Elvis owned this cover from the first note! His vocals, presence and energy took a fine song and made it legendary. Thanks for all the great music Mr Costello. It's been a wonderful journey.
His lyrics, with sarcasm and subtle indirect focus on many core issues has become #Legendary and I do Not use this Term lightly... Agree... He's carried me through the Ages Too! Thank You ELVIS COSTELLO for Such MEMORABLE Tuneage! ABSOLUTELY
Saw Elvis Several times, first time was at the Academy of Music, first band was Mink DeVille then Nick Lowe with Rockpile... Elvis came out and sang Allison achapelo, awesome.
I forgot how much I liked this song. I was an MTV kid and this video/song always stuck with me. 53 now and this sounds as fresh as when I was ~12. Thank you Elvis.
52 here and I was about to write the same thing. MTV introduced me to a lot of bands I would have never given the time of day to back then. Now I'm turning my 10 year old son onto Elvis C.
56 here & totally agree! So many great songs from back then... look up "I Know There's Something Going On" by Freda for a great flashback musical memory from the early 80s. 👍
What about Get Happy, Trust and Imperial Bedroom? His first six albums of original material are all masterpieces. Very very seldom, like very seldom does an artist come out the gate and drop such continuously amazing material. Elvis is king.
I'm here b/c i just learned this music video was filmed in my city Vancouver Canada in 1979. Many music videos & concert films have been filmed here from Bryan Adams, David Bowie, Loverboy, ZZ Top, Metallica, Michael Buble, D.O.A., Blink 182, etc
Best song ever and should be played out across the hilltops and cities at any time of crisis. Want it to be the one they play at my funeral when they put me in the ground... :)
Bruce Thomas's bass line in this song is fuckin' amazing! Complex enough to remain potent while retaining a solid skeleton with the Pete's drums, for the band to explore. Love it!
Man, I gotta say there’s a line in here that hit me real hard when I was a teenager 40 years ago, and it hits even harder now… So, where are the strong? And who are the trusted? And where is the harmony?
I'm 62 and remember this as one of the very first ever vids when MTV was launched in 1980. Was in college. All of my friends and I knew from this song that rock n' roll had changed. Nothing replaces this, ever. EVER.
+omfug I'm w/you. Had to turn off the news, and dive into music to clear my head from my spirit getting downhearted sometimes...... The world needs more peace, love and understand. Like your username, cbgb!
In the early Nineties, Lowe was feeling low. I think he said part of it was money. One day in the mail a check surprised him. It was a big check. He forgot or was unaware that the soundtrack to the hit movie, "The Bodyguard" used this song. The soundtrack was also a big hit. It was a big check. He was happy.
@Dominic O'reilly is that right? Nick says" yeah I love this song now, best one I ever wrote". Kinda funny with the Greats Paul Mccartney has written 75 or so songs better than Yesterday. Elvis Costello has probably written at least 75 songs better than Alison, and Dylan has at least 75 songs as good or better than Blowin' In The Wind, which they are most known for.
Phenomenal tune. Used to love to sing lead on it with the old band. My buddy Eddie Angel and Los Straitjackets now tours with Nick Lowe! You know what makes this record? Oh, the melody, the lyrics, Elvis, but really, it's those kickin' floor toms!
He has some other good music, but nothing that compares to this song. Those drums, the bass line, the rhythm guitar, and the heartfelt lyrics. That beautifully heavy drum intro just starts it off so well. An absolutely complete song.

Stanley Park. I was there on vacation with my family when I was 14, while this was being recorded.
What a great jam, this is just as fresh since released. Elvis Costello and the Attractions killer band. 🤘🤘❤
Brings a tear to my eyes.
These lyrics only get more powerful with age. Thank you for that.
ABSOLUTELY
Ive played this song for the last 40 years and it NEVER gets old. Thanks El
me too ✌️💞✨️
I bought this album at 12.
PEACE and LOVE will ALWAYS WIN!! I have aniridia and asd and adhd. Music is my fuel. Good vibes if you are reading!
Saw him do this live in 1982 in Manhattan on the waterfront. It was terrific. Great fun.
Saw him play this last night in Melbourne. Loved it. Still a song for our times.
Nick gave it soul, Elvis gave it swagger. Perfection.
❤️
Your song from 1978 is so salient to what's going on in the world! Thank you for the music! Better days ahead!
Saw Elvis Several times, first time was at the Academy of Music, first band was Mink DeVille then Nick Lowe with Rockpile... Elvis came out and sang Allison achapelo, awesome.
The anthem of the entire new wave era.
Written by a boomer.
It's almost like "boomer" doesn't really mean much
I forgot how much I liked this song. I was an MTV kid and this video/song always stuck with me. 53 now and this sounds as fresh as when I was ~12. Thank you Elvis.
Try to get the book "England's Dreaming"!
Video 137 MTV August
Gotta agree. I was 16 at the time now just turned 59 and I thought of it, played it and it kicks ass better than ever!
Still better than anything on the radio today!
DEFINITIVE…A CRYING ROCK N ROLL…SCREAM!!!!!!!!!
Saw him in 1978 at Rutgers in NJ right at the time of his Saturday Night Live appearance
Nick Lowe , you wrote a beautiful song here ! Elvis did it justice !
Check his recent version with the Southsea Alternative Choir
@@runrig97 I will Thanks
Pretty sure Nick produced this as well.
You wrote a hymn, here, Nick x
The Attractions were, from late 1977 to mid 1979, one of the best Rock bands of the 20th C.
Tight, powerful, and tuneful.
Few reached their power.
What an ICON .... so much talent ... I can only hope that my song by Space Boy ... hang on ... someone's at the door ......
Don't know why you're stopping at mid 79 before Get Happy and Trust. Talk about tight, powerful and tuneful.
What about Get Happy, Trust and Imperial Bedroom? His first six albums of original material are all masterpieces. Very very seldom, like very seldom does an artist come out the gate and drop such continuously amazing material. Elvis is king.
No love for Get Happy!! ?
Peace song for punks. Loved in the 70s - still love it now. Great cover by Elvis - better than the original.
LEGION SEND ME HERE!!!!!!
That was a crazy episode 5 of Season 3 😔
waiting for episode 6
Same
Wanted to sing with them, only if i knew the song before...
FACTS: Legion's covers are better than the originals.
I cried, the laugh of Leny... So sad
One of the best songs from the New Wave era IMO. Sounds as good today as it did in the late 70s.
Best song ever and should be played out across the hilltops and cities at any time of crisis. Want it to be the one they play at my funeral when they put me in the ground... :)
+lets hope that is not for a while yet
+Anna Elizabeth Wade Exactly!!!
The highest of praise Anna!
Anna Elizabeth Wade there’s so much greatness in those words
Strangely, I find this today. I wonder if my comment will add to the 666 it's at now for this video.
Bruce Thomas's bass line in this song is fuckin' amazing! Complex enough to remain potent while retaining a solid skeleton with the Pete's drums, for the band to explore. Love it!
I really appreciate the bass line too! The chord changes in this song are SO beautiful, too!
He was called "The boy most likely to" back when EC was "Looking Italian".
One of the best rhythm sections ever...
it's a faster, punker version of nick lowe's '74 powerpop original with brinsley schwartz. both brilliant, full points to lowe for coming up with it
Great tune. Still sounds as good today as it did 35 years ago.
죄송합니다. Uncle 엘비스. ㅜㅜ. 늦었습니다. 그래도 생신 축하드립니다. 사랑합니다! ❤
The bass is everything on this.
Great song. The bass carries the song. Thank you Nick Lowe.
🎶" I ask myself... Is all hope lost?" 🎶
Filmed in Vancouver, BC, in 1978, at the end of their tour.
I was thinking it had to be BC. I have stood before those totem poles myself. Around the same era.
Jericho Beach in the opening scene I think.
Stanley Park Totem Poles is a popular tourist attraction
I was there in August. BC is an amazing place.
@@GregoryFeck as a resident, it's a great place to visit 🤣
Elvis Costello's Peace, Love and Understanding, more relevant NOW than then and the guitar work is ethereal. Listen and feel better.
Man, I gotta say there’s a line in here that hit me real hard when I was a teenager 40 years ago, and it hits even harder now…
So, where are the strong?
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sorry, but this is my absolute favorite Elvis Costello rendition...
Why apologize? I wish you peace, love and understanding. Nothing funny about it.
i do believe you meant to say that this was your favourite rendition of this song, not your favorite Elvis rendition.
I'm 62 and remember this as one of the very first ever vids when MTV was launched in 1980. Was in college. All of my friends and I knew from this song that rock n' roll had changed. Nothing replaces this, ever. EVER.
This song would’ve never been made if peace, love and understanding weren’t funny but a reality.
Still one of my favourites from Elvis's early years
今こそ、この歌を世界に広めるべき
Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, Joe Jackson, XTC, Madness, gary Numan...that was all bad ass shit. :)
This song spoke to me today… thank you Elvis. ❤️
Hello Maria how are you doing hope you’re having a great time with your family may God bless you and your family
You're welcome.
These early Elvis Costello videos are inspired and delightful. Even when they are not really playing, it's a joy to watch them.
Elvis, why can’t we as a world except Peace Love And understanding.Keep rockin in the free world.Erin go Bragg. 3:23
If only the World would listen.....
Perfect song for these times
Not much Peace in these times...
Machine-Gun Bruce Thomas's bassline is the absolute driving force in this epic anthem
Stimme 100% zu jmm1000. Der Song groovt dahin das ist ein wunderschönes Stück Musik.
as was nick lowe's on the original [brinsley schwartz] and credit tom engle of kubla khan on revoluttion II 5 years before lowe
This song is a just a gem, pure rock n roll, love it, should be more of it. Bring this music back !!!!
Hello Kim
How are you doing today?
Nice meeting you here
Wow look at thst English garden! ❤ Great song!
That’s a great question, Elvis.
Such a truly brilliant song. This gem won my heart for Elvis Costello.
I needed this tonight..
+omfug I'm w/you. Had to turn off the news, and dive into music to clear my head from my spirit getting downhearted sometimes...... The world needs more peace, love and understand. Like your username, cbgb!
+Scott Schleifer honey...that is my real name...
David Lee Roth once said that the reason why rock critics love Elvis Costello so much is because most of them look like him!🤣🤣🤣
while most fake wrestlers look look dlr
@@rp7356 Because they want to look like REAL rock stars!
@@impalaman9707 exactly what buried credible metal n brought us the cartoon 80's. need any mandrax?
DLR had a sense of humor. he also write some fine music. check: Damn Good Times. Push Comes To Shove.
Still one of the greatest songs ever... i remember when it came out
Saw this live with my 63 yo Dad and my 8 yo daughter. A timeless classic, relevant to 3 generations! Thank you EC!
He was happy.
that is freakin' awesome!!!! Poets deserve to get paid!!
I'm not a musician but I assume you mean those awesome drums. That does define the song. Rolled to that back in the day.
Kevin O’Brien, indeed. Floor Toms are the Tom Tom drums on the floor at the side of a kit drummer.
Had a chance to catch them this summer. Awesome show.
He has some other good music, but nothing that compares to this song. Those drums, the bass line, the rhythm guitar, and the heartfelt lyrics. That beautifully heavy drum intro just starts it off so well. An absolutely complete song.
Fantastic story, what a great connection! And Los Straitjackets (with Nick) are supporting Elvis on his summer tour.
Wise Words , WELL DONE .
I love Elvis Crespo.
classic still makes me tear up
one of the greatest Elvis songs of all time. plus, he’s got the greatest voice, amazing performer, musician, etc.
i love so many elvis songs. but this one i always want to turn up to 11.
