    I am right there with you when it comes to "wearing" your kit. If it were up to me, I'd have my rod and my net and that's it. If you want to come up with a system that can keep me organized without having to wear a vest or pack, I will be the first to buy! Thanks for making these videos, really love watching them!

    Thanks Andy. I'm all for the minimalist approach but one indispensable item I have is a Monomaster to catch up all the odd bits of waste line that get generated during the day. Everyone should have one or something similar.

    • @IBandAndyFishing
      @IBandAndyFishing  3 роки тому

      I chop all my waste in to 1" sections in to my pack Mark, then vacuum it out and seal the bag in waste disposal. The MM was too big for me, totally understand that's a personal preference though 👍

    And a good quality, large, strong safety pin (as used for babies nappies) is far less expensive and as good or better even than an expensive simms zinger!! If you're not worried about your fly fishing street cred that is aha! Mine have never let me down yet!

  • @kerrypitt9789
    @kerrypitt9789 3 роки тому +2

    I fought with bags and packs etc for literally decades. I have an inflatable vest for boat fishing, but for on the rivers I have finally settled on a proper shoulder pack. I do not like chest packs at all, I used to have a backpack but every time I needed something i had to take it off. My shoulder pack is well designed and hold everything I have to take with me.
    I agree with your fly selection, but I have yet to find a great fly box. I have a bunch I don't care for in a drawer.
    I had some Johnson's retractors but they are hard to find here. I went to a safety company and bought a few industrial strength zingers and so far so good.
    We also carry Bear Spray but you don't have to worry about that
    Thanks for a great video!

    Agree Andy, keep it simple. I carry the same two boxes (dry flies and nymphs/spiders) all year round, only exception is an extra box at mayfly time just containing mayflies, as normal boxes squash them. I can't think of a time in the last few years where I've been on the river and felt I needed something that wasn't in those two boxes to catch. I use the Wychwood pack you mention at the start of the video and can get everything in there including lunch for the day. Only other pack I use is a simms half day back for winter grayling when its really cold as I can fit a 1 cup kelly kettle in there for that much needed lunchtime hot drink and a break out of the water (no one fishes at their best when too cold). Have been using the rubber band trick since I fished with you and it does work well coupled with a good desiccant, especially for CDC flies.

    Unhooking may. 18:40 I’m in the USA. I bank fish. I’ve never seen or heard of an “unhooking mat”. I’m lucky enough to land the fish without having to break out a mat and wet it before I land it. Alone I don’t see how this would work very well. Just seems like bulky gear I can’t use. Anyway. Good on ya for using it.

    I envy the American fly fishers, they have such a vast choice of equipment to choose from compared to what UK retailers offer; which seem to be all the same things from the same manufacturers! British fly fishers seem to have to put up with what they can get to be honest! William Joseph stuff is very practical but not sold here for some reason, I've tried to find it myself so far with no luck? At one time here years ago, they used to sell chest packs (similar to Joseph stuff) which were graduated e.g. a larger gusseted pocket against your chest, another gusseted pocket on top of that but slightly smaller, followed by another smaller gusseted pocket on top and in front of that, which didn't impede your arms when handling the line in front of you or when reeling in the fish, but they don't seem to make them anymore here. Current chest packs seem to be made to bulge out in front of you and too bulky and get in the way of line handling and reeling in, thats the only reason why I choose to wear a vest. The only chest pack that appeals to me is a model by Fishpond, but at a £146.00 or more for a chest pack, I can't justify that cost! British fly fishing retailers and manufacturing companies need to to really up their game and be more diverse in the choice they offer and produce and be competitive in what they sell I feel like the American's. Maybe Scierra could come up with a graduated style chest pack again! I'd be happy to advise them what I need as a fly fisher in a chest pack (e.g. no useless drop down boxes with foam in for one!!)

    Great video Andy and a few bits I will need to add to my kit. Reference camera/chest pack , have you tried the backpack shoulder strap holder? I used it for the first time on a recent trip to the upper wye, found it much better than the chest strap. If you get a chance take a look at the video to get a feel of the view point I would recommend giving them a go and £10 on Amazon. video is titled A days fly fishing on the Upper Wye.

    Great video! I am not sure where you are located, however, I can easily go on line to find out. My daughter married a Geordie and is now living in Glasgow and, of course, we travel from the US to visit. Obviously, with Covid - 19 raging in our country and with come of the travel restrictions in place, we are not sure when traveling to Scotland will be possible. I would LOVE to fly fish in Scotland!!! If you could give me some information on how to proceed with that, I would appreciate it very much. As far as lodging, I am VERY simple. The ranch I use in Colorado is a working ranch....we have bunkhouses, no running water (spring fed water), no electricity, outhouse toilets and one outside shower. It is fabulous! So....my housing needs are minimal. If you could get me started on good water, good guides, costs, and minimalist housing, that would be fabulous! Or if anyone else is reading this, I would appreciate any information from everybody! Thanks and be safe, everyone!

      Whistle is very important. I agree with that and always have one with me. I also share my location with my wife via the iPhone fine-me app so she knows roughly where I am if I got into trouble. Yes, I know it’s reliant on a battery powered device which can easily go wrong but as a multi layered approach it’s a good start. I’ve consider a personal locator beacon like a Spot 3 or the Garnin ones but decided I don’t go anywhere that remote. In the US and other countries with truly wild places I think they are very wise.
