This song is damn masterpiece
Can you tell me why? What's it all about? I'd be interested.
@@jaykaybee68 Colonialism, war, sending working class people to die for the military industrial complex. Elvis Costello is a genius. "Oliver" refers to Oliver Cromwell who was a pillager and villain who used (working class?) poor people in his military conquests and is very much hated by many, especially in Ireland. The song is actually a good study guide if you wanted to learn about colonialism, imperialism, war and so on as the lyrics are still relevant today and will be for as long as the world is run by greedy psychopaths who engineer constant wars - not to win, but to profit. War is big business. Hope this was useful to you.

I was 14 in 1979 and remember going in to town to buy this record with my best mate Steve.
Its still up there as one of my favorite songs along with Accidents will happen.
And 40 years later me Steve and Elvis are still best mates.
I was born in August 65. This song had a lot of go in it. I was always so hyper and this got it out of my system whenever I would listen to it
Real mates are for life :)
I got him to sign the accidents will happen (inside out sleeve) whilst he produced the specials first lp lucky me my mum had a second job above TW studios Fulham in the launderette top geezer and the specials where lovely I was 13

... This is genuinely good fr 💀💀🔥🔥🔥
Daring, bold, and absolutely brilliant lyrics by a true master of mischief.
Mr.Costello is,as it goes without saying,is a virtually sensational sound to each and everyone's ears. His music composition and performing gifts are precisely among the very best not just today but just as much yesterday for all Music History.

Kelli Taylor, I’m so glad to be 53 and able to see all these bands The were part of a shift in music. Enjoy all this music from the 80’s, Duck.

This song is just pure brilliance
I just love the key changes along with the driving beat. Yeah, the words are something else, but I love it for its MUSIC !!!
Which Elvis is better:
Like:Costello
Reply:Presley
Theres only one elvis and its not presley
Costello all day long but I don't mind a bit of Presley now and then
@stevie mac -Yeah but Musically EC has it all over The King.
Not really comparing like with like. Both were/are massively culturally important. Preserve them both for future generations.
i mean elvis presley is iconic and had an amazing voice but he didnt write songs and this guy is the most powerful guy of all time for being able to say the n word
Wifes cousin played pool with him at top pub Bampton, he used to stay in nearby village to write songs.
Who else hears Elvis in their head sing, "I am staring to function..." as soon as this song is over?
If you do, you remember listening to albums.
I come back to listen to this once every couple of years, and I reckon it gets better every time. I don't suppose 'Pointless' is ever going to do an 'Any word of four letters or more from Oliver's Army' question though.
Pure Gold.
I have to be honest this is the only one of his songs I like, but I totally love it, total banger :)

This was never censored, not even on totp, nobody noticed.
if you see racism in these lyrics you're missing the point.

Hey you might like a band called The Doublejumps if you like Elvis Costello
The Archangel like man I loved
I fell So in love with
He looked into my eyes
Maybe he was holding both of my hands in his. He said,
"I'm sorry for our troubles, but I Celebrate our triumphs"
Then he said it again I think a little differently.
It now occurs to me: that he won't be that man again until he falls in love with someone else.
Someone else will be able to access, give and receive such sensitive and dazzling love--with the man I love, though he'll be lost to me
I don't understand
He's gone

LOL the NHS specs.. love it! So Politically incorrect but innocent.. this man is a talent.. and those pipes.
Didja catch that Ronettes' finish?

A good friend of mine didn't like the way Elvis looked He said he reminded him of a man who used to be a flasher I think he s ok myself
When I was a kid I thought he was saying 'Oliver Zombie'. Lol.
Can hardly believe this song is 41 years old. Where has the time gone? Loved it then, love it today.

It's white-n bomb, what the British army called the local Irish nationalists during the troubles.
@@waynemurphy6708 I BET REFERENCES TO OLIVER CROMWELL, WENT DOWN WELL IN IRELAND.
It's meant to be subversive the song is a critique of the British Empire and racism or the idea that the British were better than everyone else. He used the word because it was a slur British people used during the Troubles. No blacks, no dogs, no irish was a common sign back in those days. You have to understand the context in how he used it. That being said he himself has urged people to stop listening to it and said he regrets it. So this is a weird disconnect between an artists and their fans.

Met him twice on the street in London. We had a nice chat. He even remembered me the second time. Sound guy. Amazing talent.
I saw him live in London, he came down from the stage and passed playing the guitar just next to me, I didnt know what to do when he came just a feet or two next to me so I just touched him and said someting stupid I guess?

This is one of my favorite songs ever written. It’s has so many political undertones while still maintaining a bubblegum jingle to it. It’s a catchy tune, that actually has something to say. Bravo Elvis Costello, you’re my inspiration as a writer.

A song about sending young working-class men off to die in foreign wars, that sounds like Abba. Brilliant.
Good call. He meant it to sound like an ABBA song

Can’t believe Elvis has disowned his own song! Apart from being a brilliant song it was honest, poetic and loved by my generation. I had just finished a tour of duty in Ulster when it was released and could relate exactly to what he was saying about working class lads always being recruited to sort out someone else’s mess. I accept some of the lyrics would be viewed as not PC today, but I hope the trend of pulling down statues is not going to transfer to works of art, literature and poetry. I would urge Elvis to think again and remember he was only reflecting values that were held widely in the seventies and he has nothing to be ashamed of.
Agreed wholeheartedly. The ignorant, such as those who wish to cancel this extraordinary, well -informed, angry, masterpiece (seemingly in utter ignorance of the song's message) can't be appeased, and it is pointless trying.
Exactly, people cancelling a song that speaks facts, and If you aren’t angry at this song or offended and you see the light hearted side and can acknowledge a piece of total art why can’t we all. Some people are just dumb. They don’t watch the vid or read all the lyrics just isolate the N-Word and call Elvis Costello a racist, which he’s not. The only crime Elvis committed in my eyes was being a genius and writing one of the great songs of the 70’s nothing wrong with that
Appeasement only breeds WEAK NESS
Exactly. In fact black gang members et al actually refer to each other as “niger” to this day and get away with it!
Elvis in this snowflake, hashtag# me too millennials. He doesn't need the headache.
It’s a song about colonialism and includes a racist slur that was/is used against Irish people. If you erase that slur you impede our understanding of racism, and thereby degrade our ability to fight racism. You sanitise the ugly parts of history, you repeat the ugly parts of history.
Well put sir.

Back when pop songs had clever lyrics...
Probably never have clever lyrics again a golden era and time magic
When they were literate.
Pop songs can have clever lyrics nowadays, but the format and use of these ideas is... different, to say the least.
Back when artists could actually write intelligent, coherent lyrics. Most people have no idea of the meaning behind Oliver's Army.
This song isn't representative of pop songs of that era. Most pop songs in every era don't have particularly clever lyrics. A lot of pop songs from every era are terrible, too. We just generally like more of them from the era in which we were young because we liked them at the time and they remind us of good times from our past. Also, we tend to not bother remembering the songs we don't like.
All that said, I do think there's a difference between music in the past and music today, in that there were more grown adult music artists in the past who brought more complex experiences to especially grown adults in the audience. Today, I would bet that a smaller percentage of people are trying to make it in the music business at 30+ years old. The cost of living is higher, and record companies are looking to sign much younger people.
When my dad was in secondary school, him and his friends would put on chemistry goggles and sing this song’s chorus, as they all decided said goggles made them look like Elvis Costello.
Must have been very funny good on them theres only one Elvis and its not presley ❤️
A truly Great Song by one of the Finest Song writers ever . I often thought of this song when in Army 🪖 Vehicles in the 1980 s never knowing what might or might not happen .
Sad that so many on both sides of the culture wars get hung up on that one word when the message of the song’s lyrics remains timely and relevant decades removed from the political climate it was written in.
DIDYA KNOW--THAT WORD, CAME FROM ILLITERATE BRITISH SAILORS (who couln't even spell their own names ) IT COMES FROM THE AFRICAN COUNTRY, N I G E R I A, WHICH COMES FROM , THE RIVER N-I-G-E-R, BRITISH SAILORS PRONOUNCED IT AS---THE RIVER --N-I-G-G-E-R. WITH A HARD G, ALL VERY INNOCENT, WHEN THE INFO REACHED AMERICA, THEY COPPIED THE BRITISH PRONOUNCIATION, BUT TURNED IT INTO A DETRIMENTAL INSULT. END -OF.
The boys from the Mersey and the Thames & the Tyne!
Dear Mr Costello. Please don't tamper with the song. It's historically pitch perfect. Taboo will only masquerade the truth and facts that you so eloquently put in prose. People need to know how it was.
Agreed. We cant forget that is truly how catholics were treated and referred to. Everyday they try to erase more history and replace it with their own.
Agree completely
i love that he corrects it live but doesn't change all of the satirical racist language...
@@fuckkko it ain't racist,it satirical,if you hadn't grasped it ,Elvis ain't racist neither was Don rickles, they're pointing out bigoted attitudes not promoting them.
I look at it as the word needs to be taboo and it's just uncomfortable for a lot of listeners and that's totally respectable. By changing the song a little bit he wants to make the same point without being as aggressive as it is now. I don't see what's the big issue. If he were to do that the original would still be up and the newer version would be better for a new audience. It's a win win in my book.

There is nothing wrong with using a 'racist' term in the correct context. Plus it is as catchy as Abba.
The 'racist ' term hear refers to Irish Catholics like Costello's dad and myself in the context of the song. How can it be 43 years since I bought this utterly timeless classic? Word-perfect, poptastic-tunesmithery with enough righteous sass, pop-sheen and melody to ensure it will still sound fresh and relevant in another 43 years. I love Elvis Costello & "Oliver's Army"... I hope this video doesn't get pulled from YT. In my "Brick" in Northern Ireland we had soldiers from every country in the UK (including NI) and I was proud that we ensured that nobody died in Armagh during our 3 month tour there in early 1978.
Hi James - Well done - good man - Brilliant song and summed up what many of us did - I couldn't find a job, so took the 'Queen;s shilling. Did two tours - Andersonstown and out of the Docks, near Palace Barracks. Had a great time - strange thing to say I suppose. All the best.
Olive's army remains are relevant now as it was when written. The armed forces are dependent on recruiting kids from poor areas where there are precious few other options.
@@upthegills27 I guess everyone has a price but no politician is telling me who to shoot or bomb.
@jayhuegan Jesus never fails us come to know Jesus as your Lord and Savior today amen For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son john 3:16-18 come to know Jesus today He died on the cross for our sins and rose again, so we can live with Him forever because He loves us, by His blood He has victory over sin, death and hell amen. God Jesus The Holy Spirit love you amen God bless amen :)
@jayhuegan Mainly from Scotland in fact.
Always loved your music, and your acting on 2 1/2 men thank you ❤
The use of the n word here is no different to Stevie Wonder in Living for the City where you hear a police officer using it as a racial slur in the background. White "n word" was what racists called the Irish. Elvis Costello is on the side of the Irish in the song. This shouldn't need explaining. Unfortunately we live in an age where the clueless, yet emotional, bed wetters complaining on social media can get a few retweets and convince an artist to cancel his own song, not because he thinks he's done anything wrong, but because it's simply not worth wasting time fighting against emotional over nothing fools on social media. In 10 years time hopefully the adults will return and we won't be run by people with the mentality of children on social media.
Time to start to hide uncensored music films game - books
