In this video, I show the results a 10 year old gets from practicing a specific routine that I created for her. Her upper register (high notes) and her sound concept is advanced for someone her age. She has overtones in her sound that create a great blend of our sounds when we perform a duet together. The fundamental-combination-tone is produced when our intonation is perfect - it's difficult to hear from using the simple microphone on the iPhone, but you'll get the idea...
    Thanks!

Just like your wonderful mentors, Mr. Baca and Mr. Adam, you're nurturing a new generation of solid and well-rounded trumpet players. Your careful and patient approach to teaching will improve the technique of players at any level, including me (a comeback player). Very impressive video editing skills as well!

I doubt Ruby knows how incredibly blessed she is to have a father / trumpet teacher as she has. I'm a 75 years old working on being a 'come back player' who suffered my first trumpet lessons with my father, who was incredibly impatient with me as a ten year old boy. I dreaded going down to our basement practice room with my dad as he tried to teach me how to count by pounding my leg, and being angry with me. I did want to please him, and in my youth struggled with all kinds of issues, anger and anxiety with the horn, though I loved the sound of a beautiful trumpet. I could never have an open free sound and had zero upper register range I so desperately wanted.
I so wish I'd had a teacher like you Jeremy.
But here I am, 75, and haven't given up on the dream to one day play with beautiful expressive sound and range to play high C, maybe even E, but perhaps that might be asking too much.
Thank you for your inspirational UA-cam videos.
You're a brilliant player and teacher.
    Sincerely,
    Larry Peltz

      Hi Jeremy,
Thank you so very much for your kind reply to my post. I should add an important PS. My dad being my first trumpet teacher was surely a double edged sword. Yes he was harsh and impatient with my playing efforts, and yet because of his deep love for the trumpet and music especially jazz, he engendered in me a love for trumpet and music. I will never forget how excited he was when he brought home the newly released LP, Tempestous
Trumpet by the immortal Doc Severinsen, I think 1962.
Jeremy I made a poster of your 5 keys to improved trumpet playing and have it on my music stand. Before practice I read and memorize these great bits of instruction. So thank you again. Please keep me posted when you have new You Tube clips!
      Sincerely, Larry Peltz

Unfair advantage, and i don't mean this in a bad way but imagine me as a kid in the 80's having a pro trumpet player dad and all i heard as i was crawling around or in my crib, were clark etudes and his wonderful sound concept. Babies will pick up a language as I'm sure kids with pro musician parents get a sound concept or clark etudes embedded in their young minds. What a lucky kid, as she gets older, she'll soon realize that all the hard work she is doing will most likely get her a full ride/music scholarship through college. Love how you always seem to keep it positive when you teach her. Wish more educators would mimic your style. Peace from Las Vegas--

You’ve made such a great point, and it’s so true. By the way, thank you for the compliments in your post, as well! Ultimately, I don’t think she’ll go into music - I sense her heart is in cooking or art/cartooning, or writing. I try to teach in a positive manner and encourage her, but I don’t want to push her or “guilt” her into practicing. We’ll see what she chooses and it’ll be a fun process! Peace back at you from NYC!

@@jeremymilos The work ethic she is learning will be invaluable. She is learning what is possible when effort is put into it. That’s the most important life lesson you could possibly give her. I know I’m preaching to the choir, but it’s a wonderful thing to see in young people. Bravo!

Excellent advisory on avoiding shortcuts/magic answers. Focus the fundamentals; sound concept, airflow, efficiency, no tension. Put the tools out on the table and pick the ones that work best for the student at the right time.

Hi, Dario! Good question… I started her off with a few simple instructions, and then asked her to put the sound straight-out, in front of her. That helped her to develop her embouchure to play these notes. By the way, thanks for the e-mail! I’ll reply in the early afternoon! Hope you’re well…

The reason I chose that Allman Brothers song was a tribute to the son of my teacher, William Adam. Bill, his son, loved the Allman brothers, when I thought I hated them - but then he played that song for me, No One To Run With, and I changed my mind, over a beer! or two!
