Interesting list! There are a lot of good ones out there. My parameters for enjoying a dungeon crawl these days match yours. I've shed the over-produced, over-fiddly games for ones that will get to the table more often and won't give me a headache trying to play them competently. I actually just sold Altar Quest for that very reason - it was just such a burden to play solo controlling two characters. And I love the Sandlers' Modular Deck System - Street Masters is one of my all time favorites. I've just discovered the D&D Adventure Game series, starting with Dungeon of the Mad Mage (and I have Tomb of Annihilation on the way). Easy to play, not a table hog and still has that variety, adventure and surprises that I want from my dungeon crawls. Great series. I was also just looking at Valor & Villainy and that looks like fun (but may again be too much stuff). And totally agree with you on the exploding die! Thanks for doing this list and best wishes.

Right now for my next release I am working on REDACTED, but yeah I've been kicking this 5 to 8 session per campaign dungeon crawler for a couple of years. I really worked hard on it to make it scale well for the number of players and for fast set up time, but that is causing a ton of headaches. I also really focused on keeping the dice out of it too for better or worse. If you can stand TTS I could get into a game of it next time I have a build of it ready but REDACTED is going to take up more time right now.

My favorite solo game, ever!! I backed the new Core Worlds: Empire, also from Quixotic Games. Very excited about the solo mode.

I just stumbled across this toplist. It's great to see a top list that is not just games I would have expected, especially interesting to see Gloomhaven is not in there (though I love GH). I will definitely try out some of these as I have not played many of them yet!

The character variety is great fun as is the card play.
I do not like the card resolution system as you cull your deck to make it powerful you also greatly increase the odds of an auto-miss which is very much not fun. That is better when you use the house rules of the auto miss is just a -2

Gloomhaven is not a dungeon crawler. You’re probably thinking ‘huh’? But hear me out. Gloomhaven is an excellent game, it’s very well done and there are a LOT of things that deserve praise. The problem with gloomhaven is that it’s basically a Euro game… a tactical combat strategy game disguised as a crawler.
I didn’t have a problem with the story per say, or whatever it is people bitch about… but the main issue is that when the dungeon actually starts, there is no ‘exploration’. There’s not really a ‘freedom of choice’ to do anything besides just combat

Hey thanks for this video. I discovered some same tastes and motives. I appreciate your thoughts on the art of Middara, that was a reason for me not to buy this game (even if the gameplay is good). I also don't like fiddlyness and I prefer theme, immersion, streamlining and not long plays/turns. Thats why I backed Arena tC and I am waiting on its arrival (coming soon). I almost backed Barnacle Bay. It reminded me of Arcadia Quest. Now I am anticipating the 2nd KS.

Nice finally a list that is more near to the one that I can have. I don't have Barnacle Bay so hard to have it in my top ten, but happy to see different game like dungeon alliance or defiance that i have and is really cool and plus in a future (just to change this fantasy team). Did you play darklight memento Mori? The combat system is a bit mbe but for the thematic one of the Best
I've heard it's a blast but don't have it. It's always one I'm considering
Defiance is crawling up my top10 games but Hugh so much efforts:
- Changing the game material to improve setup (dual dial, card holder)
- Adding summary cards for mechanics and mission
- Painting all the minis (was expected ;p)
- Rewriting the narrative (that one is infuriating from CB) for something more character and context driven instead of being driven by npc with just 4 introductory page of context.

@@HungryGamerReviews main difference is we keep vaaran zandar with us all along so he can share context about IE and combined army. Kuervo is replaced by a more anonymous Mission Control and we are not inexplicably the only 4 dudes to do all missions: shaasvastii infiltrators have jeopardize all the operation and we have to operate while being considered as MIA

I have been playing more of it lately. I think already it would move up a slot. Seems I was right about putting it on the list!
It was a good move. I just got it out yesterday and played the last core box case and strongly thinking of getting the Wild Hunt expansion to add to In Mexico and the BPRD (which adds amazing replayability!)
...a Kickstarter that you can late pledge to is dangerously tempting too

Wife came to Gen Con with me (her first convention) and Barnacle Bay caught her eye. We went back and forth about it before grabbing it before leaving the con. We've really enjoyed it so far!! Reminds me a lot of Arcadia Quest, only this is pure co-op.

Destinies is absolutely an adventure game, not just a story game. It has combat, items, special abilities.

I didn't expect a reply to every game, so thanks for that. I backed most of these and some others I didn't mention. I'm very excited for MD2 (asymmetric mechanics for the heroes!), Stormsunder, Arkeis, Stars of Akarios, Frosthaven, Aeon Trespass, Isofarian Guard and Bardsung :)
I'm currently internally debating if I really should back Dungeons of Infinity, Agemonia and/or Drunagor. Watched your review on the latter, it was quite positive so I expected it in your Top10 as well.

S &S would be 11-13 somewhere in that range. I found it to be just a little bit fiddler to set up, and play than some of these others. Galaxy defenders is basically s&s but sci Fi.

Good List. Gloomhaven would be on there for me. Haven't received Arena/Tanares yet and don't own Aftermath or Wander Cult. Have Dungeon Alliance, but haven't got it to the table yet. Love Middara and Infinity Defiance. Also, excited for Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood.
Do you have the adventure packs for DA?
Dungeon Alliance is my favorite solo game! It take me two hours to play.

Great List! I think it is impossible to be wrong in a top ten what i like to play list.
There are several crossovers to my top 10 DC list, but the best is i have never played your no 1 an no 2! So there is is something to sneak around for me, maybe these games fit into my collection..
You should get your hands on the GD expansions, the best is still waiting for you. GD is booming again, at least here in Germany.
Gloomhaven i like much better than JotL because you can play it with the app which brings true exploration to the game.
Middara jumped at no 1 in my list. My wife and me love this game to death!

For dungeon crawlers, I tend to lean more towards the pen and paper based games, so My Top List would be:
1. D100 Dungeon
2. 4 against darkness
3. Gloomhaven JotL
4. Dungeons of Infinity
5. Middara
6. Descent 2nd ed
7. All of the D&D Adventure Board Games
8. Sword and Sorcery
HM: Gloomhaven, Star Wars Imperial Assult, LotR JiME
** Note, if we include boss battlers, KD:M would be # 3
Other Observations:
* Had Altarquest, already sold it off as I consider it a very below average dungeon crawler.
* I agree that Middara is amazing, but I'm like you that I HATE the extra pinups and some of the art style they are going for. Seems like they are going the KD:M route with extra pinup minis, which makes it less appealing for me. I will not be buying anything other than the core boxes.
* I've never heard of either "Wander: The Cult of Barnacle Bay" or "Arena: the Contest". Going to have to check both of those "semicolon" loving gmaes out ;)
* Only played the base game of Dungeon Alliance and didn't really care for it either. Maybe I need to look into the expansions for it since you say they make the game a lot better.
I've never played the d and d games. Always tempted.
Totally consider boss battlers, super excited for oathsworn
My favorite game is Shadows of Brimstone and I'm really surprised I don't see it on top dungeon crawler lists or even mentioned
I have played it a few times, and I have enjoyed it the thing that keeps it off of my shelf is that it simply is so sprawling in terms of how much space you have to have as well as how many boxes of things you get to really get to get close to half of everything. It's just a lifestyle game that I don't have space or time for...also. I HATE putting minis together.
But I'd always play it if someone wanted too
I find these lists very fun to watch. I’m surprised that Stuffed Fables or Mice & Mystics aren’t on here but Wander is.
Glad you enjoyed it. The short answer is I have not played Stuffed Fables, so I never considered it. Amazing how many good crawlers out there that I have not played. I have been out of town for a few weeks, and I have since gotten two more based off the comments on this list!

Generally I'd like to see character progression, monsters, episodical missions, and of course TREASURE! If there are hexes or map tiles, that's fine, but not important. You can crawl through 'virtual' locations represented by cards. In fact at times I prefer the abstracted dungeon rooms (ala Heroes of Terrinoth or Arkham LCG).
Thank you. My only complaint: please show any box or write name of game somewhere. People not native english have problem with understand what is it about and it is difficult to look for further information when I do not know how to spell these names.
More recent videos (check out the monthly menu series) always show the box cover.
Wonder if you've ever tried Sleeping Gods? I hear great things about it, so I was curious.
I haven't. It just doesn't look fun to me. I know that makes me an outlier, but I just can't get excited by it

Dungeon Alliance is in my top 3 too. What is the last DC you speak about? hearth warm... Oath sworn? I'm not English native and i can't heard correctly.
Have you tried other games from Mantic, apart Hellboy? Star saga is my favorite of the "light" dungeon crawler i played. They have a new DC too named " league of infamy" where you play the bad guys looting the goog ones, but i didn't know so much about this one.
I talked about Hellboy, and the last one was Barnacle Bay, I am excited about Oathsworn which I backed

Nothing I'm about to say is me saying you are wrong! Everyone has a different opinion and I have appreciated yours here.
Playing through Middara act 1 at the moment and I would say that the story is easily the worst part of the experience for me and my group. To me, it is extremely over written, self-indulgent, teen angst.
I do love the mechanical design of the game how ever!

Dungeon Alliance solo playtime:
- regular mode: 2 hours
- with adventurers pack: 2:30 hours
- with Champions expansion and deep dungeon room: 3 hours
Basically, 30 minutes per round. That is my time =)

I comment on some of those at the beginning of the video. There is a time stamp for it in the description.
Outside of those however, chronicles of drunagor is the biggest one, cause I've never played it.

@@jodiahquincy2693 gulp...I backed none of those! Lol. Almost backed bardsung, and will likely get that in retail. Everyone is telling me to get Chronicles so I might have to. Gloomhaven jslust next really grabbed me, the big box would prob be #15 or so for me, so I couldn't get excited about frosthaven. My buddy backed vanguard so I'll get to play that!
I'll be shocked if oathsworn and stars of akarios don't sneak in though. Unless I am totally wrong about those two games.

Although I think some of those kickstarters I mentioned would also make the list if you ever get around to playing them (particularly Stormsunder), but I understand dungeons crawls are long and expensive, and obviously not out yet. Not sure I understand. #1 is hard to find at the moment, they have a reprint coming to KS this year.
Galaxy defenders is hard to get. Other than that I think all of them are readily available.
Agreed on Galaxy Defenders (very underrated), Altar Quest was WAY too fiddly for me, not in my top 10, it just made me want to play Arena The Contest instead, which is in my top 5. I enjoy Middara also as a Top 5, a game I did not expect to love as much as I do. For some reason, I can't put Dungeon Alliance in a dungeon crawler category for me. It feels more like a puzzle game like Renegade with some theme splashed on. I like the game, just never feel like I'm dungeon crawling with it. Some of the others like Hellboy and Aftermath, I will have to check out. Infinity Defiance and Wander I never even heard of before! I will definitely have to look into those!
The one that is in my top 5 which you did not mention at all (nor have any other commenters) is The Hunters AD 2114. An open world dungeon crawl/adventure/survival game that is everything Fallout the Board Game wishes it was. Love it and can't wait for the new expansion to arrive.
Ah hunters passed me by. I don't think I even realized it had delivered!
Really enjoyed Gloomhaven (finished including expansion) then Jaws of the Lion which was so much more streamlined but a little lacking that legacy aspect. Want to play more Wanderer:Cult of Barnacle Bay and Reich Busters which is a somewhat broken game but also feels so good play through several stealthy rounds conserving cards then throwing down card after card in a single round clearing half the map. Reich Busters was a game that convinced me to stop buying games with LOTS of minis, similar to your comments I enjoy painting a few heros but loose interest in the piles of enemies. Also very eager for Oathsworn (standee version), my most anticipated game for 2021 (maybe 2022 now). The other dungeon crawler eager for is CoraQuest, something a bit easier to get to the table with the kids who are not quite ready for Wanderer.
I've heard Reich busters is "fixed" w the new stuff they released as errata
I have heard similar but still waiting on errata to arrive, then intend to get it back to the table.

Not a bad list at all. I have become partial to small box games for ease of play. Like Mini Rogue. Got all that content and for a small box it sure feels fresh every time you play. I have logged almost 30 plays and don't see myself putting it down yet :)

Barnacle Bay is also in my top 5 of all time. My family has played through the campaign at least three times. I also own Dungeon Alliance, Arena (Haven't played it yet), and Gloomhaven. I'm a huge fan of your top 10. Great mixture of games.

@@HungryGamerReviews if it has blue Heroic Skill images on the heroes, it's the new version. Also the rulebook has on page 1 its version number.
If you have the all-yellow heroic skills and version 1.0, get post holiday the upgrade sheet from asmadi as a free download and you can print and cut and glue over the heroes so they are updated.
B/c you are on vacation, don't play Archer. Don't play yeti or lich either. The rest works fine.

Well Jaws of the Lion made it...but yeah. Vanilla Gloomhaven simply does not make it for me, and I played the whole campaign. Top 15 or 20 yes, but not 10.
Dungeon Crusade is a massive beautiful game. Great solo play.

I have Gloomhaven, and while I like that the monster cards can level up, I don't like the play style.

I appreciate the comments regarding the oversexualization with Middara beyond the core box. That was a concern for me, particularly because I want to play this game with my teenaged sons.
I think it's def sexualized. I'd say see if you can find some images from the story and see if it's too much

No no no, to have the best metal miniatures on the market in a dungeon crawler is only positive (although I can understand its a hassle putting them together for people with limited experience) 😅
After putting some of them together, I can absolutely see why people enjoy it. It wasn't really my favorite thing, I enjoy painting them more than the putting them together.
But they do look really good.
I'm one of the weird types that doesn't particularly want to put a lot of effort into the mooks that will only show up on occasion, so I actually really like they have the little tokens with the art on them It makes me really happy
We cannot buy the Wander: The Cult of Barnacle Bay so we will never know is it really good or not :)

well, its less that i dont like doing it, more that they just dont get as much tgable time so i would rather look at the heroes painted up

Great little game. But not one of my top 10. The one thing you will notice about all my top 10 is they are heavier and have some sort of campaign to them.
That said BoD is still on my shelf
I've never played or heard of most of those in your list lol, my favourite dungeon crawler is massive darkness, absolutely love that game, I also love Doom also.

I like Middara over Gloom in deed, Dungeon Alliance I like it is great game, the issue I encounter is the time, its a VERY long game and that brings down gamers a lot, even do is good, the other issue its that becomes repetitive, you start the same way and sa there are no missions really, well the quest may work as them but not quite, and the campaign does not feels that great, don;t make me wrong I like very much Dungeon Alliance, more for casual gaming than anything else trully, its a solid game with very good heroes bench.
One I would love to see you play" CORE SPACE, it launched its second campaign, driven to "Solo" Campaign, but really can play several people, I love Fantasy and Sci Fi, Core Space brings a blend of Skirmishi\Boardgame, into a Dungeon crawl type, you are a Smuggler trying to survive in the fringges of space, you have to loot the places, you get hire to retrieve stuff or people, or whatever, you handle a full crew, with fast gameplay, and numerous treats, the hungry for biomass enemy known as the "Purge", local Gang bands, the Space Police, different type of stronger enemies of reinforcements from the Purge, numerous Smugglers (Traders) to choose from, great character development, survival at the best, great rules, and a sandbox system to pretty much add whaterver you want into the game.
The second campagin brings a new type of enemy, new rules, token, weapons and much more, the game is just really amazing, right now my top fav Crawler type at this moment, you should give it a try :P

Would like to see this re-done with a list of games that are still widely available, as a lot on this list just aren't. Also: a thought, in the future, name the game before you talk about it. Instead of "#x is a game that .... , and that game is Y", instead say, "#x is Y, this is a game that...".
Will be redoing this list sometime between now and the summer. I do not have any plans to do a list cific Leon games that are easily available now and not available now, though I can understand the attraction of that. However for the type of content that I make making two different lists just is not something that I'm interested in doing.
When the new one comes out based on how it is looking now I'm guessing most of them will be available either currently or at least on pre-order of some kind
Talking about dungeon crawlers without at least mentioning Descent 2nd edition? Why?
Honestly? I don't like it. Found it fiddly to set up, with a not particularly engaging story, and really expensive. Game play is pretty good. So I guess to say "I don't like it" is an exaggeration, It would be in my top 20, maybe top 15. But not close to top 10.
Now perhaps the new descent will make it...if I get it.
@@HungryGamerReviews My criticism wasn't about liking, but about mentioning. Because independent from its qualities, I think it was a milestone: it was the best known for a long time (including 1st edition, about a decade), it was the origo of every other dungeon crawler. Before it was Heroquest, after Gloomhaven, but in between, Descent had a long rulership. But this is of course trough my personal and subjective glasses, I cant link any statistics to confirm this.
The setup is fiddly, but just as long, as You dont have a proper storage system for it. I have a big plastic bit box for the tokens and small cards, magnetic storage for the minis (just the painted ones), zip-bags for the active characters (with all the cards) and ring binders with transparent envelopes for the map tiles (as the tiles are numbered, its basically a book this way) and so the setup isn't really more than 10 minutes.
The story... Well, You may be right, its not the best (although the Shadows of Nerekhall expansion has a really good story), but I guess that Im more that kind of player, who wants to solve the board, and not the quest.
I have my doubts about the new Descent... Its not a 3rd edition, but a new game (Why?), the new artwork is very different (Personally I dont like it), its freaking expensive, as I know its very dependent from the app, and at last, its not a 3rd edition... They just should have make a 3rd edition, with a bit of streamlining and a more emphasized coop/solo mode. Why another game which is obviously too similar to be a complete another one? Maybe FFG has doubts?
@@bicskeiz not denying it's an IMPORTANT game. But this list is my favorite games, which I clarify in the intro of the video as the ones I personally like to play the most.
If I were to do a most important list then Gloomhaven, descent, heroquest,.and mice and mystics would all be on the list, and my 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10 wouldn't.
That said. I greatly appreciate your thoughts on descent, sounds like you have a kicka$$ system to keep it all together.

I think every similar game has to have a good storage system. Because a time consuming setup can be such a frustration, that even the best game wont hit the table to often. (Thats why I never even tried Gloomhaven...)

Well I do talk about Gloomhaven...and yeah. It just doesn't excite me to play over and over again. Story is too fragmented for me. Jaws is better in that regard

It is definitely not for everyone. It actually took me a few plays before it clicked for me. I actually was set to let it go, and figured I would try it one more time, and it clicked.

Well you’re right, these are very light dungeon crawler games. So many better ones that are medium/heavy but to each their own…

Not sure I understand showing up to comment and crap on my list...but I guess as you say to each their own. Also confused by the comment they are very light...DUN, LOD, DA, Middara,. Oathsworn are some of the heavier crawls around.
@@HungryGamerReviews - to name a few, Frosthaven, Aeon Trespass, Kingdom Death Monster and the new Gambler’s Chest, Isofarian Guard, Tainted Grail (and the new Kings of Ruin expansion will likely be great), Euthia, Tanares Ultimate, and even Shadows of Brimstone if you want a nice medium level one.

@@HungryGamerReviews Not that it bothered me, its just was worth more for me to write down the names on the list and individually look on youtube for a better view on each game. The comentary is just for you to give you a bit of (in my opinion at least) healthy critisism. So there is a chance you grow in quality if there is time where I look at one more of your videos. We cannot expect improvement with plain acceptance on everything, don't we?
It seems you haven't played any game that is older than 5 years. Also, we want to see the games, not your face. If I don't watch the whole video I don't know for which game you are talking about. Thumbs down.
