    My oldest son is in his early 20's and he has type 1 diabetes. But thank God for this piece of article ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxVYhghKWmrUgXARZ_ydZTvmmcrw5L0I5i At first he thought he had the flu and was lying down on the bed for three days until his sister took him to the hospital. They took his blood and it was 600. What I do not understand is how he could have gotten it, since no one in the family has it. But he is winning the battle now. This is good stuff.

      It’s a good thing she took him to the hospital. Almost 20 yrs. ago, I worked with a gal who lost her seven year old son to undiagnosed diabetes. She took him to the doctor and they said he just had a virus. She took him home and a couple of days later found him dead in bed. It was so shocking and devastating!!
      I’m so glad your son made it!! ❤

    This 20 minute video was more helpful than any of the drs I have talked to. They are a group that was recommending 175 grams of carbs at 13 weeks pregnant and going up from there. I don't do that it made me feel sick. I feel best if half my plate is vegetables. Reading lily's book has helped a lot, but also knowing that there are other physician/dieticians that don't subscribe to high carb during pregnancy is helpful.

      I was recommended 175-245 gram of carbs per day at 16 wks pregnant. I’m so frustrated because I didn’t eat a lot of carbs prior to pregnancy, so I tried to get as close to that 175 and it made me feel sick. I’m so frustrated now at 18+ wks and stressed, because they prescribed insulin that I’ll start this wk. This is all so scary. I had a pretty healthy diet prior, but I’m 41 and have family history with diabetes so I figured I would have GD but wasn’t expecting insulin. And I just hate eating all the carbs they want me to eat. I also walk 2-4 miles daily. 😩

    Why is it safe for our blood sugar level to be under 140 an hour after a meal but dangerous if it's over 95 when fasted?
    For e.g if my level is 120 after a meal that's good but if it's before a meal it's not. Are high fasting levels (over 95 but under 140) dangerous to the baby?

    The only thing that has mostly worked for me to get my fasting sugar levels to 5.0 mmol or below (think it’s 90 for US/UK) has been at least 30 mins of cardio after dinner. I tried different types of snacks (Greek yogurt, nuts, PB and whole grain bread, cheese) but they never worked consistently. Hope it helps everyone and good luck it’s tough but we can get through it!!!

    Theoretically if you have a high fasting BS which is bad for baby long term couldn’t you just not go too long in between snacks/meals? Example I work overnight shift so my “fasting” doesn’t start until 8am when I get home. Some days I sleep a full 8 hours other days (now that I’m pregnant) I’m up in 3, then I have to force myself to be hungry until I’ve hit the 7-8 hour mark to test my fasting. Wouldn’t it just be easier to eliminate a fasting sugar altogether in a case like mine? Or even if I didn’t work overnight and had a normal sleep schedule, why not get up halfway through the night and have a snack to balance it out.
    Sorry that’s such a long question but it’s been driving me crazy!

    • @PregnancyandPostpartumTV
      @PregnancyandPostpartumTV  4 роки тому +5

      Sarah M
      This is such a good question and I don’t think all health care providers would answer the same. What I do know is that in research they look at fasting numbers and the higher the fasting number the more increased risk for baby and mom. The fasting number is to evaluate how well your body is handling the sugar that your liver is putting out without the confounding factor of food intake. We can only evaluate this when food intake is not an influencing factor (usually overnight). Each blood sugar is just a snapshot to help try to get a view of what is happing overall and to look for trends. There is no research to show if a woman with GD keeps snacking and avoids fasting to keep sugar down that risk is reduced. It’s possible that it decreases the risk, but it’s also possible that it’s not about the individual number, but related to how well the body moves sugar into the cell overall and between the times we are testing.
      For your individual case, it does seem awful to leave you starving after an overnight shift. You could ask your doctor if you can eat on those days? I would think they would be less concerned if overall or on days you do sleep 8 hours you are getting fastings in target.
      Sorry, I don’t have a better answer. Looks like we could use more research in this area.

    Hello, I have a question which concerns me. I took glucose tollerance test and the results were the following: 5.23 fasting sugar, 5.65 glucose level after 1 hour, 5.55 glucose level after 2 hours. My health care provider still suggested to consult with endocrinologist, mainly because of fasting sugars. On the other hand, I read that if I start testing my blood sugars every day, my target fasting sugars should be under 5.3. Therefore, I cannot understand why my health care provider sees any risk in my test results (fasting sugars are under 5.3, but she said it would be better bellow 5.1). Would you have any idea why? Thank you.

    I am on 35 weeks and my OB-GYN predicted GD in my first trimester because I have had PCOS for 12 years, which increases insulin resistance. My blood sugar level spiked too high after meal, it could not be controlled with oral hypoglycemi and finally had to switch to Insulin, even then my endocrinologist had to increase the insulin dose last week. I kept researching for low GI foods, ended up decreasing carbs and replacing it with healthy proteins and fats (lentil soup and cheese worked wonders). Hi! Not a dr or health professional at all but I also have GD and am on bed rest for severe IC. All my doctors and diabetes educators have agreed that the benefits of most types of exercise is not worth the risk with this specific combination of complications. So basically they said not to worry about exercise and focus on diet and medication as applicable (I am on insulin). However you can do some bicep curls or arm lifts from bed, for 5 min 2x/day. Hope this helps anyone reading this.

    • @LicharaDream

      @@laylahamidou I agree regarding the risk and thank you for your suggestion! I actually followed the "Incompetent Cervix: Bed Rest During Pregnancy" program available on this channel. Did it every evening. And only once a week a 30 min walk. I also found something that worked for me with the blood sugar values: a keto dessert 1h after my evening meal (e.g. keto cheesecake or brownie), followed by few spoons of Skyr before bed (so another hour after this keto dessert). It worked like magic and I convinced my doctor to keep me away from Insulin. Once I passed the 38 week mark, my levels started to calm down slowly. Now I'm 3 days away from my due date, trying to get this baby out! :D Baby is doing great and it's in the 55 percentile growth wise, no need for C-section. I wish you and your baby all the best and may you reach as close as possible to your due date!

    Hi Jessica!
    I am 46 and currently expecting my 11th baby. This is my 2nd pregnancy with GD. My 1st was diet controlled but this go round my fasting sugars are a bit higher.
    I have discussed insulin with my MFM doc but I have a specific concern.
    Between pregnancies I developed Mast Cell issues which includes hives.
    I have had hives at least twice during this pregnancy. As I near the end of my pregnancy I know that my mast cell issues will return and I am concerned that insulin may be a trigger. There are several ladies on both of my GD FAcebook groups who have allergy type symptoms from insulin.
    My question is do fasting blood sugars that run 100-105 really require insulin?
    I feel that even though they are elevated and “above target” the risk of chronic hives for 10 weeks is a real one (I am almost 29 weeks and usually deliver between 38-39 weeks)

      Hello, each case is different and the risk of higher sugars is a gradient so the higher the sugars the higher the risk. If you have other risk factors then you will have to evaluate with your doctor which is the greater risk. I have seen others post in which you normally don't fast for the 1-hour test. Would that have increased my sugars? Also, I did not eat well the day before. Would that have affected the score as well? Making sure my score didn't misread due to miscommunication of how I should prepare for the test. I haven’t been diagnosed with GD (yet) but I checked my fasting blood sugar right when I woke up this morning bc this has been some concern for me since I’m obese and have familial history of type 2 diabetes. It was 119. I didn’t do anything but brush my teeth (no water or food and laid in bed) and it went down to 87 after like an hour. I tested 1 hour after eating breakfast it was at 166. When I had dinner a couple hours later i decided to do a brisk walk for 10 mins and at the 1 hour mark I check my glucose I was at 127. I’m wondering if this means I’m borderline or I am GD bc of my fasting blood sugar. I wish I checking my blood sugar earlier bc I genuinely did not know how harmful it can be to baby and I don’t know how long my fasting blood sugar has been this high. Thanks so much for all ur info and anything else to help with fasting blood sugars would be much appreciated! I’m super confused about mine bc I am not sure which one to go off of. I’m currently 27 weeks pregnant. I did a one hour glucose test at 19 weeks and I was at 134 btw. Not sure how my glucose test at 28 weeks will go and I’m super nervous seeing these numbers today.

    Very useful information. Only my question is not related with pregnancy if a person is having fasting blood glucose level as 13 and not on medication, how do we know the liver is producing extra sugar and what food to take to get a healthy liver.

    • @PregnancyandPostpartumTV
      @PregnancyandPostpartumTV  5 років тому +1

      karishma mudaliar karishma mudaliar Thank you for your question. If someone that is not pregnant has a fasting blood sugar of 13, the liver is not producing “extra” sugar. The liver stores sugar that we eat (carbs) and then slowly releases it 24-hours / day to keep our blood sugar levels stable. If blood sugar levels are high then either someone has insulin resistance and has difficulty moving the sugar from the blood into the cells and/or they are not producing enough insulin to “unlock” the cell door to move sugar from blood to cells. So a “healthy liver” diet wouldn’t solve the problem. The liver is just doing it’s job. You would want to focus on a healthy lifestyle to reduce insulin resistance. Www.fitaftergd.com/preventtype2

    This was so helpful! I have been living a real-life nightmare with these doctors and trying to get my diabetes under control. I did have a question you mentioned in the video you don't want to have low sugars but didn't explain why. But also how to combat the low dips and then high rises in the middle of the night. This is what is happening to me and I have lowered my insulin intake and even skipped dosage and it still drops dangerously low (40s).

She keeps telling my to lower my fats and I have and it’s not helping. I’m up to 19 units and it’s just getting frustrating and I am at the point of saying screw it and just eat because I need to eat for us. I feel like I can’t eat anything. Managing my fasting glucose has been very challenging. Limit in Australia is 5.0 mmol. Not having snack after dinner and doing one of your pregnancy HIIT classes before bed was working. But no longer at 35 weeks. Now trialling the 1 serving of low GI carbs before bed. Whilst it has brought it down, I am still 0.1 and 0.2 over. Thanks for reassuring me not to beat myself up about it and making me feel more comfortable with the prospect of insulin should the doctor go that way.

      You are doing amazing, Rachael! You are testing and trying. Yes, be kind to yourself. Some moms can do everything and their body still just doesn’t produce enough insulin to overcome the insulin resistance. Also keep in mind that in a week or so your sugars may level off or even decrease as your placenta’s hormone production decreases a little. But also don’t stress if your sugars just increase until the end.., your diabetes team will help you. Sending you strength to get through this! Be so proud at all the work you have put in!

    Hi ma’am. Thank you so much for sharing! I’m currently 30 weeks pregnant and feel like I’ve tried every trick in the book to get my fasting down 😞 exercising after dinner, cinnamon in my tea, snacking on protein only at night, ice cream and peanut butter at night (bad idea for me). I did gain some good nuggets from your video. I havnt been counting my carbs throughout my meal. My after meal numbers are always low so I probably haven’t been sticking to the 90-120 carb a day. And I will give the apple cider trick a try! Just ordered some apple cider supplements so I’m hopeful it’ll work. If not…medication or insulin may be in my future. My question is, how many failed attempts do I get before being put on meds/insulin? My fasting numbers have been going up and down for 2 weeks so far…sometimes in the low 90’s sometimes in the highs. My target is 95.

      prajeesh ravindran Many women take Metformin first trimester, especially those with PCOS first trimester. It does cross the placenta barrier so some moms opt to take insulin instead.

      Hello Sajida, I'm so sorry you are so stressed. Yes, your blood sugars are out of the target range. You should bring them to a doctor or your diabetes team so they can make recommendations. They will make medication or insulin recommendations for you. I'm not sure what is in your chicken motton recipe, but from other recipes that I'm finding online it should be OK. I know this is an old video but I hope you reply. My ob says he’s not going to diagnose me with GD when my 3hr glucose was fasting @ 77, 1hr @ 214, 2hr @ 208, and 3hr at 88. Those numbers alone, I believe would say I have gd. What do you think??

      Wow my glucose numbers were significantly lower and I was diagnosed with GD.

      Your ob is good. I was diagnosed with GD with lower numbers than yours all because my fasting was 99, the same as their standard but 1hr and 2hrs was normal so my doctor doesn’t understand why the fasting is high besides I have a normal A1C too. Your fasting is great plus your numbers reduced as time passes so it means your body is using the glucose well. Nobody will consume that amount of sugar they give to us at the hospital at once and I think some healthcare professionals forget that.

    My blood sugar was always high in the morning. So I had to take insulin before bed 12 units. That was the only thing that helped.
    When I fixed my diet it stopped the acid reflux as well. I did not exercise but I was as active as I could be to keep the circulation in my body good.

      Hi Kavitha, Have you already reduced your carbs as much as you and your doctor feel safe? Are you doing the most amount of activity that you can safely manage? ua-cam.com/video/zvz9WMxVnJw/v-deo.html

    I have heard of the apple cider vinegar helping control blood sugar level. If I want it to help my fasting number, should I drink this before or after my evening snack?

    • @PregnancyandPostpartumTV
      @PregnancyandPostpartumTV  4 роки тому

      After evening snack or also with meals. The acidity will lower the glycemic index and blunt the blood sugar spike.

      Yes, you can just add however many carbs your diabetes provider recommended to it :) or have it as a snack if you didn’t require carbs at that time.
