What could it be that when the float goes all the way up even after adjusting the height through the screw knob thing and the water rises above the float and goes into the overflow?

Went over my 85 year old father's house and he told me he had called a plumber because his toilet would not stop running. The plumber was going to charge a $150 just to come and check the problem. I quickly went on UA-cam and found this video and fixed the problem for $3.50.
Without this video I would have gone and bought him a new fill valve for about $30. So not only did this video save him hundreds of dollars from a plumber but it also saved him $26.50 when I stepped in and became his plumber.
So thanks for the video I'm sure my father will be using UA-cam from now on to troubleshoot problems.

I was watching videos about changing the fill valve due to slow fill, water leaking from top of fill valve but then saw yours and got the cap off. Completely worn down seal! Fluidmaster not a perfect replacement for my Delta but good enough for right now! Thanks a million! I try to be handy but miss my husband doing things like this around the house and get so frustrated that he was taken too soon. Sometimes I feel so stupid an not confident to do the things I used to never have to worry about. Many Thanks to goods guys like you.

Growing up, if my family had house issues we had a family friend who was VERY handy, and we called on his help often. Now he is passed away, and small things here and there have started to pop up at my mom's house that she's asking ME to help with! I'm not a plumber or a handyman, I'm a 20-something with a dead end job and a music hobby.
When my mom called me today to ask if I could replace "the thingy in the tank that goes up and down with the water," I let her know I'd be starting from scratch and using the internet to learn on the fly. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for making this sort of information so readily accessible.

I have a brand new toilet I installed lately, and the fill valve inside the tank wouldn't stop filling the tank. Looking at your video I used your advice and removed the top valve and flushed the screen looking thing inside the tube. It had rusty sediment from the supply pipe. I reassembled the valve and I now have a toilet that acts as it should. You sir have made me a very happy guy because your advice worked! Thank you so very very much for posting the video. OMG! Papa Joe!!! I am a 70-yr old woman who thought I was going to go STARK RAVING MAD listening to the toilet run for the past 2 weeks. The maintenance guy in my bldg came & told me it was the big plug at the bottom of the toilet & I needed to buy a new one. WRONG. I could see there was nothing wrong w that plug. So I carefully followed your instructions . You instructed us to click off the top of the gray plastic bit & then unscrew the black part of the tank thingy to the left . So I got it open & saw the other white plastic part was clogged w weird gunk. I removed those nasty chunks w a needle nosed pliers & rinsed out the white plastic thingy with a glass [as you demonstrated] in case there were additional mineral deposits. WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!!!!! Bless you kind sir for your clear & concise demonstration. I still cannot believe I repaired the dang toilet when the maintenance man had NO IDEA WHAT HE WAS TALKING ABOUT lol Blessings to you!

I just can't thank you enough for this video. Removing the fill valve top showed me that the rubber seal looked okay but just in case, I purchased a new seal and a new fill unit. My local hardware store says they don't sell the valve cap piece separately (but I've seen them on amazon.) I noticed that even with the new seal, the outside lever that moves the pin up and down just didn't move easily. So, I took a dowel and moved it up and down in the opening in the old seal and removed some debris that had accumulated in there, and now the lever/pin combo moved like the new fill unit I just purchased. Replaced the cap and turned on the water. COMPLETE SUCCESS! The tank filled and turned off promptly. I was beside myself with joy. I had been dealing with this for at least six months, and all it was was a little debris in the rubber seal!! The seal itself is in perfect shape (the water in San Francisco is quite soft.) It's interesting that FluidMaster says to replace the entire unit every five years.
    Thanks again!

Thx for the video. Noticed my toilet running yesterday and couldn't get it to stop. Was thinking I needed to replace the entire floater assembly. Ended up replacing the float valve as you had shown and it works great now. I was worried that it wouldn't work because I used a Fluidmaster valve seal but the float was a Kohler brand that looked almost exactly the same.

Thanks .,,,,,, I saw there were mineral deposits in the rubber gasket of the flow valve as well as the flapper valve after I replaced them both. I did keep the flow valve because ever since I was a kid I like to take things apart and see how they work inside. The flow valve has been sitting on the washroom floor a while and if I didn't see your video I would have used a screwdriver to pop off that black cap. As soon as you said quarter turn left. I went and picked it up did a quarter-turn left and the cap came off perfectly. It was filed with minerals. Thanks for saving me some money for the next time around.

My landlord had to replace the water line to my house. The crew used PVC pipe. Immediately after turning on the water my toilet started running. I popped the Fluidmaster 400 cap off and removed the valve only to see that the valve was totally clogged with PVC saw shavings. After a good flushing I didn't even need a new rubber valve. Your video was an eye opener and I thank you.

Mine was so bad I couldn't even flush it out by turning the water on. I had to use a Bobby pin that I cut the tip off of to pick ROCKS out from around the spout. Didn't even have to take the seal out. It was just barely dribbling and wouldn't fill up before, now it fills up in like 5 or 10 seconds. Thanks a ton man, every other video basically just says, hey change the fill valve because it's so easy.

@papajoeknows8355 There were hardly any videos on how to fix or repair an existing fill valve, thr majority of videos were simply showing how to replace the entire fill valve because it is so simply and easy. I wanted to try and repair mine, not replace it right now. So this video you put out is a real gem, and stands out from the others. I would try to keep stuff like this in mind when putting out any future videos if you still do that, just a thought. Anyways, thanks again, and I wish you the best of luck sir.

@@papajoeknows8355 Although I still have a problem I just noticed. The toilet still runs too long after flushing, and I resolve it by pushing down on the top of the valve housing. Apparently, the seal is not seated properly. Any ideas on how to properly seat the seal in the plastic thing? As soon as I push down and put pressure on the top of the housing the water stops running.
