original Hero Quest as a kid! I never really played the game much, but I used the figures and furniture for all sorts of stuff, from playing out my own little adventures, to decorating my D&D adventures. We moved a lot as a kid, and that cardboard box got beat all to hell. I think it lasted 15 years? Of constant moving, being dragged to friends' houses, going to my Grandma's for vacation, etc. I still have a few of the figures, but most of it is gone. I'm really tempted to buy the new one, even though I still probably won't play it much as intended.

I remember the original wooden dice being doubleshot with differently colored wood, so no wearing off of the ink. But perhaps my European version was different to the American one in this regard.
I remember getting it the year it came out for my 10 year old birthday and couldn’t wait to play and my brother, sister, mom, and dad selected their characters and my dad threw a fit because he didn’t want to be the “wimpy elf who will instantly get killed” he held strong and refused to play until my brother gave up the barbarian. My father wasn’t a board game player and I can still remember it. I loved this game and currently I’m playing Oathsworn which feels like the pinnacle of the game type evolution
this game was my child hood :') i remember the day my brother bought it from an opshop and it had missing pieces so we took pieces from other board games and even made custom maps ill never forget using the orc slayer in one of the last quests against a wave of orcs while my friend was taking on the last boss simpler times i miss them.
This is both nostalgic and depressing; I had the original game and all expansions that were, long ago, borrowed and never returned. It has been some decades and I cannot even remember who borrowed them... sad times! 😒 I love that there has been a remake so that it is still available for younger generations to enjoy, although the Chaos Warrior was always my favorite figure. 🙄
Captain, this brings back some very fond memories. A friend of mine (who I still play DnD with) received this game for Christmas in ‘90. We played the heck out of it and used the minis as pieces for regular DnD play. To this day we still say “checking for traps” and the Dread (Chaos) Mage is the quintessential BBEG figurine. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I’ll be sharing this one with my group for maximum nostalgia.
I have 2 copies of the Original mine which i painted my mini's and played it to death and my best mates untouched almost brand new set he gave to me. This brings back so many memories, i also have Dark World still in the box. :)
I loved Hero Quest as a kid. Battle Masters too! They were sold at a yard sale at some point, and then, when I became a young adult I eventually rebought both games on Ebay. This new release looks pretty neat...I guess they've changed "Chaos" to "Dread" and the Fimirs to the Deep One things due to licensing (Chaos and Fimir are both Games Workshop things) - but I liked the cool Games Workshop flavor of the old stuff. I remember growing up and then as a middle schooler discovering Warhammer, and then seeing the Warhammer fantasy stuff and realizing Hero Quest was connected - that was really cool!
Fimir are a Celtic Myth thing. iirc, they're pretty rapey, which is why GW were never too keen to push them - and may also be why they were sidelined for this one.
I had Battle Masters as well! That game was great. Its probably somewhere in my dads attic actually, Hero Quest and that was definitely a gateway into warhammer for me
Nice comparison video. I would offer some constructive criticism, if you don’t mind. I’m someone who is unfamiliar with both versions of the game, so when you compared minis/cards side-by-side, I couldn’t always tell which was which. Perhaps you could always put the one version on the same side to avoid confusion. Just a thought. Keep making videos!
I always remember this game. My cousins got it when we were kids and we never understood how to play it. I, at least, never got into RPGs so I had no experience nor will to get into anything like that.
Best thing is when you own the old and the new version you at least can mix and match the minatures. Double the Heroes and the Enemies, double the fun!
OMG I had the old one when I was a kid! I had also found and been playing D&D at the same time. I eventually got into boards and minis thanks to Hero Quest.
A buddy of mine bought the original back in the day , we played the heck outta it, even bought the expansions. Loved this game, as well the boardgame, DRAGONSTRIKE. Great video, Great memories, thank you 👍
the app is great and being compatible with the original is great. Once you open the box throw in the trash the bard and the druid you are ready to go :D
Agreed. Not a fan of those new characters, they are all poorly thought out and seem out of place. Orcs are evil monsters, not musicians. The warlock's game mechanics are broken, and a plant-controlling druid does not fit into the HeroQuest environment of an enclosed dungeon labyrinth.
I could only dream of a reedition of Legend of Zagore, using an app or something like that, or just better robust electronics for Zagore. That game had cool exploration (tho too many pieces), cool figurines and a decent amount of backstabbing between players.
I was just a convention where someone brought a near perfect complete 89 release for sale, probably could have gotten cheaper online but after shipping and taxes if any, would have cost the same. I have 4 of the original sets of this & every expansion (2 sets & additional duplicate expansions were from a buddy who gave them to me). I used to have even more, but sold/gave away a bunch years ago. Why I had so many? Toys 'R Us put them on clearance for $10 per set at one point in the early 90s & I bought 10(!!) of them purely for the minis as I wanted a Fimir army in Warhammer. The prices on the Barbarian & Elf Quest packs have gotten completely ridiculous!
So , do you wish to sell anything/sets at a fair price or trade? Not seeing you on BGG. HQ(new) can fairly be found at about $100, do you want to sell any of those expanded versions? Regards
Hero Quest was a great introduction game to RPGs and Dungeon Crawling. It gave young kids in the 1990s a chance to explore the fantasy realm of Warhammer or D&D and Tolkens Middle Earth. Who could forget naming their Barbarian either Connan or Barbie? Or rollong poorly wiy the insufferable wooden combat dices (skulls when saving and sheilds when attacking) Looking back it was a visually great looking game but also had poor game play.
I refined my barbarian first day I had it back in day ... sharpened his sword with a craft knife. Went to far made a dagger out of sword and buried knife in my 12 year old finger...off to hospital. I bled for this game just ordered the new un. Play with my 12 year old no refining . .great review, feel like kid at Christmas waiting for it now got a sub
I got this game when I was in high school. I had played dungeons and dragons and similar games before getting this. I always felt like it was dungeons and dragons for people who didn’t have 6 to 8 hours to play a board game. I used to play with my brother and my cousin and we would squeeze in 3 or 4 solid fun games inside of two hours.
Hello and thank you for this video. I still have my old box. Its condition is impeccable, for its venerable age (1989). She will be enough for me. That being said, I suppose that this reissue also serves to calm the price inflation of the first edition, which has become almost unobtainable here in Europe. The complete range in "relatively good condition" sold for nearly €700. While waiting for new videos, I wish you good games and dice 20 per thousand!
I have the original and the new (obviously). I never got any of the other expansions (the Ogre expansion for example), so my hope is a lot of the really obscure releases (and ridiculous on ebay to buy) will get new life.
I really loved this game as a kid, and created so many custom maps of my own. I saw this in GameStop when I was there with my kids and enjoyed telling them about this game. I didn't buy the new one because $140 is just not priced correctly. Yes, it actually is just a little bit of a price grab.
The brazilian version I had in the 90s didn´t have plastic miniatures. They were cardboard. The positive side is that they were colored, exactly like the drawings in the cover.
Gamestop is/was doing a sale this year. Buy 2 get 1 free. Hero quest was on the sale, so I picked up 3 copies (for gifts to various households). Total price per copy came to $66. Not a bad sale for such a treasure.
This game along with all the expansions and my unused copy of Epic Spacemarines boxed set were all thrown out by Mother while I was overseas, the basement flooded more than 4ft deep and all of my gaming stuff was ruined. Let's just say to this day 35 years later I still get choked up a bit knowing the value the old sets hold today.
I prefer the old version. There is something just too "cartoony" about the new ones. I also have some umbridge about the size difference... I felt like it was so that the new expansions are not compatible with the old board - meaning you HAVE to buy the new board as well.
Well, so long for alien looking elves. I mean most elves in 80’s and 90’s had elongated face with alien eyes while recent ones being “humans with pointy ears” (Elderscrolls being exceptions).
This was totally fun to see again. Yes, I had this one growing up and yes I played as much as I could with friends. But, it didn't last and I put it on the shelf when I learned about BBS's and "on-line" ANSI games like Tradewars 2002 and other ANSI puzzle games like ZZT. Since I left it on a shelf at my Mom's house I forgot all about it until now. I'm back in the same house but where is my game? It was on a shelf in the garage and it survived in near perfect condition. I've been playing table top games with friends and their kids for the past few years. Guess the next game i'm going to suggest?
The one problem is that the dread warrior has a shield. thematically for an evil warrior this seems wrong. The original chaos warriors with axes and balled fists fit the idea a bit better
I got this for Christmas in 1992. We had the UK version in Australia. I bought all 3 expansions (Witch King, Kellar's Keep, Against The Ogre Horde) with Witch King and Keep priced at $20-30au (one I bought on special) and Ogre Hoard about $40au. The new price converted to $au will be well north of $150au and the expansions close to $50au but I'd have to see how much local stores sell for or if I am forced to import it. Yeah, it costs more but like many nostalgia toys the price is hiked up as the real target is nostalgic adults with cash to burn. Still, it is cheaper than games like Magic: The Gathering and Warhammer 40k. Seems comparable to starting packs for Battletech currently and you get a lot more game for your money.
Here in the US, its about $110 for the main game and $30 for the witch king and Kellar's keep, and $49 for against the Ogre Horde and Magic Mirrior. To my mind, these aren't bad prices, given the cost of the originals in the 90s
@@captcorajus I looked up local pricing and it is all around $200au for the main game (give or take $10-20) and the expansions are all priced around $100au. This isn't really unexpected and it translates to more than $US value in $au but we have to import just about everything fun like this so shipping adds a lot even when sold locally. Back in the 90s you could buy Hero Quest stuff in mainstream toy stores in Australia so it made a difference. Now it is all hobby and gaming stores.
I had this game as a kid and lost it. I also had the Return of the Witch Lord Expansion. All that we have now is the box for Return of Witch Lord and the plastic figures. The actual game box disappeared. If I didn't already have Frosthaven and Gloomhaven, I might consider the new HQ. I just don't have shelf space.
Finally snagged it Avalon hills base game is 59.99 now GameStop and Amazon. I lost my original sadly, but still have the barbarian expansion set...which apparently is crazy rare
Hi, thanks for the great comparison. I used to play the OG in the early 90s at a relative's place, and pulled the trigger on the new version this year. It is really very well produced, the miniatures are super detailed and lovingly crafted, as you noted. I also like that both the heroes and the villains have female individuals, which is a perfect sign that the game has accomplished the time travel to the 2020's. I also enjoy playing solo "against" the app, which really manages to strike the balance between board game and video game feeling. On top of "being" Zargon, the app provides are great soundtrack and narrative background. Over here in Europe, the game is priced between 80 (black week) and 120 Euros. As you say, not cheap, but you get a lot of well designed and beautifully crafted entertainment for self, family and / or friends. Two thumbs up from me.
It is a lovely comparison. One constructive criticism: when making a comparison between two games, keep the positioning the same for all the screenshots (i.e. new game on the left/top, old game on the right/bottom). This avoids to the viewer eyes to have to wander around and have to identify what is what. For the rest, very well done
I bought it new on eBay with shipping for 99.99, played it a few times when I was 11 and have fond memories of it. Can’t wait to use the app for solo and group gameplay plus the expansions wich I never played.

In New Zealand the release was $400 + It's still selling at $370 in 2023!
I loved me some heroes quest when i was a kid. Havent played that game in forever
Thanks for doing this. I had the original but sold it. Originals are very expensive in NZ.
Would have loved ❤ to do all the graphic works for this release!
We owned this, played it once and went back to SMB 3. Cool figurines though.
I really loved this game as a kid, and created so many custom maps of my own. I saw this in GameStop when I was there with my kids and enjoyed telling them about this game. I didn't buy the new one because $140 is just not priced correctly. Yes, it actually is just a little bit of a price grab.
BIG fan of hero quest! Been wondering about the differences. Thanks for explaining.
loved playing the game on the zx spectrum. The music was iconic.
The best part about Heroquest is the board...it's cracking!
Fuuuuck. Sorry bud.
I still have the original game. Somewhere in attic. Hopefully.
We played this and Dragon Strike a lot as a kid, as well as mutant chronicles.
I prefer the old version. There is something just too "cartoony" about the new ones. I also have some umbridge about the size difference... I felt like it was so that the new expansions are not compatible with the old board - meaning you HAVE to buy the new board as well.
In comparison to modern dungeon crawling games, HeroQuest is very simple
Well, so long for alien looking elves.
I mean most elves in 80’s and 90’s had elongated face with alien eyes while recent ones being “humans with pointy ears” (Elderscrolls being exceptions).
you played the CRPG divinity 2? I was happy to see they brought back WEIRD ELVES.
My friend and I managed to find this in a thrift store around 1998 for 10 bad bones.
I still have my original we got back in 1989!
Now it is all hobby and gaming stores.
i had this when i was a kid. I remember liking it
Still have the original game from 80"s. But have not played it after that
I had this game as a kid and lost it. I also had the Return of the Witch Lord Expansion. All that we have now is the box for Return of Witch Lord and the plastic figures. The actual game box disappeared. If I didn't already have Frosthaven and Gloomhaven, I might consider the new HQ. I just don't have shelf space.
Thanks man for a superinteresting and helpful video!
I have to get this! Great review! Thank you!
Finally snagged it Avalon hills base game is 59.99 now GameStop and Amazon. I lost my original sadly, but still have the barbarian expansion set...which apparently is crazy rare
I miss my (very incomplete secondhand) hero quest set
... I used to think Mentor was like... a play on mental, because he had a big mind. .-.
Just ordered from net for 49! Sale on
It is a lovely comparison.
One constructive criticism: when making a comparison between two games, keep the positioning the same for all the screenshots (i.e. new game on the left/top, old game on the right/bottom).
This avoids to the viewer eyes to have to wander around and have to identify what is what.
For the rest, very well done
Still got the one I bought for my son knocking around somewhere!
I bought it new on eBay with shipping for 99.99, played it a few times when I was 11 and have fond memories of it. Can’t wait to use the app for solo and group gameplay plus the expansions wich I never played.
Excellent video comparison I'm going to get this one 👍 🎲😎
The difference is one is widely available today while the other is no longer in print.
Also a big factor! lol
Had the original. Didn't know how to play. Was too young. The ad got me haha. Wish I still had. It didn't survive. Want the new one now
Best thing sbout this game... It was "fast" roleplay action game... And endlessly chances to make tose different maps 💪💪👍👍 best board game
Thanks! I just dusted off my 1989 version I played once if that and was wondering the difference between the old version and the new version.
