Fix & Replace: Broken Faulty Toilet Syphon: Will not flush: How to DIY

  • FOR DIY entusiasts and those who like to save money.
    I AM NOT A PLUMBER.
Faulty syphon was a "Twyfords" design.
Replacement system is from "Fluidmaster" and is a "Cable Dual Flush Valve for toilet cistern with Lever activation and a 400UK inlet valve".
    I AM NOT A PLUMBER.
I am simply trying to put out information to show how easy this process is. When looking for information on this process myself, I could only find vids on "close coupled systems" and I wanted to show how easy it is to repair this type of toilet set-up and maybe save you money if you end up in the situation of your toilet not working properly.

Thank you for posting, the first how to fix flush problem videos on here were American, so it was a completely different toilet system they have. So I googled British toilet flush fix and your video came up. Mine is the same set up as your old system and the flush has completely gone, cannot afford a plumber so this is a huge help. I can't thank you enough!

I'm off to screwfix in the morning to get the parts for having a go at this. It all looks fairly straight forward. What worries me is the 68 thumbs downs (unforeseen circumstances perhaps?). I will let you know tomorrow afternoon how I get on! Thanks for posting this video in advance.

I just had a look at the toilet. The inlet pipe looks the same, so the ballcock will be easy enough to replace. The outlet pipe is different though. It has one massive pipe going through the bowl that I cannot see. Is there any help you or anyone else might be able to provide? Thanks.

(contd.) Pulled syphon out again. I hadn't taken quite enough off flushpipe; it should be very slightly higher than cistern base (?). The screwed flushpipe connector & its (perished) tapered washer needed replacing; 2 quid from Plum Center. While messing about, I fortunately found remains of the diaphagm firmly wedged at the inlet to WC pan so fished it out. Bunged it all back together again. PERFECTION: at least 50 quid, better flush, much quieter, saves water, happy wife. THANK YOU SO MUCH !

Thank you for this. We are pensioners and had just been quoted £180 to replace our siphon (because our 1960's system is archaic, apparently). With this very clear instruction, and our ratchet spanner we are confident we can do this ourselves.

Squidgybidge, I am awful at DIY but managed to fix my toilet due to your fantastic video! Thanks so much. I changed and upgraded the syphon on a close coupled toilet. I had to keep running back to the living room to check the next step but managed to do it with only 1 leak which I sorted with PTFE tape. Keep up the good work my friend! And thank you very very much! mark.

thank you sir, you are the unsung hero of men. Today, I become a man. I learnt to fix the syphon bit. The metal rod broke and the pin connected to that went inside the syphon tank. I couldn't pull it out manually. Only way was to open it up and push the pin back up. Made a new metal rod and put it all back together. FELT GREAT. THANK YOU AGAIN SIR, YOU ARE FUCKING LEGENDARY!!!!

Great Video! Liked. I work as a maintenance guy (not a qualified plumber, but I've worked with a few). Most amateurs get in trouble on 2 fronts. A. Don't have right tools: For this job you need an adjustable wrench (to open big nuts) and a flat head screwdriver (minimum) - I have mole grips (locking pliers), thin-nose pliers and wd40 in my toolkit, too to release stubborn nuts. B. Don't understand what washers do. The big black washers (that SB shows u in this vid) are crucial to stop leaks. If you're a beginner, I recommend photographing their position in situ, so you KNOW where there need to be, BEFORE you re-tighten. Checking for leaks AFTER assembly is what a real pro will do... Good luck and don't be scared. SB is saving homeowners at least £80 (in UK prices) by replacing the syphon, handle and inlet valve here. Well done! PS: Inside syphon is a kind of diaphram (plastic plate) that wears out over time... This is OFTEN why a toilet becomes difficult to flush. PPS: An adjustable wrench is also known as "a plumbers wrench" (standard equipment for ALL plumbers)!

I done mine after having a rubbish flush for over a year and it's such a great feeling doing it yourself.
My tips are to keep some old bath towels at hand as I had 2 BIG leaks before noticing. I had forgot a rubber seal and place all your old rubbish bits in empty bath or shower tray out the way to give you space. Good luck to everyone who has a go!!.

Man, i hate plumbing...when I tackled this job a few years back, I got the bright idea as I was reconnecting everthing to peak over the top and crack on the water slowly to see if the water would flow before the final connections...don't know about there, but here the water is under prettty good pressure and there is no "slow flow"...it shot up and nailed me between the eyes... the only good thing was my wife laughed uncontrolably for about 10 min....humor escaped me at the thime :D...Jim

To be fair, a good plumber will make sure you have the correct parts (and will source them for you), and will have all the correct tools needed to do this job. Unfortunately, their are rogues out there (that overcharge), then don't fit correctly and test parts after completing the job. How to avoid the rogues? Only use a plumber recommended by word-of-mouth (recent testimonials) and who will give you a written estimate ON PAPER. If the plumber wont put anything on paper (provide a written record BEFORE the job starts) go elsewhere my friends...

Thanks for this which I used on a toilet where the cistern sits on the bowl without a pipe in between. This involved removing the whole cistern to be able to remove the syphon assembly. I like that this fluidmaster means that I can just twist and unclick to replace diaphragms in the future and won't have to take the toilet apart.
Now all I need is to get a good seal on the inlet join...
BTW at around 07:15, you say the height adjustment is very stiff. Not if you slide that grey ring that's under your thumb towards the float it's not. But remember to slide it back into position when you have the float at the right heigh,t otherwise water pressure can force it higher than you want it to be.

Excellent---I'm watching in case I have to change the whole dam thing. The handle on mine isn't returning to the top position, so it's not shifting enough water to flush on the down stroke. There's a busted spring lying in the bottom, but the maker's say it shouldn't be there.? I reckon it was assisting the handle to return to the top position. Can't get one anyway. Better watch your vid again.

I've a washdown WC with flushpipe as shown. It's been leaking very slightly for years where the flushpipe meets base of cistern. It also 'sings' intermittently at the end of fill stage. Last week the syphon diaphragm packed in completely; unhappy wife. I saw your vid & bought components as directed and followed instructions. Problem: flushpipe projected too far into cistern & fouled on flush Valve internally. I sawed 35mm off. Everything went smoothly until I noticed a leak later... (contd.)

    • @SquidgyBidgey
      @SquidgyBidgey  10 років тому

Personally I wouldn't. Too much of a chance of something going wrong and you ending up with a flood. Its just turning one valve normally to stop the water coming into the house. You just need to locate the mains water inlet and the associated valve.

Hey there, I'm just about to order this and attempt the process. I was wondering 'Squidgy Bidge' is it still working fine? I've heard mixed reviews on the quality of the product, I think it's on Amazon.co.uk for £30 which doesn't seem to bad. But I wanna know if yours is still working grand or have you experienced any problem with faulty handle (going loose after a few months) or any other problems since installation??

dude you should be affiliate and put links to items you use in the desc :)

Links used to be there, but Screwfix changed the links address on their site, so I couldn't be bothered keeping them updated. The description of the items is there for anybody to do a search on them and maybe even find a better a deal.
Not interested in affiliating, its not why I have the channel in the first place, but thank you for looking out for me.

I think I've finally sorted it.
Started by adding an isolation valve so I could take my time. I decided to replace the inlet valve too, as suggested in video, but then thought might as well add a new flush pipe too. I had a tiny drip from where the flush pipe went in so tightened it a bit more, which stopped the drip but and cracked the nut. So I had to do the syphon bit all over again. (as well as repeat isolation valve because that was leaking.
With the money saved on a plumber I have treated myself to a dehumidifier. And I always intended to box in the corner of the hall ceiling where the damp patch (from drippy isolation valve) now is anyway :D
      Thanks again.

enoch powellsghost Popping in a new cable system makes sense: dual flush, easier to use, and all brand new. For ~ £10 on Amazon
