  • In this video, I'm sharing with you my highest blood sugar readings during my two pregnancies with gestational diabetes and what I ate to get those readings. I'm so afraid of the judgment, but I also know that many of you with gestational diabetes struggle with the same feelings of guilt and shame that I did, and I wanted to let you know that you're not alone!
Some background information: I was taking 2,000mg of metformin before I got pregnant with my first son, which was prescribed by my reproductive endocrinologist as a form of treatment to help me conceive when I was having trouble getting pregnant. She was the one who discovered that I was insulin resistant and she, along with other healthcare providers in the past, told me I was on the spectrum of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). I continued taking the metformin throughout my entire pregnancy.
For my second pregnancy, I saw the same reproductive endocrinologist, who put me on metformin again. This time, I took 500mg throughout my pregnancy.
I was not put on any other medications or insulin, as I was able to keep my blood sugars within range the majority of the time.
As I mention in the video, I didn't make this video to convey that it's okay to have high blood sugars. It's not, as our baby's health is in our hands. However, it's important to acknowledge how hard it is to have gestational diabetes. Completely changing your diet, and honestly, even having to stop eating foods that are perfectly healthy for us otherwise (ie. whole wheat bread, sweet potatoes) is such a struggle.
Gestational diabetes was as much an internal battle for me as it was physical. Dealing with such anxiety during meal times, being overly obsessive about what I ate, and then beating myself up when my blood sugar wasn't within range, was so mentally draining, and that led to me sometimes not being able to make the "right" food choice. I wasn't perfect (duh), but I was blessed with two healthy boys who are the light of my life.
So I hope that this video helps you feel some sense of solidarity with me and with the other thousands of women who are struggling with gestational diabetes right now as we speak. Doing the best you can is the best that you can do.
