About the price tag, it should be noted that $40 in 1989 when accounting for inflation is just short of $100 today - it was not exactly a cheap game back then either

Captain, this brings back some very fond memories. A friend of mine (who I still play DnD with) received this game for Christmas in ‘90. We played the heck out of it and used the minis as pieces for regular DnD play. To this day we still say “checking for traps” and the Dread (Chaos) Mage is the quintessential BBEG figurine. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I’ll be sharing this one with my group for maximum nostalgia.
1989>2021 ; still glad that its been remade for another generation regardless , such a wonderful game ; also everyone deserves to know 'the best thing about heroquest' ; honestly impressed by the 2021 version quality
This was my childhood.. I have 3 copies of the game. My original still from 1989 , A 1990 euro version...and another almost brand new copy from 1990... Now im going to order the 2021 version.
this game was my child hood :') i remember the day my brother bought it from an opshop and it had missing pieces so we took pieces from other board games and even made custom maps ill never forget using the orc slayer in one of the last quests against a wave of orcs while my friend was taking on the last boss simpler times i miss them.
I loved Hero Quest as a kid. Battle Masters too! They were sold at a yard sale at some point, and then, when I became a young adult I eventually rebought both games on Ebay. This new release looks pretty neat...I guess they've changed "Chaos" to "Dread" and the Fimirs to the Deep One things due to licensing (Chaos and Fimir are both Games Workshop things) - but I liked the cool Games Workshop flavor of the old stuff. I remember growing up and then as a middle schooler discovering Warhammer, and then seeing the Warhammer fantasy stuff and realizing Hero Quest was connected - that was really cool!
Fimir are a Celtic Myth thing. iirc, they're pretty rapey, which is why GW were never too keen to push them - and may also be why they were sidelined for this one.
I had Battle Masters as well! That game was great. Its probably somewhere in my dads attic actually, Hero Quest and that was definitely a gateway into warhammer for me
40$ might be about 96$ today's money thanks to inflation. The price difference isn't really much there, if anything you get all the extra detail and material quality for 20$ extra.
I have 4 of the original sets of this & every expansion (2 sets & additional duplicate expansions were from a buddy who gave them to me). I used to have even more, but sold/gave away a bunch years ago. Why I had so many? Toys 'R Us put them on clearance for $10 per set at one point in the early 90s & I bought 10(!!) of them purely for the minis as I wanted a Fimir army in Warhammer. The prices on the Barbarian & Elf Quest packs have gotten completely ridiculous!
So , do you wish to sell anything/sets at a fair price or trade? Not seeing you on BGG. HQ(new) can fairly be found at about $100, do you want to sell any of those expanded versions? Regards
This is both nostalgic and depressing; I had the original game and all expansions that were, long ago, borrowed and never returned. It has been some decades and I cannot even remember who borrowed them... sad times! 😒 I love that there has been a remake so that it is still available for younger generations to enjoy, although the Chaos Warrior was always my favorite figure. 🙄
I want this game and its extensions. I have been saving for battletech kickstarter in march 2023 so at the moment I have my money committed. But you left me drooling, wanting to buy this game. If God wants me to have it, there will be othing that will prevent me from buy it. Else, I will not. Let's see what happens.
I have the very first one when it came out The one from 1989 and I still haven't this very day and I'm about 50 years old it's in my closet and I don't know what to do with the games and stuff right now I still have the game of life and all kind of games and stuff like that so it just gathering dust I'm going to give the stuff away to someone that really want to play these games
I could only dream of a reedition of Legend of Zagore, using an app or something like that, or just better robust electronics for Zagore. That game had cool exploration (tho too many pieces), cool figurines and a decent amount of backstabbing between players.
You keep saying "original", but you are not using the original at all, just the American localization, that has slightly different rules and some different names. Remember: the original Hero Quest is a BRITISH game ! I will add this to the "US vs. metric" feud: -- USA : "Zargon" -- rest of the World : "Morcar" ;)
Well, given that I'm from the US, I only have access to the US version, so for me, its still the 'the Original'. lol. But yeah, the Brits had the game first. :)
As regards the fimir,, I know that the new version had to replace figure for copyright purposes, but choosing a wholly thematically and canonically different figure, such as this Lovecraftian thingy, seems an odd choice and it kind of sticks out like a sore thumb from a thematic and lore perspective. The problem is that the Abomination creates an issue by being a “category of one” as opposed to fitting into the original game’s three rough categories (as indicated by the colours of the plastic): - The greenskins (goblins, orcs and fimirs) - The undead (skeletons, zombies and mummies) - The forces of chaos (chaos warriors, the gargoyle and the witch/warlock) Personally, I think that the Abomination would’ve fit better into a Lovecraftian horror styled expansion where it could get some “companions” of a similar flavour, while the Fimir would probably have been better replaced by something more “greenskin’ish” that, thematically, could serve as a “chief” for the orcs and goblins, like a troll, an ogre, a giant or something along those lines.
Admittedly I think I'd be looking at replacing the abomination with a more fitting miniature from another company. I completely agree that thematically the new one clashes.
Well, so long for alien looking elves. I mean most elves in 80’s and 90’s had elongated face with alien eyes while recent ones being “humans with pointy ears” (Elderscrolls being exceptions).
I was just a convention where someone brought a near perfect complete 89 release for sale, probably could have gotten cheaper online but after shipping and taxes if any, would have cost the same. Regardless it was a timed sale event and others were eyeing it up, I eventually just went for it since I haven't seen the physic89 version in 30 years when I was a kid and ruined my brother's copy and the feels of seeing that old artwork. ❤❤❤❤ 😢
I remember getting it the year it came out for my 10 year old birthday and couldn’t wait to play and my brother, sister, mom, and dad selected their characters and my dad threw a fit because he didn’t want to be the “wimpy elf who will instantly get killed” he held strong and refused to play until my brother gave up the barbarian. My father wasn’t a board game player and I can still remember it. I loved this game and currently I’m playing Oathsworn which feels like the pinnacle of the game type evolution
I love the overall content here, but I feel like you should probably be a little more consistent. If you were going to have the new version on the right hand side of our screen, that should’ve been there the whole time when you’re switching between cards and boards, and dice, and all that, it becomes hard to realize which one’s the new versus the old in some cases. Yes, people could use context, clues and quality but why make them even try
I remember playing the original as a kid! I think parts of it might still be around. Anyhow, does the app allow one to play solo with the new game...? I might have to look into getting the new version if it does.
It does, but I wouldn't want to play with a full party of heroes that way. However, I did have a blast over the holidays playing the Elf solo quests from Mage in the Mirror using the app.
It is a lovely comparison. One constructive criticism: when making a comparison between two games, keep the positioning the same for all the screenshots (i.e. new game on the left/top, old game on the right/bottom). This avoids to the viewer eyes to have to wander around and have to identify what is what. For the rest, very well done
I had the original as a kid and I don't think my friends and I ever played totally "right." Now that I am an adult, and can read, I'm looking forward to getting together with friends to play. I have a sealed Game System (not an original, of course), but I hate to open it. So, I just bought another one that I plan to open and start playing with friends soon. Anyone have any thoughts on the various expansion packs?
I backed the preorder it whatever Hasbro called it. I thought the female orcs and Orc bard it came with was pretty stupid, but I like the rest of the game. I’m going to play it with my kids while the original w/expansions sits on my shelf (next to Warhammer Quest, Battle masters, Dragon Strike and Advanced HeroQuest). Is it too much to hope they remake Battle Masters too?
Oh mawje not homaje :P. I love this type of content man. Truly, thanks for the effort people like you keep me coming to youtube despite what a garbage pit it's become over the years
My daughter’s still a bit too young for this - only 5, but hey, that gives me plenty of time to save up the cash for that price tag! For that much money she’d better like it!
The one problem is that the dread warrior has a shield. thematically for an evil warrior this seems wrong. The original chaos warriors with axes and balled fists fit the idea a bit better
Gamestop is/was doing a sale this year. Buy 2 get 1 free. Hero quest was on the sale, so I picked up 3 copies (for gifts to various households). Total price per copy came to $66. Not a bad sale for such a treasure.
I believe the variation between races can be explained in Hero Quest terms: Black people have superior physicality and strength like the Barbarian, White people have a good balance of everything like the Elf. Asians have poor strength yet are smart like the Wizard. Jews can be equated as the "Gamemaster" LOL. Obviously there's a lot of variation between, within each race, with white people being the most heterogeneous, as such contains the most variation, which can range from the extremes of Barbarian to Wizard, or a combination of both.
I have 2 copies of the Original mine which i painted my mini's and played it to death and my best mates untouched almost brand new set he gave to me. This brings back so many memories, i also have Dark World still in the box. :)
I always remember this game. My cousins got it when we were kids and we never understood how to play it. I, at least, never got into RPGs so I had no experience nor will to get into anything like that.
OMG I had the old one when I was a kid! I had also found and been playing D&D at the same time. I eventually got into boards and minis thanks to Hero Quest.
The original art was way better and more adult-fantasy style, which as a kid provoked emotions in me, and made the game so much more real and scary. They only changed it to appeal to the new generation of anime-loving kids, which is a shame for them.
About the price tag, it should be noted that $40 in 1989 when accounting for inflation is just short of $100 today - it was not exactly a cheap game back then either

@@davesaylor7829 yes sir.salvation and good well priceses is rediclies prices now.there rare to find in theft store
My cousin did the same on custom maps with the mini's! For the D&D. I was only 7 when i started playing but I still remember it to this day !
1989>2021 ; still glad that its been remade for another generation regardless , such a wonderful game ; also everyone deserves to know 'the best thing about heroquest' ; honestly impressed by the 2021 version quality
I played Hero Quest as a kid in the 90s
This was my childhood.. I have 3 copies of the game. My original still from 1989 , A 1990 euro version...and another almost brand new copy from 1990... Now im going to order the 2021 version.
Don’t forget the brodesode
Thanks for posting this! Local gaming store just got these in!
Its pretty darn cool. The video will give you a pretty clear idea of the differences.
Did you say Zargon? Like the guy in the Lost City.
Yes. Same spelling
Was such a good game. With all the characters and enemies and furnitures. It made it really fun seeing all these pieces on the board.
this game was my child hood :') i remember the day my brother bought it from an opshop and it had missing pieces so we took pieces from other board games and even made custom maps ill never forget using the orc slayer in one of the last quests against a wave of orcs while my friend was taking on the last boss simpler times i miss them.
New Barb looks cool, look at the muscularity!
Bah! Purely for beginners. He is in fact 'easy mode'. TRUE aficionados of the game play the Dwarf!
Its probably somewhere in my dads attic actually, Hero Quest and that was definitely a gateway into warhammer for me
If they have the rights to the original game, surely, they should be able to re-use the unit naming without legal issue?
Copyright law sucks.
Great Review Cap, think I'll go buy this and get my boys into the hobby.
Regards
He’s a game hoarder.. probably rob you blind
yeah but the Barbarian lost a lot of his "MASCULARITYYY".... and what about the Gargoyle? Arguably the best thing about Hero Quest?
I had the original, then space crusade, when it came out. Gateway drugs...
This is both nostalgic and depressing; I had the original game and all expansions that were, long ago, borrowed and never returned. It has been some decades and I cannot even remember who borrowed them... sad times! 😒
I love that there has been a remake so that it is still available for younger generations to enjoy, although the Chaos Warrior was always my favorite figure. 🙄
I owned this as a kid, don't know what happened to it unfortunatly. Saw it recently at my local boardgame store, it was price at 225$ canadian 😬
Best thing sbout this game... It was "fast" roleplay action game... And endlessly chances to make tose different maps 💪💪👍👍 best board game
I love the original HeroQuest and I wish I had the new HeroQuest.
I didn’t know this happened. I have the complete original and quest packs plus extras Got to get this now
I had this game but never got to play it. I'm still not sure if I have someone to play it with me. Darn it.
What's considered the better game, HeroQuest? Or Dragon Strike?
In comparison to modern dungeon crawling games, HeroQuest is very simple
what no BardicBroadcasts Cameo, how we meant to know the best thing about heroquest?
THE BEST THING ABOUT HEROQUEST IS MORE HEROQUEST!
Browd Sowd!
I could only dream of a reedition of Legend of Zagore, using an app or something like that, or just better robust electronics for Zagore. That game had cool exploration (tho too many pieces), cool figurines and a decent amount of backstabbing between players.
Thanks for highlighting the app. Did not know there was an app.
I used to own 3 copies of the original version. Never should have sold them.
My friend and I managed to find this in a thrift store around 1998 for 10 bad bones.
I have the original. I even did videos on it.
thanks for the great video!
well yes a look in to and seen minis i liked on Esty a must to bling em out you see em your self if like to you have great holday
The best part about Heroquest is the board...it's cracking!
Still have the original game from 80"s. But have not played it after that
Oh, i wanted this since i was a little kid. But i didn't speak any languages at that time and it wasn't even sold in my country.
The best thing about HeroQuest is Advanced HeroQuest.
You keep saying "original", but you are not using the original at all, just the American localization, that has slightly different rules and some different names. Remember: the original Hero Quest is a BRITISH game !
I will add this to the "US vs. metric" feud:
-- USA : "Zargon"
-- rest of the World : "Morcar"
;)
Well, given that I'm from the US, I only have access to the US version, so for me, its still the 'the Original'. lol.
But yeah, the Brits had the game first. :)
As regards the fimir,, I know that the new version had to replace figure for copyright purposes, but choosing a wholly thematically and canonically different figure, such as this Lovecraftian thingy, seems an odd choice and it kind of sticks out like a sore thumb from a thematic and lore perspective.
The problem is that the Abomination creates an issue by being a “category of one” as opposed to fitting into the original game’s three rough categories (as indicated by the colours of the plastic):
- The greenskins (goblins, orcs and fimirs)
- The undead (skeletons, zombies and mummies)
- The forces of chaos (chaos warriors, the gargoyle and the witch/warlock)
Personally, I think that the Abomination would’ve fit better into a Lovecraftian horror styled expansion where it could get some “companions” of a similar flavour, while the Fimir would probably have been better replaced by something more “greenskin’ish” that, thematically, could serve as a “chief” for the orcs and goblins, like a troll, an ogre, a giant or something along those lines.
Yeah, that's a good point. I thought it didn't feel right, but couldn't really put my finger on why until you spelled it out here.
Admittedly I think I'd be looking at replacing the abomination with a more fitting miniature from another company. I completely agree that thematically the new one clashes.
If I remember well, it had about 13 scenarios and so I started making my own ones to keep playing this magnificent game.
I just found my old sticker book the other day 😊good memories ❤
Browdswode...
It was a fun game, sort of a precursor to the much better Warhammer Quest
Well, so long for alien looking elves.
I mean most elves in 80’s and 90’s had elongated face with alien eyes while recent ones being “humans with pointy ears” (Elderscrolls being exceptions).
you played the CRPG divinity 2? I was happy to see they brought back WEIRD ELVES.
That's a good critique, and I guess I messed up there. All I can say is, noted and I'll do better next time. Fair?
I remember playing the original as a kid! I think parts of it might still be around.
Anyhow, does the app allow one to play solo with the new game...? I might have to look into getting the new version if it does.
It does, but I wouldn't want to play with a full party of heroes that way. However, I did have a blast over the holidays playing the Elf solo quests from Mage in the Mirror using the app.
There's a new heros quest I didn't know this I want it.
Dread Warrior has some Nazgul vibes
Thanks.
I think a rehash of Space Hulk is also way long overdue !!
Excellent video comparison I'm going to get this one 👍 🎲😎
Heroquest was great, Starquest was great too
Great board game i still have it somewhere
It feels weird every time you say Zargon, when I keep expecting Morcar.
I still have the original game. Somewhere in attic. Hopefully.
Got this for Xmas the year it came out, loved it.
HeroQuest was canonical set in Glorantha right ? Somewhat relayed to Runequest?
Not sure about that Glorantha being 'official' as Glorantha is Chaosium's game world. Game's Workshop's world is the 'Realm of Chaos.
Name Heroquest was associated a Gloranthan RPG. This Boardgame is unrelated.
Willy Muffin has a video explaining this
It is a lovely comparison.
The difference is one is widely available today while the other is no longer in print.
Also a big factor! lol
Battlemasters was so good.
Thx for the video.
