Gordon, I think your supervisor needs a bigger bed. Beautiful work that you do. Such an inspiration for me and my builds. Thank you. Let’s get on with replacing his bed now.
Thank you much. And he does have a bigger day bed. If he gets too comfy, he won't keep an eye on me. Ill be sure to get another shot of him in his Lab sized work spot when I post the Constitution build. It will be a while before that.
Thanks Greg. Thought I wrote a reply but it's not here. I didn't have a very good time with this build, because of the instructions and drawings. Just wanted to get her done.
I just loved that movie. I’ve always liked everything Russel Crowe has ever done. , BuIm Really surprised he hasn’t done some really serious action movies like Denzel Washington or Jason Stratham and especially Liam Neeson . Never the less ,it’s a definite masterpiece!, and do another.
Hi TC this ship is now the Surprise. She started her life as a Rose replica built in 1970. Since then she has changed hands several times as the Rose. The present owners have named her Surprise.
Hi Rodney Yes you are correct. Even as the Rose, she was not the original but a replica. When ships are built and sold, they most often will be renamed by the new owners. With retro fits above and below the water line, she has become a shadow of her former 1970's original self. Thanks for your comment.
Hi Gordon, I was wandering if you have any more photos or videos from this build. I've just started this one and it is beginning to be a nightmare (different things in instruction, different in schemes). I'm currently puzzled by beams that are supposed to bend upwards. More photos or vids would help as the schemes are not showing everything.
I made a Latina almost just like this and I found bending the planks around the hull and making it look semi professional was hard. These ships take me almost 2 months
Hello all. I wanted to give a quick review of this kit. First of all, the plans were the worst I have ever seen. For many reasons. The drawings were not too bad, other than showing things that were different from what was in the kit. Everything was so confusing, for example, every block (pulley) had their own number. this means that if you wanted to know if it was a large single, you had to find the number, probably on another sheet. it would give you a size in mils, 1x3 and that's it. You had to look at the rigging plans to see how many lines ran through it. If anyone has built a kit from Mamoli, could you leave your thoughts and opinions in the coments below. Thanks much.
The REAL ship on which the story was built was NOT SURPRISE it was HMS PHOEBE. (a very similar frigate). The real target of the voyage was NOT FRENCH, it was AMERICAN USS ESSEX. (I know because my forebear Allen Gardiner, served as a midshipman in the Phoebe - then a renowened 'attack ship', with a very keen crew!)
Hi Adam . Sorry but I don't. Are you doing the same kit that I did? You might find another build of this kit on you tube. This kit was pretty poor on the instructions. If you are building this kit, I might be able to help. If you tell me what part you are stuck on, I can look at my plans and give an opinion. If you want, we could go to email and not this You Tube page. Let me know.
Hi Gordon! First off, exceptional work! I’m a beginner to ship modeling and just finished my first ship (Mini Mamoli USS Constitution, scale 1:330). It came out fairly decent for my first build. I’m about to purchase another project at a larger scale (1:65), and of course, this will not have a premade hull like my first model. I’m a bit intimidated about assembling the hull myself with all the planks and painting required…Any tips?
Hi Jason and welcome to the world of ship modeling. I understand your concerns about planking. It is the hardest part of a build. You might want to start with a boat that has double planking. That way you get good practice on the first layer which has the thick planks. you don't need to be too neat as you can fill gaps and low spots, then fill low places with wood filler and sand smooth to prep for the second and thinner layer. As you know, UA-cam is a treasure trove of how to vids on ship modeling. Watch as many as you can. Only practice makes perfect. I do recommend OcCre for your models as they are the best. I do have six other models on you tube. Check them out, and let me know if I can be of any other help. Good luck, and have a fun build.
This is from Mamoli as the vid shows. You could order it from them on line, or other model companies might have them in stock. You could try a search and see what turns up good luck.
Hi John I also thought it was a great movie. Russell Crowe is most believable in every role he has done. I do have six other ships on you tube. You can see them here- ua-cam.com/channels/6f6YVQqe6Z6yoUK1DEExwg.html Thanks for the comment.

Teak deck look GREAT, looks like the crew just finished holystoning and flogging😊👍
Thanks A little bleeding into the wood on the ends, oh well.
She looks amazing. The workmanship is wonderful. Think I'll go throw my current ship in the bin lol ;)

The ship in San Diego which was used in the movie Master and Commander was previously the ship Rose, and was in no way a descendant of HMS Surprise.

@@SimonGardiner-bj3pq And Jack Aubrey is a career clone of the "Sea Wolf" himself, Cochrane...

Nice video... but spoiled, like so many videos, by awful background music. 😕
Don't listen to it. Seems like a no brainer to me
