That's always been a poor analogy, because fences don't remain forever. For a fence to exist, it has to not just be not-taken-down, it has to be constantly maintained. Yes, someone put up the fence for a reason, but we also know that some reasons are good and some reasons are bad. It is probably fair to assume that things are going to change without that fence... but one of the ways they will certainly change is that all the time and effort and materials you put into maintaining the fence will be yours again. This is a good thing. The burden for the fence's existence is not just zero, then, it must JUSTIFY all the time and effort and materials that was and will continue to be spent maintaining it. Perhaps the monster it meant to keep out is gone now... perhaps it never even existed. You're right that it's wiser to find out first. But even if you have no idea, how you would find out would be by taking the fence down in a controlled way in a limited area.

Check out the movie "The Killing Fields". You will see in it how Pol Pot got a clean slate of a people to move his country forward in a direction that he wanted. It's frightening. The movie is based on a true story. It may be easier in the US now more then ever because of the dumbing down of us all through the classrooms. We have much less to be unburdened from because many of us never learned much of our history to begin with.

I knew what was happening a decade ago when our oldest son went into middle school and I asked why they weren’t teaching the bill of rights anymore and they’d removed crucial lessons from their history curriculum. I was told it would be taught in high school. Fast forward to when he got to high school and I asked the same question and was told: that’s a special elective for students with at least a 3.5 GPA who request it and likely going to practice law in college. A psychopath is the only type of human who can disassociate from the past. It is one of the key identifiers of a psychopath. Unlike most people who have done something wrong and feel guilt for a long time. A psychopath feels no remorse. To be unburdened by what has been, is very NOT human.

I am going through a divorce right now with a psychopath and that’s exactly right. They deal strictly in the present, has no regard for the past and often has no concern for the future. They’re devoid of remorse, repentance, etc because there is nothing to ever apologize for - despite being caught red handed on multiple occasions. In their mind, what’s in the past stays there and they are immediately transmitted into a near future utopia where nothing happened, nothing is happening and nothing will happen because everyone is wrong but them. I will say that people who are horribly traumatized are often more likely to become ill with psychopathy as a coping mechanism for what they endured. I believe that’s why my wife is who she is. But until they’re willing to admit it and ask for help, there’s no cracking the armor and getting them out of or facing their own actions. It becomes more of a program and 2nd nature behind the basic needs of life - eating, sleeping, doing, moving on and never looking back, only being present in the moment and looking forward.

I am so glad you finally clipped this part of the podcast! Even at the time I heard it in full I had to go back and listen to this whole section again. I don't think this will be as poignant as it should be for many people, but to my mind, this was definitely the most important and relevant portion of the whole conversation. Love what you're doing here Chris, and have been enjoying your reasonable, nuanced, complex takes for the past 4 years now. Please keep these conversations with Eric and other like minds coming; they brimming with depth and wisdom.

I can relate to this phrase "what can be, unburdened by what has been", and that is when I switched jobs. Boy did I felt unburdened! I started my new job full of optimism, without a care in this world for the problems and headaches of my previous job.

The present and the further are rested in the history; this is true for a country, a culture, a family, and an individual. When someone refuses self-reflection, s/he is a sociopath.
I am going through a divorce right now with a psychopath and that’s exactly right. They deal strictly in the present, has no regard for the past and often has no concern for the future. They’re devoid of remorse, repentance, etc because there is nothing to ever apologize for - despite being caught red handed on multiple occasions. In their mind,
what’s in the past stays there and they are immediately transmitted into a near future utopia where nothing happened, nothing is happening and nothing will happen because everyone is wrong but them.
I will say that people who are horribly traumatized are often more likely to become ill with psychopathy as a coping mechanism for what they endured. I believe that’s why my wife is who she is. But until they’re willing to admit it and ask for help, there’s no cracking the armor and getting them out of or facing their own actions. It becomes more of a program and 2nd nature behind the basic needs of life - eating, sleeping, doing, moving on and never looking back, only being present in the moment and looking forward.

“Unburdened by what has been” is reference to the constitution. The constitution is a document that limits government to protect the people. It is in the way of government domination of the people.
