Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom - Comprehensively Forgettable

- Aquaman 2 is the kind of solidly forgettable superhero movie that would have done well if it had come out 10 years ago. Unfortunately it didn't.

At this point, I’m more interested in the reviews of these movies than the actual films
holywood at its finest
Same bro. I haven't watched a superhero film since like, 2021, and that was No Way Home. They've all been getting bad reviews so I was like, "Why even bother anymore?"
Edit: forgot about Across the Spider-Verse and GotG3
100
where have you been for the past...5 years?
Exactly, don’t want to waste time especially since going to the theater takes an effort with little ones
Drinker reviews are the closest I will get to watching a superhero movie these days
I grew up in 80s desparate for comic book hero movies. I collected those books and loved em. Today I can’t stand what Hollywood has done to them. Even tho Aquaman isn’t female girl boss panderverse no 413 in a row…my love of the genre has been burned out of me till I have a seething loathing of Disney. That bleeds over to anything like it. Now I watch YT for my entertainment.
Yea. They're just putting money in his pockets and out of theirs by making these.
That's for damn sure. And he makes more money than them.
@@ZXSPEXyou all loved it and lapped it up though and are part of the reason they're all shit now in the first place.
You ate it up like candy flavored dog shit. You reap what you sow. Grow up and stop watching superhero movies.
Well, besides them trying to shove garbage movies down our throats, prices to go there lately are astronomical! So, you want to make sure if you're going to go to a movie, it better be a good one! Otherwise, it's not worth the money.
Honestly; the ending with how Aquaman introduces Alantis to the world is very thoughtful and feels like a true nation attempting to make peace, unlike a certain other country from marvel that acts like a obnoxious ass
"WAKANDA FOR ONLY US!"
Bullshit is what it is
Aqua man knows the world would treat Atlantis like crap which is why he still keeps them friendly but separate
It looked like they cópied black panther 1 ending
Except that T’Challa actually opened Wakanda to the world…until his family murdered him and closed it again.
Apart from all the high tech skyscrapers Wakanda still looking like a third world country..

Exactly the same! 😂👍
Because it's super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Literally did the same 😂😂
For years now. After TLOU2 fiasco, I started boycotting nearly everything. Rule of thumb is to also wait a few years to watch how rapidly everyone grifts back to hating it. True measure of failure right there.
@@brothergrimaldus3836Brilliant 👌.
I’ve seen more minutes of Drinker reviews than minutes of superhero movies this year. And I’m very happy with that choice.
Congrats on choosing the entertaining option of the two.
Nah it’ll be fine
And Drinker doesn’t cost you $100 to watch.
Same here. By far, actually. After Endgame I was done for good.
I watched the Marvels while taking a bath… and I almost destroyed my IPad because I fell asleep.
Watching the reviews instead is much saver.
Thank you for pointing out how usually movies and shows depict fathers as inept deadbeats that are more of an extra child for the mother to deal with rather than a parent. The older I get the more I notice it. The Santa Clause, Mrs Doubtfire, etc are all ruined for me after learning about what happens in family court.
I find it hard to watch Simpsons and Family Guy since this was made known to me. Al Bundy is still a hero, though.
@@emdo.unlimited555 That is why FOX needed Bob's Burgers and The Great North, to have newer shows where the father acts his age. The Great North goes the extra mile by showing that the mother was an irresponsible deadbeat who broke up with the father.
Mrs Doubtfire is pretty explicit about what happens in Family Court.
@@emdo.unlimited555 weirdly enough The Simpsons took on a producer way back in the day who said he'd never watched an episode of The Simpsons and he was behind the change in homer. In the very early days of the Simpsons, Homer did provide guidance and wisdom to some degree before becoming a funny oaf. There's a youtube video on it called like "The Death of Homer"
In short I'm wondering how orchestrated it is. Cause its not just by chance. It's clearly a running theme with producers in TV and film
@@velvetinedrapes4359 Yeah, Homer was a drunk and all but he was otherwise the classic provider who loved and cared for his family. The early seasons really showed this off but it goes downhill in the later ones where he's just an idiot.

no diversification killed the superhero genre. Cookie cutter blue beetle copied black panther, Aquaman copied black panther, the marvels copied guardians. Captain marvel copied force awakens. Josstice league copied Batman and Robin. Shazam 2 copied josstice league. Ms marvel, secret invasion and falcon and winter soldier copied cw, which copied Buffy, the vampire slayer, which copied Adam West batman. What kinda of results did Disney and WB expect?
@@riffgroove Hopefully they'll get a sequel and can improve on it, because D&D:HAT has potential to be something more. Although looking at the current state of Hollywood and WotC/Hasbro (the rights holders) I really doubt it.
Honestly, the fact that at this point in time a super hero character in a movie is having a son and not a daughter is a miracle in itself.
The biggest surprise to me was that they didn't make any of the supporting characters gay or introduce new characters that are in the alphabet squad.
Originally they were going to off the baby, so they weren't expecting the son to survive. I'm sure they would have made the son trans if there had been a third movie.
@@ezcompane They've been toning that down in recent movies, due to the financial failures caused by said pandering. Problem is, they're just toning that down and doing nothing else. They're still afraid to offend anyone, so their products are bland, stripped of creativity. They not only need to stop pandering to the Twitter pink-hairs, they need to stop being afraid of offending them too. They'll always be offended anyhow, so they may as well go for broke and bring back the 90's unselfconscious fun, à la Pet Detective Crying Game scene.
@@ezcompane they just realized it is too much trouble to censor such "characters" for the Chinese release
Wait until the kid grows up trans. Aquatrans.
Only the fact that they depict fathers in a good light is kind of bold in this day and age... So kudos for that, at least. Instead of doing damage control around Amber Heard, they should have replaced her with a decent actress (if they still exist).
So, Emily blunt? Honestly, probably wouldn’t have been a bad pick
I'm a teacher. When the last movie came out - all the kids were obsessed with Aquaman/Ironman//Spiderman . Now it seems a few kids still go on about Spiderman. But they mostly not interested in movies full stop now. Disney blew it. They also blew it with Star Wars. Happy New Year Drinker. I hope next year is a better one for original movies.
Superheroes are now a has been. They peaked in the 2010s.
This Shit is just not cool anymore thanks to Disney. Following stuff that isnt cool in like grade 7 is a death sentence for you're reputation. Kids know.
Disney definitely blew it. They had everything going for them
The market is so over saturated with this stuff it's impossible to keep up.
This will bite them in the rear end in the long run. You try to win over the _next generation_ of children, not the _current_ generation of manchildren.
I mean, do kids even know who Donald and Mickey are anymore? They've essentially been relegated to merch, if at all.
I appreciate your evenhanded approach to reviewing this film. It would be easy to destroy it in the spirit of superhero fatigue, but you still view it objectively. This, to me, is a mature show of restraint and objectivity that increases my respect for you as a critic. Thank you for your integrity.
That is one good thing about the drinker, he does not get political and tries to stay with the general facts of the movie.

@@polarvortex6601well, to even have a Father figure that's not shown as a bad Role Model is still a lot more than what we can say we could have expected, even though it's very little.

@@josephsalmonte4995 Guardians 3 was a good movie tho. Something Aquaman 2 has no claim to.
eh, Aquaman 2 was entertaining, if for no other reason than Jason Momoa, i agree with Drinkers statement in the podcast that it's "a relatively inoffensive superhero movie" it's no citizen cane, hell it's probably even barely a C tier movie, but ya know, i was enjoying it and didn't feel like i had "THE MESSAGE" shoved down my throat the whole damn time, plus my boi Black Manta@@chasehedges6775

I think the reason why the environmentalism doesn't stick out quite as much as a 'hot' topic (heh), is because it actually makes some sort of sense in the context of the movie. If I have an army frozen in ice, it's a perfectly logical move to thaw them out. If my main enemy is an underwater nation dependent on food and resources that rely on a unique underwater biome, then raising the temperature of the water to fuck up that biome and starve my enemy is also a perfectly logical move.
Rare Black Manta W
Or maybe it's because environmentalism relies on lies, outdated models, omitted data, and ultimately a perversion of science itself.
pretty much. The metaphor was too much on the nose, but contrary to almost ever other film or show that use allegories for its plot, this one made sense in its setting.
Yes, the plot made sense, but it was still a commercial for highly toxic and inneffective solar panels and win turbines. While Godzilla is a subtle attack on nuclear power stations.
Yeah, on TVTropes they call that a Space Whale Aesop. It kind of falls flat as a message to stop global warming if the reason they have to do it in the story is some fantasy nonsense about an evil frozen army that doesn't exist in the real world. Of course in this case it's fine that it falls flat because everybody's tired of being randomly harangued about it in media for the last 30 years.
Male characters? I'm in.
How many more mediocre superhero movies have to be churned out until the executives realize it's not working?
Probably like at least 4 more Wonderwomans....LMFAO😂
As soon as they start losing significant amounts of money.
I guess we have to understand Hollywood used to do this with westerns.
Those had the same exact plot in almost every movie. Good guy rides into town, meets threatened townsfolk and hot schoolmarm and then saves the day. The action movies had the hero give up his killer profession, gets his wife killed and then goes after the bad guys. They modernized that one when they killed his dog.
The difference is today people found other things to do rather than sit in a crowded theater with rude people and high prices. They can wait a couple of months and see it in their own "theater" with a big screen.
CGI also killed off the excitement. Now we know the actors aren't willing to ride that horse or drive that car and they are in the comfortable, pampered studio with a phony background. They don't even have to go to an exotic locale any more.
And we also know the actors are pampered asses from their mindboggling idiocy from their interviews. They aren't the smartest people on the planet.
Well these cooperations are huge bureaucracies. It take a couple years for a movie to go from idea to release. So we’re getting ideas from 2-3 years back.
Until people stop paying to watch them
The moment that James Gunn announced the reboot of DC killed several movies that may have done better than they otherwise did. Probably should have held off on that announcement James. Not to mention the fact that they have Amber Heard, one of the most disliked people of Hollywood. Even a top-notch script would have struggled to perform under these circumstances, let alone a okayish one.
Naw these movies are bad
Didn't know reboots were the reason for flops. Ig The MCU is rebooting after the Marvels
The dceu was damaged way before James Gunn said they were rebooting.

This year was the first Christmas where I was away from my family (military), and I decided to see Aquaman 2 since I didn’t have much else to do on Christmas day. I had heard nothing but bad things and was expecting a complete dumpster fire walking in. Surprisingly, it was a full theater for this showing, and I had a very fun time engaging in the movie’s moments with the rest of the auditorium. If nothing else, I’ll remember this one for that experience, and the fact that it saved me from a complete let-down of a Christmas.
Pulled many duties over Christmas myself during my military days, so I feel ya on that one. Thanks for doing what you do, brother. We are with you. ❤️🎄👊🏽🇺🇸

It's not a monster movie. It's a war movie. And it's probably one of my three favorite movies of 2023.
Top Gun: Maverick and RRR are probably my other two picks for 2023.
Everything else was garbage. :)
Why didn't you watch Wonka ?
I found it surprisingly fun. James Wan knows how to embrace all of the ridiculousness with style and I like how he always manages to sneak in elements of horror. It was much more entertaining than I expected.
It is sad, they really needed a hit at DC. It is odd that Orm LOOKS like Aquaman a lot more than, well, Aquaman does in his own movie
Jason Momoa looks like a never version of Aquaman from the nineties, but he wears the costume that looks like the old yellow and green one.Overall its simple but good superhero movie but it should be realised back in 2022with budget over 200 milion dollars it made 339 milions....its one of the most expwensive movies ever.
@@tomislavtakac873 That was the excuse they gave. That Mamoa was inspired by the 90s Aquaman. But even then, he really doesn't fit it. I think they just picked Mamoa because he was popular. Jason Mamoa looks better as Aquaman ... Original Aquaman is a joke
I went with the kids. It was generic but fun. No real complaints. No need to ever watch it again but you can see Jason got to a point where he wasn’t taking the character that seriously and I think it made it more fun.
In the comics, Aquaman's infant son is kidnapped, and Aquaman loses a hand failing to save him. I had doubts that WB would have a movie where a baby is murdered, but honestly hoped they would go that far because it would be so completely different from everything else... especially because DC wanted to be the "darker, mature, and more serious" movie series. Actually put these characters into pain and loss and show us how they manage it.
animated series did that story justice
Maybe take part of that story line, but make Mera going batshit crazy (they can use whatever reason they want magic, pollution, jealousy, she always was but its only getting worse), and the brothers teaming up to save the baby and the world, and amber getting beat at the end. People might have gone to see that, just to see her get her comeuppance. lol
I don't know. If DC did that, then the haters would say "of course they killed the kid because it's a boy".
Considering James Wan's portfolio, he'll probably do this story justice
Yeah, I don't want to see a baby be murdered. That's not what I find enjoyable, artistic, or relaxing.
I’m excited for your review of Mean Girls when it comes out. It’s basically a remake but the only differences as said by the show runner is it’s changed for “modern audiences” and “focus on diversity.” When they actually admit the only difference is The Message then you know it’s going to flip hard. How does these get green lit?
"So you have a Movie for me?"
"Yes I do"
Thats how theyre greenlit
They see a fanbase and think "free money".That is why Hollywood loves adapting books,tv shows, games and doing remakes/reboots.
@@naamadossantossilva4736 yup. which is what makes it so obvious that they hate their customers, it's nothing but a cynical milking of a fan base in order to expand the occupied territory of "the message" into every facet of entertainment to make it appear as if "wokeness" was in everything all along, totally normal and accepted by the masses and not the obvious "1984 style" rewriting of history that it is.
@@naamadossantossilva4736Adapting is the wrong word, they losely interpret it at best.

The situation with Amber Heard probably worked to this film's advantage. If it hadn't happened, then this would probably have been yet another film in which the "strong woman" became the main character and took out the antagonist (and probably became the president, I mean ruler, of Atlantis, etc. etc.). But with the external controversy resulting in a diminished part for Mera, for once the male characters were centre stage. And that in itself is refreshing. The fatherhood theme probably also got pushed to the forefront for this reason.

The film shits the bed.
You might be right

Didn’t exactly help draw in the audience tho.
It never fails to amaze me how DC comics: with all the oldest and most iconic comic book heroes - managed to totally miss out on 15 years of the super-hero movie boom. The biggest phenomenon in Hollywood history.
Marvel succeeded with things like Guardians and DC couldn't with Batman and Superman? Baffling stuff.

I do appreciate their attempt at giving Orm a redemption arc, even if the execution of it was a bit weak.
i watched this because of patrick wilson's king orm he was my favorite in the first film and I'm just glad he's the second lead in this.... I actually love the concept of family, fatherhood and brotherhood in this film
I've been trying to find more movies centered on brothers and fathers (that's less about being a crappy family) and it's surprisingly sparse, I think I'll check out the movie just for this!
I went into it with no expectations and thought it would just be alright but despite mediocre marketing it was surprisingly really good it wasn't as good as the first one in my opinion but a nonetheless good sequel. The dynamic and chemistry between Orm and Arthur was fun and hope it's explored more in the 3rd film and it was so good to see The Black Manta(Aka David Hyde(Kane in the movie) get treated as a huge threat similar in the comics the only problem was the ending was a bit rushed.
Honestly Black manta carried this heavy movie. I'd rather watch a movie about ruthless but cool Black Manta instead of this cringey Aquaman.
The 1st one sucked so bad, I've watched it 3 times and have yet to be able to stay awake for the ending... at least this one managed to get to the end. They had moments where they could've added some weight to the danger, maybe letting his dad die, to see how AQM dealt with loss, not made the massive threat the entire movie get knocked out with ease as soon as the spirit left his body, and then that revived superpower being done in with a simple triton toss
Yeah, I liked how unlike the first film Black Manta is the main antagonist throughout the whole movie to show he's the true rival of Arthur.
Too bad for the plot his goal wasn't about him earning the superpowerful antlantidean army at his command to conquer atlantis but rather liberating a Sauron-like villain that will do that at his place (witch apparently the plot didn't really needed Sauron since he unceremoniously gets killed without even being able to move). Putting ONLY Black Manta "at the wheel" would've made the plot more straighforward.
Yea .. The Last Kingdom was barely expanded on even though it's in the title
I feel for Jason Mamoa given he seems genuinely enthusiastic about his roles and puts a lot of effort into his performance. Here's hoping he can get some more good roles and can keep being a presence in the future.

I saw Aquaman on streaming just this year, having given up completely on MCU, never liking the Snyderverse at all, and just wanting to fill a little time. It wasn’t perfect, but I actually liked it way more than I thought I would. I thought Momoa looked like a charismatic lead man for once. I always like Patrick Wilson. Manta was done pretty well, the underwater setting was neat and I liked how much it was about his parents. I knew 2 would fail, but I was still kind of rooting for it, despite Heard being in it. Alas.
my exact thoughts
I didn't expect much from the movie, but I was pleasantly surprised - I couldn't take my eyes off it. I will go again
They had an opportunity to do something unprecedented with the post-credits scene, and they duffed it:
Arthur sits on the porch of his house by the sea, looking out onto the waves. In the distance, he sees a red light that stretches across the horizon and slowly grows closer. He runs into the house and and calls out for his son, expecting to brace him for the oncoming tsunami, but he looks out the window to find that the ocean is gone, the horizon is gone, everything is gone, and the red light is obliterating his surroundings. He has time for one word: “S**t.” And then he is gone.
The DCU is dead.
Or you could show Orm eating, I guess.
I mean if you'd be going that far, I'd say go all in and have there be a distant pair of figures running with lightning trailing behind them at the head of the wave of red light. Start the reboot with a completely recast Flash and Reverse Flash revealing that the first movie is picking up at the new universe's Flashpoint Paradox. Hell, maybe don't even bother and just have the two Flashes clearly be animated in the style of Justice League Dark, cause good god that series of films was a thousand times better than the DCEU.
Aqua man was far to powerful in the first movie, He has no weaknesses never gets damaged, and there is no explanation as to why Atlantians are so powerful.
@HOLLASOUNDS the movies have shown that atlanteans live in deep oceans I would argue in this case this is a show don't tell on this one.

I watched 'Predator' last night for the upteenth time. Never equaled in the genre. A true classic.
This film suffered greatly from the whole "Amber Heard situation". It felt like the film was mutilated in postproduction as a result of Heard's law "issues".
I actually enjoyed this movie. No heavy handed preaching, men were strong and had actual motivations, no one had to shrink for others to grow, and like the Drinker mentioned, strong father figures. I honestly wish the timing was better for it
I liked the first one. How would you compare it to that, and is it worth seeing in the theater?
I'm already assuming it's some level of broken from the fact that there was reshoots and re-edits.
For perspective's sake, I liked Shazam 2 but not Blue Beetle, though I wanted to. I didn't see The Flash.
Little Platoon has spoken on that phenomenon before, notably in reference to Mario and Avatar 2. In short, expect more.
I liked it too, it didn't pander to the audience. The idea of global warming being attributed to what is happening underwater in a fantasy world was a new fresh idea and not preaching to the audience as it didn't relate to what is happening on earth. The twist with aquaman's son was good and we felt genuine concern for the characters. The reveal at the end should not have happened. That was a big mistake. The mystery and hiding is much better!
I was already gonna go watch it but happy to hear this about the film. Would rather support this than films that do the exact opposite.
I took my young son to see this last week. He loved it. He’s young enough not not care about the actors or their real life problems or what the internet thinks of them.
For me, it falls into “maybe watch on a long haul flight entertainment system?” If you’re an adult, this film is at best a guilty pleasure that you watch alone and don’t talk about with your mates.
yea it does look okay from what I have seen in trailers and whatnot...like a 6.5 or maybe even a 7 if you're generous...it's just getting a lot of flack because of Amber, the reshoots, and the press constantly churning out hate articles (obviously, they loooove this right now cuz it generates lots of traffic and clicks).
Here's a fact, every bad thing about this film that's mentioned here would be lauded with praise if the movie raked in hundreds of millions of dollars in it's first week due to people just wanting to see a superhero movie.
It's a superhero flick. Not a philosophical or political drama, not a romance, not a deep movie of any sense. The job is to make a movie with cool action scenes, family drama and a good sense of humour. This film had all of that. It's 100% perfect if you just want to sit for 130 minutes and be entertained.

I honestly think the simple recast is the best way of dealing with situations like a controversial actor. The audience will understand why they had to do it and they’ll forgive it if the new actor looks reasonably similar and does a good job and the film is otherwise good. It’s better than the convolutions that result from having to radically change the story by writing them out and/or shoehorning a new character in.

It gives me a more pure experience where I can judge the movie on the merits of its quality and not everything surrounding it. It's much more enjoyable that way. I'm glad they actually portray a father positively for once and Amber Turd is barely in it.
Please explain why the sea people are a 1000x stronger then humans, I dont get it.
Amber Heard was never charged with a crime, but Ezra Miller went on a documented and legit crime spree..and was given his own movie. Bet no complaints about that, right? You're the typical brain dead sexist that follows this clown.

Ever had a training plan in water? Now imagine that for your whole life while constantly withstanding extreme pressure.
I really liked this movie. It was what you want from an Aquaman sequel. Black Manta is great, Orm and Aquaman are good. Good CGI, good fight scenes. Who expects a groundbreaking Aquaman story?
@@grilled_platypus Right but that argument falls apart because many Mammals go deep under water and they can not take a grenade launcher to the chest without so much as a mark or any reaction of any damage. This happened to Aquaman and it looks like He was hit by ping pong ball lol, they Granage launch a Dolfin and watch it get blown to bits just like a human would.
2:19 This did it for me. I totally lost my shit & died 💀💀
Same 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Love Dankula
If you’re gonna lose your shit, at least do it in Amber Heard’s bed.
2:20, a perfect use of Dank.
Pitch Meeting+Drinker is the best combo, to not watch a movie and having a good time 😎
pitch meeting guy is way, way safer in his statements, as he is afraid to offend the big bad wolf I mean woke xD
but yeah, the guy is entertaining
They must be getting scared to go full Woke now! Amber got what she deserved!
Thanks Drinker🍻🍻
This movie was a perfect storm of failure! From Amber Heard to the DCU being cancelled, it really didn’t stand a chance of succeeding!
That's DCEU not DCU.
Big studios should spend more time on chasing real talent and spend less time from inception to production. This thing was delayed almost four years...
I’m not gonna lie I enjoyed the first Aquaman. Sure it had shit acting and looked ugly but it had enough fun action and attractive leads to keep me focused.
Ah come on. Heard was great in the first movie, even being a reason to watch it. I don't care what sins actors/rock bands commit between their work.
Was not "given" a chance to succeed!
Aquaman 2: *exist*
Everyone: "I don't even know who you are."
I agree with this review 100%. I went to see Aquaman 2 last week, having read the reviews beforehand that pretty much slated it. One star reviews across the board. But I had a couple of hours to kill so off I went thinking the worst case scenario is I get a two hour kip.............but I was surprised, because its not terrible. Its definitely not as bad as its being made out to be. he chemistry between patrick wilson and Jason Mamoa is what makes the movie, they're just two likeable fellas and that in and of itself, goes a long way. Its painfully clear that Amber heard has been surgically removed from the final cut, I wonder if, in years to come, that we may get to see the original cut??? But anyway, if you're looking for a movie that you could bring the kids to see without any fear of sexual politics raising its ugly head then this could do the job
The only sequel that I'm looking forward to is The Critical Drinkers take on the new Doctor Who and the literal BBC... Be afraid, be very afraid because the Teddy Bear and the Big Black Dildo have returned!!! 😮 🧸
Thank you for an unbiased helpful review.
This is where you rise above the standard UA-cam reviewer.
Again thanks.
The fact that it's male/father-centered is grounds enough to call it bold, edgy and almost ambitious in 2023/24.
I did briefly consider going to see this because I had a few hours to kill waiting on a friend but I went for a walk instead
Your loss,it's a good movie.
Hope you had a good time!
2:17 Absolutely LOVED the Count Dankula cameo 💯 😂
Idk it looks entertaining and not as cringy as disney movies, i really don't expect depth from a superhero movie, if it is fun to watch and doesn't have woke stuff it is fine by me
It’s so sad that superhero movies are struggling considering the massive amount of content they have to pull from. But for some reason they keep making origin stories and mediocre sequels instead if developing these characters further.
i tend to agree with you but origins get made because studios think audiences are as dumb as studios are and can't get dropped into a story without being lost.
and sequels are only made to double down on what worked about the original
both are primarily concerned with the business side of filmmaking
It's not surprising really. We have 2 studios doing nothing but superhero films. We get about 10 a year. When I was a kid we would get 1 or 2 and we were genuinely excited. Now it feels like a treadmill. Toby Maguire was the 1st Spiderman for decades, but now we have a new one every year or so.
Perhaps it's time to move on from constant reboots and write something original.
@@theebonymawthey don't think audiences are dumb , they know it. Seen multiple comments talking about how story doesn't matter on superhero movie
I think people are just sick and tired of garbage super hero movies.
Appreciate your passion for film criticism. Keep up the great work and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on future movies.
Compared to what superhero movies we had this year, this one was good, imo. Looked good, CGI was beautiful and it had funny moments that made me chuckle (like Orm running in naruto style). All in all, it wasn't a bad superhero movie that pushed for that narrative, and I'm ok with it.
that was the funniest part of the movie. and the fact that Jason got him to eat a cockroach should have been brought up later on for some comedic purpose i think
So Amber Heard's acting was better in a courtroom than an actual Hollywood film!?
Which was still pretty bad in the courtroom. She couldn’t even summon up tears to fake cry.
Nah the reverse
In the movie, did she take a damp?
@@ryleighloughty3307 Take a damp what? 😛
@@englishatheart A pillow damp?
"The eat the bugs" message was pretty infuriating.
That and climate change was pretty bad but the rest was ok
The movie is a little weaker than the first Aquaman, but still very good! 🤩
I'll watch it a second time! This is the best movie of this year!❤❤
I think what we're all missing here at this point from movies, is that no movie carrues the same pride and enjoyment, and true commitment to the story. Old movies were just stories, some good some bad, but filled with aspiring cast and team members that were dedicated to it wholefully. Nowadays, they have the same 15 actors rotating out of characters to make as much money off of popularity, whilst spending the least amount of attention and respect towards the stoty itself. I see characters these days as the actors that play them, no longer James Bond, nor the Amazing Iron Man, just Robert Downey Jr (Understandable, since he looks like he came from the comic itself to play the role) and Jason Mamoa, and Dwayne Johnson, etc.
When are going to get back to Actors remembered by their characters, instead of Characters remembered by their actors?
While I don't fully disagree with your statement, I will remind you that the 50's were full of the same actors portraying roles as well. I do agree though, it would be nice to see some actors stick a trilogy or series of movies before moving on to playing multiple roles in the same year, I also get tired of seeing the same person play roles when it suspends belief before I walk into the theatre as I saw them in something else last month
+1 for putting Count Dankula in it
Whoa, whoa, whoa!!! you’re telling me they have a man playing a father to a child in this movie? Well, there’s something you haven’t seen in years in movies. Definitely going to be protests. 😂
Never thought I'd be so happy getting jump-scared by Dankula. That was pretty damn funny.
I just went to see it for my birthday last night (don't worry, I went out for better, boozy purposes tonight when my bro in law was not working tomorrow and could also be boozy without care 😂). And I enjoyed it. Jason Momoa was great as ever and even made aquaman's laughable points, the bright costume, talking to fish and riding a seahorse cool. I enjoyed the Thor the Dark world like plotline between Arthur and Orm that they even directly addressed. To be honest, I could hardly see how anything of Mera was cut. She seemed to be in it such as she needed to be. Had she been in it more it would have felt unnecessary.
Aquaman 2's timid approach and lack of originality make it forgettable. It indeed seems destined to sink without leaving much of an impact. Maybe the creators should rethink their approach and try to make a difference rather than playing it safe.
The only positive takeaway I've seen so far is that it's nice to see Patrick Wilson put in the gym time since he has to do scenes without a shirt on & he couldn't be looking too pale or too flabby acting next to Jason Momoa. So good on him for trying at least.
😂😂😂.....I agree! He did that very well in my eyes, lol!
Imo, this movie wasn’t horrendous. It was a better than I expected, and better than the Flash. But that’s not saying much
I hate to say it, but I enjoyed it. Mamoa and Wilson seemed to be having a good time. The story was weak and didn’t make a lot of sense, but the pacing was pretty good.
The eating of cockroaches maybe been the high point tho.
The title of this film should of been Aquaman sunk without a trace 😂
Brilliant 😂😂😂😂😂
Sitting in the next theater over waiting for Godzilla to start we could hear the Aquaman audience "booing" when Amber Turd was on screen. It was quite obvious.
Frankly demonstrating healthy fatherhood and family feels like taking a risk these days.....
The combination of critical drinker and count dankula is what I knew i needed, but never thought Id get
I think they did an in depth review of Event Horizon a year or so ago. Chunk it out
I actually kind of enjoyed this movie to be honest. Not anything particularly special but I was entertained enough. I like Orm way better than Aquaman and think Patrick Wilson is far more attractive than Jason Momoa so that may have helped keep my interest haha 😍😂 I'm glad he got some sort of redemption
Not bad
I enjoyed it too
It looks way better than Disney's "The diversity hire Mermaid".
At this point, I'm convinced that DC and Marvel just in on the joke and are competing to see which billion dollar franchise can bomb the most, Aquaman Or Captain Marvel 😂
Captain Marvel for the win. The only thing worse than playing it safe after the fact is being bold with decision everybody hates.
I'll still take Aquaman.
@joeclaridy Captain marvel was garbage.
Aquaman is superior regardless of failure.
Bad timing marks the entire history of the DCU. The time to have created a DC universe was back when the Nolan films first came out and no later. Instead, DC kept changing direction, hesitated, and somehow considered Man of Steel a failure just because it didn't make Avengers money, which was an insane expectation. That being the case, Marvel exhausted all the demand for superheroes that existed during this bubble, then poisoned the well behind them for anyone else.
a boring film makes for a boring review. It's inescapable I suppose.
From 2016 - 2019, movies with Superheroes in them would just automatically make a Billion dollars regardless of how good they were. That time has long passed now.
Pretty much spot on. I did think it was funny that I was rooting for Aquaman’s brother and hating his wife. That kept me entertained!
Spot on!😅
Curiously, Patrick Wilson is how I envision a live action Aquaman (based on decades of the comic) should look!
I would have watched this movie several times when it came out under 1 single condition.
Johnny Depp, wearing a red wig, plays Mera.
Nothing else needed to be changed.
All your criticisms are spot on. It’s a 6/10 buddy cop meets Star Wars movie. Great for an afternoon viewing with the kids.
Aquaman is my favourite superhero so I am definitely biased. But I love both films. The first for bringing the big fish to our screens in all his glory, the second because it was fun, inoffensive, and very comic books. If the character never graces our screens again I won’t be disappointed.
I like the alter ego rashness. Of interest is that during interviews the narrator abandons the persona and discusses intelligently the same basic storytelling issues as with thousands of others since recorded history and Beowulf. No argument with his critical eye. Each generation has its own concept of popular entertainment. I suspect that the same ratio of excellent to crap output stays fairly consistent through history. Humans are really not that much different. The critic's job is to try and point out to the viewer the good, bad, and ugly that the critic understands. This one does s more than decent job with an outrageous persona to stay current. It works.
I just wanted to say I massively enjoyed the Dankula reaction and hope you insert more.
Eight years ago i was in one of those places of previous enjoyment and inspiration.
I think it was the movie of the space broom flight defying physics and reality simultaneously.
Sitting behind me a man brought his two young daughters, most likely to try to share his past of fond memories and inspiration of pure imagination. I could tell about a third of the way through the younglings were agitated and uncomfortable. When they start kicking the chair in front of them that usually is a solid indicator. I was not upset at the children, more disappointed and began to realize their lives would be lacking the enjoyment we older folks hold dear. About the time of the space broom incident one of the girls asked her dad if the movie was over yet. I could feel his momentary deflation but he stood strong and said yes honey it is, would you like to go now? They stood up and got on their way.
The man actually stepped back momentarily and apologized to me for the kicking of my chair and squirming about.
Imagine that.
I said no worries, i'm sorry the kids were disappointed..
He saw the tear run down the side of my face , and i think he understood where my concerns were. Depriving an entire generation of enjoyment.
Crime of the century.
Or at least that release date anyway.
What movie is that? I can't place it by the description and I'd like to give it a watch.
@@АртемийКлочанов Not sure either - the post gives a detailed description of an event which begins with 'I think it was' which isn't a good foundation for what follows because it all depends on whether it was or wasn't that movie . . .
Which is why i refuse to subject my children to the travesty to art that is modern entertainment.
Albeit it's the parents who introduce their little kids to modern entertainment to which they give them access to and abuse the tv as a nanny.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I would be curious to see a director’s cut of this film since Keaton and Affleck were in alternate versions of the original film. I was curious about what they were originally planning on doing with them, especially Keaton before Gunn cut both versions out.
Honestly, i liked the first movie and i'm in love with the visuals and how much work they put into it. Also, it's action without much thinking. Seeing the trailer, i thought it could've been good, and that it would flop badly just because of timing. It's a shame. But i will enjoy it. It deserved better
If you watch it again, have a look at how many story hooks it nabbed from popular movies in the last 10 or so years, if you don't see visual aesthetics or storylines from things like lord of the rings, game of thrones, matrix, lion king, or many other films that were iconic for the time, this just felt like it was doing its best to ride on the coattails of other great movies. FOrget that AH was still there, it was just weak in its individuality, I am only surprised that the villain didn't die by having molten gold poured over his head.
The superhero genre is going through a terrible phase.
Before 2020, we had Infinty War, GotG 1 and 2, Kick Ass... man, those were really good movies. Wtf happened?
woke agenda fatigue
Activists took over, I guess... But who knew we were living in golden era.
Instead of focusing on a few projects a year to limit the inevitable Superhero fatigue they tried to drown people in mediocre sludge instead. Bold choice.
infinity war was trash, cringe fest like all mcu
@@bigben9056 damn you so edgy with your stupid opinion
I agree with you almost completely. The movie was largely forgetable. My son loved it. He's not old enough to be cynical yet.
One thing I do disagree with. I was waiting for Amber Heard's role to be nothing. In the first few minutes she said nothing and I'm like "Oh no, are they completely going to 'ghost' her entire role."
What they did was reduce her role to no fighting, no hero crap. Basically NO GIRL BOSS!! They tried to insult her by making her "JUST" a woman. This was 'their' mistake. (Stay with me)
THIS WAS A GREAT THING. We have been bitching about stupid Girl Boss characters for ages and now we finally got a (dare I say) Strong female character.
Look at her role from this perspective:
- While Aquaman was doing his little narrative at the start, she was being a mother, taking the child to bed or feeding him. Women create homes.
- She came and told Aquaman about the council meeting and she was actually included as the Queen. She came across as a very supportive wife and Queen to a King.
- There were 2 times when she appeared and saved her man. A very supportive wife.
- When the baby was in trouble, she was ferocious. Nothing would have stopped her. THAT'S NOT A GIRL BOSS, THAT'S A MOTHER.
- When they got to the baby, Aquaman told her to take the baby and RUN!! He didn't need her to fight. He needed her to save HIS child. She was the Hero.
Those in charge, in trying to embarrass, humiliate and reduce Amber Heard's role to nothing, inadvertantly created one of the best female characters we have seen this year.
She was a female hero.
Female characters are as strong as men. But we have different jobs. Don't ever mess with a mother's child, that's when you see a real GIRL BOSS!
I know I am stretching things a little, but for me, Mera was one of the shining lights in this movie. They accidentally created a conservative female hero.
The title's not wrong. I unfortunately suffered through this garbage with my mum just a week ago but can't remember a single thing about it, other than it was one of the worst films I had seen all year.
The random dig at Rachel Zeglar literally made me laugh out loud 😂 3:22
Good point about going for broke. That would be the only thing I'd "come back" to these franchises for, some actual off-the-wall lunacy (well-written of course).
Me thinks it's that last part... 🤭
Even my least important universe is better
I saw it last night and was entertained. Yes, it was corny at points but I enjoyed myself and it wasn’t generic like Black Adam or TOO small in scope like Blue Beetle.
It was a straightforward, self contained Superhero movie.
With his kid in the movie, I was really hoping to see him have to cut his hand off to save his kid, and get the bad ass hook hand.
