I am 68. Still Rock to this song. . One of the best.
Elvis is brilliant and his music will be listened to in a 100 years from now- he's transcendent
It gets the volume knob for sure
I'm 67. Saw them live touring for...Imperial Bedroom??? Tightest live band ever. The Attractions were very special.
Good on you 👍
Happy 70th birtday Mr. Costello!🎉🎉🎂🍾🍷
Elvis Presley had the hips, Elvis Costello had the . . . ankles?
Club penguin feet?
@@slshusker STOP IT THIS INSTANT🤣
Looked painful in the Pump it up video didn't it?
won't let my daughters watch this shit
He definitely had ankles. hated him then, love him now
Elvis Costello, The Jam, The Specials, Madness and the list goes on. The late seventies and early eighties was a wonderful time to be an angry young man.
And woman
You Forgot The CLASH and Sex Pistols!! Speaking of ANGRY YOUNG MEN!! GREAT POINT Harvey!!
Are you the Harvey Smith from Fern Gore?
Well said, well said indeed.
Amen to that !
One of the most infectious beats of any rock tune..evah!
When I first heard this song I thought of INXS...okgo and strokes. All great in the wake of Elvis.
It's spelled "ever".
Yeah man !!
Malcolm vs krelboynes!!!
Agree 100%
I was stuck in a salon once for 6 hours and this song was on repeat 50 times in a row. I’ll never forget that day.
Lol...
Yeah but coulda been the frog song by Wings... ...you'd have run through the glass door!
at least it was a good song, no?
Damn! You must have been pumped up about it!
@@gardenlover9663 lol you got a chuckle on that one!
It's beauty
It's grace
It's Elvis Costello twisting his ankles for 3 mins straight
I wouldn't try it.
Why the hell is he twisting his ankles? Lol
@@BeatlesFan1975 Probably as a tribute to THE Elvis. Of course, the song is about abusing another part of your anatomy.
I was a teenager when this came out. I liked it then but it wasn't until like a week ago that it hit me with just how powerful it was. Dude sticks the shit out of that bass line
ua-cam.com/video/_sUHFRbb9W8/v-deo.html
I was in my teens
Loved it as a kid of the 1980s. Loved it in the frisbee scene in ‘P.C.U.’ [1993].
A good song belongs to every era.
If I remember right this track didn't chart that well when it was released in the UK. Now it's probably classed as his best single.
@@michaelchristian5089Veronica is probably the best charting song. Not bad either. But this one is so unique... timeless really... and clever
61 years old and yeah, this is on my favourites section. I can remember when it was released and it still holds up 💪💪
I was with my ex boyfriend when he went to buy this album when it was new, I still love this kick ass song ❤
The bassline in the chorus is one of the all time greats....
Well it has been sampled by at least 2 songs since its release
Voodoo Child by Rogue Traders
Brutal by Olivia Rodrigo
Cannot be disputed 👍
Agree
Damn Straight !
Everyone's all "omg he's standing on his ankles" and I'm over here like "holy shit is the bassist playing with a broken hand?".
Holy moly, I have watched this at least 75 times and never noticed that.
Haha yeah I read they were drinking at a bar the night before and got into some mishap and hurt his hand. Used to know the story but have forgotten it over the years.
I noticed that too - crazy.
I never noticed that either. Thanks for noticing. Love the glasses.
Apparently no one here ever saw Freddie Garrity (Freddie and the Dreamers) from about 15 years before. In addition to stealing Elvis's name, Costello flat out stole Garrity's moves.
I'll never forget my mother in 1978 saying, "What's wrong with him?"
😂 ditto my dad
😂😂😂
lol
the answer someone named him elvis
LOL! You just made me spit out my beer while taking a drink.
Awesome, still love it nearly 60 now
Same as me xx
That Vox organ sound is awesome.
Damn, this is so "kick ass" even after more than forty years since its release. Why can't music of today be like this music? Elvis is a musical icon and genius.
Paul McCartney speaking very highly of him and collaborating with him says it all. I was lucky enough to see him live in the late 70s. Alison is one of the greatest songs ever and I can't think of one from Elvis that I would call second rate.
@@johnvender I didn't appreciate him at the time as a teenager listening to different music but, the guy's brilliant and you can't help but move and sing, haha. One of the legends.
It takes 20-30 years for the cream to rise to the top.
listen to 'brutal' by olivia rodrigo hahahahah
Ok, boomer
Still sounds great after 40 years! In fact sounds better.
I'd say more like 43 years later, now.
It calls a classic record
Can your comment get anymore right?? This song just kicks A$$!!!!
That bass line...
Bruce bass
This dude was so far ahead of his time
no doubt
Reminds me of OK GO, betting he influenced them a good amount
How far ahead was he?
@@xleastarx No way of knowing, we've not caught up yet
Grant Lewis All the best ARE
...and his ankles never recovered.. =)
LOL
Hahahaha 😂🤘
Just read this comment as I spy a vid on the side about Jack Wilshere. Coincidence?
ha! good one!
lol messed up but funny.
This is the best song he ever recorded.
Allison 😊
Beyond Belief
The live version is better, still
This song still packs an awesome punch. Love it!
One of my favs. Never can be still when ever time I hear it. Just makes you feel good.
Hello, how are you doing it's nice meeting you here.
There is absolutely no excess in this song. Every beat, every bump, every note and every yelp has just enough space to kick you in just the right place.
What would be called the ‘drop’ in music today sits here around 1:20, where they just hit a note, let it ring undisturbed, and then…………………..
HEY!
Brilliant.
When Elvis hot the scene I thought he was the MOST uncool guy in rock with that old organ sound. Now I love it. i now think the uncoolness is a feature. An ultimate act of rebellion to reject what other people think of as cool. More punk than punk.
Yep! I 👍 agree.. My favorite uncle adored him
One of those songs that if it comes on the radio when you are driving you are doing 30 when it starts and 80 by the time it ends
LAWLESS FOLKS ARE PROUD OF ZERO ETHICS! YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Having had several ankle sprains in my life, watching Elvis's feet in this makes me grit my teeth -- what a great song
I noticed the same thing. Lol
Holy double-jointed ankles, Batman!
I can imagine 😅
I'm 😔😐 slightly pigeon 🐦 toed.. hahahaha!!
I was just about to comment about his funky ankles. I was reminded of how great this song was when it was played in the background of an AFV montage.
I love these types of songs that are straight up about having a good time and the stomping music and lyrics delivery encapsulate the spirit of it. Absolutely wonderful.
He's actually making fun of people with that attitude. ;-)
Top 10 bass line of all time?
You are wrong. Sorry know better
I'd definitely put it in the top 20. It's hella fun to play.
Certainly more going on than first appears
Legend has it if you're a bass player and you are a good person, when you die, you join this band and play every bass line of Costello & the Attractions work up through at least (and especially) "Get Happy"...for eternity.
@@JohnWilliamsFromBluff Top 5
I saw Elvis Costello in Edmonton Alberta in the fall of 1978. Backed up by The Battered Wives.
Manager: Break A Leg Out There!
Costello: SAY NO MORE!
Pure, simple, great rock and roll. What else is there to say?
It's actually a biting and ascerbic look at the the excesses of s3x and drugs of the rock and roll era and how he saw some of that continuing even in what was supposed to be a "new wave." He's making fun of all that in a satirical and ironic way. So, it's a little bit more than simple. ;-)
Another classic
thanks Elvis for defending Olivia and not being brutal and sour about it. 😊
i see what you did there
Its not even Olivia's fault. She only writes and sings her songs. It's all her producer fault. He should be fired asap 🐩
@les rete invest in hearing aids
@les fede the riff is identical
Thanks Olivia, I knew I got deja vu listening to this song. It’s more of an homage. Olivia is not being a traitor to Mr. Costello.
Everytime I hear this song I get ALL PUMPED UP. Another good, classic hit which I enjoy listening to. This song is full of energy.
I love the way he dances with his feet 😊. Classic song!
Are we supposed to dance with our hands then?
Very underrated genius
Mike Hughes Underrated by whom? All musicians and most people I know love him. His songwriting is incredible and so is his singing.
@@BeatlesCentricUniverse By the public as a whole. C'mon stop being pedantic, I like him so do you, but he never has got the recognition he deserved
@@MJ.71 Yeah, you're probably right. I think a lot of people don't know who he is, or even understand his greatness as a songwriter and singer.
@@BeatlesCentricUniverse Totally Agree. I wonder how many people will come here now it's being used in a tv advert? (UK)..... Hmmmmm
FFS he's not underrated, you people have got to stop calling everyone 'underrated'. Just because your generation don't know him doesn't mean no one else does.
Awesome song 🇬🇧 From a time when great songs came along thick & fast❤
Best bass line I have heard
So guys a great beat and I love his buddy Holly glasses.
I find it funny that alot of people are getting mad at Olivia Rodrigo for using a similar guitar riff on Pump It Up for Brutal even though Elvis Costello himself had no issues with her using that riff and explained it's just part of making rock music. God bless Elvis Costello. Also, Olivia doesn't make the beats of the song. She just writes the lyrics and sing it and a producer makes the beats for her.
A great track from my youth that I still love to blast out when I'm driving in the car by myself. Fantastic.
I was a teenager when this came out. I loved it then, and I still love it. ❤
So do i its awesome.👍😍😍
Still puts a shiver in my neck and shoulders when I hear it, near 40 years later.
He's the spitting image of his father. Go Elvis!!! Philadelphia USA
This still bangs after so many years. Telltale signs of a true classic.
Seems like modern artists like it enough to rip it off
ua-cam.com/video/_sUHFRbb9W8/v-deo.html
Will never age, well not in my lifetime :)
This song is pure genius!
Perfect example of being far better than what's required.
The great declan a truly brilliant lyricist, very infectious.
The album this year's model was phenomenal !
This is one of my favorite albums and the bass playing is just awesome!
Agreed.....
One of the greatest singles ever released. An amphetamine hurricane of a song.
Thanks Olivia Rodrigo for leading me to this song!
I thought she sampled this song! So did 'Rogue Traders - Voodoo Child'
Doctor who to rogue traders to elvis costello
He’s got the moves nailed on this. Great tune!
the first time i heard this song was in an episode from malcolm in the middle 💜 Haha so funny
I agree...X :)
i knew it was from that show!!!! but which episode?
season 3 episode 2 "emancipation" :)
gangnum style LOL the song is not," From, that show"..
you mean it was played in that show..
My first concert ever, Houston, 1978, Elvis, Nick Lowe, and Mink de Ville. Elvis’s set was pure fury.
Elvis Costello= KING OF COOL!!!!!! LONG LIVE THE 80'S MAN!!!!!!!
Isn't this a 70s song?
Wow - pure rock and roll! Please come back to us!! At least there are clips like this. What is the deal with the bassist's right hand? Is that a bandage or a cast? Nothing stops a real rocker from Rock'n!!!
One of the most underrated performers/writers ever. He should be a national treasure.love uncle elvis.
Malcolm in the Middle: Season 3, Episode 2. At first, I thought this song was released right around the time this episode came out. Boy, was I wrong.
Yes!
Also in the movie "PCU". Got Jeremy Piven, David Spade, John Favero (
3 minutes of musical PERFECTION
Wow!!! This reminds me of why I have always dug Elvis Costello's dynamic style!!! Rock on forever, EC!!!
I never knew this was Costello until days ago. I always thought it by some no-name 90’s indie band. Still sounds fresh in 2023.
Mudhoney
The beat is deadly 🎉
This is why Elvis is King~!
This reminds me of brutal it was scratching my head for ages
Or the other way around
@@angelocarz6964 yeah sorry my mistake
I literally was listening to this song and was like Olivia definitely sampled this song
@@hallhilla9341 I don’t think she sampled it but they definitely do sound alike the start mainly but it does changed dramatically between the both of them
@@scarygarey3271 im pretty sure Olivia and rouge traders both sampled this song
I certainly know this song well but I don't think I ever saw this video. Good Lord, what a ton of youthful energy from Elvis and the Attractions. Great stuff.
Love that freaking organ driven beat! NERD ROCK 🖖🤟
I'm 8 years old again. 😍
And I'm 21 again.
Uncle Daniel was a big fan of Elvis Costello. uncle passed away. Daniel left me with a legacy of Rock music. Rest in peace MON...
Never get tired of this tune!!!
It's like if Buddy Holly had a love child with a 70's nerd. Good stuff. :D
Not a love child but ...a voodoo child.
@@philcallahan583 Good one
My thoughts exactly. The glasses. Hair. Skin tone. He’s buddy reincarnated. Buddy was a nerd too
Back in the 70s music was Bat shit crazy rock and roll. I miss it. You don't hear MUSIC like this.
its gone, sadly
One of his best singles sheer class, if your feet doesn't move to this you are deceased.
Totally gets the blood pumping, I just have to get up and start rocking out. And it puts a huge grin on my face. Every time.
How could you possibly not like this..Elvis costello..classic
Because the guy was an absolute tool when he came to New Zealand.
Elvis pumps up my energy level every time.
All i have to say is i like this song one of my favourites from this band this song it's got rhythm for white brother's
Good music 🎶 🎵 👌
I totally forgot about this brilliant tune until i heard it on Greatest hits radio this week now its stuck in my head, I was never really a fan when i was a kid but i'm a changed man now haha, great tune.
Totally agree, didn't like this in my youth but tastes change. Also love Good Year For The Roses version.
Ditto mate
Bruce’s baselines on all of the Attractions’records were always melodic and so so good.
A great song from my high school days!!! Now, this is my workout song or my feel-good song when I'm get bored....Great song by a great artist!!!😀
I remember when Elvis Costello and the Attractions played at the student union at Rutgers in New Brunswick NJ. ....tried to get in for free claiming I was some punk rock star . It was a good time.
Both Letterman and Colbert said in interviews that he was their favorite guest. Cool guy , intelligent , and really funny - and didnt mind coming in at the last minute to fill in for a guest that didnt show up. And did I mention he is an awesome musician. They dont make those anymore.
There’s plenty of amazing musicians around! If you’re looking for newer rock bands, check out Shame and Squid for some more classic post-punk stuff, Black Midi’s new album is like a fusion of King Crimson and Zappa, and Black Country, New Road’s album is amazing too
I remember seeing the commercial for this album in 7th grade cracking up saying WTF is this , man he was another animal completely refreshing
Always a firm party favourite back in my day and still a bloody good song now.
59 people couldn't pump it up when they didn't really need it.
They wouldn't know 'rock' if one fell on their heads!
But the 60th person could!
Jotagy Kiggy now 283 people couldn't pump it up when they really didn't need it
Thomas Browning 298, what pen1s heads!
That's about the only time I can...
The music from my childhood is amazing. Squeeze is on deck.
That bassline is legendary
Masterpiece!
Oh yeah! Jamming this tune in my 1975 Ford Pinto one speaker system back in the late 70s. Sure miss those simple time of fun and play.
One kick ass song.he needs to do more songs like this
Pump it up until you can feel it …pump it up when you don’t really need it don’t really need it
Can't make a comment that will do this *TUNE* justice! May it live forever. xxxx
LOVE these guys..he could write a song and a half..brilliant
love his moves.......listening to this i am 17 again
A forefather of the New Wave genre
if you like this you might like my brothers music. his name is Stu Morris
Never get tired of the rhythm, My generation of New Wave was the greatest time in my life..
It’s the full package on display here; the audacity to call himself Elvis, the uncool glasses, weird mannerism, goofy attire...combined with incredible lyrics and music that simply put him head and shoulders above anything at the time.
God, it’s brutal out here.
It’s the same thing lol
Especially for This Year's Model!
The brilliance of the man 🙌🏻
Pump it up baby! Love it, never gets old ✔️😁👍
I haven't heard this in years! Great song!
I know now that band in 1988 used this for the inspiration for their "Wild, Wild, West" hit song.
