- I'm always looking for ways to make my time on the water more efficient, and thus more enjoyable. One of the ways that I do this is through pack organization. This video goes through what we both carry on our person while wade fishing for trout.

I just picked up a new Confluence last Spring that someone had stashed away. I love the two magnetic compartments on the front. As an over 60 fisherman, I also wanted a lighter, more efficient arrangement for days when I'm only away from the truck for an hour or two. With that in mind, I've permanently moved my water bottle, net and bear spray to a heavier duty wading belt. I didn't need the contents of the backpack for the short 1 or 2 hr trips, but didn't want to give up the front pack of the Confluence. My solution was to adapt the shoulder harness from a William Joseph Release chest pack so it would fit the Confluence front pack. It required exchanging a couple of the buckles on the Release shoulder harness with a couple of spare WJ buckles which I got from Badlands Gear. They shipped them to Canada no charge - still providing fantastic service the William Joseph packs! My friend also acquired some spare buckles and adapted one the shoulder harness from one of the Badland Gear Binocular cases to his WJ Confluence. I just unsnap 4 buckles and can switch between the original Confluence backpack and my shoulder strap harness. What an amazing pack the Confluence is. So much flexibility and function.

Love your videos! So I got out of the pack game and went to a vest. I went with the Orvis ultra light vest, which is super slim. I carry 2 boxes on the water with me, and swap out steel head boxes this time of year. I use the same round box for my indicators, I carry split shot with me, extra leaders, and the foam rigging card for dry dropper rigs and for 2 fly steelhead setups. I use the fishpond tippet gate to carry my tippet, I have nippers, forceps and a brass not tier on the front of my vest. Also keep my Ohio and pa licenses in pocket. Net on the back. Along with gloves and buff. For longer days on water and away from car, I add a drift waterproof backpack to carry extra things, but I dump it on the bank when I fish. I like to fish lite. I use the Orvis travel case to keep rods, reels and extra fly boxes organized in trunk.

@@BackyardBassin I went with a Dryft backpack for cost, very happy with it so far. I am in my mid 50’s so being lighter on the water allows me to stay in the water longer. You guys are young, so it is probably nothing for you to go all day with the weight on your shoulders.
Joe I have the same orvis vest. Do you wear the pack while you have the vest on or pack the vest til you get to your fishing spot. Thanks
@@Mntnere Yes, so if I am going to be away for the car all day, I use the pack to bring extra things, water, lunch stove. I hike to the spot I fish, many times I will keep the vest in the pack if it is a long hike, and leave the pack on the bank while I fish. Pick the pack back up when I go to the next hole. Having a water proof pack is awesome, because sometimes the crossings can get a little deep, and it helps to keep my stuff dry.

This is a very useful video. If you were going to go on a seven day hike and wanted to bring as much fly fishing gear as you could comfortably carry along with your tent, sleeping bag, food, ect what would you bring ?
Glad it was helpful! I would definitely pack light for a trip like that. We do some backpacking/fly fishing trips and typically only pack a lanyard and fly rod. On the lanyard we have a small fly box, fingernail clippers, split shot, tippet, forceps, and a strike indicator or two. I'll try to do a video in the future on our lanyard setup.

I am fairly new to fly fishing and when I was wading across the river in my hip pack it got wet and my flies got rusted out. Is there a way to prevent this or should I get a waterproof hip pack instead?

Great video guys - I had the confluence pack and exchanged it out (when WJ was in Utah) as anything on the zingers fell into the magnetic closure area. I have one quick question for you - Did you make the screen for your net? I have a similar FP net, and thought that was a interesting approach.
I did. I bought some mesh screen material at Jo-Ann Fabrics and cut it into the approximate shape I needed and sewed it up with some fishing braid for durability. There is a bungee around the bottom to secure it to the net after placing it over the hoop. I think they are commercially available somewhere although I forget the company name. Started with an "A". That's where I got the idea actually. I'll let you know if I remember it...

Question. Dan had mentioned a small indicator for dry flies? What exactly are those?

Dan can correct me, but it is a very small piece of a stick on indicator that you put on your leader when you are fishing really small dry flies that you loose track of.
Good question! They would be the same adhesive foam indicators that we use for nymph rigs, only just cut a little smaller. They are pretty nice when fishing tricos, midges, and small BWO's since they act as a visual indicator of where your fly is. Hope that clears things up!

My pack organizing is easier to show in person. There is a lot going on in my pack but the way I have everything is what works for me and how I fish.

My dad and brother tease me for carrying so much haha things like toiled paper and such. But hey, you never know when you might need it ;)
But the people complaining/tease us about carrying too much gear, are always the same guys “borrowing” leaders, strike indicators, hemos, beer, TP, flies, tippet, cigars, glasses, and oddly enough those same guys always forget their wallet at lunch too.😂

3:00 why not fish a double dry (like a size 20 and a 14)? Instead of 1 with an indicator? Not trying to criticize, just curious to hear your thoughts!
That's a good point, and I actually do that a fair amount with emergers. Sometimes I get a little lazy though and the small pinch-on is a bit quicker and sometimes less maintenance to keep two flies dry vs just one. One thing I've found with the double dry rig is my small fly lands real close to the larger one due to the small tippet I use from the big dry to the small one. The small foam pinch-on indy doesn't seem to create as much of a hinge so my leader turns over my fly a little better. Honestly, I don't think I prefer one over the other though and tend to switch it up often. Great comment though!

Stomach pump? You really don’t need one of those. If you’re catching, you know what they are biting on. If you’re not catching, you can’t pump their stomach anyway. Besides, something mounted to your chest is not something you want in a fast Montana freestone.
