- In this Fly Fishing Everyday Carry Video, Lance Egan shows us what he carries in his fishing pack. Lance is a very experienced fly fisherman and has been a guide for several years. Over the years he has dialed in, what he believes to be the most essential items to have in your pack to have the most comfortable and effective experience out on the water.

Fly Fish Food
Similar kit to my running rig when it comes to simplicity. I used to carry way too much gear but it was because I was trying to be a Jack of all trades on EVERY trip. Years ago I started pairing down my kit and BOOM i became more comfortable and focused on fish rather than flies and it has made it more enjoyable… Tight lines everyone! 🤙
The number of fly boxes that you carry every day is off the charts. I'd enjoy a video that deep dives into all of the flies that you carry. Regarding tippet, why don't you use a tippet tender, or some kind of organizer?
I like being able to handle the tippet spools because I find it’s easier to remove tippet this way. For me the tippet dispensers often tangled my tippet and we’re always awkward to get tippet off the spools.
@@Lanceeganflyfishing i would love that video about your boxes lance. that one c and f box had so many euro nymphs in it. awesome!
@@varmintassassins8924 u want to c what secret goodies he has... there's no secrets dude. "Fish it like its fish food, tons of conference and get it deep and u will catch fish " Lance Egan...
I want to be like Lance when I grow up
Lance is my hero
Cortland ultra premium tippet is nice stuff!
This is Greg Osborne from Vermont thanks for another great video like always and I use floral because I have learned from the best. Lol
Totally agree with the C&f box suggestion, except I use the medium size with swingleaf because it’s waterproof. As far as tippet, I’ve been on the trouthunter plan for years now in both nylon for dries and fluoro. for subsurface, though a buddy of mine got samples of the newer cortland stuff and it’s pretty good too. Thanks Lance!
I carry 4,5 & 6x in both nylon and flouro on a Fishpond Headgate holder. Lighter & heavier spools in the pack. Rio for sighter & nylon, Trouthunter is my flouro. I'm down to 3 boxes now.....same box you have for nymphs, a dry & terrestrial/misc box.
This is great, thank you for making it.
I use the german "stroft" brand for years. Stronger than most other brands and very reliable. I use nylon only for very thin strengths 6.5 and 7x to keep as much knot strength as possible. Nylon ist often a bit stronger in knot strength than FC.
I use the exact same tippet as you bro!!! Only Umpqua fluorocarbon….. the deceiver packs have a tone of tippet on them, so that’s a big reason why I use them…
As usual great vid bro!!!
Really appreciate this. When I am trout fishing I carry 4 5 6 tippet, usually mono. I do keep invix 5 X when I nymph. Steelhead I carry 0 through 3x mono.
I use Fulling Mills fluorocarbon tippet. Great value and have had no issues that would make me change.
Very good setup 👌 I use tmc akron
I carry trout hunter, its expensive but i found it to be the best for me. As for sizes, I've learned that the fish don't really care so I mainly throw on 3.5x or 4x. I lose less fish and flies but land more trout.
Regarding the Ketchum release tool, "I use them all the time" Humble brag.
Cortland Ultra Premium Fluorocarbon. By far the strongest tippet material I've found
I love it to 6x the 7x kinks.
The 6x is 3.9 pounds strong that is insane.
2 Fulling Mill Tactical Boxes(great recommendation, Cheech), RIO tippet and sighter. I have yet to find a retractor that works with the extended FP Nomad net(Curtis recommended this net, love it) on my Simms Sling, so I use the net sheath. Not ideal, but it works. I’ll be back in UT soon(hopefully), can’t wait to stop by the shop.
I have the tactical max boxes, but they squish my nymphs and cause them to fold over and ruin the foam slots. Considering just cutting the middle leaf out so there's headroom, but my c&f medium waterproof box with a leaf works great so far.
If anything, I'd switch back to tacky original for nymphs
I’ll have to watch for that. I do have one with the leaf(max?), but I have yet to put anything in it. The one without the leaf has been great so far. I’ve always liked silicone boxes too(tacky, Umpqua ones are my favorites, but they don’t make them anymore), but I like the idea of the FM boxes to get away from carrying more than 3-5 smaller boxes. I haven’t bought into the “minimalist” approach, but I think I know what I need to carry for the places I fish, and if I can get everything down to 2 boxes and replenish as needed, I’d be happy.
Lance - how do you identify fly lines in your boat bag? Nice lighting work
I label the spools, but after a bit of use you can tell what they are based on color.
4,5,6x Cortland fluorocarbon for dry fly and nymphing,1,3x streamer. Walmart cortland hasn’t let me down yet so I’m good with it. but wanting try other tippet. Suggestions?
Rio Fluorocarbon , Fluoroflex Strong, Powerflex, Powerflex plus and Suppleflex
Greetings from Pennsylvania. Cortland top secret or trout hunter floro. 6x and 7x are most common but I carry 4-8x
Hey man, you're an inspiration! Have you ever fished the Owyhee River in Eastern Oregon?
Trouthunter fluoro for nymph and dry fishing !
TIPPET - 6x I like Umpqua Deceiver 7x I use Rio. I find I get better hook sets with the Umpqua. I think it's because it stretches less than Rio.
Lance - why do you prefer fluoro for dry fly fishing? I use fluoro when nymphing but use nylon when fishing dries.
Because it works the same and eliminates the need for more spools in my pack.
I use trout hunter fluoro mostly in 6x but carry everything else. I’ll also use pline fluoroclear from time to time
Same here, mostly Trout Hunter fluorocarbon for tippet.
I use nylon SA and RIO guide spools if I can get them. 0X & 1X for streamers, 2X for Hoppers w/4X to dropper, 3X for nymphs to size 14 and 4X nymphs size
Rio standard nylon in 4x-6x for anything bigger I use Maxima
Only fluorocarbon tippet in my pack. Cortland ultra-premium in 3X (streamer), 4X, 5X.
Trout hunter , small spools and seem to less visible to my eye. Flouro is a must. 12 boxes... im locked in with my 8 confidence patterns and feel like my 6 boxes are overkill. I would have to give up my mt dew and mormon meth spots to carry any more...
floro for almost everything.
i like the rio fluoro flex plus for nymphs, and power flex plus on drys. i only fish the nylon on drys because fluorocarbon is so pricy. the sa absolute fluoro is awesome too.
I'll take nylon over fluoro always for dry flies. In my experience, fluoro of 5X and smaller will never sink, so it has no advantage over nylon except maybe abrasion resistance, which isn't a big factor for me.
@Lance, so what made you go with Umpqua compared to other companies?
I've been waiting for something like this. Would love to see all of the gear you take to a comp, broken down by river and stillwater.
BTW I've been fishing trouthunter fluro 7x on a micro thin leader for nymphing, and 6x for dry dropper on a tapered euro leader, same for dries on a Harvey leader
I use fluorocarbon tippet for nymphs and mono tippet for dries .
But fluorocarbon is mono. 🤯
@@Lanceeganflyfishing my mistake I meant nylon…. Fluorocarbon tends to sink dries faster making it a better choice for wet flies , nymphs , streamers. Thanks for catching my mistake .
@@lastcoyote2355 Fluorocarbon tippet is the tiniest bit more dense than nylon in trout sizes used for dries. The hook is significantly more dense. You can definitely use nylon tippet for dries (or all trout fly fishing for that matter) but you can also use fluorocarbon tippet. The sinking tippet thing is a farce.
I use fluoro in 5 and 6x
I use Cortland Ultra Premium Fluorocarbon Tippet in 5X and 6X for euro nymphing. Love it so far.
SA absolute flourcarbon
Trouthunter nylon and flouro.
I use only nylon tippet for dry flies and only fluorocarbon for nymphs and streamers. 3X to 7X.
Nylon, RIO.
SA tippet 3x, 4x, 5x & 6x Flouro & nylon. Ya never know....
Trout Hunter 6-8x fluorocarbon
I use Cortland Top Secret Fluero
Corral and ultra premium 5x 6x and 4x for euro rigged streamers. Stuff is like piano wire. Only downside is it can be hard to seat the knot. Lots of spit or just tighten your knot with hands in the water.
Nylon 4x and 5x
Flouro
If you need to carry 12 to 15 fly boxes you probably shouldn't be using the term "dialed in" or "very experienced", especially if 2 of the 15 boxes hold over a 1000 flies. But in your defence, guys like you are great for the economy
That's what you'd call a mustard pack, too much mustard on the dog😁
We knew someone would make a weiner comment.
That white dust is colloidal silica--bad for lungs.
Thumbs down on the stomach pump. A professional fly fisherman should know what a trout eats.
Ain’t nobody a professional. We’re all amateurs.
Good to know. Maybe when I go pro I’ll eliminate it. 🙄🥱
@b shadd booooooooooo
Chuckle if you like, Lance. People follow your lead. You just sold an untold number of stomach pumps on your favorite run.
Lead by example and be a good steward.
@@bcshadd how worried are you about the trout? Are you willing to minimize your impact by not fishing at all? Virtue is virtue.
you guys really need to bass fish more...everyone is trout trout trout...bass and carp exist, come on guys!
Lance fishes carp, he's talked about it on the podcast.
Trout is what competition is all about so that's what the guys focus on

@@brighamwilson1221 Is this Instagram? NO. Butt out dude, learn to take things a little more light heartedly. I've followed this channel for years, and NEVER see anything warm water. End of story. I still subscribe and enjoy the channel, I would just like to see a fish other than a trout, esp when there is almost no fly bass content out there on UA-cam because everyone is all bout trout, when the sport will sustain itself better outside of the trout only mentality. Settle down, Beavis.
