I’ve met this man. He is so smart, such a gentleman and scholar. This interview is a perfect example of that.
...and now he is known!🤣
Some of the best answers I've heard. What a legend.
Facts! Damn near made it to the end before giving a normal answer
Yes. These are the best answers I’ve heard, and I’ve watched a lot of these.
All thought provoking, loved it
Probably one of the best questionnaires ever. Elvis Costello is brilliant
Agreed
Probably the most boring one.
@@peterlundstrom6054 , LOL!!!!
@@almarlurie there’s always someone,right?
@@DippyHippie haha, Always!!! :-)
I could listen to this man tell me my _own_ life story. And I already know that one.
Elvis Costello is a great artist, and now I understand why he is known to be so kind & accomodating to fans who request his autograph. It's a family tradition. #GetHappy
He signed four autographs for me when I met him in 1989.
My name is Costello. He laughed giddily when I showed him my license when I asked him for one.
@@markzappasodi Met him, too. About 17 or 18 years ago. At the Ernest Tubb Record Shop in Nashville, across from the Ryman Auditorium where he was performing several shows over two nights; we talked about Gordon Lightfoot when he found out we were from Toronto.
I love Elvis Costello. I even met him once back in the 80s and chatted for a couple minutes at the Heatwave Music Festival! :)
Absolute legend! I don’t say that often so I’m not being glib, Elvis is a musical genius.
Agreed!!! Classy guy.
There's only one Elvis and he ain't it
He really is too!!
Yes, he is!
One of the greatest poets of this or indeed any age.
Elvis has such a soothing speaking voice. I wish I could listen to him reading bedtime stories.
Get his autobiography on audio. It’s long and amazing. He reads it. Like being in heaven.
That voice, the wisdom, the gentleness he delivers his words.
His voice is so soothing
He never said whether he likes blood and chocolate. For anyone who saw him blaze with fury and frustration on his first two tours, seeing him now is a study of how we evolve. Always bright, eloquent, and insightful. Some rock legends turn into cartoons and caricatures of themselves, but he has aged gracefully.
his vocal cadence, points of reference, politeness, and sincerity make him a fascinating interview. feels like a character in a movie speaking. so much idiosyncracy and charm. always loved costello but never sat down and watched an interview with him.
he was so frenetic in his youth even offstage. kinda drove you mad to watch him. but this is a wonderful condensation of the earlier version. adore him.
What a lovely man
Elvis costello was tremendous in this . Well done
He’s like a British Jeff Goldblum.
Elvis is such a sweet talented man. Need more people like him in this world.
The Great Escape is my fave action movie!
He's a great musician -- and so is his wife, Canada's own jazz pianist/songstress, Dianna Krall. What a combo!
You've got that right! With Elvis and Diana charming you, and plenty of very cool music being created before your eyes, why would any guest want to say "Good night" and leave their home?
🇨🇦
Lucky bastard 🤭😝
Sad when 3rd Rock From The Sun ended but cheered when Elvis showed up in the final episode. Also, his wife Diana Krall is amazing!
I was expecting him to sing "But I'm no good with machinery" when asked about apps on phones.
Every time I phone you, I just want to put you down.....
OH what fabulous answers. WOW. He is such an enigma and boy has he slowed himself down to mellow. Amazing man, artist etc
Elvis always seems to be one of the sweetest guys.
Elvis Costello is a legend. Been a fan since my youth 👍🎶
When are these not good? The answer is Never. They are NEVER not good. Keep 'em coming, Stephen... and Elvis!!
It helps that they edit out dull answers.
That's why you don't hear every guest answer every question.
Daniel Craig sorta sucked to be honest. It's kind of rare but there have been a few that just come off flat.
@@OriginalPiMan I didn't think of that. How often have you been in the audience for Questionert tapings?
@@rejoyce318
Zero, but it's the only option once you think about it. Why tell guests there are 15 questions developed by the Late Show Labs, and then go on to ask only most of the questions?
God I love Elvis Costello. Genius man, I could listen to him talk all day.
I adore this segment however this is the best ever with this music legend.
Elvis Costello’s wit and wisdom and charm on full display.
Costello is so clever. I agree about chocolate and raspberries. Better apart, not together. His answer about favorite scent was great.
I loved Bruce Springsteen answer for favorite smell…..his wife!
These questionnaires are such a great segment and I think this may be the best one yet.
"Even if he might have meant it in a different way." 😏
Great response
My dad was about to leave to go shopping then he heard his voice and was next to me in a mile second
I would love to sit next to Elvis Costello at a dinner party.
No, you wouldn't, he chews with his mouth open.
Bullshit.
One of the more cheeky and entertaining answer sets we've heard in recent memory. Thank you, Mr Costello. Please give my best to your wife. 👏
Great autograph story I see why you ask that. Great interview.
What happens when we die?
Without hesitation - “we go into everything”
Best goddamn answer I’ve ever heard.
And he is correct. We came from the universe and then return back... All life for that matter.
No simple answers from Elvis, very thoughtful and explanatory. Best episode yet.
Love Elvis so much. So glad he's still making music
Boiling a tin of condensed milk makes great caramel
don't let the water evaporate. I did. once. had to clean caramel off the ceiling.
@@bradleybrown8399 lol...
@@bradleybrown8399. Yikes! 😮
The man (Elvis) is a living legend and a genius!
He has aged so well. I am a massive fan, and got to see him in concert (pre-covid). Amazing.
Seen him in concert 5 or 6 times... great songwriter & performer, best lyricist of my long lifetime. Genius.
Elvis Costello saying he can’t play piano very well. 🤣🤣
Because he is in awe with his wife's piano playing...
Elvis Costello, alias Declan Patrick MacManus.
This is one of my favourites by far. Legend.
Admittedly, Stephen's favorite artist.
My grandparents were old school English, said eat like "at" & "shed-ule"...long story short they bought condensed milk cans by the case.
My parents were old school Yankee and there was always a couple cases of canned milk in the closet along with boxes of Bisquick and cans of sardines. Just in case the "ration coupons" ran out. 🤫
elvis is one of my faves
Elvis Costello played on Letterman multiple times but he also guest hosted once. He's been on this show countless times.
😹😹😹 We’re coming for you Mr Costello 😼
In the early 2000's, he used to appear as an occasional guest on a radio show on Irish radio (The Eclectic Ballroom with John Kelly) where he would play records and talk about music...and then something wonderful happened. When the regular host went on holiday, he became a guest host. He was so cool.
His favorite smell. I never thought of that. Beautiful answer. When those certain smells hit me and I'm transported to a moment in my childhood... total bliss. Oh and after a rainfall on a warm Summer's day. 🌈 🏡♥️
When we die "we go into everything". That's what I've always thought...
Me too.
5:49 I’ve watched The Great Escape a number of times and thought about how they would’ve confiscated McQueen’s baseball and mitt lol
Sports were allowed in those POW camps, and the prisoners did play baseball, basketball, volleyball, and so on. But you are right, a prisoner being punished by time in "the box" would likely have had his mitt and ball confiscated.
As to Colbert’s remark about McQueen's leather jacket, most of those POWs were flight crew, and were issued leather jackets by the Army Air Corps because of the cold at high altitude. Those guys weren’t wearing them because leather jackets made them 'look cool'.
Elvis Costello is a musical wizard!
I was lucky to listen to Elvis Costello’s radio pirate show on UA-cam and it was wonderful throwback to the small labels
I love that guy. 😊💕
I saw Elvis Costello and The Attractions for the first time on February 14, 1979 at the Long Beach Arena in California. Have seen him many times since. Such a fine musician.
Steven's musical guest , noticed an uptick in performers. Jack white , Cheryl Crow, and Elvis C.
My favorite singer!!! 👏👏👏
I was a big fan of 2 Tone ska, and Elvis Costello was a part of that scene in Coventry.
No he wasn’t! Haha!
He's a Liverpudlian and was out before ska
@@davehoward22 Did I say anywhere he wasn't?
@@jasonloader8149 Yes, he was. A simple Google search shows he helped produce a number of artists and created a single himself for the label, Elvis Costello and the Attractions. That's how I first heard of him.
Produced The Specials album and covered a few songs
Connie-onnie butty! Aced it!
(And he a secret lemonade drinker to boot)
I saw his wife in concert in Denver at red rocks. She was lit.
A fellow MacManus...Cheers Elvis!!!
... I actually met Elvis ( totally by accident, I was going to get lunch from a temp job ) in the backstreets of soho , London ... in the early 1990s... I was completely awestruck, all I said was "thank you"... I didn't even shake his hand.
Best off the cuff full circle interview ever!
Absolutely he is a genius.
She is one of the most beautiful song ever. Thank you, Mr. Costello :)
I remember this man when he was young!
Great to listen, fantastic cadence, great artist!
I love elvis costello since I was 12..have met him..he is a perfect gentleman ❤️
The most revealing response to the questionnaire he's done.
What a beautiful person, never heard him interviewed before. Charming!
OMG, I'm getting old, Love this guy. Man crush.
What’s not to like about Mr. Costello!? Well… nothing. Mr. Costello is a delight. Best wishes 🥂 🫶🏼
👏🏼
A true outstanding gentleman. 🎩🎶
*So much joy!*
Fun show! Thank you, again!
Great interview, thanks so much
What a lovely, lovely man. Wonderful!
I've always thought that hearing only one song for the rest of my life would be torture.
Absolutely..but if so, one of my candidates would be 'Complicated Shadows'
Stephen Colbert elvis Costello great artist awesomeness job interview
Best answers ever! What a guy!
Elvis is such a class act.
I’ve loved him for years ❤
What number am I thinking of?
The number you're thinking of.
I don't know why no-one ever says that. Let's see Mr. Smarty-pants Colbert come back from that!
I love E.C. (and Eagle Brand but NOT on white bread)I was born on Vancouver Island BUT can't live there now because too many people like E.C. have discovered it.I saw E.C. in Lisbon in 1980. Fantastic!!!
easily one of the best one's from this series!!
I adore you !!! I know there's more coming.
So talented!
I’ve loved him forever, my son in law loves him as well as my daughter and yesterday my grandson wanted to hear Pump It Up again.
"Very *Happy* in my old age that we've become friends"--I see what you did there. Nice.
Cool interview.
Best answers ever
Elvis Costello is one of the greats
ok....I think Stephen is thinking number 10 !!!
hehe
Cheers°!
Elvis is so soothing
One of the greatest musical minds since Lennon/Macartney and Dylan, and spanning far more musical genres to a high pitch of perfection.
Cool as shit
Wow, what a charming person!
Ah, lovely!! ❤️✨🔥
Great observation by Stephen about how Paul Simon writes his songs, starting with the bass line. I've been listening to a lot of his music for a long time, and so many of his bass lines are really beautiful and amazing. I would love to hear a collaboration between Mr Simon and Mr Costello!
Simon finds the bass line. From someone else, then takes sole credit for it. Rips off the bass player.
@Stormbringer Coming Really interesting. I had heard of him ripping off Los Lobos on the Graceland album. Other things I heard about the production of Graceland definitely put some of the credits into question.
Elvis was right on the mark. Wolverine has got to be the most dangerous animal pound for pound. If you ever come across one, hopefully it’s not hungry……
