Well done, You built a nice boat. There is an old Sailors saying; “Nothing is half worth doing, as just tinkering with boats. Maintenance is just part of sea fairing life. I built Jeff’s Nova Scotian Dory as my “Practice Boat.” I liked it so much that I went fishing quite a bit rather than jump on my original goal of building Jeff Spira’s Caladesi 20’ Carolina Dory. In the months I was running about with my Nova Scotian Dory, my wife informed me that the Caladesi was going to be a bit small for all the people that now wanted to be on board when the “Big” boat was done. So I just completed Jeff’s Key Largo 24’ Carolina Dory. Watching you show folks how you did all the details, I feel bad I haven’t put a video together. Have lots of photos & a video or two also. Guess it will have to be on my chore list. Don’t know about you, but those nights, weekends & holidays building my boat made many a fond memory, that I will look back on and smile the rest of my life. But nothing beats the memory of that very first time you take your boat out, a boat you built from raw materials. I bought eight of Jeff’s plans before his web site went down, but think I am done building for a while. Thanks for sharing. Your video made me smile. Even pointed out to my wife some of the same mistake I made, that were in your video. Thanks again. Seems we should have a Spira Dory Club.
The dory was the second of three Spira boats I built. The first, a Mackinaw drift boat, was for practice. The dory because I wanted an easy to build, ocean-going fishing boat. Then I build a Mission Bay skiff for small waters that don't allow motors, a boat I could haul in the back of my truck. But loading it onto the truck when backed down a steep launch was more than I could handle. It's on a trailer now. My next boat build will be an Atkin "Cabin Boy" sailing dinghy. But not today.
@@OregonOldTimer Cool. So you have the bug too. We need a club for Spira Boat Builders. Joking… Kinda. I have eight of Jeff’s plans. As a Retired Engineer, I am confident I could study his plans and come up with similar designs of almost any length. Boats 26’ and smaller interest me the most. That said, I won’t be building another 24’ any time soon. That was a lot of work. But I am considering another 17’ Carolina Style Dory. I would have to draw up the plans that I want. I did not get those plans before Jeff’s webpage was taken down.
I watched your fishing and crabbing videos and am intrigued with your boat! 🙂 She's lovely. What's her history and make, do you know? Or did you perhaps even build her yourself? Length? 18(?) Love the flat bottom and dagger/center board set up. I've had several flat bottom wooden boats with centerboards and loved them all. 👍👍👍
Here is the link to my building the late Jeff Spira's "Tillamook" dory. ua-cam.com/video/4zZbsgFyyI4/v-deo.html I've not seen daggerboards in any boats other than sailboats. I didn't think I could be the only person who thought of it.
Now that is a classy door:!
Wait 'til you see the next one.

Yep, finally finished and back on the water.
The work on the boat is never "done". 😉👍
True.
