The bombastic energy, the fun that's had by the singers, the improvisation, all of it makes for such a fantastic genre that I wish got used more often in other media, like video games and the like.
The idea that the Gospels went from being very pointed with their singing and pronouncing every homophone to getting almost more relaxed and expressive with their runs is really conducive to the story; where you had the past, carved literally into stone, unmoving and precise, transitioning into the present which is ever shifting at a whirlwinds rate, is perfect. I also love how in all the Gospel Truth's we have each Muse tell their own part of the story. All different parts and different perspectives that make up the whole truth. But when it came to Megara and her love song? They were all in unison, as if there were no other ways to look at it, and it was just a simple, straight forward thing of her being in love.
The Gospels are almost a microcosm of gospel singing itself where, as the coach here says, songs have been changed and sung more spontaneously over time.
The soundtrack to this movie changed my life! It effortlessly brought the grandeur of cinematic orchestra to the flamboyance of Gospel and then to the smooth, easy listening of R&B . This score was a complete game changer for DISNEY! Shout out to Lillias White for her advocacy of the portrayal of black women in film, she fought for the aesthetic of the muses to match the SOUND.
I did the shoulder move at 1:43 at the same time as you. This movie was also what inspired my 11 year old self at the time to look into Broadway and I never looked back.
My Classical Literature professor once told me Hercules is structured like an ancient Greek play, with the muses taking the role of the chorus. You're right in saying they're the narrators, because the chorus in a greek play was meant to provide narration and voice the audience's thoughts.
"I Won't Say" has always been one of my fav disney songs, its incredible. and so your voice omg! really enjoyed your singing and analysis of these awesome songs

The one who corrects Vase I believe is Clio -Muse of History. And the one who leads 'Young Herc was mortal now' is Melpomene - Muse of Tragedy. Fun side note, the group leader, Calliope, is the mother of legendary musician Orpheus.
IMO the Muses are the best part of this movie, just flawless gospel singing! Those bright gospel vowels sound like Easter morning to my ears, the sound of absolute joy and triumph. It's such a perfect genre for a Greek hero story. Your technical commentary about singing is always so comprehensible and incredibly informative in addition to your wonderful singing and enthusiasm, Jaron.
Love love love how the voices they chose for the solos fit the vibe of the story telling so well. “I won’t say I’m in love” has been my favorite Disney song for ages. You just made me fall in love with this movie even more!!!
I love how u hear such different blends with the muses as well because when Lillias starts as Calliope, she starts sweet & articulate while Roz starts all grunty & powerful with Lachanze, Vaneese & Cheryl on the harms then Lillias starts belting it out. Then Lillias jumps to the Low Harms on “Tho honey it might seem impossible thats the gospel truth” while (I could be wrong) Lachanze & Cheryl jump to the main line top harms & belts for the first part then go back to Lillias & (I could be wrong as well) Lazhanze on the top for the second “tho honey” excetra like that song was done so well especially with every muse slaying the opening songs showing off their skills
Every single time i hear the muses singing, i get crazy chills from their talent and range and just how well their voices sound individually and as a choir. I was getting those exact same chills every time Jaron sang. Absolutely amazing singing!! Great video!
LOVE listening to an expert get excited! Never seen a “vocal coach reacts” vid do so much to bring linguistics vocab to the conversation. Phonemes, fricatives, plosives-ASPIRATE SLIDES? Won me over immediately
the thing ive noticed with music in general, but especially gospel, is that it has that power to suck you into the music and make you feel what theyre feeling when they sing. Gospel is so powerful because it's most often sung straight from the heart, not with your vocal chords, and when people bare their hearts like that, you cant help but be drawn in. Music is crazy powerful man, its the language of the gods, i swear.
People sleep on the Go The Distance song but that song is so beautiful vocally! I do a mean Gospel Truth and will just burst out singing it in the Disney section at Target even if it’s not playing 😂😂😂
It's one of my least favourite songs, I have to be honest. Always annoyed me with how whiny it was. But I'm not denying the technical stuff. Just don't like the song

Faith's got nothing to do with it; if the music's fine and fire, anyone of any language or religion can enjoy the heck out of it. Great music transcends those barriers~😊
@@alexisgrunden1556not completely true. Though atheists can just sing any religious song they enjoy, most monotheistic religions have some sort of mutual exclusivity clause. So they cannot worship other gods. Which is exactly what Gospel songs are all about. That is also why BCE and CE became popular in certain academic circles. Because AD is an abbreviation of the Latin for in the year of our lord. Whereas CE is religiously neutral.
Atheist here. The organ is my favorite instrument and the larger-than-life atmosphere inside large churches. Whenever my family drags me to church on easter and christmas I look forward to the organ music.

This was probably the most fun I've had watching a vocal analysis ever. Your voice is stunning & listening to you recreate the lines & talking us through them? Amazing. Hercules was one of my all-time faves as a kid (still is) & it never would have succeeded without the fantastic cast of Muses.
This movie is what introduced me to gospel music. I have loved it ever since. The soundtrack of this film doesn’t get enough attention, The Muses are played by Lillias White (Calliope, the muse of Epic Tales), Vanéese Y. Thomas (Clio, of history), Cheryl Freeman (Melpomene, of tragedy), LaChanze (Terpischore, of dance), and Roz Ryan (Thalia, of comedy). They absolutely nail it! And as a fun fact, each muse performs a song or part accurate to their mythological role! Calliope is the main one singing the story of Hercules, Thalia jokes about Hercules and has comedic bits during each song, Melpomene sings of Herc becoming mortal. It all plays into what made these characters fantastic as the narrators of the film!
I always tell my daughter that Hercules deserves more love than it gets, for no other reason than the Muses. This was a joy to watch, not just because I love The Muses and the music of Hercules, but because it was such a joy to watch Jaron in this. You can tell he loves it too.
Two of the things I find interesting about them using gospel music and it's percise pronunciation is that the reason gospel singing has that is because the words being sung are the gospel. The good news of salvation. You're literally delivering a message. Which fits perfectly with these characters because they are telling the story of Hercules. The style of sing lends itself to being an orator

They were all in unison, as if there were no other ways to look at it, and it was just a simple, straight forward thing of her being in love.
this is very well put and accurate. great connection.
I love this comment
your coment made me cry. In a good way. So well analyzed and compromised. Thank you.
The Gospels are almost a microcosm of gospel singing itself where, as the coach here says, songs have been changed and sung more spontaneously over time.
He hurled his Thunderbolt is one of the most fun lines to sing in any song.
The growl is just perfect
It’s the Alan Menken magic. He’s behind a lot Disney’s biggest songs.
And Howard Ashman
David Zippel was the lyricist
The soundtrack to this movie changed my life! It effortlessly brought the grandeur of cinematic orchestra to the flamboyance of Gospel and then to the smooth, easy listening of R&B . This score was a complete game changer for DISNEY! Shout out to Lillias White for her advocacy of the portrayal of black women in film, she fought for the aesthetic of the muses to match the SOUND.
I did the shoulder move at 1:43 at the same time as you. This movie was also what inspired my 11 year old self at the time to look into Broadway and I never looked back.
You can't watch that part and Not do the shoulder move 😊
Amazing 🤩
I think it’s required choreography for the audience, no?
The music department really carried this movie.
Hercules and Cinderella with Brandy and Whitney Houston CARRIED my childhood do you hear me? This movie stayed in the VCR 😂
I love the songs in the Brandy Cinderella. ❤ Very cool to watch it.
Little brother got me DVD and I’ll tell you how many times watched it 🤦🏾♂️. Never mind streaming it
💯💯💙so nostalgic
My Classical Literature professor once told me Hercules is structured like an ancient Greek play, with the muses taking the role of the chorus. You're right in saying they're the narrators, because the chorus in a greek play was meant to provide narration and voice the audience's thoughts.
Can we also talk about how incredibly talented YOU are!
Him hitting those high notes. Mwah✨
❤
"I Won't Say" has always been one of my fav disney songs, its incredible. and so your voice omg! really enjoyed your singing and analysis of these awesome songs
The way you’re hitting these notes like nothing!! Absolutely incredible 👏🏼
I'm so impressed with your ability to match the original singers perfectly!
A Star is Born is such a super underrated Disney gem of a song.
Never appreciated it when I was younger ( I did with Zero To Hero ), but now I can’t stop hearing it after watching this 😭👏🏾
It’s my absolute favorite
I just appreciate that you're working to show us HOW they're doing it instead of just raving about how great they are. That's what I'm looking for in vocal teacher content thank you!
All the Muses are iconic, but Lilias White really just nails it. Even her voice work and spoken narration. Truly a legend of stage AND screen!
When i started this video i thought id be put off by the interjections BUT my goodness do you know how to keep people engaged, your presence on camera is so warm and inviting, your excitement is contagious and your VOICE!!!!! My goodness
That ending “ a star is born” get me hype all the time. Beautiful airflow control.
The one who corrects Vase I believe is Clio -Muse of History. And the one who leads 'Young Herc was mortal now' is Melpomene - Muse of Tragedy.
Fun side note, the group leader, Calliope, is the mother of legendary musician Orpheus.
Calliope.... the name of Kratos daughter as well.. hmmmmmm😊
Lillias White and her articulation is unsurpassed. Roz Ryan brought the deep gospel growls beautifully
YAAAZ, YAAAAAAZZZ, YAAAZ - ROZ RYAN GAVE ME AMEN ALL THROUGH THE OPENING & EVERY TIME THE MUSES SUNG❗💯❗
I haven't stopped smiling since 0:01 seconds in!!!
The essence of Gospel is all through these ladies singing these scores.
This was such a fun one!!!
I would love to be in target when you did that ❤😂❤
It's one of my least favourite songs, I have to be honest. Always annoyed me with how whiny it was.
But I'm not denying the technical stuff. Just don't like the song
No one sleeps on it! I've seen so many covers here on UA-cam by other artists because it's a favorite of theirs and mine also!!!
Go the distance was my high school graduation song in 98 I had my son in 99 and this is his favorite Disney movie.. The muses were a whole bop Roz Ryan from Amen ❤❤❤
You have NEVER lied! Iconic!!! Every point is SPOT ON! Every growl every note, the enunciation of every word!!!!! I am here for every thing in this video!
in the 90s Disney STAYED with the black girls in the studio
I'm an athiest, but let me tell you something. In audition's and regular choir in high school we did a lot of gospel music-It was a BLAST. ❤
Faith's got nothing to do with it; if the music's fine and fire, anyone of any language or religion can enjoy the heck out of it. Great music transcends those barriers~😊
@@alexisgrunden1556 Absolutely!
SAME!!!!!!!!!! Some songs made me tear up despite me being atheist as well
@@alexisgrunden1556not completely true.
The Muses are a perfect example of when Disney used to be bold and creative enough to blend cultures and create something different and new, as opposed to now where rebooting a classic franchise and including a more diverse cast is their idea of creativity.
Still upset about The Little Mermaid, huh?
@@marleinasmom still care about a comment from a month ago, huh?
@PlanetZing
Oh I'm sorry... is there a time limit on responding to comments? I must have missed the notification that you had commented on a video somewhere. Maybe you should just delete your comments once their relevance runs out, that way you won't have to deal with
this problem anymore.
@@marleinasmom No but there should be a time limit to missing the point
@@planetzing7796
Are you under the impression that I saw your comment when you originally posted it, and have just spent the last month trying to think of a clever retort... as opposed to having just seen both the video AND the comment this evening? Exactly what kind of time limit are you trying to impose? Commenting while the video is still playing isn't fast enough for you? Geez.
I feel like the muses introduced a lot of people who grew up with this movie different ways they could sing. They really made that movie funny enough. It just brought so much to the table.
That little hiccup she does on "everyday" in Gospel Truth III is my favorite moment in the entire soundtrack.
Brilliant. Gorgeous.
🗣️YODEL IN HERE, MA'AM! 🙌🏾
Same
This! Gospel Truth III had me in a chokehold since the first time I heard the movie.
Man, I always loved this music as a kid. And as I got older I realized how genius it was to tell this story using a gospel style. But I didn’t realize how much I was under appreciating their delivery until I watched this video!! I’m so happy this popped up in my suggestions, I could listen to you sing all day.
My favorite part about the 5th muses emphasis on that belt in "Gopsel Truuuth", during Hades' scene....the way she punched that D#5. She didn't sing that note, she snatched it out of the air.
A teacher who isn't shy to show how it's actually done, respect!!
Everything these unbelievably talented women did on this soundtrack? YOU matched. I'm in awe of your talent.
As someone who spent part of my life mute and still has sensory overload issues.. I find it amazing to hear this.. I might not be able to follow you, but I sure appreciate the sound of your voice.. ❤
Hands down best Disney soundtrack EVER!! I LOVE THE MUSES! Love the clarity in their voices - runs and all. No word is minced, no run is wasted, no growl too graveled. Perfect perfect PERFECT! And you’re correct about how in sync they are in unison - I feel like that’s always a huge tell of professionalism and cohesion. Every voice distinct but perfectly aligned. Love your breakdowns - had me outburst singing at work! 🙌🏾
This and Cinderella with brandy that will never release smh
This is like, the third or fourth rewatch for me, and every time the joy you get doing these breakdowns is infectious. Been having a junk week and this yanked me back up out of that. Stay good friend!
24:15 It's almost like a sunrise when they sing in unison. It's so gorgeous, it just fills me up and lifts my spirit ❤😭
Yess ❤❤
My little boy - he is non speaking autistic and uses lots of ecolalia and quotes to communicate - he adores it.
The aricticulation and diction really helped him in speech therapy.
Plus its just great if you have to list to something played over and over for hours.
This really warms my SLP heart. Thank you for sharing ❤
So glad to hear how much your son has improved with the help of the magic of speech therapy and music 🎶
This was probably the most fun I've had watching a vocal analysis ever.
Your voice is stunning & listening to you recreate the lines & talking us through them? Amazing.
Hercules was one of my all-time faves as a kid (still is) & it never would have succeeded without the fantastic cast of Muses.
Herc was such a great flick... still one of my faves to this day. The music was incredible :)
Gives me goosebumps everytime I hear the opening songs ❤
Impressed and jealous by your vocal range my man!
Three of these girls (legends) are friends of mine - consummate professionals and incomparable , each in her own right !!! Thank you for covering this !!!
Can you let them seeeeeeeee this video? I’d give a year of my life to hear them together blastin
I have no idea why but I literally cried watching this video. I never realized how important it was as a young black girl to see this in my cartoons. As an adult it’s so beautiful to understand how important and fantastic the Muses were!!!
You didn't understand it because it WASN'T important. 🙄
Speaking of the Muses having a blast during recording:

I do wish we had more of these footages. 😁
This is my favorite disney movie of all time. I absolutely love that you covered it. These songs still strike a cord with me as if i just heard them for the first time. You would make a Fantastic Muse.
It is mine too! Like down to I still own my original VHS of the movie. It is my comfort movie, I watch it dozens of times a year.
This is the first video of yours I have seen and I just want to tell you that your energy and excitement is absolutely contagious. From your full head of hair lion's mane to your quirky glasses to your amazing set of pipes, I thoroughly enjoyed watching you and listening to your take on the muses.
You're a unique and powerful personality! I'm subscribing.
Holy sh.... Man you replicated their singing so effortlessly that it seems so easy 😂😂😂
Not you complimenting their runs like you aren't executing them with ease! 😂😂
The acoustics in that studio were letting you live your best life
Meg may not be a Disney Princess om paper, but she's got the best Disney Princess Song.
that song is every tsundere's national anthem
God I love the Muses. It was absolutely genius to have them singing gospel instead of classical, which was the intended way they wanted to do it originally. So much more creative.
Your tagline is so special 🥹 “be vocally bold, creative and aware… but always be vocally you.”
Definitely not me crying in my apartment, thank you for this channel
You make these songs even more enjoyable (if that's even possible) with your analysis. I appreciate how you highlight the nuances of singer's voice. Amazing job, music and movie! Cheers!
If you like the vocals here, you're going to love Hunchback of Notre Dame. Absolutely incredible music in that film.
One of my favorite soundtracks ❤️
When someone voice sound so good
it bring tears to yo eyes. Shit speaking to my soul right now lol
Gospel brings spirit to anything it touches.
To be even just within earshot of that recording room must have been a treat! The music for the entire film is fantastic and The Muses rocket it from a classic to legendary!
Lillias White (who voiced the lead Muse) is now Hermes in Hadestown (more Greek mythology) on Broadway. Can you do a video reacting to her in that?
Is she really???🤩👀
That’s so cool!!
Can't explain why, but this random vocal trainer dude, vibing with the muses is one of my favorite things on UA-cam rn
This was really good. Those characters/women were absolutely AMAZING. The voices, the sangin', the presentation.. everything was just amazing.
Never forget the cultural moment this was for Disney to showcase GOSPEL TALENT and STYLE!!!
I never realized how much they were SINGING!!!!!!!!! They let them had full creative control lol. They were allll over in the best way lol
We need more of this Muse goodness in Disney/animation. UGH it's just so GORGEOUS to listen to and ain't nobody watching Hercules without dancing and singing along with the Girls
I would love to see you do a rundown on the songs from Prince of Egypt.
holy shit this "vocal coach reacts, analyze " etc videos are a dime a dozen but you convinced me here. thats an impressive display of skill and understanding. how you pick up at these things and can replicate them instantly blows my mind. thanks for the video.
