  • The Pokémon games are full of wonder and exploration, but also occasionally frustration and sorrow because of certain aspects like taking out your favorite feature or maybe there's one Pokémon that's too dominant in a Generation... But there are no shortage of opinions people have that might be considered controversial, so let's see what some of you had to say are your Pokémon "Hot Takes!"

it's not the leak I dislike. It's how people make such a big deal about a controversial topic the devs killed at the idea stage, without considering that they thought about it, decided it was a bad idea, then discarded it, and still hating on them for it. Nevermind that it has a basis in folklore, or previous game lore, they devs never even implemented the idea people are going crazy over.

I have 2 hot takes so i'll just write them here:
    1. Mythical legendaries are usually forgetable and a wasted potential for a pokemon. They almost never appear in games and if they do, they dont have events and just are mystery gifts. Some mythicals do have events but you need online and they are limited. The events should not be locked to online/limited time. If they are in the game code, they should be in game to get to. Also the movie only/pokemon go- mythicals are the worst and most forgetable, like, movies are fine but they're always only mystery gifts so they dont feel special. And meltan, who?
    2. HGSS are good games but felt short as remakes. I love the games, I really do but the replayability is so awful sometimes because of the dex (where are the johto mons like houndour etc?), Evolution items (i always trade from sinnoh games so i can use scizor/ninetales etc), limited/bad TMs in main game (there are the good ones yes but like, steel wing is post game?), The levels are still an oddity.
Overall ORAS did much better as a remake and have better replayability imo

    • @emperorcubone
      @emperorcubone  4 години тому

Well I always trade over a team of Pokemon to use in a new HGSS game so I don't really worry about the lacking dex. But I tend to agree on the mythicals; Mew was special because it was the ONLY one like that, when there are 3-4 mythicals every time they all kind of run together...

I think my hot take would be I feel like Violet's Paradox mons are better than Scarlet's Paradox mons. I really feel like the robotic design fits well with the gimmick of the game especially with the reveal that the professor has been sending Pokemon through a time machine. As such, the final battle with Turo in such a futuristic setting in Violet fits much, much more better than Sada's fight in Scarlet. Also there are sick designs like Iron Valant, Iron Bundle, and Iron Crown. Plus, it's easier to keep up with their names as they all start with the word "Iron." Yeah it's basic but I feel it still fits.

People are quick to dismiss their uniformity as a flaw or lack of inspiration, but it's honestly as much of a merit as the variety of the past Paradoxes. It makes them feel like a real cohesive team with a common origin, whereas the past ones are more like multiple unrelated dinosaurs each one fending for itself.
It also makes them more unique, since the only other group with this many similarities (designs, names AND shinies) are the Tapus.
And lastly, it doesn't completely stop them from having their own variety as they incorporate multiple devices/modifications into their designs.

I think Legends Arceus was a terrible game. Don't get me wrong, I liked the concept enough to pre-order but once I started playing I got bored after a few hours. The game was severely unpolished, looking bland and incomplete. You would walk into some random forest hear the Eterna Forest remix, feel that nostalgia kick in as you enjoy the sound then look at your surroundings and realize it feels nothing like Eterna Forest did in the original games. The game-play was repetitive after a while and the only break from the boring game-play was exploration (since trainer battles were waaay to rare and the battling system was inherently unfair to players too) but exploration was disappointing because, again, everything looked so bland and there wasn't much to find other than crafting materials. The whole game felt like a bad tech demo you would play for free at a con than a 60 dollar game that you'd expect to be worth the price (it's not). I would love a FINISHED and POLISHED Legends game and I hope Z-A is that game but Gamefreak's record kinda gets in the way of that and all the fans praising Arceus just makes Gamefreak think they can keep putting out unfinished games since they'll be bought and praised anyway.

    2. More games should do what Black & White did with its dex. Making us have to actually use a team of the new Pokémon helped us connect more with that gen long term, as opposed to using the same Pokémon in every game. 2:47 It seems like they're hellbent on forcing everyone to play Pokémon cooperatively. Even in Pokémon GO there are more and more things that you can only do in a group and not individually. It seems like desperation for them to try to use players as promoters of the games in this way.

My hot take sword and shield were not bad.
1st of the extreme linearity is a thing that everyone hates about these games sure it's just go from the base of the region to the top but Pokémon has been quite linear since the very beginning sure it wasn't go from 1 side of the region to the other but the games were still very linear
the wild area was amazing certain parts of the wild area change every day the weather effecting the spawns was a great idea and they should have done it sooner.
The music direction was very unique and a lot more different from the previous games and a lot of the songs are very enjoyable and memorable.
The game wasn't awful in the graphics department sure it wasn't amazing but I think there fine there by far better than the previous mainline games sun and moon Omega ruby and Alpha sapphire X and Y sword and shield also look better than the most recent games Legends Arceus and Scarlet and Violet and I can imagine that Legends Z won't be as good either.
The villains plan while dumb isn't as bad as some other villains Maxie and Archie really didn't think about the consequences of there actions and how much problems there plans going forward would cause also Lisanders plan to rid the world of ugly people is beyond dumb and Giovanni while a better villain than chairman rose is a bit of a generic character.
Sword and Shield really don't feel like the same game (well at least not as much as other Pokémon games) this idea of version exclusive gyms and characters was really good and I did find it kind of funny how the gym tests were just re textured versions oof the other games gym tests and they did still make sense a snowstorm or a Sandstorm theme and boxing gloves or Zombie hands. Sword and shield set the base for what a different Pokémon game version should be now all we need to see is a version exclusive Area
A lot if the Pokémon designs are really cool and unique I would say gen 8 was where Pokémon started to feel less like Pokémon and more like there own thing and that isn't at all bad.

Great Video! Regarding the raids opinion, Sword and Shield may be a fair comment but not impossible to do alone if I remember them correctly(I only really did Dynamax Adventures solo). I can't think of a single raid that you cannot solo in S/V. Myself and many others make solo raid builds for all the raids that come out in that game. NPC's don't effect the raid timer and generally can be quite useful at times. I understand not caring for them but they are totally possible/easy without online play. I used to hate raids too but once I put my head down and learned more about them, they became very fun for me as a solo player. :)

If I had to post a controversial opinion, I'd say that I miss the excitement of progressing through the game to find specific and special Pokemon and stronger Pokemon the more you earn badges or credits in-game. The wild area in swsh was a good idea but if I basically got my entire team( including a powerful ice/ dragon type) before the first/ second gym, I feel unmotivated to go through the entire game. I want Pokemon to be endemic to a certain location like real life animals, only making a few available everywhere ( probably make them have better iv or something as you progress) and another thing I miss is going to Pokemon center just to switch your Pokemon! There's no more HMs so it isn't a hassle. In newer games where being in the wild is really dangerous, the fear factor is basically gone because you can have like a million Pokemon switched in and save your main Pokemon. I want to have atleast some anime restrictions in the game so it feels like I'm going on a journey myself, and it's making me feel disconnected with my own Pokemon if I can replace them like apps on my phone whenever I get bored with them on the go

    • @emperorcubone

I would agree with that! I generally have less of a problem with leaks of beta materials for older games, but there is still a problem with regards to beta Pokémon specifically. And that is that GF often likes to go back to their ever-growing well of rejected beta Pokémon designs and revise them for later games. Just off the top of my head, there's several evolutions and baby Pokémon that were originally intended for Gen II that got cut and later revived for Gen IV instead. Similarly, Shellos and Gastrodon were originally going to be Hoenn Pokémon.
However, to my knowledge, this has never happened after the beta design became public knowledge. For example, we didn't know about or see Gen II's beta Leafeon until long after we got the Gen IV official Leafeon, and I think it is very likely that we would not have gotten an official Leafeon if the beta design had leaked beforehand. And I'm not saying this is somehow unique to Leafeon - all of the really cool beta designs that we've seen, I'm pretty sure they have no chance of ever being revived as actual Pokémon, specifically /because/ we've seen them, which is just unfortunate.

Scarlet and Violet have their issues but I think the pokemon models in the game look great. I think modeling is getting better over time as they've even started reworking older pokemon to look better, eg. Kanto starters and Persian, and also bird pokemon are no longer stuck in the air or on the ground, they alternate in and out of battle, and also some pokemon even have different battle stances.

The protagonists of Scarlet/Violet are the most spoiled out of any Pokémon protagonist. They enroll in a high-status school, are personally visited by the principal to get a starter, are given a LEGENDARY not even an hour after that, are given free reign of the region, have immediate and plentiful access to items that were super rare in previous regions both in stores and just infinitely respawning as random drops on the ground like vitamins and bottle caps, can gain superpowers from eating sandwiches that potentially make for the best odds of having shiny encounters in the series, canonically obtains THREE Masterballs with the ability to make as many as they want thanks to the item printer, and are able to get guaranteed catches on a number of legendary and mythical Pokémon, even to the point of repossessing another trainers' legendary Pokémon after publicly humiliating said trainer, and even that was after stealing away said trainers' dream scenario from him!

For me, it depends on the leaks.
If its a leak saying a new Pokemons name, then it is fine for me. Where i draw the line is the design of the Pokemon.
    My hot take.
Open World (At least in its current capacity) doesn't really work for Pokemon, especially since you still need to keep some form of linearity, because of the story, which also means you cannot really go - Gym level scaling based on your own party, but you need to do it around the story (Which basically already is a thing anyways). Its not only this as well. Because you needing to keep the linearity in tact, you cannot have level scaling for wild Pokemon either, because the story is again involved. Another point against Open World, is that the Pokemon itself in its current capacity don't interact with eachother in the wild, which imo, makes the nature of the Open World game pointless if the creatures you are supposed to catch, walk around aimlessly like robots.
I actually think Galar worked better in this regard, since there was a mixture of open world (Wild area), routes and hidden and visible/walking Pokemon, you could also see that with the story as well. Like, i did a gym in Paldea earlier than i was supposed to, after that the Nemo storyline didn't make sense anymore.

It would also help challenge the design team. I don’t really care for leaks, mainly because they’re not always reliable. Unless Pokémon team says something I don’t pay attention. I think we should just see; starters, pikachu clone, and legendaries. Just see them, as the game gets closer to launch. Let us learn their names see how they move with basic attacks maybe. Then as soon as we know what promotional Pokémon people get for early copies or whatever they should have all the information on at least the starters or the clone but not both and let us learn as we go. We’re supposed to discover a new region after all.

The only people that tend to hit the top player positions in most of the regions all seemed to have dubious teams going off past records like the Dream Ball Agieslash or all the max iv shiny legendaries we saw all over gen 5, a legitimate player is not gonna readily have acess to those (that are actually possible)without deep time investment/sacrifice of time that they could put into other pokemon.
Like if genning didnt cause other players (specially legitimate players) to hit the stat ceiling, we would probably see alot more players get into competitive or at least have more interest in it since everyone would be on even footing.

Mewtwo pandering really is kinda ridiculous, but the Kalos thing does make sense. Canonically no Gen 1 protag catches it and it runs away to Kalos to a place that pretty much is a natural reserve. It's it having multiple forms, specially Megas is what doesn't make sense. Specially because Mega forms is something about species evolving to use Meteor/MegaWeapon energy. Something that a man made Pokémon can't adapt to, realistically, not without Mew also being able to do the same.
My hot take is that Game Freak does a horrible job at picking signature Pokémon for trainers and it has only been getting worse. Seems like they have no synnergy when drawing most humans and the Pokémon that go with them, when their signature Pokémon should be the forefront of a region's design, even if makes it so that you need to add another 30 Pokémon to your Pokédex in order to do it.
Gen 9 has examples of that out of the wazoo.
Arven not having a Cyclizar is ridiculous. Not having a Dragon Eeveelution for Penny is ridiculous.
Even with the flimsy way they use Terastal, Katy not having any pastry/food Pokémon is ridiculous.
Brassius not having a Brambleghast is ridiculous.
Iono never touching a Magnemite or a Sandy Shocks; or having her outfit be more inspired on Bellibolt is ridiculous.
Kofu being a traditional sushi chef in a place that should be Portugal with a Marluza instead of a Cod is ridiculous. Even if you do want to keep him as a sushi chef, him not having Dodonzo nor Tatsugiri is also ridiculous.
All of Larry's teams are super boring even if he's popular for being boring.
Ryme, Tulip and Grusha are kind of ok. Eri kinda is... but
Giacomo not having a Lokix is insane.
Mela not having a Scovillain is insane.
Atticus not having a Grafaiai is insane.
Ortega not having a Tinkaton anywhere on his team, or a Fairy-type Terastal Revavroom is bonkers.

Not sure I agree on the raids. Pretty much every 7* raid has had a solo strat available within hours. Plus, they're not essential apart from a couple of cases such as Walking Wake/Iron Leaves as other than the stats and Mightiest Mark nearly all of the Pokémon can be caught in-game.

I don't like leaks when it's talking about new games coming out. Especially when it's in the thumbnail so I can't avoid it. Even when I didn't look it up.
An unpopular opinion I guess I have is that I don't like when pokemon has competitive NPCs like in the blue berry academy or how bdsp is. I know that some people in the community are but, I don't think pokemon should force us to play that way just to complete the game. I think they should have brought back the difficulty system from black and white 2 and refined it to where easy, normal and hard mode are right there at the begining. I hope someone sees this.

I love those kinds of "hypocrites hot takes"
The 2nd hot take: I lose my faith in the franchise with gen 4. Rival should be bratty, mean and teasing.
Also the 2nd hot take: I never play games after gen 3. A gen that dont have a bratty, mean and teasing rival (blue/garry in FR/LG kinda doesnt count since hes from gen 1).

Somehow my option that third releases are better than DLC and the games shouldn’t be split in 2 are controversial

    • @emperorcubone
      @emperorcubone  5 годин тому

I'm 1000% on board with 3rd games returning; everyone fights me and says DLC is better because it doesn't "force" you to buy the same game twice, so it's a discount at $30, but that's crazy! Nobody is Forcing you to buy the first game you KNOW is unfinished because they can patch it in DLC later, and you're paying $90 for a complete game which is way worse than waiting a bit and paying the normal price (like for Platinum or Emerald...)

    • @jmurray1110
      @jmurray1110 4 години тому

      Yeah
I go so far as to call the split version an unfinished tech demo becatse it’s literally not finished it’s rush and needs the third edition to actually release (well with the hood ones crystal not having all the dex was pretty terrible for a definitive edition)

  • @vaalalves

As somebody who played pokemon blue on the original brick Gameboy (no colors and no back lighting)... I love the 3d sprites. Just some pokemon have movements and stuff that I can't stand. Like the fully evolved water starter from scarlet and violet. It's little dance is annoying to me.

Here's a take, a large amount of the fanbase cut Gamefreak way too much slack, Pokémon Sword & Shield were hot garbage with Scarlet & Violet only being better in it's character writing and basically nothing else, but the moment anyone suggests that the LARGEST GROSSING MEDIA FRANCHISE IN THE WORLD should put more time/effort into the games suddenly "PoKeMoN fAnS aRe EnTiTlEd AnD sElFiSh", even more so now that Gamefreak is doing DLC now meaning you need to pay EVEN MORE MONEY for more half-baked content.
And before anyone says something like "Well I enjoyed Sword & Shield, etc." Here's something to consider, you can enjoy bad/poorly made things but that doesn't erase their faults

Hoen have better desing. That when pokemon creation dont priority theme over desing
I would say the game is exclusive to everyone. Layely, adult aim media are far immature. Limitations create creativity.
Maybe offline raid should really be 3 v 1 battle. So u have more control.
Gen 4 fix and balance competitive battle.but I dislike the Gen region and story.
I don't mind switching starter trio
It also nice they add difficulty setting.
