- Andy tackles a local stretch of creek with streamer style flies in hope of wild brown trout. Using flies like the Sculpin, Woolly Bugger and articulated lures, searching the stream with floating and streamer tip fly lines. Will the predatory trout like these tactics, or should Andy have stuck to his usual dry fly and euro nymph kit?

Andy it would be nice to see you target pike on the fly over the winter. You like your lure fishing so why not combine your fly fishing skills into this area of the sport. It would be nice to see some more pike fly fishing videos on UA-cam.

My go to method up here in Scotland. Works extremely well. Absolutely love it. The sea trout and salmon take them too.

Learned a lot from that Andy. Also shows the advantage of leaving LWD in the river rather than clearing it all like we do down here on the chalk streams.

I started off fly fishing on trout lochs and fisheries using streamers and its great fun!!! I've never tried the method on rivers though. Perhaps I'll have a go next season!! 😁

Yeah absolutely right on my local river in Lancashire going back as far as 15yrs ago, come September I would often revert to fishing streamers particularly in the evening and often into the darkness to target the large fish that feed on minnows. Some of these large trout make it a habit of coming out at night and in spates. The tail end of large deep pools is where I had success and on one night I had a personal best wild brown of four pounds and 12 more all over the pound mark.

Good fun on the streamers but i always find hook ups to be alot harder on the fly than spinning even if its with one hook

Only newish to fly fishing all all I've done before is all with drys, so this was good to learn about streamers. Just need a wets video now!!! Anybody recommend a great video how to use wet flies in rivers? Andy?

That was awesome Andy you big woolly bugger :) You could have LRF'd it too and caught loads.
I missed it this year(covid na na na na nineteen) - but there's a few days at the end of summer where I usually catch Bream and Hybrids on LRF/small shads. Perch season is just about upon me now though - first proper session later today on some new water - can't wait.
Nice one Andy, good fishing good filming too, which I'm guessing was some careful editing. But just great fishing. I've relied on you and IB for my virtual fishing as I've missed my pilgrimage to my home turf, West Lothian Scotland.

Nice one Andy, those bigger trout tend to T-bone streamers I've found, normally the tail nips are from smaller fish unless you're swinging them which I've found pretty shit for hook ups.
They still do the streamer tip which for that kind of water looks ideal, it's a bit slow for some of the places I chuck streamers I could get by with it if it was the only line I had but prefer a faster sink tip or a full sink depending on what the pool dictates.
It's an awesome method though and hopefully more people might realise it's not just a method for when days are slow it's an out and out fish catching method in itself 🎣🎣

I have caught grayling on a lure and I remember some years back an angler saying how he was catching large grayling from the Dee, on a drop minnow.

Interesting comment about the metabolism. Im certainly no expert on fish metabolism. I would have thought that in cooler conditions, they would need more food though. In warm blooded mammels thats normally the case. We essentially burn more energy to keep warm.
Still have so much to learn but getting away from having it too cakey - my earlier videos on my channel the make up just didnt work😀
Grayling are dark horses. I once saw a chap catch a 2lbs plus grayling whilst spinning for salmon.

Great vid! Where do you get your streamer flies from? Not many places in the U.K. seem to supply sculheads etc. Or do you tie them yourself?
Superb video as always, you where on them from the word go, all season or what we had of the season anyway i had the streamer set up in the car but end up going straight to the nymph rod really have to give this bash next year streamers seem to be super effective can i ask what size of hooks your tying with these streamers. thanks for sharing as per Andy.

Great video, Andy. I've done well on the Dove with streamers though I'm not that comfortable with it, no matter how hard I try! However, there is no doubting it also attracts the bigger trout. By the way, which knot do you use to attach your streamers? I do like the idea of the extra articulation the loop gives.
Hi guys, I'm having a go at this method tomorrow, I've a 10ft #7 or 9ft #5, which rod would you recommend using? Both are AtomSix Hyperions. Not sure if you'll get this in time.

HI IB & Andy, Love the streamer fishing must give that a go next season, sorry IB but i am the trout queen.
I’m mostly doing nymph fishing these days but my river has some lovely deep pool sections that I’m always walking past thinking I need to bring another rod & pull some streamers through this but never do 😂 really because there’s plenty obstacles on my fishing day & carrying two rods would be a pain! I use a cortland 3wt nymph rod mostly do you think it would be ok to switch out spools to a dry sink tip & fish streamers on the pools? Or best take the correct rod?

Hi Andy, just been watching this video and think it's great well done. Just a question, I see your using floating fly line then you have tapperd down, how long is your tappers and how are you tieing them together, im guessing a blood knot.

I personally find it works better upstream in small rivers and streams or when it’s low and clear. In big rivers you are far enough away that it doesn’t matter.

What do you mean about the end of the season? Is there only certain times of the year you can legally fish there?
The Brown Trout season on rivers stops this time of year until March to allow for breeding

Andy are these ¨flies¨ legal on all fly only waters?
Some clubs/estates will stipulate maximum fly sizes, some might stipulate 'no streamers/lures', always work checking your club rules.
Nothing in the national byelaws to prevent using them 👍
