    Here's my hot take: Open world is a bad format for mainline Pokémon games. As we've seen from Scarlet and Violet, it's literally just walking across a barren mass of land to go to different places, just to do a few battles and then move on. The linear games have fun puzzles between important locations, fun room layouts and even completely optional areas that you won't just walk into and instead have to find yourself.

    One controversial opinion that I have is that I really have a beef with a lot of Pokemon redesigns where the intent is to “fix” them, but all the artists end up doing is completely missing the point of the design and/or completely sanitizing it of personality just to make it more safe and palatable.

    Here is an opinion I have that has gotten backlash:
    I dislike the fact that they are now shiny locking legendary and mythical Pokemon so players will have to pay to hunt them in Pokemon Go. Gift Pokemon to a shiny hunter don’t count bc they don’t have you as the OT. Zacian, Zamazenta, and the Galar birds can only be shiny hunted in Pokemon Go.

    • @AlexsGoogleAccount
      @AlexsGoogleAccount 2 місяці тому +9

      I think it's a bad move to shiny-lock any Pokemon that can be encountered in-game.
      Shiny hunters are the players who are willing to play your game for thousands of hours, who are willing to buy any DLC or peripheral you sell if it makes hunting even slightly easier, and who post their shinies online and make other people want to play your game.
      As a developer, you should recognize that this is one of your most loyal demographics and in turn should avoid shiny-locking unless absolutely necessary, and should allow places to save between cutscenes and starter/legendary encounters.
      Instead, each game seems to get more and more difficult to hunt starters and legendaries, and as a player who doesn't really shiny hunt, but often resets for a a desired nature, it gets really frustrating. I reset in Sun until I found an Adamant or Jolly Rowlet and the cutscene around it was like 2 minutes long.
      And that's not a new issue either. In Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, you can't view your Pokemon's summary screen during the battle with Starly/the rival. They had to go out of their way to disable the feature of viewing your Pokemon just for that battle. Why on earth do they do things like that? How do they think making me wait even longer to see my Pokemon's nature makes the game better?

    • @BeIlG
      @BeIlG 2 місяці тому

      I think backlash vs popular is different things. If your opinion is on twitter, it is a cesspool of mentally unfit people. I believe your opinion of shiny locking legends is the popular opinion. Generally the fans only see it as a cash grab. The only push back I have seen that might make sense is some say that possibly with programming, and having overworld pokemon now, that it would be too difficult or something. I kind of get that however I think it more undermines the capabilities pokemon. They created these games whole world. I am not a coder though so I really couldn't tell you. I could see, as they do make the stories significant with shinies that maybe for lore reasons they are holding them back? not sure there either.

      @@BeIlG I'm pretty convinced it's about making certain pokemon more consistent, since they've been making (especially story-relevant) legendaries more and more consistent characters rather than random examples of their species. It's how people make such a big deal about a controversial topic the devs killed at the idea stage, without considering that they thought about it, decided it was a bad idea, then discarded it, and still hating on them for it. I have only heard different from youtube channels of people that buy multiple copies of the same game and money is no object to them. SO they believe the dlc being half the cost of a 3rd version is fine. HOWEVER, like we saw with SV, they keep removing standard features a base game SHOULD have. Even simple things like rebattling the elite 4 or having the 3rd legendary. The theropodous story makes no sense to keep till the dlc. I personally find it deeply inappropriate that they were withheld. ON TOP OF ALL THIS, e shops will end at some point. This makes the whole of the 3rd version now unable to ever been natively found again. That is very disturbing! It will basically be lost content unless you hack. That is terrible. I really feel like the robotic design fits well with the gimmick of the game especially with the reveal that the professor has been sending Pokemon through a time machine. As such, the final battle with Turo in such a futuristic setting in Violet fits much, much more better than Sada's fight in Scarlet. Also there are sick designs like Iron Valant, Iron Bundle, and Iron Crown. Plus, it's easier to keep up with their names as they all start with the word "Iron." Yeah it's basic but I feel it still fits.

      People are quick to dismiss their uniformity as a flaw or lack of inspiration, but it's honestly as much of a merit as the variety of the past Paradoxes. It makes them feel like a real cohesive team with a common origin, whereas the past ones are more like multiple unrelated dinosaurs each one fending for itself.
      It also makes them more unique, since the only other group with this many similarities (designs, names AND shinies) are the Tapus.

    I think "Dexit" was a great choice to do! I feel like many do tend to only use their favorite Pokémon and otherwise you have the Pokémon you catch in your PC forever. This way the animators do not need to make over 1000 Pokémon in one game...And sure they have been very bad sometimes with the choice to include or not include some Pokémon but I do think we don't need all Pokémon in all the games. Think about how much we got exited for Gogoat to be included in Scarlet and Violet when it wasn't in Sword and Shield. I also think with a limited pool of Pokémon you tend to try different Pokémon and therefore you have other creative ways to make a good team eitherway and maybe you get a new favorite to use.

    I have 2 hot takes so i'll just write them here:
    1. Mythical legendaries are usually forgetable and a wasted potential for a pokemon. They almost never appear in games and if they do, they dont have events and just are mystery gifts. Some mythicals do have events but you need online and they are limited. The events should not be locked to online/limited time. If they are in the game code, they should be in game to get to. Also the movie only/pokemon go- mythicals are the worst and most forgetable, like, movies are fine but they're always only mystery gifts so they dont feel special. And meltan, who?
    2. HGSS are good games but felt short as remakes. I love the games, I really do but the replayability is so awful sometimes because of the dex (where are the johto mons like houndour etc?), Evolution items (i always trade from sinnoh games so i can use scizor/ninetales etc), limited/bad TMs in main game (there are the good ones yes but like, steel wing is post game?), The levels are still an oddity.
    Overall ORAS did much better as a remake and have better replayability imo

    • @emperorcubone
      @emperorcubone  2 місяці тому

      Well I always trade over a team of Pokemon to use in a new HGSS game so I don't really worry about the lacking dex. But I tend to agree on the mythicals; Mew was special because it was the ONLY one like that, when there are 3-4 mythicals every time they all kind of run together...

    If I had to post a controversial opinion, I'd say that I miss the excitement of progressing through the game to find specific and special Pokemon and stronger Pokemon the more you earn badges or credits in-game. The wild area in swsh was a good idea but if I basically got my entire team( including a powerful ice/ dragon type) before the first/ second gym, I feel unmotivated to go through the entire game. I want Pokemon to be endemic to a certain location like real life animals, only making a few available everywhere ( probably make them have better iv or something as you progress) and another thing I miss is going to Pokemon center just to switch your Pokemon! There's no more HMs so it isn't a hassle. In newer games where being in the wild is really dangerous, the fear factor is basically gone because you can have like a million Pokemon switched in and save your main Pokemon. I want to have atleast some anime restrictions in the game so it feels like I'm going on a journey myself, and it's making me feel disconnected with my own Pokemon if I can replace them like apps on my phone whenever I get bored with them on the go

    My hot take sword and shield were not bad.
    1st of the extreme linearity is a thing that everyone hates about these games sure it's just go from the base of the region to the top but Pokémon has been quite linear since the very beginning sure it wasn't go from 1 side of the region to the other but the games were still very linear
    the wild area was amazing certain parts of the wild area change every day the weather effecting the spawns was a great idea and they should have done it sooner.
    The music direction was very unique and a lot more different from the previous games and a lot of the songs are very enjoyable and memorable.
    The game wasn't awful in the graphics department sure it wasn't amazing but I think there fine there by far better than the previous mainline games sun and moon Omega ruby and Alpha sapphire X and Y sword and shield also look better than the most recent games Legends Arceus and Scarlet and Violet and I can imagine that Legends Z won't be as good either.
    The villains plan while dumb isn't as bad as some other villains Maxie and Archie really didn't think about the consequences of there actions and how much problems there plans going forward would cause also Lisanders plan to rid the world of ugly people is beyond dumb and Giovanni while a better villain than chairman rose is a bit of a generic character.
    Sword and Shield really don't feel like the same game (well at least not as much as other Pokémon games) this idea of version exclusive gyms and characters was really good and I did find it kind of funny how the gym tests were just re textured versions oof the other games gym tests and they did still make sense a snowstorm or a Sandstorm theme and boxing gloves or Zombie hands. Sword and shield set the base for what a different Pokémon game version should be now all we need to see is a version exclusive Area
    A lot if the Pokémon designs are really cool and unique I would say gen 8 was where Pokémon started to feel less like Pokémon and more like there own thing and that isn't at all bad.

    I fully get the gen 1 mindset. I think they all go around what you grew up with. If you grew up before pokemon and then experienced them in the first games, anime cards, and then the sequel in gen 2, You will not that gen 3 on were not the same thing we had before. The pokemon concept ended in gen 2. Like the creators said, the didn't plan anything else after gen 2. SO ultimately what pokemon was is fully ended in those games. Everything after truely is more of a spin off than a sequel. The trademark pokemon styles changed, the legendary concepts changed, yet the look of the games stagnated. They looked like the same thing. It didn't feel different enough and derivate away from what many viewed pokemon as in the early gens. By gen 4 they jumped the shark. They jumped to world creating and ending concepts. Final plot type things because you can't have more simple concepts. It disrupted the previous generations by now saying that those were not important, It created VERY DIFFERENT art styles, but ultimately what was terrible about it was it remained basically the same play of game. It even had the first overlap of a starter type. It felt SUPER desperate and thus felt like pokemon was out of ideas. I alway equate it to the 90s x men. They are fighting police type crimes till 3 seasons later they are fighting a creature that destroys universes. You cannot continue a series back to fighting petty theft after you saved the galaxy. Your series is effectively over. This was pokemon in gen 4. OF COURSE if you started with the world ending concepts you cannot feel what you lost, not can you appreciate the subtle nature of the original. This is the root of the gen debates online. It just is what it is. Gen 4 is great in a vacuum but for the series it was really bad. Gen 3 was this too. It is what it is.

    I generally have less of a problem with leaks of beta materials for older games, but there is still a problem with regards to beta Pokémon specifically. And that is that GF often likes to go back to their ever-growing well of rejected beta Pokémon designs and revise them for later games. Just off the top of my head, there's several evolutions and baby Pokémon that were originally intended for Gen II that got cut and later revived for Gen IV instead. Similarly, Shellos and Gastrodon were originally going to be Hoenn Pokémon.
    However, to my knowledge, this has never happened after the beta design became public knowledge. For example, we didn't know about or see Gen II's beta Leafeon until long after we got the Gen IV official Leafeon, and I think it is very likely that we would not have gotten an official Leafeon if the beta design had leaked beforehand. And I'm not saying this is somehow unique to Leafeon - all of the really cool beta designs that we've seen, I'm pretty sure they have no chance of ever being revived as actual Pokémon, specifically /because/ we've seen them, which is just unfortunate.

    Majority of the VGC being accepting of genning in competitive formats, has definitely hurt the community on the long run. The only people that tend to hit the top player positions in most of the regions all seemed to have dubious teams going off past records like the Dream Ball Agieslash or all the max iv shiny legendaries we saw all over gen 5, a legitimate player is not gonna readily have acess to those (that are actually possible)without deep time investment/sacrifice of time that they could put into other pokemon.

      I agree.
      I like when ROM Hacks increase the difficulty of battles, but also give the players more resources and strategies at their disposal.
      I think one major missed opportunity for this was the gen 3 remakes.
      The changes to the EXP Share more than tripled the amount of experience you collect throughout the game, catching EXP also increased the exp gain, the reusable TMs changed the incentive so that if a TM is even slightly better than your existing moves, that you should use it on your Pokemon, and the Mega Stones, rarely used by any other trainers, give the player an advantage, and if you have any difficulty in the Elite Four, there are nearly 30 legendaries you have access to.
      I LOVE all of these changes.
      But the game wasn't balanced around them. Enemy trainer teams and levels are still approximately the same that they were in the Gen 3 games. The level curve is absolutely busted and the player has access to so many tools that NPCs never use.
      I played Omega Ruby recently and I took it slow: I explored as much as I could, I planted berries, I rematched every trainer I passed by, caught every Pokemon I didn't have and caught or defeated most Dexnav phenomena, I did daily events... And going into the 5th gym I had a fully-evolved team in the 50s. Going into the Elite Four, they were in the late 80s. It took me nearly 2 years to finish the game because I kept putting it down because of how boring the battles were.
      And obviously not doing those things would have made the levels more evenly, but these are all intended mechanics that users are intended to utilize and that developers should be balancing for.
      Giving players so many resources and advantages doesn't have to make the game stupid easy, but should have been viewed as an opportunity to showcase the game's deep battling system and strategies.

    I think Legends Arceus was a terrible game. Don't get me wrong, I liked the concept enough to pre-order but once I started playing I got bored after a few hours. The game was severely unpolished, looking bland and incomplete. You would walk into some random forest hear the Eterna Forest remix, feel that nostalgia kick in as you enjoy the sound then look at your surroundings and realize it feels nothing like Eterna Forest did in the original games. The game-play was repetitive after a while and the only break from the boring game-play was exploration (since trainer battles were waaay to rare and the battling system was inherently unfair to players too) but exploration was disappointing because, again, everything looked so bland and there wasn't much to find other than crafting materials. The whole game felt like a bad tech demo you would play for free at a con than a 60 dollar game that you'd expect to be worth the price (it's not). I would love a FINISHED and POLISHED Legends game and I hope Z-A is that game but Gamefreak's record kinda gets in the way of that and all the fans praising Arceus just makes Gamefreak think they can keep putting out unfinished games since they'll be bought and praised anyway.

    For me, it depends on the leaks.
    If its a leak saying a new Pokemons name, then it is fine for me. Where i draw the line is the design of the Pokemon.
    My hot take.
    Open World (At least in its current capacity) doesn't really work for Pokemon, especially since you still need to keep some form of linearity, because of the story, which also means you cannot really go - Gym level scaling based on your own party, but you need to do it around the story (Which basically already is a thing anyways). Its not only this as well. Because you needing to keep the linearity in tact, you cannot have level scaling for wild Pokemon either, because the story is again involved. Another point against Open World, is that the Pokemon itself in its current capacity don't interact with eachother in the wild, which imo, makes the nature of the Open World game pointless if the creatures you are supposed to catch, walk around aimlessly like robots.
    I actually think Galar worked better in this regard, since there was a mixture of open world (Wild area), routes and hidden and visible/walking Pokemon, you could also see that with the story as well. Like, i did a gym in Paldea earlier than i was supposed to, after that the Nemo storyline didn't make sense anymore.
