Him saying I cant breath but not yet, I got to give it everything. THen him dying like a soldier. Even tho Eren and mikasa were basically always kind of protecting him. He stood on his own. Him saying eren will see the ocean for both of us..(.tears dude). But now looking back, knowing he lived. Kind of cheapens that.
@Walter White the thing about Erwin is that we got his full backstory and character development in season 2 and the first half of season 3, so I started to care about him... I understand why you feel like that about Armin coming back to life but at least we can agree that it wasn't a cheap resurrection.

Major props to all the voice actors, especially Eren's, Mikasa's, and Hange's. The pain in their voices made me cry pretty damn hard. The direction in this episode was also amazing. No intro and no music until the end. Just voice acting and sound effects. Even felt pretty bad for Bertoldt, whom I never thought I could feel sorry for after the hundred of thousands he killed. This whole episode was just pain lol :(
I'm surprised they made Bertolt go out like that. He already said he could accept whatever the outcome of the battle would be because the world is cruel. But then he begs for help at the very end? I felt like they ruined his character development with that scene.

Similarly to when Floch joined the Survey Corps, he was confident that he could succeed, then when he's facing death head on he chickens out. Bertoldt was the same, he was confident, but then he wakes up with his arms and legs gone and a Titan grabbing him. Confusion form that alone would make anyone scream and beg for help.

No opening, there's no OST and just silence all throughout up until the injection was given, and then it all ends with "Sayonara, world" in the ending. They really did a fantastic job conveying the atmosphere of the aftermath! Loved Eren's dedication to Armin as well! In his last moments, Armin entrusted everything to Eren and Eren in turn, fought for Armin until the very end. The voice-acting was also fantastic! Kaji (Eren) and Yui (Mikasa) really gave it their all, especially Yui. The way she portrayed Mikasa this episode did not disappoint. Her crying out as she was held back by Hange was just heartbreaking. Loved how it came full circle in a way with what Kenny said when it came to Levi picking Armin or Erwin. The way I saw it, Armin had a real dream and aspirations whereas Erwin was more driven by an obsession. Armin's ambitions surpassed Erwin's and was more long-term compared to what Erwin really wanted. That and Levi finally freed Erwin from his sense of responsibilities for those mountain of corpses he was hallucinating. Kenny basically alluded to the fact that death frees people from the hell of spending the rest of their lives being a slave to something. Bringing back Erwin would've brought him back to hell, and he really deserves to rest. Overall, it was really nice to see Kenny having a lasting effect on Levi here. Bertholdt's death screams was pretty sad and haunting for me. The way he cried out for his friends before realizing what was happening by how they were all staring back in horror and sadness, and then how he started calling out for Annie and Reiner...Just ouch. Sayonara Erwin, Bertholdt, Moblit, Marlo, all the scouts, and Hange's left eye...

Being a Survey corps soldier is basically like being in a professional soccer team, you won't see an ounce of fat on them. Carry too much fat and your movement is basically compromised and your a Titan snack.

Must have been really hard on Levi too. Other than Hange, Erwin was probably the last of his "old friends" from when he joined the survey corps. Erwin would always gamble, he never thought ahead of time. Erwin was a commander after Keith resigned for only a couple of years but only when Eren showed up with his power Erwin could do something. Prior to that, he couldn't change shit on his own before Eren graduated. He would use others to achieve his goals.

It was subtle, but the question Erwin asked was the question that got his father killed. The anime never told you what the question was until that moment. That question alone set Erwin on the path to take extreme risk and sacrifice so many men and women in the Survey Corps. For the sake of finding the truth, he became a devil. Perfect set-up for the basement episode.
Erwin's bravery, couragness and leadership skills without him along the way, all survey cops would be dead and levi had long time given up. R.I.P Commander Erwin

Erwin specifically asked Levi to kill the Beast Titan and Levi failed, rendering Zeke's defeat Pyric victory. Levi still is my favorite character, but if the others hadn't taken out Bertholdt and Reiner (whom they also led escape for the same dumb reason). Then this would ALL have been for nothing, Levi was lucky they at least didn't let Bertholdt escape, otherwise they would have lost most of their corps and Erwin for NOTHING. Not sure why I used "bitched out", rather what I meant was that Levi just stood there and watched as the titan on all fours escaped with Zeke. That was completely unrealistic, Levi would have shot a hook into that thing and given pursuit immediately rather than let Zeke escape.

It's about Armins dream, he knew that if Erwin accomplished his dream by going to the basement (maybe) he might give up or not fight as hard. But Armins dream is the incarnation of what the Survey Corps stand for - exploration outside the walls. He chose the leader who had more "longevity"
What an amazing episode! and just to clarify on why levi ended up choosing armin in the end the whole point of the flashback of Kenny was to emphasize what he taught Levi about human nature. Everyone is "drunk" on something (their dream). When they lose that thing to be drunk on, they're not the same person. Levi recognized that Erwin's dream was limited (going to the basement) and that he wouldnt be the same after they got there. Armin's dream is one that is never ending. Armin wanted to see the outside world. The ocean, the desert, volcanoes, the arctic. Levi knew that Erwin would have a very limited time of usefulness even if he was revived. Levi revived Armin because he saw the potential.

What. an. episode! No background music, no op. This episode was dialed up to 11 out 10 on the seriousness meter. The tension between characters was so well done. To quote Sam from iCarly: "You can feel the tension in the air...". Amazing! I didn't think they'd be able to stretch the decision between Armin or Erwin into 22 minutes but they did! And best of all....the next episode! I can't wait a week! It's literally titled "The Basement". No shits or giggles. Just straight to the part we've waited YEARS for!

Hell, I read the manga and was still unbelievably moved by this episode. Knowing what happens doesn’t change a thing because this episode is all about the emotion of the ‘choice’ and they did a fantastic job with it.
KorYouZ Definitely. They both have a similar feel since they both have a medieval setting with inside politics and a touch of mythical stuff but AOT definitely pulls off the misery and circumstances of humanity’s flaws better. Not to mention the way it concludes all character arcs in fitting fashions. No one is perfect and no decision is without consequence. Of course it is not without flaws and tbh the manga can go very slowly with certain arcs but for the most part it is better than GOT as of now.

GOT had so much potential but dumb and dumber threw it all out the window.
KorYouZ Yeah, D & D ruined GOT, especially with that last season. Completely rushed story that destroyed so many character arcs and left everyone feeling unsatisfied. Even the character deaths were meh. That wasn’t even a “bittersweet” ending, it was just bad writing overall. Many of the things that happened could have worked with better writing but the execution left much to be desired. The writers have been unimaginative for quite a while, trying to sustain the show on “shock” values without any build up but they really ruined it for the final season. Tbh if GOT was an anime, all of seasons 5-8 would have been filler anyways because they had no more content other than the notes GRRM left for them. AOT at least has the advantage that it is all mostly written/drawn out so they don’t have to come up with anything random that does not fit the story or characters. The animation, soundtrack, etc. It’s all the studio though and they definitely put enough effort into each episode to make each scene amazing.

Right? And yet, I kinda did. I thought the whole thing was incredibly written. When you think that they are all teenagers here, and that Bertold saw the group of scouts looking at him, and realizing that no one was coming to his help, as his last words, he cried for Annie and Reiner. That was really poignant to me.
1:27 I had to write this as im in tears for a whole wealth of feelings. That moment, where Captian Levi has lost his only true friend and brother, while also the rebirth of Armin. Its a deliciously horrible thing they have done to the audience here. Our loss of Commander Irwin, his goals, his dreams now laid to rest. While our inherent joy, that Armin lives after a very brutal sacrifice. This is a situation of not, right vs wrong. Good choice vs bad choice. This is about (to me) those that have given all that they can muster, while those who still have so MUCH left to give. Im a 38 y/o man, ive been watching anime for decades at this point. AoT is hands down the best mainstream anime ever made. And the sound track playing on our emotions really seals the deal.

Major props to all the voice actors, especially Eren's, Mikasa's, and Hange's. The pain in their voices made me cry pretty damn hard.
The direction in this episode was also amazing. No intro and no music until the end. Just voice acting and sound effects. Even felt pretty bad for Bertoldt, whom I never thought I could feel sorry for after the hundred of thousands he killed.

I'm surprised they made Bertolt go out like that. He already said he could accept whatever the outcome of the battle would be because the world is cruel. But then he begs for help at the very end? I felt like they ruined his character development with that scene.

@@TheCelticD I thought the point of that was to remind the audience that he's only human. Similarly to when Floch joined the Survey Corps, he was confident that he could succeed, then when he's facing death head on he chickens out. Bertoldt was the same, he was confident, but then he wakes up with his arms and legs gone and a Titan grabbing him. Confusion form that alone would make anyone scream and beg for help.

No opening, there's no OST and just silence all throughout up until the injection was given, and then it all ends with "Sayonara, world" in the ending. They really did a fantastic job conveying the atmosphere of the aftermath!
Loved Eren's dedication to Armin as well! In his last moments, Armin entrusted everything to Eren and Eren in turn, fought for Armin until the very end.
The voice-acting was also fantastic! Kaji (Eren) and Yui (Mikasa) really gave it their all, especially Yui. The way she portrayed Mikasa this episode did not disappoint. Her crying out as she was held back by Hange was just heartbreaking.
Loved how it came full circle in a way with what Kenny said when it came to Levi picking Armin or Erwin. The way I saw it, Armin had a real dream and aspirations whereas Erwin was more driven by an obsession. Armin's ambitions surpassed Erwin's and was more long-term compared to what Erwin really wanted. That and Levi finally freed Erwin from his sense of responsibilities for those mountain of corpses he was hallucinating. Kenny basically alluded to the fact that death frees people from the hell of spending the rest of their lives being a slave to something. Bringing back Erwin would've brought him back to hell, and he really deserves to rest. Overall, it was really nice to see Kenny having a lasting effect on Levi here.
Bertholdt's death screams was pretty sad and haunting for me. The way he cried out for his friends before realizing what was happening by how they were all staring back in horror and sadness, and then how he started calling out for Annie and Reiner...Just ouch.
Sayonara Erwin, Bertholdt, Moblit, Marlo, all the scouts, and Hange's left eye...

after seeing this episode and remembering when i read the chapter in the manga it made me happy when eren handed mikasa the L later one, dam she is annoying and if she took the injection by force and used it, levi out ranks them all its insubordination, literally emotion driven meat head.
Man even though i knew Bertholdt was gonna die and that he had it coming/deserved it, im still at a loss for words with his death. When you read into his story in the manga you cant help pitty him.

Must have been really hard on Levi too. Other than Hange, Erwin was probably the last of his "old friends" from when he joined the survey corps. I like how Levi's response to Erwin's passing was a simple "oh." with a forlorn look on his face - it was a perfect expression of grief in line with Levi's personality.

@@helloworld-sl2lw That's Hange's fault she is a bit dumb at the moment. They are not lost without Erwin, they are lost without a proper leader who can cook a proper plan and see ten steps ahead. Erwin would always gamble, he never thought ahead of time.
Erwin was a commander after Keith resigned for only a couple of years but only when Eren showed up with his power Erwin could do something. Prior to that, he couldn't change shit on his own before Eren graduated. He would use others to achieve his goals.

It was subtle, but the question Erwin asked was the question that got his father killed. The anime never told you what the question was until that moment. That question alone set Erwin on the path to take extreme risk and sacrifice so many men and women in the Survey Corps. For the sake of finding the truth, he became a devil.

Levi took a risk by letting Zeke live, why? because he hoped he could (maybe) save one soldier (but really Erwin). That is what I meant. Erwin specifically asked Levi to kill the Beast Titan and Levi failed, rendering Zeke's defeat Pyric victory.
Levi still is my favorite character, but if the others hadn't taken out Bertholdt and Reiner (whom they also led escape for the same dumb reason). Then this would ALL have been for nothing, Levi was lucky they at least didn't let Bertholdt escape, otherwise they would have lost most of their corps and Erwin for NOTHING.
Not sure why I used "bitched out", rather what I meant was that Levi just stood there and watched as the titan on all fours escaped with Zeke. That was completely unrealistic, Levi would have shot a hook into that thing and given pursuit immediately rather than let Zeke escape.

It's about Armins dream, he knew that if Erwin accomplished his dream by going to the basement (maybe) he might give up or not fight as hard. But Armins dream is the incarnation of what the Survey Corps stand for - exploration outside the walls. He chose the leader who had more "longevity"
He still got Hange and his decision to save Armin for sure have earned him respect from Eren and Mikasa.

What an amazing episode! and just to clarify on why levi ended up choosing armin in the end the whole point of the flashback of Kenny was to emphasize what he taught Levi about human nature. Everyone is "drunk" on something (their dream). When they lose that thing to be drunk on, they're not the same person. Levi recognized that Erwin's dream was limited (going to the basement) and that he wouldnt be the same after they got there. Armin's dream is one that is never ending. Armin wanted to see the outside world. The ocean, the desert, volcanoes, the arctic. Levi knew that Erwin would have a very limited time of usefulness even if he was revived. Levi revived Armin because he saw the potential.

If it were to come down to a fight where Eren's life is in danger Mikasa would murder pretty much anyone 1v1 lol.

I was not ready for this episode even despite being a manga reader. The voice acting, the direction, the emotion. It was just unbelievable. This episode broke me. Especially the part when Erwin said, "Levi, thank you." That's all he needed to hear. When Mikasa started crying and Hange reflecting on how she wanted to also save others.. hundreds of them. I was in tears. Attack on Titan, you have outdid yourselves...........

RIP to one of the icons of attack on titan...Berthold's colossal titan,he was the first titan we saw in episode 1 in that iconic scene of him looking over the wall,no other titan looks more badass than him (in my opinion) RIP God of destruction

No background music, no op. This episode was dialed up to 11 out 10 on the seriousness meter. The tension between characters was so well done. To quote Sam from iCarly: "You can feel the tension in the air...". Amazing! I didn't think they'd be able to stretch the decision between Armin or Erwin into 22 minutes but they did!
And best of all....the next episode! I can't wait a week! It's literally titled "The Basement". No shits or giggles. Just straight to the part we've waited YEARS for!

Hell, I read the manga and was still unbelievably moved by this episode. Knowing what happens doesn’t change a thing because this episode is all about the emotion of the ‘choice’ and they did a fantastic job with it.

agreed 100%. I used to laugh at people who were saying AOT > GOT. but after season 8, attack on titans is undoubtedly the best show.
KorYouZ Definitely. They both have a similar feel since they both have a medieval setting with inside politics and a touch of mythical stuff but AOT definitely pulls off the misery and circumstances of humanity’s flaws better. Not to mention the way it concludes all character arcs in fitting fashions. No one is perfect and no decision is without consequence. Of course it is not without flaws and tbh the manga can go very slowly with certain arcs but for the most part it is better than GOT as of now.
@@roxanneanders8326 exactly. this anime is just perfect imo. excellent sound tracks, very interesting storyline. it took the complexity and depth of characters into a whole new level that I've never seen in any other anime. even though I'm caught up with the manga, I still shed tears over this episode which is a first for me because I knew what was gonna happen and still. GOT had so much potential but dumb and dumber threw it all out the window.
KorYouZ Yeah, D & D ruined GOT, especially with that last season. Completely rushed story that destroyed so many character arcs and left everyone feeling unsatisfied. Even the character deaths were meh. That wasn’t even a “bittersweet” ending, it was just bad writing overall. Many of the things that happened could have worked with better writing but the execution left much to be desired. The writers have been unimaginative for quite a while, trying to sustain the show on “shock” values without any build up but they really ruined it for the final season.
Tbh if GOT was an anime, all of seasons 5-8 would have been filler anyways because they had no more content other than the notes GRRM left for them. AOT at least has the advantage that it is all mostly written/drawn out so they don’t have to come up with anything random that does not fit the story or characters. The animation, soundtrack, etc. It’s all the studio though and they definitely put enough effort into each episode to make each scene amazing.
I couldn't give better details on how these writers ruined the show. well said my friend . it's just really annoying and frustrating when you have high expectations for a tv show that you have been invested in for a long period of time to be just ruined like that. definitely not watching anything these 2 are involved in. glad we have AOT to make up for it lol.

Also I've said this from Season 2. AOT isn't one of the best Anime of all time. It's one of the best series straight up.

Right? And yet, I kinda did. I thought the whole thing was incredibly written. When you think that they are all teenagers here, and that Bertold saw the group of scouts looking at him, and realizing that no one was coming to his help, as his last words, he cried for Annie and Reiner. That was really poignant to me.
One person wanted to see the basement, the other wanted to see the world.

I had to write this as im in tears for a whole wealth of feelings. That moment, where Captian Levi has lost his only true friend and brother, while also the rebirth of Armin. Its a deliciously horrible thing they have done to the audience here. Our loss of Commander Irwin, his goals, his dreams now laid to rest. While our inherent joy, that Armin lives after a very brutal sacrifice. This is a situation of not, right vs wrong. Good choice vs bad choice. This is about (to me) those that have given all that they can muster, while those who still have so MUCH left to give. Im a 38 y/o man, ive been watching anime for decades at this point. AoT is hands down the best mainstream anime ever made. And the sound track playing on our emotions really seals the deal.
