The much maligned greed of Hasbro/WOTC
This has been a banner year for Hasbro showing off corporate greed and short sightedness with great aplomb so with the news of them laying off 1100 folks right before Christmas, I have a few things to get off my chest.

My thoughts on universal RPG systems

My thoughts on universal RPG systems
It also give me odd vibes of roleplaying combat and dice rolling roleplay. I reluctantly am using a fusion of Classic Fantasy and RQ Avalon Hill with homebrew thrown in (of course).
The original RQ1 and RQ2 from Chaosium did have Glorantha heavily baked into the system. When Avalon Hill produced RQ3 they dropped a lot of that and used a sort of alternate history of Europe as their setting in the boxset (though it did have a Glorantha setting pamplet in the box it wasn't part of the system per se). A load of Glorantha supplements were subsequently released to support RQ3 though when the RQ2 fans sort of rebelled! When Mongoose picked up the system for MRQ1 and MRQ2 (later to be Legends) they based it in the 2nd Age of Glorantha which was more of a traditional pseudo-medieval setting than the mythic 3rd Age. RQ6/Mythras, developed by The Design Mechanism, dropped Glorantha entirely and is, in my opinion, quite superior to RQ3 (and Chaosium's BRP) whilst still retaining much of the flavour - it's what I use now with my RQ3 Glorantha supplements to run both Gloranthan and non-Glorathan games. (I don't talk about the GW versions of RQ.)
How big table do you need and which is best for very beginner?
@@charlesbauswell459 I tend to use a 4' by 6' space but wirhxa small we group you can go 4' by 4' especially starting off ( say at the 500 point level for volt action(
I'm glad Modiphius came to the rescue for both Star Trek and Dune.
Close but not fully correct pronunciation of Mörk Borg. Interesting review!
Descent is broken when using the app as Zargon! The barbarian just blocks the doorway and kills all the monsters! Rinse and repeat….
I always chuckle when I hear the `history`of T&T... as I was there, I bought the rule book when it first came out in 75, and have played it ever since. I remember the occasional article about the game coming out each month in White Dwarf (though they were rare) and sitting in on a game put on by Ken. For me the game is not OLD school or retro, its simpy the game I have always played and still do 50 years on. The same applies to original D&D, its the game I picked up back in 74 and have played ever since :-)
For me, the benefit of a generic system is for running campaigns that are hyper specific and not easily slot into systems that are specialized Dnd is great for Tolkien fantasy Shadowrun is awesome if you want to do cyberpunk fantasy But what if you want to do a stranger things esque game Fantasy elements invading into a contemporary ( or period piece) small town setting in the real world. That's the benefit of knowing how to play a universal system or two Obviously diffrent ones have diffrent strengths Genesys is my go to for most things, but fate seems cool for like a one shot or something
and that's something i covered as well, I do thin that universal systems can work to build that game world that doen't exist BUT it's also still about theme and pacing, if say ypu wanted an RPG to be based on clone highm, Toon or Teenagers from outerspace wouyld make more sense than Hero. a game based on The Boys may benefit from the Hero System's granularity, or maybe a better fit for another supers game. It also really depends on what you are trying to bring out of the story
I am considering DMing again and I used to love this System. It had the best ship to ship interaction. Only issue I had was the dificulty to have characters changing professons or departaments.
I have a 3d printer. Is it possible to play Bolt Action in 12mm if you could scale them that way? I also think Bolt Action seem better/more interesting. Thank you.
@@Kastoruz yeah, you could re scale bolt action I would recommend maybe swapping inches to cm as one option, but I have seen players use Axis and Allies minis as well as flames of war to play Bolt Action, so it's doable
Holy crap, dial down that intro, man.
I'll be honest (as opposed to my other posts), I bought Runequest as a combat supplement to my Call of Cthulu game. But as I go through it, it has a much nicer "feel" to it than DnD.
@@timbuktu8069 I would agree, I had a GM running a D&D Oriental Adventures game that he converted to RQ3 with the Land of Ninja supplement. And it was a nigh6 and day difference, from there I grabbed a copy, and I have played D&D butRQ is my preferred game
Like Runequest for the system elegance but like Rolemaster even better for the more straightforward feel and those crits:)
What do u play I'm flames 🔥 from New Zealand 🇳🇿

Bolt Action 3rd Edition has just recently been announced. I'm really tempted to dive into Bolt Action after watching your video comparison and your discussion of the initiative system.
Thanks for the heads up
Great review.. have you changed that mic 🎤 since? Really makes you wince 😣
I own both games there each great in there own way
Rolemaster, best there is. Realistic and grandular. If you want real feel in space, Middle Earth, Cyberpunk, Swashbuckling. Is has it all, if you want realistic feel. If you want something else, you are not my type of role player.
The Games Workshop version of 3rd edition will always be the definitive version for me. I have the latest edition books, but would never play it simply because of how tied to Glorantha it is. Never have liked the vibe of Glorantha much.
Great Video! I have Steve, Bob, Dave and Craig! I didn't know there was a Bill. You are right about the head coming off but also the finger can break off too. If you love the action figures, you might want to have some spare parts for repair.
It’s like comparing apple to oranges. Bolt action is Platoon level, FoW is company / battalion level. Both are interesting games but are not remotely close to realistic simulations of WW2 Platoon / Battalion level combat. Good beer and pretzel but that’s about it.
Star Trek is NOT complex just because they use a percentile for the characters.
Correct, the game is more complex than most as it was the fashion for RPGs at the time as was percentile based games. It's hardly rolemaster, but RPGs in this time frame focused on simulation more than ease of play. Later versions would be easier to run/play. But I wouldn't call fasa trek needlessly complex,.nor would I blame the dice type for its complexity
Audio levels too high you had a lot of clipping. Other than that decent vid
I agree with some stuff but Descent differs greatly from HeroQuest, Descent is not a dungeon crawl, is a turn base action management hero strategy game. 2 greens and 1 red on an attack is wrong, almost all attacks have a blue dice. Also the best part of HeroQuest is the BrodSword. I own the 1990 HeroQuest and Descent first edition (actual dungeon crawl) and second edition.
Yeah man spot on. Just subed!
Dude, the intro is too long and really clipping people's speakers.
Right. I remember this Topps partnership that had Spock in his TMP uniform and they released Spock in his Vulcan clothes to the retail market. Who wants that?
I played AD&D in the early 80s but stopped playing by the late 80s. Back then I'd vaguely heard of Tunnels & Trolls as a "lighter" game (a bit condescendingly labelled as suitable for younger players) I've since thought of returning to paper RPGs, but looking through the old D&D books I realize what a daunting time consuming task it would be. And my memory isn't as good as it was. So I think T &T fits the bill nicely for some old school paper gaming.
I want to get into Flames of War but always was put off by the amount of tanks in vs infantry. Just seemed like a unhistorical imbalance. That, plus the tanks and vehicles all lined up next to each other makes games look kinda silly. I play BA in 1/72 scale and it works really well.
At the very least it nakes flames better suited to tank battles ober infantry ones, so urban fights in Stalingrad make better since in BA where flames is better suited to Rommel 's Afrika campaign
@@NerdRageAgainsttheMachine Yeah it definitely seems like it suits certain theaters much better than others. It also works better for other wars than WW2 like the Israeli-Arab Wars, Team Yankee, heck a Gulf War game would work pretty well with this system.
As a former FOW player, I found BA more to my liking, so now I play BA in 15mm👍
I'm thinking of doing the same, did you magnetise the troops?
@@Tipsythomas No, I had hot glued them to bases so I just removed them and glued them to pennies.
Imagine a a Hammerhead..
Thanks for the review! I’ve been just getting into the universe, so a campaign box like that sounds right up my alley.
Sorry, but interested though I may be, you need a better microphone! The cracking is making my head hurt :(
WOTC is cancer, just hope that this is a sign that they will have to sell off their IP's.
Hasbro is going downhill fast man. Idk where they getting these prices from
A business that starts by turning a passion into profits will quickly devolve into the pursuit of profits through the exploitation of other peoples passion. Sad but true.
I love this camera and all the graphics still looks like it’s from the late 90s
Toys aren't for kids anymore. What kid can afford an action figure now?
Minimum wage is now $20-30 an hour, or would be if it kept up with inflation
@@jC-kc4si I didn't have a job when I was ten.
Corporations are NOT your friends; very true. However, if a corporation is well managed, they want their customers to be happy; they make more money if they meet their customers wants and needs. IF a corporation is well managed, which Hasbro clearly is NOT. They put out a bunch of crap nobody wants, stupidly create artificial scarcity on the things fans DO want, and make it impossible for large segments of their fan base to obtain the things they want. All three of those are 100% in Hasbro's direct control and they keep making the same mistakes over and over again and thinking firing people fixes it.
Ahreed, if properly managed a corporation can bee a boon to it's customers, however many may even start that way tend to fall in a sikilar trap of trying to enrich tjier shareholders over pleasig customers, and hasbro os.clearly.at that stage.
In the 70s and 80s, you could get any Star Wars toy, they were stocked everywhere, it wasn't until years later they got scarce, today the toys are scarce on day one or even worse, you never see them. You can't buy what you can't find.
@@jC-kc4si That is true.
To your point about George Lucas' script for Star Wars ep IV vs the movie itself, there's an entire documentary called How Star Wars was Saved in the Editing Room. I think this still fits into your argument about how the particular media that a story is told through changes HOW that story can be told. But I just wanted to add that because it may also explain how what Rob Reiner said about Lucas could be valid just by reading the script and before seeing the finished product. Great video! Glad you were in my recommendations! Keep making videos like these!
Thanks for the heads up i will give it a look
Hey, I just want to point out that your title and thumbnail caught my eye, but its spelled "folly". Just in case you want to fix it.
Yeah, my bad. And fixed, thanks
@NerdRageAgainsttheMachine no worries. Just looking out! Really enjoyed your commentary! 😄
That looks amazing I would love to be considered for the vamp auction, you do great work!!
I’ve got all three, SFB, Tac Simulator and Attack Wing. I appreciate SFB and TacSim have limited IP scope on the timeline. I think it makes the games better. SFB Gorn ships look better than any. Still trying to like Attack Wing but the generic arcs kinda ruin it for me. I would love to play a fusion of SFB and Tac Sim. The simultaneous impulse system in SFB is elegant. My friends always want to go back to SFB when we gather. A starship seems complex, so the complexity doesn’t bother us too much.
Try Federation Commander it’s SFB, with streamlined rules made by the same people ADB. It’s a lot faster than SFB but retains all the cool stuff of SFB
I don't know where to leave this comment for you, but I'm really interested in your take on Baldur's Gate 3 (if you have one) and on the D&D "wars" as WoC plans to release a new edition.
Terrible sound, please fix :D
I've played both. (At least the base game campaigns) I feel the story is better in Descent as well as the overall mechanics Plus modular tiles vs. A set dimension board has more merit for expanding your game. As for asthetic appeal, I like Heroquest better and the missions are better balanced.
Starfleet Battles is about ten times better a game than either of these two games. Also, the more complex a game is, it definitely has more tactical depth and therefore a much better game where skill and ability is prized. I am sorry, but a very simple game is going to allow more luck to come into play and allow not dumber, but less intellectually inclined people to win. Games are dumbed down today because, frankly, they need to sell to people with less patience or ability to comprehend a complex rules set. Warhammer 40k, for example, is "wargaming" for dummies....😂
While i do enjoy SFB as well , i disagree that complexity makes a better game, or makes a game more tactically deep. Chess for example does not need reams of rule nooks or supplements to be an engaging game. And even Warhammer often gets out of hand with supplement after supplement adding complexity and ignoring good game design. I don't personally believe in the odea of a game being "too hard' but as the point is to have fun, I do believe in the idea of asking if the juoce is worth the squeeze.
I said a much better game where tactical depth and skill are prized. The less complex a game usually means the more dice rolling in the wargaming world, or as in the case of Chess, a mere exercise in memory. I point to what Warhammer 40K has become relative its first incarnations......which were true wargames, and not a skeletal frame used to move over-priced painted models around a table. The game is simply Yhatzee! More tactical depth allows for more surprises and move combinations. Don't take my word for it, take Bobby Fisher's. He believed that Chess was indeed simply a memory exercise versus a true intellectual contest. This is why he favored a style of Chess that randomized the back pieces for every game, thereby forcing opponents to think on their feet without pre-concocted move sequences. Thus, increasing the games complexity made for a greater intellectual challenge. Oh, and this is why no Chess grand master will ever beat a computer and can generally only stalemate one.
@@patiencezero-xc9zl Not true
I am a model builder--not a wargamer. I started model building as a kid in the 60s with the old Airfix 1/76 scale, then graduated to the more realistic 1/72, then 1/48 and finally the most realistic 1/35 scale as an adult. I also have armor and toy soldiers (like Conte) at 1/32 scale, and finally, the ULTIMATE SOLDIER and 21st Century Toys--1/18 airplanes and soldiers! I do like the 1/56 Rubicon models but am hesitant to start collecting this "odd" scale. I HATE wargaming figures, like the 28 mm Bolt Action, etc., because they look so unrealistic, with their huge, pumpkin heads, hands and weapons. Why do they not try to make wargaming products more realistic, like the Rubicon 1/56 line? They will generate a whole lot more interest and money!
Mostly out of tradition. Most minis war games before were either 15mm ( roughly 1/100, like flames of war, ) or 25mm ( 1/72 ) but often sculptors have slowly added to the scale for their ease of sculpting/ modeling with most minis games sitting around 28mm to 32mm. There are a few games that talk about how to scale measurements to make other scales work from 6mm to 54mm. But as Warhammer as probably the most popular minis game sits in that range it is what wargaming customers are used to. Additionally larger models like 1/35 are more mass to store/transport which is an arguement against them I have heard from gamers before. RPGs such as D&D also embraced 28mm from their wargaming roots, so roleplayers also prefer this scale as they mesh well, (i.E. I can use my Warhammer fantasy orcs on my D&D map if I want.).
It's funny that HeroQuest is now regularly $80-90 on Amazon and is still an open-ended box of ongoing adventure, with numerous expansions, while Descent has a new edition which is essentially cardboard and plastic driven by an app. An app which will only exist as long as the developers support it.
Sorry to hear you had a hospital stay; I hope you are well and wish you to continue to be well in your future. I think it's awesome that you remember your first viewing of Star Wars at the drive in. I don't remember seeing it the first time (in 1977): I do remember telling my brother that the competing film "Orca" (about a killer whale) was better :) I do remember my first time seeing Empire and Jedi. Who needs another critique of Kathleen Kennedy! The chief 'crime' of Disney's Star Wars era is that Disney disregard all of the universe that came before Disney's ownership. The attention that LucasFilm placed in unifying the various authors and stories is what made the Star Wars universe spectacular. While LucasFilm owned the IP, all authors and all stories had to achieve logical consistency with what came before and what was supposed to happen after the events we see in the various movies. LucasFilm had stories for what happened between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back that explained for example how the rebels arrived at Hoth after the apparent victory over the empire at Yavin. Disney shit on all of it to make their story free from constraint. And the reason they did that is because Disney was never interested in story-telling: they were only interested in property and market share. (JJ Abrams likewise shit on all of the Star Trek universe when he was given the opportunity). A person destroys accepted history at great peril to the society that relies on that history to define itself. Disney wanted the loyal fan base of the people who define themselves as fans of the Star Wars universe. But Disney did not want to bother with understanding that fan base. They just wanted its money and its market power. And because they didn't care about the history of the Star Wars universe, Disney destroyed that history without ever recognizing that it was doing something both terrible to the fans they wanted and destructive to the goals they set (to be profitable). It is symptomatic of the era in which we live that Disney mostly blames the fans for its own failures. The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker are already quintessential examples to show someone of a Mary Sue and of a Maguffin: these films, regardless of the era in which they were produced, are examples of the worst way to write characters and to write stories. Whatever production value they may contain, whatever technological innovations may be laudable, the writing is the absolute nadir of the Star Wars saga. It is the finest example one can find for new script writers of what to avoid.
The easiest example of this Disney Defication is that they brought back Palpatine without even the most basic attempt to explain. He returned "somehow"... What else need one say?
