Beautiful job. I know how much work it takes. I built a wooden model of a Spanish galleon years ago. I only have 2 qualms with the model. In the books by Patrick O'Brian, the Surprise had iron guns except for her 2 bow chasers which were Captain Aubrey's prized personal property. Also, this is a kings ship, and a warship, as such she carried royals above her t'gallant sails. These would have been set on yards on the t'gallant mast above the t'gallant sails. The t'gallant masts are too short for this in this model. And, when the royal yards were struck down on deck, they would have been stowed beneath the boats. Just a few technical points.
I was on the Surprise about a month ago. The Museum is working on the Star of India at this time. The Surprise has not sailed since 2012. They are talking about getting her back out sailing. She just requires a very large well trained crew. Great project.
I have brought the deagostini paint set(admiralty paints the the hms victory)would the be the same colours for the surprise -yellow ochre and French blue??
Hi. Beautiful Build. I am in the process of building the Surprise but I have mislaid the manual. I was wondering if you still have the build manual for the Surprise. Thanks
carlo63 Morabito I currently dont have a occre kit but from what i can tell in some videos i saw, is the instructions and the way the kit is packaged is some what the same to AL kits. Overall i cant really tell only for the matter of fact that the boxes are way different lol but I heard occre kits are really good maybe better the AL's kits
ApexPredator777 AL's kits and Occre kits same quality. However Occre has far superior customer service. They went beyond expectations furnishing extra parts whereas AL customer service dose not exist or cannot be reached. I suggest AL for your third build so you'll have enough leftover wood to complete project.
I could build that, but living in USA it’s difficult to obtain information on how to purchase a kit like this. Can anyone help. Can you tell me the scale of model?
hey Bill i am going to be building the surprise from AL. after looking at tons of build logs i noticed something that every builder did that worries me. every builder but you. at the start of the hull planking in basswood i noticed everyones planks would point up at the bow instead of remaining near horizontal. but yours stayed horizontal so when you started the sapele planks it stayed level. how did you keep the planks from riding up at the bow?
Almost 10 years later...
This still a masterpiece

You know, I would like to make models like this, but I know I’ll never get them to look as good as this one.
Wow, I guess being OCD has its' rewards, eh? Gorgeous... a lifetime achievement. Russell Crowe will pay you handsomely, I'm sure.
This frigate looks better than the real thing
*_SURPRISE!_*
If I were to do this kit, it would resemble Whistler's Mother after Mr Bean 'fixed' it.
Супер!
Santa Ana is a very good project
Wonderful job. Was this a kit or did you manufacture it from blueprints? How long was the whole process
ARTESANIA LATINA kit
How long did it take you to finish it?
I suggest Santisima Trinidad. By OcCre.
