    This is the absolute realest car content out right now.
    Tony, you and your crew are killing it.
    It takes so much work to put out weekly content like this .
    From finding and imagining up projects to actually doing the work and funding it and then the absolutely tedious work of editing.
    Just wanted to let you know,
    Thanks.

    That balancer is off a '80's Chevy
    The timing cover had the tab on it to look behind waterpump.
    Since the long water pump made it difficult to read it on the side.
    That balancer is thinner on back side.
    So it hasn't slipped

    I never trust a harmonic balance marks I go off of what the engines does likes by sound. Never had a problem. I learned that when old dirt track racer. If you want to time it right without a gun, get it running halfway decent, put the parking brake on, put it in drive with your foot on the brake, bring up the bring up the idol 2500. Advance the timing. When the back tires start to break loose, lock down the distributor. It's never gone wrong.

    Hey guys, just a tip for distributor installation....if you point your distributor where you want it and get the cam and distributor gears meshed, you can bump the engine over slowly and the distributor will align with the oil pump shaft and fall in place. No need to mess around with a long screwdriver to get everything lined up. Your timing will still be close because the gears are meshed together. Bring the distributor back to #1 and grab the timing light. You'll have the engine timed in half the time.

    • @thenewBH
      @thenewBH Місяць тому +5

      Rapidly tapping the dizzy up and down like a rabid skunk will often get the oil pump to wiggle around and line up, too, as long as its kinda sorta close.

    It wasn't hard to tell that your timing was late, One little pull on the distributor and no more backfire. Through the years Chevy used different timing locations on the timing cover along with the balancers. One mismatch will cause the same problem as a bad balancer. One hack you can use is to get the engine on top dead center, take an old distributor cap and grind the number one terminal off so you can see where the rotor is in relation to the cap.

    Oh man, I feel your pain on this one! Same issue hit me with a brand new crate motor from GM. The vehicles it was listed as a direct replacement for had different harmonic balancers and timing locations. The timing indicator they sent with the engine mounted off the timing cover bolts but the truck engine I was replacing had it directly on the cover. So I ordered up a new balancer for the truck application not knowing it wasn't going to line up. Getting the engine to run right put the timing so far off on reading it was just making nervous. Ended up tearing the timing cover off thinking they skipped a tooth on the chain only to find it was fine, tested the balancer at TDC and found the issue. I got lucky and had the old engine still and was able to verify the differences. Even GM neglected to provide the information needed yet they covered everything else with the instructions required to install.

    You guys stuck with the engine problem. Kudos.
    Unfortunately you were using a timing light as the only tool for figuring out the problem.
    The compression test should have told the story.
    Don't be afraid of turning the distributor to adjust timing.
    As you get more experience, you will recognize ignition timing problems.
    Keep up the work. You did finally figure out the problem with the harmonic balancer. It just took alot more work than needed.
    Both of you will get better with time and experience.
    Again, kudos for sticking with it.

    Love the channel. A couple comments: the damper ring may have slipped, however Chevy had at least three different timing mark locations. This damper looked like a late model one ( the way the back is recessed is the tell tale ) that was meant to use a pointer that was at 12 o'clock. You timed it by looking down behind the water pump. It looked like your timing tab was the bolt on one in the more common 2 o'clock position. This engine was most likely assembled from a mish mash of parts. All this being said it is still possible the damper ring slipped. I am a retired Auto Shop teacher and before that an ASE master tech with 20 years of turning wrenches for a living. When teaching I had a student with a ford F-250 with a 460. It ran bad so I went to check the timing. The timing mark would occasionally appear then disappear and jumped around. The damper ring was just spinning on the hub loosely. only the pulley kept it from coming off. Sorry for the long post, but wanted to add my 2 cents.

    I'd never have even thought about the Balancer rotating like that, something I haven't seen on newer stuff, a SBC thing! I bet you were so relieved to see the cam was good when it came out, at least its not some super tight nightmare engine to work on (rear timing chain Audi), easy enough to work on! Great content!

    • @StayTunedTA
      @StayTunedTA  Місяць тому +1

      I've def seen it spin on the Ford, but apparently on the SBC your balancer has to match the front cover timing marks so maybe this didn't spin just was matched wrong.

    It’s been said but SBC some are marked on the top of the balancer some are slightly towards the driver side. On an unknown engine best bet to just pull the valve covers off and verify TDC. Move the timing while it’s running and you can get a feel for where it’s at.
    Stay tuned is still one of the best automotive UA-cam shows.

    I usually skip the timing light. Drop in the distributor w the rotor pointing correctly, run plug wires correctly. When it runs sluggishly like you had, advance the ignition timing until, while cranking, the starter grunts, grunts, grunts. Then retard the timing a little at a time until it cranks and starts well. The IG timing is close, if it pings while driving, retard the timing a little more.

    Yeah, I've run into spun balances, and also worn out crank key slots in a few cars over the years. Tough thing to diagnose. It's common enough that comparing the timing marks to actual TDC is something I do relatively early in the process just so I know my tests involing timing are valid.

    I keep looking at that front bumper thinking holy shit that's a lotta metal, when all modern cars are just a plastic clip on shell over foam, there is probably more steel in that bumper than all the front end panels combined on most new cars, its such an awesome looking vehicle from every angle, awesome work bringing it back to life, bummer about the balancer, what a fkaround
