You r one of the best WC teachers on UT. I'm 78 and had taught acrylics for 30 years, breaking it down to each simplest step is best. Thank you so much.
My husband is a Vietnam Veteran. He is dabbling in watercolor painting. He gets frustrated because he can’t get things to come out like he wants…which I totally understand because I do acrylic painting. So I’m sending this video to him to watch. You may never hear from him because of his PTSD and dementia. But this is very therapeutic for him. He is 73 years old/o.
I hope he enjoys it, Debra, and so grateful for his service!! That is A-Okay, I understand. :D Happy painting!
God bless you! Thank you for your service! I'm 71... so Vietnam was a big part of my world. Peace!
I also am a -1
I am 78 and just beginning my watercolor journey, so I understand when what I see in my mind is not what appears on the paper. A few years ago, someone said, “you cannot compare my chapter 22 to your chapter 1,” which means that they have had a lot of practice and I have not. So now, when I paint I just think of each painting as play and if I think that it comes out pretty good, that’s a bonus. Another thing that I have found is that when I’m not happy with the painting, I put it in a separate box with all of my “experiments” and when I look at it a few weeks later, sometimes it doesn’t look so bad. I hope your husband finds the joy and painting where the process is more fun than the outcome. Who knows, he might develop a new style like Picasso did 😊
Love the step-by- step approach. I am 76 and just now attempting to draw and watercolor. This has been most helpful! Thank you.
I'm so happy to hear that! It's an honor to have you here. :D

I am 61 and just venturing into water colour and drawing also.. I did draw and paint as a teen but life got in the way... Loving my second chance
Well I beat you all at 84 and have only taken up painting the last couple years! Alex is a really good teacher!
I'm 63 in May of 2024, and I'm the same way. I painted just a little when I was younger and 3 children later..... I thought it would be a good time to get started again but the grandchildren, 6 of them came along. What a beautiful Blessing they were, and a not so young me thought... I'd better get to it and start painting again and here I am.........🎉🎉 Not to toot my own horn, but I've been using my 🖌️ 🖌️ 🖌️ brushes and having so much FUN😊😊😊❤❤❤TY !!!
Best creator I’ve found on YT. You teach like you were made for it. Can’t wait to learn more. Thank you.
Very professional and it’s nice to see a UA-camr who takes the time to do their hair and makeup for a presentation.
AMEN YOUR ARTWORK IS BEAUTIFUL ❤
I love how you teach. I am learning so much!
Alex! Your artwork is gorgeous! Take me away!
I can draw a poppy 7
Your step-by-step has been so helpful for me! I am not confident at drawing, and I really don't like what I draw. But when I follow you, mine of course doesn't come out exactly like yours, but the general idea is way better than anything I've tried on my own. I'm so glad I found your tutorials! You are a gem.
I just watched your video and really enjoyed the way you talked us all through the process of drawing and painting poppies. Thank you❤
Awesome channel Alex! Glad I found you. Thank you so much for sharing!!
I love your tutorial so much. Thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge with us
You’re such a fantastic instructor! Top notch, for sure. And, I really love the step-by-step instructions.
Love your art and teaching technique!
Love the step by step!! I’m watching the replay! Thank you!!!❤
Thank you for a beautifully detailed art lesson! I’ve learned so much ❤
Absolutely beautiful 😍
Absolutely beautiful work
I just found your channel. I’ve been an artist for many years, partly self taught along with classes and workshops. I paint and draw every day. I love your style of teaching and loved the loose painting part. I’m always trying to improve on my loose painting technique. I subscribed and look forward to more of your posts.
Welcome!! Aww, thank you for saying that; it means a lot. :D It's an honor to have you!
Just found you and am very excited to try this. I would say I am about a 1.5 painter. Just getting back into it. Thanks for sharing this with us. 🥰🥰🥰
Love how easy it is to follow along with you
I’m so happy you’ve decided to re-release these and I found them. Love your easy style and step by step approach. I’m over the pond in UK hopefully I can catch all your new tutorials. 😊. Thank you so much.
Thank you for this ,as someone whose only just began exploring my artistic side, I appreciate the step by step tutorial & it really helped boost my confidence❤Vireka 🇿🇦South Africa
I took your recent Watercolor week class and I am over the moon with what you have taught me! I watched the peony and poppy video today and wow! My contour lines are improving and my leaves are 100% better than they were at the beginning of the week! However, without following you step by step I feel that I will go back to being in preschool art!! I do not yet see the shapes but I know that will come in time!
Oh Paula, that is so great to hear!! Yes, absolutely, give yourself time and grace as you learn. :D
~Rachel
Great teacher and artist! Learn so much in this tutorial ❤
Thank you. I am 79 and have been painting for 5 years. It is easier for me to see the whole flower painted, and then to see it painted in sections. I paint loose flowers, and I am self taught. I call my paintings "fantasy." I’m from Laredo, by the way!
Thanks you are a wonderful teacher Thanks for charing your knowledge with us.
I am enjoying your lovely work from the other side of the world in the currently grey but usually glorious technicolour Island of Gozo in the Maltese archipeligo in the Mediterranean to which I retired from West Cork in Ireland some 10 years ago. Now 85 I cannot remember not having a paint box and being encouraged to use it. It is so useful now to have things simplified and have never thought about your system for leaves in particular. Thank you for your inspirational tutorials.
Thank you for sharing that, Maureen!! That's so cool and encouraging. :D
Loved this! I drew and painted along. I'm about a 4 with drawing skills but, think I managed a 6-7 with your lesson!
I’m sad I missed this!!! I would have loved to win this watercolor tin!!! 🥰
Thank you for this tutorial! Watercolor fast became my favorite medium! 💞💞💞
You give me hope!! :) Thank you for the tutorial, Alex.
Aww, I'm so glad!! :D
Alex, thank you. I'm so glad I found your channel.
This was fantastic! I had so much fun …. I didn’t think I could ever paint a poppy!
I'm late to the party! I just found you and thankgoodness. You're great and I've already learned so much. Thank You.
Not only could we hear the thunder…your table shook …wow. Thank you for this. It is soooooooo helpful. ❤
Really enjoyed drawing along with you on this one - though I am just a beginner. You made it easy to follow and lots of fun. Thank you .
Just opted into the watercolor week! So excited 🎉
Woohoo!!
This was so great!!!
Love the step by step . I'm from the UK and just found you
Just discovered your channel. Really helpful. Thank you.
I just discovered your UA-cam channel. I can’t wait to get home from my appointment this morning to create my own poppies. I feel like you explained it so well that I feel like i can do it too. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for drawing with the Sharpie,, it is so easy to see.
Niiice!! Just found your channel. Appreciate the slow, step by step explanation and demonstration. Very good for beginners. Thank you!!
I'm loving this tutorial, today is my birthday, & I promised myself an art day, so this is perfect, I think glazing on watercolor, is when the work is dry, to go over with clear water, which brings everything together, only to be careful so as not to wake up the paints again. ❤❤❤❤❤
First time watching you. Love the dahlias. I'm a beginner water color artist. I would say I was a 4 at drawing.
Someone in another group posted about your Wildflower Watercolor Week tutorial and I watched it. I signed up and am looking forward to it. I also heard about your Garden Studio, and I was intrigued. However, I am very leary about paying for something until I have thoroughly researched it. I was not sure about your teaching style. After watching this video and seeing the way you teach, I am impressed! I have never watched a watercolorist who explains the process as well as you. I'm signing up for your Garden Studio as well. I want to say that I am impressed and excited to follow and learn from you! Thank you!
Thank you for saying that!! It means SO much to hear... I'm really looking forward to having you for Watercolor Week AND in The Garden Studio- it's going to be amazing. :D
I love your easy technique for drawing. I also love the background storm noises. You couldn’t have planned it better for ambiance.
It was wonderful to listen to the thunderstorm in the background as well as the step-by-step.Sharpie drawned easy to follow tututorial. Please please please do more of these.
I like you demonstrating first and then doing the drawing. I am a -2 on the scale. You are a great tutor. Thanks so much.
Beautiful work. I’ve been looking for a Realistic Floral Watercolorist. Poppy 10!
I love your step by step also.
The thunder was perfect timing 😂 let’s get started 😂
Excellent tutorial.
Great tutorial!
Yes!
I just discovered your channel and love your encouraging vibe:)
Just discovered you and loved this tutorial! Not only did I find you easy to listen to and watch, but the step by step direction was great and I will be giving this a go! I also loved the thunderstorm in the background ...... I love a good thunderstorm and we don't get too many here in the UK! FYI I rate my drawing skills at around a 4, but I'm sure following your tutorial it will get to a 8!! ❤
Thank you, I actually have really loved this watercolour class … I’m also very new and enjoyed feeling like I could do this !!
Good teacher! Love the realistic botanicals. You should be successful.
Alex I thank you from the bottom of my watercolour frustrated heart. After your video I walked away from the table while looking at my drawing and cried. I cried because I was elated with the result. You broke everything down beautifully. I can't wait to make a painting!
@sjkoz24 oh my word, that makes me SO happy, thank you for saying that!! See?? You CAN do this!! :D
❤ I Love,Love, LOVE your step by step instructions and all your painting 🖌️🎨 information..you are a wonderfully Magical Teacher......Thank You so much for the video 😊.
❤Im watching on replay. I love the poppy tutorial!
You’re such a great teacher. Love the step by steps, I have watched a couple of times already and did each one with you. It is very relaxing and enjoyable.
Your voice is comforting
Thanks for putting this out there‼️
I’m sorry I’m watching this time. I love your work a lot. Love how you showed the drawings. This gave me more confidant with how to shade also. Being looser your painting takes away fear of accomplishment. 💖💖💖
Just found your channel. I’m in my 70’s and looking forward to following along I’m probably a 1 out of 10.
My first here! I love your class!
I did only one sketch along with the video, but I did more than 2 petals on my full-grown poppy and one bud. I will have to (maybe) go back and maybe add another.
Hi Alex. I just stumbled across your Goldenrod tutorial. You are a fabulous instructor...I'm going to watch all of your videos. So glad you are doing videos again. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent!
Holy moly….. that IS super realistic!
This has been such a huge help! ….if you were nervous, it sure didn’t sound like it. The hail alone would have scared me out of my studio and into my basement!
Love the way you show and explain. And yessss- i hear those thunders loud and clear- and its funny or sad - coz here and now we have a very heavy and dry heat wave....
Hi I am an 3. Just found your channel. I’m also in Fort Worth yea
It would be incredibly helpful if you could draw the same flower 3-6 times for practice. I couldn’t follow along and n the second flower and it’s difficult to rewind UA-cam videos to rewatch the first flower.
I was able to sketch this poppy. Thank you so very much.
Absolutely gorgeous 😍
I would give myself a 3. I do prefer to see the finished product and then go step by step
I’m so disappointed that I missed your live! I saw this 13 days later! But I enjoyed this immensely and learned how to paint a poppy all different ways! Thank you so much for sharing your time and talent with all of us!
That's okay!! This lesson was from the archives, so it wasn't live this time, but still so fun to watch and learn from! I'm so glad you're enjoying, that means so much. :D
Sometimes I feel that watercolor is beyond my understanding. I like and enjoy you guys painting and enjoy it. But when I try trust me it's a nightmare for me. I truly appreciate your confidence.
Sooo cool !! Love your flower step tutorial!!
I drew it!! My score was a 1 out of 10 to be able to draw it! Thank you. ❤️🙏🏻
So glad I just subscribed! Thoroughly enjoying this!
Just found you. How wonderful! Thank you.
Mines a two!
Love your teaching technique. So sorry I missed this live, but as usual, I'm always a bit behind the others. lol Just subscribed and requested to join your FB group. Hopefully, I won't miss the next live. In the meantime, I'll watch the recorded streams. (BTW, I loved the thunder in the background at the beginning. Love thunderstorms.)
Welcome!! That's okay, this one was from the archives, so it wasn't live this time, but still really fun to watch. :D I can't wait to see more of you, it's an honor!
I am a 3-4. I really like your style of teaching! Thank you!
You weather is coming through very clear! I’m glad I’m at my place ! I’m worried for you though! I’m using pencil and will detail after painting!
Just found you Alex on UA-cam - loved your video - Thank you!!
Three letters... OMG!!!! ❤
You mentioned you have lived in Upstate NY. Whereabouts? I live 30 min from Canadian border...BTW...the Micron pen you showed was actually a Pigma. (Labeled such right above the words Micron.)...enjoyed this video and have subscribed! Thank you!!
I’m in North Louisiana.
Omgosh i just found you.. i love your style if drawing and teaching .. g'day from queensland Australia. Subbed and ready to learn
Just found you on UA-cam and love your work. I love water color I love oil and I love acrylic but my favorite. I think it's watercolor and I have the Hardest time, knowing when to stop or if it looks good. Like this one I was so afraid to do the flowers directly on the painting. I actually cut them out off of another paste piece of paper.
And I've actually looked like it's floating in the middle of Air
I would probably rate myself as #1.
I Alax, I just saw that this video is a couple of years old, so you may not remember, what color of watercolor did you use to paint the first poppy your drew. I thought that the color was so pretty. Thank you, Suzie
Hi Suzie,
I can't say 100%, but it's very likely that the color Alex is using is Pyrrol Scarlet (which is warmer) or Quinacridone Rose (which is a cooler red), or Permanent Alizarin Crimson. :D
~Rachel
@@alexkincaidart Thank you very much for getting back to me. I just signed up for Alex's newsletter, is that where we will learn about her on-line classes that she gives from time to time. suzie
I am a new subscriber, this is the very first video I have seen of yours. I’m excited to try this later today (super wee hours watching). I really appreciated the step by step explanation as well as stated references of description of “type” of lines to this line to make an entire poppy. I L😍ved watching you watercolor. I was so bummed you ended your stream so abruptly. It don’t seem like an hour at all, could’ve watched you easily for three hours straight. lol I hope you do many more lives. I was excited to learn you are here in Fort Worth, TX!! Very cool. I live on the other side of North East side of Dallas. Thank you again for this, now I’m going to try and check out any more tutorial videos of yours to binge watch and try. God bless!
Scarlett, thank you for saying that!! It means a lot. :D I'd love to have you with me for Watercolor Week if you're interested- it seems right up your alley! www.alexkincaidart.com/watercolorweek
@@alexkincaidart this is absolutely right up my alley. I would absolutely love to get to do this. This weekly class sounds amazing. Is there another week you do this same type of event?
Sadly, I will be driving and staying in Austin, TX that same week, May 6th-8th. My friend is in hospice and my family will be headed there to say our goodbyes. I won’t be able to attend your class as it’s the same week.
Hi!I will give my self 5
I painted it too
Color pencils.
Option 1
I’ve been trying to decide which sable brush I want to invest in. I’ve heard really good things about Rosemary and Co.
Hi Amanda,
Rosemary and Co. is a good choice! Winsor and Newton Series 7 brushes are also great...
If it's in your budget, Kolinsky Sable brushes are about as top quality as you can get!
~Rachel
@@alexkincaidart I’ve been saving for a while. Thank you for your advice.
